3.5 rounded up to 4 because of the pleasant distraction!
Sophie Harkness is a wedding planner at Castle Marrion, Briar Glen in the Scottish Highlands. Following yet another unreasonable Bridezilla demand, Sophie stands her ground and walks away from the job on a point of principle. Her beloved grandmother Helena has recently died and this offers Sophie a solution in the form of an unexpected bequest of some beautiful and valuable china and a secret purchase of a shop. Sophie embraces the change of career and prepares to open the shop. An unusual tea set with an enclosed mysterious letter dated 1900 leads to an intriguing investigation in order to understand the story behind it. Enter, stage left, Xander North, a good looking but somewhat austere art critic who assists in the discoveries.
This is an enjoyable, easy, beach type read and a welcome change from my usual reading material! The characters are good and mostly likeable. I really like Sophie's passion for china which she inherits from her grandmother and their relationship seems to have been really heartwarming. I enjoy the mystery at the heart of the story and the twists and turns in the 1900 investigation. It's well written, the pace is quite quick and there's rarely a dull moment! I daresay it follows a predictable path in one sense but the romance element has a lower key influence than other books in this genre as it's mostly about the mystery and there's a puzzle over the reasons for her Sophie's grandmother's bequest. Therefore, the romance hook up at the end maybe comes a bit swiftly but that's understandable!
Overall, a diverting read from the harsh realities of life right now, in a lovely setting.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Harper Collins UK: One More Chapter for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Sophie's unwillingness to give up her terrible job to pursue her dream job would've been more believable if she wasn't totally financially stable, didn't have a supportive family, and had no store already purchased for her. She gets to take her time, doesn't have to worry about money, and is never in a rush to set up her dream store. There's no sense of urgency or concern in this arena, so her hesitation was a hurdle to understand.
The chapters are short, and each one ends with a cliffhanger or some form of 'what will happen next?' so most of the book feels like a preview followed by a recap before getting to the point. The artificial highs made the story feel less important, not more - like watching a cheesy reality tv show.
The entire story is predictable and, besides the Pride and Prejudice romantic drama, everyone gets along incredibly well. If every small town were this idyllic, no one would ever leave. Having said that, I read A Scottish Highland Surprise in one sitting and found it incredibly easy to read. So if you're looking for a beach read or palate cleanser, you've come to the right place.

I loved this story from start to finish and thought it was such an involved narrative. I enjoyed reading about Sophie’s new venture whilst learning about her grandmother and the story of a mysterious tea set.
For sure, the foundations of this plot are similar to many stories: a woman leaves her job to start afresh – usually a result of some inheritance or deep wish. However, this book felt different from the beginning and I think this was because I felt so connected to Sophie’s character. Watching her as a frazzled wedding planner never felt right; it was a career for Sophie that wasn’t the right fit for her. The showdown with a wealthy and influential client produced the catalyst of change for Sophie and I loved how she moved to fulfil her nan’s wishes – even if she didn’t feel completely confident herself.
Opening a ceramic shop in the Scottish Highlands sounded wonderful and I loved Shackman’s description of the interior of Sophie’s shop. It did not pervade that sense of wealth and exclusivity: Sophie is catering for all budgets and tastes, even if she does stock some more expensive pieces. This strengthens the link to her grandmother as it is her older collections that allow Sophie to open her shop.
Whilst readers follow Sophie’s venture, I enjoyed how Shackman switches the timeline back to Sophie’s nan. Instead of Sophie’s nan being an absent relative who is sorely missed, she comes to life in this narrative. Learning about her passion for ceramics and becoming a working woman, Shackman shows how Sophie’s nan had more to her than just a large collection of teapots and tea sets. I was fascinated to see how she alters as a result of having a job, but also felt fearful of the stable life she has with her family being threatened.
The other element of the story – the mystery of the older tea set – added a further dimension to this story. It meant the story was almost dual-timeline, but not heavily so. Furthermore, the way that Shackman narrates the older timeline meant it still felt fresh and relatively modern. Learning about the tea set through newspaper clippings and local historians was a great way to add to this plot and link Sophie to the past.
