Penguin Readers is an ELT graded reader series. Please note that the eBook edition does NOT include access to the audio edition and digital book. Written for learners of English as a foreign language, each title includes carefully adapted text, new illustrations and language learning exercises.
Titles include popular classics, exciting contemporary fiction, and thought-provoking non-fiction, introducing language learners to bestselling authors and compelling content.
The eight levels of Penguin Readers follow the Common European Framework of Reference for language learning (CEFR). Exercises at the back of each Reader help language learners to practise grammar, vocabulary, and key exam skills. Before, during and after-reading questions test readers' story comprehension and develop vocabulary.
Emma, a Level 4 Reader, is A2+ in the CEFR framework. The text is made up of sentences with up to three clauses, introducing more complex uses of present perfect simple, passives, phrasal verbs and simple relative clauses. It is well supported by illustrations, which appear regularly.

Woot woot! Finally I can tick off “reading classic” from my What to Read list, though this book is not the OG Classic of Emma, but it’s fine! I have to start somewhere right? And for this book I choose to start with the Penguin Readers version.
First thing first, what are Penguin Readers books and what are the differences of this edition compared to other books? The Penguin Readers series offers a great selection of books with exciting titles including popular classic, contemporary fiction and thought-provoking non-fiction that aim for non-native learners of English.
Since this book is intended for language learning, please do not expect to read something that can lay out in depth exploration of the story, be it the characters or the plot. Its goal specifically to let the readers know what the story is all about in a simple and easy text and along the way introduce them to a new vocab. Mine is a Level 4 Reader edition, hence the story is designed with more complex uses of clauses. Also, with the assist of B&W illustrations, it will elevate the learning experience for the readers. I really think this book is a great alternative for students and teachers or in my case, a beginner in classic literature.
For now Emma is the only book that I come to love. For those who are not familiar with this story, Emma follows a story of a beautiful, rich and clever young lady who loves to imagine herself to be naturally talented at playing matchmaker. At the heart of it, she has made well-intentioned efforts to try to help her friend to find a great partner. But, the problems start to arise when what only seems to be a harmless process ends up jeopardizing the relationship of others.
The core message of the story is to point out that we should always learn to listen and be respectful to what people decide to do in their life and stop making them feel bad for following their choices just because it doesn’t align the same with your journey. We shouldn’t feel entitled in projecting our ideas and meddling in other people’s life. A path that's right for you isn't always a path that's right for others.
All in all, I really enjoy reading this book!

I didn't really like it because some turning points are awkward and unnatural.
The plot itself is interesting. Emma is a cheerful and lively character but she can be a little too oblivious sometimes.
I am reading the classic one but my teacher told me to read this version since it is in the freaking syllabus and honestly, it spoiled the story and I really hate this version.

Since I cannot seem to focus long enough to make it through an adult book during this pandemic - why is my brain so scattered??- I opted for this version so that I can feel like I’ve accomplished something on my list during this time. It gives the gist of the story, but it’s definitely choppy and lacking. I WILL read the full Jane Austen book one day soon....hopefully :)

This book is a super condensed version and a fun quick read to remember this storyline. Love Jane Austen stories!
