The bestselling and award-winning Steele Shadows series continues in this new Protector Romance spin-off series, packed with page-turning mystery, steamy angst, exotic locations, and four dangerously attractive mercenaries.

She was supposed to be the mission. She became his undoing.

When American schoolteacher Samantha Greene goes missing in Mexico, the US government calls on private military firm, Astor Stone Inc., to assist in finding her. Former soldier Roman Thieves volunteers for the case, seizing the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. After-all, no one knows the dark underworld of human trafficking like he does—or knows exactly how involved he is in their business dealings.

When the mission falls apart, Roman finds himself on the run with the blonde-haired, green-eyed bombshell, seeking refuge in the untamed wilderness of the Sierra Madre Mountains—on a trail rumored to be haunted, nonetheless. With only a small bag of provisions, they must battle the elements, including scorching hot temperatures, and work together to outsmart the savage predators hunting them.

As his motives become clouded by a fierce need to protect Sam, Roman must choose between avenging his past and saving the woman who snuck her way into his heart.

Thriller romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: ☺️😊🙃
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Samantha - she was an elementary school teacher who loved her life, loved her students and loved her mother. While on vacation in Mexico, she was taken by human traffickers and spent weeks in a dirty cell in a basement of a small house. Though she wasn’t raped, she had to sit and listen to other women getting raped over and over. She saw children brought in and her captors cut off her pinkie finger. Though she kept her spirits up since she was a beautiful, blonde, American woman and being kept for something more than many of the other captives.

The Hero: Roman - he grew up extremely poor in Dublin, Ireland. His mother was forced to be a prostititue, and she was murdered in front of Roman by two well dressed men. He killed one of the men and promised himself that he would one day get revenge against the other man. Meanwhile he went to the states, joined the special forces, and ended up becoming a mercenary and assassin for a private security firm who got contracts from the U.S. government. He later killed that man, but his son Connor had taken over and expanded his business to become a global network of human trafficking. Roman started to infiltrate the group, planning to get his revenge through the son. He certainly deserved to die.

The story: Roman got a job from the government to rescue Samantha, they had intel that she was being saved to be the slave, or wife of Connor himself and she had spent time with Connor and might know where he kept the flash drive that had all the information to bring down his global network of human traffickers. Though the government cancelled the contract when they got word that Samantha had been murdered. Roman didn’t want to give up on his revenge, and left his job to go rescue Sam and take down Connor.

This book was good in ways but bothered me in others. The information about human trafficking given by Roman at the beginning of the book via his inner monologue was so thorough. I learned things I never thought of, and it is so hard to believe that in this day and age such brutality, cruelty and disregard for life still happens. Much worse that human trafficking is so lucrative a trade. There are just so many morally decrepit people in this world to kidnap and sell women and children as sex slaves, organ donors, baby factories, and the fact that wealthy people all over the world are willing to buy them or buy time with them. It just makes you sick to think of how many people are involved in this trade in one way or another.

The main plot and storyline of Roman and Samantha’s escape was particularly good. Though I did not like some of the dialogue, some of the conversations between the two main characters seemed immature and forced. Also, it was insta-love, they were trudging through the jungle for only a day or two before Samantha was declaring her love for Roman. Roman had been interest in Sam as a woman since he first read the dossier on her and did more research on his own. So, it wasn’t surprising that they fell into bed together, I just think they fell in love kind of fast.

This audiobook was told in two points of view via duet narration and was narrated by Alan Carlson and Amy Duechler. I hadn’t heard either of the narrators before. Amy Duechler has a bit of a deep voice for a female, though it is soft and intelligent sounding. Her male voice wasn’t too bad, which is a plus since it was dual narration. Alan Carlson did well with the Irish accent and though he wasn’t one of my favorite male narrators, he did a fine job.

With the blurb, and after reading another romantic suspense by this author, I was excited. In the end, this book didn’t do it for me.

There sure was a solid world-building, with some mafia type organization, human trafficking, exotic locations, undercover agents, personal dramas… All the ingredients. It took many chapters to introduce this universe, and I was okay with that because it helped with diving into the main characters’ psyche too. We learn their background, their feelings about their current situation, their struggles and moral dilemmas, and Roman develops a strong interest regarding Sam, the woman he must save.

So of course, I was waiting impatiently for their first meeting, and it kind of delivered. Except for Samantha who suddenly forgets about her situation, to lust after the dangerous stranger. Okay, maybe I’m not totally fair–it is implied that after such a long captivity, any escape is better than rotting there, and she sees him as the key to get out of her cage, literally. I was still uneasy with how fast she’s falling for him, especially since, at first, she doesn’t know who he is.

After some complicated intrigue to get Sam out, she and Roman are in the jungle, trying to survive. That was maybe the best part of the book, but it was rushed. Too many things were supposed to happen in such a short time, especially Roman and Samantha spending time together until real feelings develop. There were real feelings by the end of their trip, but I didn’t see the falling.