Not only does this novel feature lovely ceramics and a mystery too, there is also romance. I thought this part of the plot to be the most predictable but I still relished in the developing relationships that emerge in the story. As a reader, it was clear when Sophie was making mistakes but I think this reflected her growth as a person – spurred on by her growing business.
This was a great read and I enjoyed it so much more than my previous Shackman book. Although both are set in the Highlands, they are completely different stories and this one was far more interesting. A layered narrative with love and mystery, it definitely had me reaching for a cup of tea.
With thanks One More Chapter, Harper Collins and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This author is amazing she knows how to get you hooked straight away and has you guessing what will happen. The characters are great and the plot to the story is brilliant. Shows how you can change your life with your job and make new friends and try and find things from the past and solve a mystery letter. Sad in places as well. Full of secrets and surprises. Sophie is a wedding planning and when a spoilt bridezilla wants to move her date and it falls on the date of her friend she works for she refuses and ends up handing her notice in as she won’t move the date and her grandma has just passed way and when she learns her grandma has brought a shop for her to follow her dreams in having her porcelain shop and she can’t wait to start this. She is left with an unusual tea set with a mysterious letter and she can’t help but read the letter and follow the mystery and intrigued by the story behind the tea set. But then Xander comes knocking on the door she soon learns the colourful past to the antique what will she do with it all and will she be happy in her new job. A warm beautiful read.
A Scottish Highland Surprise by Julie Shackman is a great contemporary fiction that I truly enjoyed.
This is such a wonderful, uplifting, and enjoyable story. It has it all: fiction, romance, mystery, and it all is all intertwined to give the reader more than just a simple contemporary fiction.
I enjoyed the cast of characters, the progression and growth of the main character Sophie, and the wonderful historical flashbacks involving her Grandmother. The author does a great job in crafting a novel that entertains and also brought a smile to my face.
A definite gem.
5/5 stars
Thank you NG and One More Chapter/ Harper Collins UK for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 4/22/22.
I thought the plot was interesting and well thought out. Although stating that, the book was just okay to me. I never really felt much emotion for the characters. The main character Sophie was a confident, strong willed, capable, talented, person that could easily tell good-hearted people from spoiled brats in the first part of the book.
After Sophie left her job at Castle Marrian as a wedding planner (which is not a spoiler, due to the entire story being about her setting up a crockery shop), her personality changed and she became a person that was easily swayed, second guessing herself all the time. I missed the person I first met as Sophie.
This was a book that I continued reading to find out what was going to happen, without much invested as to what was going to occur. It was not a page turner for me.
This was the first book I read by this author, Julie Shackman. I definitely would read another book by her and maybe it would be more to my taste.
I want to thank HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for allowing me to read the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
Sophie is down on her luck and in a job she doesn’t like when she finds her recently deceased grandmother has left her a shop and the means to run it. Sophie quits her job and sets off to open up the shop in a quaint little town.
While this could have been a cute story, everything was way too convenient for my taste. There was no build up or real conflict. It ended up being predictable and I still didn’t really care what happened.
Also, I found the descriptions to be repetitive and I felt they were used over and over to extend the length of the book. How many times did we need to be told that the shop was painted lilac and white?
Thank you NetGalley for an eARC copy in exchange for an honest review. 2.5 stars.
A cozy Scottish romance with a few separate stories going on within the storyline. Each story is linked together in some way which makes for a very engaging and heartwarming read. So much information about tea sets! Who knew there was such interesting aspects to it? There is mystery, romance and many secrets to be found while reading A Scottish Highland Surprise. This was a nice story to escape to. Perfect summer reading! Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
A Scottish Highland Surprise was an easy read with plenty of beautiful moments to appreciate in the story. Sophie’s career change from wedding planner to porcelain shop was one of my favorite parts of the story, and I loved watching her coming into her own as she comes to terms with her grandmother’s death and opens the tea shop. Some of the romance moved a little quick for me, but the book overall was fast paced. There is a little mystery wrapped into the story, as a beautiful porcelain set is dropped off suddenly to Sophie as she’s setting up shop, which was a fun addition to the plot.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced digital copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Really enjoyable read. Heart warming and such lovely characters (there is an exception). Warm and immersive writing. The crockery descriptions are so enchanting. There a touch of mystery and intrigue that just endears this book to me more. Perfect comfort read.
