Supernatural Affairs #1

The Werewolf's Heart

Rate this book
A supernatural detective goes undercover to catch a predator… love was never part of the plan.

Being a new homeowner is nothing like Aaron Honeywell imagined. Instead of unpacking and decorating, he’s suddenly dodging grabby fox shifters and getting a crash course in the supernatural world. And his teacher is none other than a drop-dead sexy werewolf who seems to want him too. But he’s sworn to put Aaron’s safety above everything else, including their desires.

Merritt Slate loves his job. Usually. It’s just hard to remember why when the detective is stuck undercover in suburbia to catch a predator powerful enough to abduct werewolves. He won’t let an innocent person get caught in the crossfire, so protecting Aaron is more important than his feelings, no matter what his wolf thinks.

But the threats lurking outside their cozy street are getting closer to home. Kidnapping shifters is just the beginning of a sinister magical plot that may require Aaron’s help to succeed… whether he’s willing to provide it or not. Can the werewolf protect his heart or will evil forces shatter it forever?

The Werewolf’s Heart is an explicit gay paranormal romance featuring action, magic, romance, and a happily ever after.

This is well written, but I just wasn’t in the mood for this type of story. I gave it just over 100 pages and just didn’t want to go on. No rating.

Aaron and Merritt's Awesome Story . . .

This is Merritt Slate/Jones and Aaron Honeywell’s story. Merritt, an alpha wolf shifter, is an undercover detective working for the Department of Supernatural Affairs in Raleigh investigating werewolf abductions. This is particularly worrisome since a werewolf is not easy prey. Four couples had vanished in the past 6 months. Aaron is his human neighbor who just moved in. When Merritt came over to introduce himself, Aaron was having a chat with a small bird that wouldn’t get off of his porch, at least until Merritt walked up. He and Aaron both feel an attraction to each other and their light teasing is adorable. When the bad guys become aware of Aaron and he is put in danger in the case Merritt is working on, Merritt is determined to protect him at all costs. Will he be able to do that and still keep his mind on the case?

The story line has humor, suspense, and mystery, everything to keep the reader’s attention. I enjoyed Aaron’s interaction with his neighbors, totally unaware of the supernatural world around him. He was so innocent and sweet! And Merritt explaining to Aaron that he won’t buy more furniture for his house because his family would come visit and won’t ever leave, that had me almost falling out of my chair. I just loved how the author built up the rapport between the characters while also showing us their personalities. And the story just got better and better with each page.

I've tried to read THE WEREWOLF'S HEART twice and the writing really doesn't work for me. There's something about the dialogue and the interactions between the MCs that just doesn't feel very natural.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Oh, this has mystery and mayhem all rolled in a suburban life style..haha poor Merritt weighted down with an investigation of  Werewolves that are missing while the list is growing. Meeting the sexy new neighbor was added bonus.
A home all on his own was so exciting to Aaron. That cutie is just full of embarrassing moments first with a bird challenging him to a staring contest while lusting after his new neighbor only never dreaming it is scent that was giving him away.. talk about more embarrassing moments to find out about.
Oh I liked Kara, right off.

I went into this story thinking it was going to be a paranormal MM romance. However, I felt that there was more of a paranormal urban fantasy with a bit of romance sprinkled in. However, I did enjoy the heck out of the story. I loved watching all the pieces of the case fall into place and trying to solve the mystery before it was revealed on the page (for the record I didn't). I also loved all the different relationships and how they were revealed at the end to be focused all around Aaron. I really loved watching Merritt become a softer and kinder person and giving into his love rather than being the stoic alpha male.

Found this one an entertaining ride that I got through in one sitting. I was expecting a paranormal romance but it was very light on the romance and more of a mystery.

The story starts when Aaron, a cheerful optimist who feels too much, buys a house in a suburban neighborhood that’s more than it seems. His smoking hot next door neighbor, Merritt, for one, who comes with the added complication that he’s a werewolf detective working a kidnapping case undercover for the Department of Supernatural Affairs.

This is a charming grumpy/sunshine romance that is very light on tension, internal conflict and angst and heavy on the fluff. I didn’t think much of the romantic arc but enjoyed the character pairing, though they could have used more character development. I found the mystery the more compelling part of the story; it was well done, kept me guessing, and finally, competent cops and a writer who’s done their research.

