Together We Can: Everyday Australians doing amazing things to give our planet a future

Rate this book
Inspiring stories about people around Australia who are taking action on climate change, helping create a better future for our children and for the planet, while at the same time deepening connections with each other.

Millions of Australians are quietly freaking out about climate change, and Claire O'Rourke is one of them. We know the science is bad, we're signing petitions, recycling our garbage and switching our light bulbs to LED - and we know so much more needs to be done. Australia is on the front lines. It's going to take a big, all-hands-on-deck effort to turn this around, and it can be overwhelming thinking about where to start.

Together We Can is an invitation to anyone worried about what climate change means for our future on this planet. Claire challenges us to make the choice to contribute by reconnecting with our communities. You can start small and simple, and before you know it, it's empowering, transformative and hopeful.

Claire tells the stories of everyday people all around Australia who are already making a difference, and they come from every walk of life: food producers, sportspeople, financiers, psychologists, entrepreneurs, public servants, scientists, teachers, actors, farmers, kids and retirees. Our fragmented modern lives have pulled us away from the deep connections with other people that nurture and inspire. These stories show how how contributing to healing our broken world also enriches our connections with each other. It's what we need to face uncertain times.

I started reading this book because I wanted to feel less stuck and helpless and numb about the world and the future and the climate. It made me feel a lot better. Then I got up to the section about what are your skills and interests and what can you contribute and stopped reading for a while because I got really involved in an arts activism project instead. So I think it worked :~)

Like the author, I regularly experience “climate freak-out”. Together We Can is an uplifting and refreshing read, infusing our collective climate alarm with a dose of much-needed hope. It’s a warm hug to wrap yourself in when you need a reminder that when it comes to tackling the climate crisis- together we can.

"… the way you think is not the only way to think”.

Together, tackle climate action step by step, piece by piece. Each step we take adds up to a power force of local, national or global action. It is easy to feel like this issue is too big for any one person, and you can feel lost.

This book provides an outlook that gives you hope and can empower you to feel that you are not alone and are one of many in the fight to protect our environment. From using your recycling bin, booking a recycling power pick up, switch off appliances at the source – it all may seem small but if we are all doing it, it makes such a difference.

Climate action is transformative, empowering and hopeful, and Claire O’Rourke walks us through many stories collated from across Australia and covers a range of issues, such as loneliness and connectivity, permaculture, electric cars, climate distress, soliphilia, and renewable energy. This book really focuses in on the idea of hope.  Claire illustrates that hope in the context of climate action must be considered as both a choice and a practice – we have a choice to use our potential to make a difference in the work, no matter how small or big, as we have the ability to put into practice purposeful actions that do lead to positive change. Also a very interesting perspective on grief and privilege with respect to climate action. An inspiring book on a local and personal level.

Thanks Allen and Unwin for the gifted copy.

I'm enjoying learning about the steps people are taking to shape the Australia of tomorrow - one that puts earth care and people care at the centre. It makes me feel motivated to keep moving forward on my trajectory, knowing that so many others care, too. Together we can bring life back into balance and give a greater hope for tomorrow.

This book aims to help ease climate anxiety by focusing on positive stories of actions and progress in the climate movement. I like the concept a lot and it had some great info, but it didn't quite hot the spot for me. The first and last chapters were the best and I highly recommend reading at least those two!

Just the book we need right now - full of hope for the future in a time of climate anxiety. Claire's writing is engaging and accessible, with just the right balance of personal reflection, case studies and data. Highly recommended.

Lots of examples of different forms of climate action (by Aussies from all walks of life - a favourite is the guy who took his Tesla to his coal-mining hometown) and some practical guidance on figuring out what you can do (leveraging your strengths and interests).

Disappointing, I should have realised it would not suit me when the word 'amazing' is used on the cover. Not sure who this self help book for greenies is really aimed at, not me.