This captivating story blew me away! What a delightful history-laced mystery with a dash of charming romance in an adorable Scottish setting! After I finished reading Julie’s novel, my heart was brimming with joy and excitement. I have enjoyed all Julie’s novels but her first A Room at the Manor was my favourite. Well, it was, until reading her newest. Now I have to say A Scottish Highland Surprise has nudged past that one as I believe it is her best writing and story yet. It is perfect from start to finish. I absolutely and whole heartedly mean this: I sincerely loved it! I was pinned to the pages with the mystery, the characters, the whole lot.
Sophie is a wonderfully likeable character. She’s not perfect but she has strong morals and is loyal, hardworking, dedicated and passionate as a person and wedding planner. When her life goes into another direction, thanks to her grandmother, Helena, this causes her character development to advance quickly. The intriguing plot sends her and others across some troubled waters but eventually delivers them to a safe harbour. The depth and maturity in Julie’s writing shines through all the original aspects of A Scottish Highland Surprise. I don’t want to give anything away but this is a tight, well-crafted story that covers everything masterfully.
A Scottish Highland Surprise is mostly told by Sophie in first person but there are other devices used to provide insight into Helena’s story. There is something magical about finding letters left by our loved ones. Especially when they are meant for us to read after they are gone. Julie handles this very well and gives her character Sophie this blessed option. It not only provides us, the reader, a special window on the soul of the grandmother but Sophie, too, learns much about her, that even she was not aware of, despite their special connection. The letters are beautifully heart-felt and Helena’s voice comes across authentic and natural, making us feel even closer to her. At least in as much as we can through ideas we have formulated about her as hinted by her granddaughter in conversations and thoughts presented to the reader. Along with the letters, there is apt use of flashbacks of Grandma Helena’s past life. These provide the reader with even more wonderful insight of the character and the reason behind her wishes for her granddaughter. In various chapters, we also are whisked away to the past in third person as the narrator gives us flashbacks in the storyline of Grandma Helena. It allows us to see what has shaped her life, the decisions she made and how these experiences influence the advice she gives her granddaughter.
The whole cast of characters are delightful and fill this setting with unforgettable charm. Then there are the two love interests that Sophie must deal with that leave us and her wondering who is the real prince charming: Xander the Art critic or Jake the artist?
Julie created an amazing trail of breadcrumbs and threw in lots of ingenious twists. The mystery is intriguing and complex and expands into so many areas and lives. Quite a delicious treat reading this story!
I will be singing Julie’s praises forever on A Scottish Highland Surprise for she deserves it. She has done a brilliant job. I had the most wonderful uplifting experience reading it over the weekend. I have given it a 5 Star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for in my opinion this story deserves it. The author should be very proud of all her hard work. I highly recommend A Scottish Highland Surprise.
Thanks to Julie, One More Chapter and Netgalley for a review copy.
A Scottish Highland Surprise is a charming and light-hearted read.
This delightful book was just what the doctor ordered to chase away those dreary springtime blues (FYI, where I live, it’s snowing). I am sure it is no surprise to those who follow our blog that I am a huge fan of English and Scottish cozy romance books. They are my go-to reads when I need a pick me up. A Scottish Highland Surprise is all I could ever wish for in a cozy romance book. I will definitely be reading more of Julie’s books in the future.
The story and flow follow that typical cozy romance story pattern. You know, the main heroine makes a big decision to change her life, starts her own business, meets some wonderful people along the way, and slowly falls in love with the dashing hero. But even though the story structure is predictable, Julie adds some pretty fantastic, unique and charming elements to the story to make this book fun, engaging, and just so darn delightful.
One of the main things that I loved about this book was its focus on crockery (teapot sets). I never knew I would be so interested in learning more about teapot history, and it would never occur to me that someone would want to open up a crockery shop. Sophie and her grandma’s passion for crockery just leaped from the pages. Julie did such an excellent job at bringing Sophie’s shop to life. I felt like I was there on opening day, admiring all the different tea sets and not being able to decide which one I wanted to buy.