I found the author’s writing style a bit annoying for my own personal taste, though. The book was written in a very colloquial style, with lots of words like “gonna” and “kinda” scattered throughout the text, as well as an overuse of ellipses and exclamation points. It wasn’t the whole thing but it was distracting enough; it had the feeling of being written on a phone.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the characters and the mystery, and the world the author created was intriguing, though I found myself wanting to know more about the magic system. I’d classify this as a fun beach read and if you like unchallenging urban fantasy you’ll probably dig it.

Thank you to Booksprout for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

engaging characters

Rating: 3.5🌈

If you’re a lover of werewolf paranormal romances, then this new release, The Werewolf’s Heart by F.N. Fanning might just be the story for you.

The first in Fanning’s Supernatural Affairs series, it’s a quick flowing read that features a mystery, a mate bond, and magical evil doings.

Fanning doesn’t add any new elements to the werewolf accumulated species history here but does give us some very engaging characters in Aaron Honeywell, new to the neighborhood, and supernatural detective Merritt Slate, who’s team is “parked” across the street as part of a ongoing investigation into missing werewolves.

I enjoyed their romance but was missing a lot of world building and background on the universe they lived in, the sort of organization that employed Merritt, and well, just a good grounding in basics.

So I came away with having a enjoyable experience here with a romance that asks little from its reader other than a superficial entertainment. Sometimes that’s just fine.

It will continue in a book that focuses on Merritt’s brother, Chase, also a detective with the agency. This was fun so I expect to pick that one up as well.

This is book 1 of theSupernatural Affairs series. I didn't know the author well but I liked the blurb for this book. Am I ever glad that I chose it. I absolutely loved this book. I sat down and read from cover to cover without stopping. It is well written and easy to read. This is the story of Merritt Slate and Aaron Honeywell. Merritt is an alpha and a wolf shifter. He is also a member of the Supernatural Law Enforcement Branch in Raleigh. Currently he is undercover acting like a normal suburban homeowner. He is also living next door to his brand new neighbor Aaron Honeywell. Aaron is a first time homeowner. He is human and leads with his big heart. When Aaron and Merritt first meet there is a spark of attraction. With each meeting the spark turns into a flame. Then accidentally Aaron is pulled into the case. His life is in danger. This is their story. It is a paranormal romance but it is also a mystery. I found it laugh out loud funny at parts. I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I loved this story from beginning to end.

First of all this book has so many interesting and evil characters. It has action, romance, drama and is magical. Merritt Slate is a werewolf assigned to the Department of Supernatural Affairs as a detective. His partner also a werewolf is Gabriella Stone and the other agent is Chase Slate, Merritt’s younger brother. Across the street from the house they are staying in, Aaron Honeywell just moved into his new home. He is human and a call center manager.
The detectives are investigating the disappearance of 6 werewolf couple in the area. Aaron has no clue magical beings exist. Besides these characters there are evil foxes, a crazy mage, and other supernatural beings. This was a very fun book to read, it makes you smile, feel sad and definitely makes you want to know more.

This is the first book I have read by F.N. Manning and it certainly will not be the last. The book grabs you from the beginning and there is edge-of-your-seat drama until the end. With a lot of who-done-it, as well as a big dose of what-on-earth-is-going-on, the author successfully guides the reader through a well-crafted story. What makes the book extra nice is a sweet love story that develops at a believable pace. There is even a happy-ever-after ending.

A final thing I loved about the book is the author devoted a satisfying amount of book real estate to letting the reader know what happens after the end of the drama...something that not all authors do. I think the author is setting the stage for a series? One can only hope.

Your future comes to you in a dream... can you find it?

What a great start to a new series! The concept of Supernatural Affairs agents takes on new life. I was pulled into the story from the first pages. The characters are bold, their personalities are vibrant and alive. The sexual tension sizzles. Human Aaron has a latent talent. He gets swept up in the affairs of Merritt and his team. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan. Aaron faces danger, betrayal, and embraces his emerging power. Merritt struggles to keep things professional, but it's a lost cause. Good will triumph. HEA is assured. I can't wait to see what happens next. You are gonna love this book!

I enjoyed this M/M paranormal romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Aaron Honeywell and Merritt Slate.

Aaron Honeywell is an new owner of a house in a neighborhood. While unpacking he meets a neighbor across the street. The man is quite interesting to get to know.

Merritt Slate is a shifter. He also a undercover agent that is staying in a neighborhood. While walking around he meets the new neighbor that is across the street. The new neighbor is quite interesting.