A Scottish Highland Surprise was another amazing and incredibly entertaining book from Julie Shackman's pen. It was the second book I've read by her and I enjoyed it just as the first one. Her book has something special, kind of mysterious, thrilling and develops a really great love story. This time it was love for crockery the main heroine inherited from her grandmother, who somehow knew what's best for her darling granddaughter. What Sophie hadn't expected was the ownership of special crockeries and a deed for a shop that her grandma had left her. After she found an old leather case with beautiful antique crockery on her shop's door. While she was looking for the sign of a manufacturer, she found an apology letter in the pouch of the leather case and got intrigued about the history of this amazing set. When Xander North, a grumpy art critic promises to help her find out more about this antique set, she wouldn't have imagined falling in love with a type of man like him...not in a million years. Yet the heart doesn't always follow the mind. When Sophie learns disturbing information about Xander's past and should probably stay miles away, she still can't help but feel pulled to him. Could they overcome prejudice and find out together what happened with the beautiful crockery?
A Scottish Highland surprise is the PERFECT summer read! I read it in just two days and found it easy to read and really get engrossed in the world of Sophie Harkness. Sophie’s character is so easy to fall in love with, the way she stands up to her employers right at the start of the book demonstrates her strength (even if she’s not sure of herself afterwards).
I did find the concept of opening a crockery shop a bit random to begin with but actually the way the author builds the back story around this makes you not only believe its absolutely a viable thing but that it’s going to be a massive success. But lets be real here, that’s totally not why we read a romance! Enter Xander North, the aloof art critic and off we go on the romantic arc of this story.
However, and don’t get me wrong I love a good romance, I LOVED the extra element to this story of the mystery that surrounds a tea set left with Sophie as she prepares to open the shop. It adds an extra level of intrigue that is sometimes missing in this genre.
I absolutely recommend adding this to your reading this for this summer!
The Pursuit of Bookiness received a Netgalley of this book in return for an honest review. All opinions are our own
Scotland. One word that would encourage me to read it. Just one and I'm already in. And when you add magnificent crockery, untold stories from the past, then we have a perfect book for any book lover. Ladies and Gentleman, A Scottish Highland Surprise.
I feel the tea on these pages, I feel the passion and love for art, I see people who are chasing their dreams and living their lives. This book is so fulfilled with emotions, small actions that can make a significant difference, and kindness to each other that I was so calm and full of joy to spend some time reading and enjoying it.
I found it perfect for spring. Why sping? Cause it was such a pleasure to have a copy and to read for the first time this year on my balcony and just being in this world, in these stories and have a chance to be a part of extraordinary, and simple at the same time, Scottish days.
As a wedding planner in a highlands hotel, Sophie loves her role except for her boss and the often overzealous brides. Resigning on a point of principle means she can take up the opportunity afforded by her late grandmother, but can she make the business succeed? A multilayered story tells the story of her grandmother's early life, a mystery surrounding an antique tea set and a gentle but conflicted romance for Sophie.
I like the story's originality and how the plot incorporates three women's stories, all intricately woven into an engaging plot. Sophie is s likeable character with easy to understand motivations. Xander is the perfect love interest, arrogant but hiding a broken and kind heart.
This story provides the reader with an enjoyable medley of mystery, poignancy and romance.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
Wow! Julie Shackman did a heck of a job making sure all three storylines from the 1900’s, 70’s and present were all interconnected. That’s how you do it right there! I was easily transfixed on Xander and invested on Sophie’s new, unexpected career path throughout the book.
Justice was served to all the villains in the story and I just love how she wrapped it all up in a nice blue briar rose bow. I definitely recommend this book for those that love historical fiction. Now I want to go visit the Scottish Highlands!
A huge thank you to the genius that is Julie Shackman, NetGalley, and the publishers, One More Chapter and Harper Collins.
I enjoyed the first half of this book and then was rolling my eyes for the second half. The insta love between two people who had only a couple of conversations was beyond farfetched. You knew exactly who the bad guy was, the guy you were supposed to be rooting for came off as so remote (and he had no backstory to help with that) that you didn't care about him at all, The MC was strong and able to stand her ground in the beginning and then she turned into a wishy-washy person after quitting. I didn't like the personality shift.
Didn't like Grandma's story. Didn't like her, her husband or her love interest. The mystery is the only thing that kept me moving along in the book or else I would have DNF'd it.
After her Gran passes away and lays the foundations for Sophie’s dream job she leaves her wedding planning job at a Scottish Castle to pursue her new career. A mysterious lady drops a package which changes her life even further and introduces the frosty Xander North to her.
This book has such a lovely feel to it. I love all the wonderful tea sets and their wide histories. The mystery within the story added another layer of depth and excitement. I loved the layers and characters within the story. It really is a great read and a very satisfying ending too.
This book absolutely must be read with a cup of tea and a biscuit.
A very enjoyable read, with a little bit of mystery, a bit of romance and a smidgen of historical fiction, so there's something for anybody. The characters are likeable and the pace is quick, with a lot of things happening both in the present narration and in the one set in the past. The romance part is not very prominent in the story, but I loved it that way, since there's a lot more going on in this book, with its mysteries and twists and turns.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sophie and Xander… This book was such a good, lighthearted read. A sweet, cozy romance with mystery thrown in. Sophie was so refreshing as a heroine, she was strong and driven but was also so sweet. I loved Xander “Frozen” North. He was so jaded but came through in such a big way at the end. The mystery portion was done very well and had you truly invested in the outcome. All in all, a wonderful story.
ARC provided by NetGalley HarperCollins UK in exchange for honest review.
I enjoyed Shackman's last book but this was a little too formulaic and cutesy for me. The characters are in good, but it reads a little too much like a chick-lit bingo card. There's nothing particularly unique about it and the last chapter or two feels a bit rushed, like extra detail just had to be squeezed in.
It's a harmless read, not un-enjoyable, but not one you feel compelled to read on.
I had to read this while I was in Scotland. It was the perfect setting to read this. However, I am not a huge crockery person so when that was being talked about I got a bit bored. It’s a cute romance but I just have read other books I have liked more. I’m glad I read this is was the right atmosphere for it.
A lovely story set in the Scottish Highlands beautifully descripted. making you feel you are there, perfect quick beach read with a hint of mystery. Thank you netgalley for the advance copy
A pleasant read that’s easy to pick up and put down, so perfect for holidays. It meanders along following the adventures of Sophie, her family, her new business and the mystery of the tea set.
Readers looking for warm-hearted romantic escapism are going to be completely enchanted by Julie Shackman’s A Scottish Highland Surprise.

Heartwarming, witty and wonderfully feel-good, Julie Shackman’s A Scottish Highland Surprise is a spellbinding contemporary romance readers will find impossible to resist.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Zvládne to?
Good, but too much uninteresting filler that was used in the first book she wrote.
The story is brilliant. It was informative about Scotland, tea sets, and family trees. This is the second book of Ms. Shankman's I have recently read. I couldn't give it more stars because of the formula writing. There are many words for yellow, cream, etc. It was so off-putting to read "lemon" over and over in both books. Same with "cream" and other dismal repeats of colors and verbs. Why ruin a very good story with this type of redundancy? Is this the work of a lazy editor or a lazy author? Why use this formula to crank out books? It's a good , intricate story. Now it's ruined by having to slog through "copper" leaves? We don't need to know every little bit about the colors in a scean anyway. We also don't need to know what the weather was like in virtually every scene. Or what kind of surface are the characters are dusting or walking on. Is there a word for that? Padding, maybe? Sadly, I don't think I can suffer through any more lemon dappled sunlight while wearing a lemon and cream jumper with my dark blue jeans and navy leather ankle boots, with my straw shoulder bag. An occasional reference to establish a character personality would be sufficient. There's no need to beat a dead horse through the entire book. It's rather like the personality of the character JAKE. His deception, that was seen-through from the very beginning. Save our sanity!
V tom období som čítala niekoľko príbehov s podobnou atmosférou, preto som ju radšej odložila a teraz som sa do knihy opäť pustila. Môj záujem o tento príbeh narastal každou stránkou viac a viac a to vďaka tajomstvu a dávnej histórii spojenej s čajovou súpravou. Veľmi ma bavilo čítať túto knihu a odhaľovať dávno stratenú pravdu. Vytkla by som knihe jedinú vec a to zbytočne dlhý začiatok. Kľudne to mohla autorka skrátiť. Môžem ju len a len odporučiť.