This was a fun story to read. It had action, suspense, and drama within. It had a few laughs or giggling throughout it.

I received a complimentary copy via Booksprout. This is my honest unbiased opinions.

I enjoyed this story. I liked the wolves. I liked most of the characters, but I have a hard time liking Aaron. I can empathize with his struggles but he doesn't seem to contributes much. The story is exciting in it's mystery and the strategies. I didn't like that a lot went on in the background, then is presented to the reader. Too much is left out. I found Aaron's inner dialogue annoying. Supe Detective Merritt is used to the stress of the job. He is interested in Aaron, but he has a job to do. The mystery, the team relations add to a suspensful read. Does Aaron step up? Does Merritt get his bad supe? Good story. Nice start to a series. The team seems fun. Nicely done. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop! It kept me laughing and smiling at the various thoughts and reactions Aaron had to everything from talking to a bird, to being attacked by a fox with tiny knife claws, to finding out his neighbor was a "Werewolf Police" -" Are you part of a canine unit?". Merritt the Werewolf investigator had hot, flirty neighbor down! Swoon. The references to the scents Aaron gave off were priceless. "His arousal filled the street". Along with the banter and romance there was a gripping investigation to be solved as well! I grabbed this as an arc, and I have to say I am so happy I did! this was my first read by this author and I am now hooked!

First time reader of this author and I was truly entertained from start to end. A little action/violence, nosy but lovable neighbors, cool shifter/paranormal agents, hot sexy times along with sweet romance...a fun read. Loved Aaron and Merritt's flirtation then their mating/romance. So glad I was able to start off with this series because I can tell anything afterward will be a delight and fun to read. Hated to see end but excited for the next in the series.

Aaron moves into a new home & neighborhood. As he's unpacking he catches glimpses of his new neighbor Merritt, who of course is gorgeous LOL. As time goes on we come to find out that Merritt is a Wolf Shifter Detective who moved into his house to find the person looking to kidnap Wolf Shifters. There's humor, suspense, shock, and some steamy romance. *I was offered an "ARC" to voluntarily review this book for an honest opinion* This is the first book I have read by this author & after reading this one I will look forward to reading the rest of this series & others written.

I really enjoyed this book and found myself unable to put it down. Most of the story and characters felt fleshed out and I was really able to lose myself in the story, especially the chemistry between Aaron and Merritt. But whenever Rob came in, it just felt... unfinished. It was a little jarring at times but overall still a solid 4 star read and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Unexpected Love in Suburbia

Just the right amount of humor, paranormal mystery, entertainment, and character engagement. Nothing felt forced, and the plot rolled rather smoothly.
Aaron and Merritt were two forces I couldn't get enough of. Lots of laughs to remember long after you've finished the book.

I liked this supernatural detective book

I enjoyed this story because I was looking for a paranormal detective book where the characters weren’t annoyingly incompetent. I think the reason I liked this grumpy-sunshine book was because the story skipped over the details and left it to my imagination so I could imagine they were as good at their jobs as I wanted them to be.

Recommend if you’re looking for a sweeter romance with very little relationship angst.

First time reading from this Author

I really liked the characters. Aaron was so loving and sweet, Merritt all hard and hot. A great combination. The story was good but sometimes didn't make sense and some a bit confusing. But I sorted it out and I enjoy it. I will continue with this series as Chase gets his love in book 2

nice start

This was a nice start to a series. Good world build. I love the mix of different magic. Two men finding their person when they never knew the other existed. The writing was good. I do wish we heard more of M’s voice but it was nice to even have it. The smexy was ok. There want many. And I love chase and am very interested to see what frost is

3.5 stars. The plot ideas were interesting and the wrapping up of the plots had a few nicely unexpected twists. It was far more an urban fantasy without much of a romance. I didn't really feel a connection between the MCs other than the physical, as the story was focussed far more on the mystery. It was interesting how Aaron discovered so much about himself along the way.

Cute

This was a super cute story, and the love made me happy, but sometimes it felt like I was missing something in certain scenes... like I missed a sentence or two explaining how we got here. I loved the characters and the world, but I think it needed one more proofread.

2/2.5ish ⭐

I love a good paranormal romance - sadly this story didn't work for me. It had so much potential but the story line and pacing was just all over the place and the writing style just made things worse.
+ the ebook really needs some editing!