Roman in full protective mode is sexy, and he takes good care of Sam without making her a damsel in distress–as he teach her some self defense and survival skills. And they have some conversations, but he already knows everything about her, so it’s kind of limited. And yet, they’re suddenly madly in love. After such a build-up, it happens way too fast.

To top it all, there are hints at supernatural forces that become nothing more than a plot device, a deus ex machina kind of thing. And the ending is the farthest from closure I’ve read in a long time.

It felt like blowing up a balloon and not tying the end, so it deflates until there’s nothing left. It wasn’t an unpleasant read, but there’s was no balance between the world-building and the actual story.

Quickie

- Series: Steele Shadows mercenaries #1 (links to other series by the same author)
- Hashtags: #romantic suspense #instalove #age gap #ghost
- Triggers: human trafficking, violence, torture, death, mention of rape and drug use
- Main couple: Samantha Greene & Roman Thieves
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 3/5
- + the whole survival part was nice
- – the romance part, though…

Roman is a special ops mercenary who has made it his life’s mission to take down a huge sex trafficking ring. Sam is his current target to save. She’s a teacher and Roman has done everything he possibly can to learn as much about her before completing the task. He’s now in love with her. How will that affect the outcome of his decisions when taking down this trafficking ring?

Be sure to check trigger warnings should you need to. There is a lot of dark material. This story will get your adrenaline going as Rowan fights against all odds to save Sam. There were plot twists that I didn’t even see coming!

I really enjoyed this book. I’m glad I found this author, I love her writing style and this world that she’s created. I can’t wait for the next book and I’m going to dive into her backlist too!

ARC!

Now this is a good book!! It has it all: drama, great plot, amazing characters, and well written.
The book follows Sam and Roman. Roman is an "agent" working for a private company who could easily be called spies.
The book starts horrible, not because it's bad, on the contrary, what Sam goes through since the very first pages and chapters is horrible; spoiler: SHE LOST A FREAKING FINGER! I cried like a baby!!
Roman was enamored with Sam, he researched her and got to know her by following her story and her everyday life in order to find her.
He eventually goes rogue and goes after her.
This is kinda of a slow burn, cause there are a couple of chapters even before they meet.
And did I search even when I was reading the book ahead to know when, YES I DID! i was getting anxious.
But once they met, it was beautiful. They are kind soulmates, and honestly their attraction was right from the start, but it also felt strange and fast. They felt attracted to each other, and specially from her POV it was really "strange". Now she does express how weird it is to fall for him so fast, but as an avid readier not really LOL I've read worst and falling for your personal hero isn't that weird.

The characters have amazing development, and the storyline is really good and solid. What is better is that Sam grows exponentially in the book. She grows into an amazing woman, she already was (being a teacher and all) but now she learned to be strong, she learned to fight and survive. She fought for someone else than her and that to me earned her points.
Now did i wish a longer epiloge? Yes. I felt like they finally had had their HEA but it was really short and I wanted to read more.

Check CW!!

This book is intense and so good. It is filled with action and some pretty big surprises that you won’t see coming. Samantha was kidnapped by a trafficking ring and Roman was hired to try and find her. What people don’t know is that Roman has been working undercover in the trafficking ring for many years trying to catch the person who killed his mother. Their journey is one that will leave you on the edge of your seat and make it impossible to put the book down.

I loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series. I read it in one weekend, because it was that good. It was so fast paced and just kept me so enthralled that I couldn't put it down. There were parts in this book that were sad, because you know this stuff is really happening in the world, but Amanda did a great job with it. I read all of her books, and like her others, this one is staying on my Kindle to be read again. Amanda McKinney is definitely one of my favorite authors and is so gifted in how she writes.

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

Her Mercenary is such a thought-provoking story, the issues it explores makes you take stock and really think about what you would do, how you’d possibly react and feel. Of course, not being in the same situation you really can’t say exactly but it does make you reflect on the very real-life issues that unfortunately happen every day.

This is the first book by this author that I have read. I always enjoy finding new authors and I know it won’t be the last book I read of hers as I am so impressed with this story and the style of writing she uses to create a very intriguing and entertaining tale.

Holy moly, there are some hair-raising moments in this story that certainly get the old adrenaline pumping. Lots of drama and action with twists and turns but I did not see the biggest twist of all! I love it when a story isn’t predictable and this one sure isn’t! I totally recommend this story to everyone who enjoys a quality romantic suspense story.

This was my first read of Ms McKinney's work. I seem to be drawn to the romantic suspense stories and she did not disappoint. It was a fast paced adventure with many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. Never really knowing who you can trust and who is on the wrong side.

Roman is here for the job as well as here for his own personal vendetta. Somehow he has been able to weave his way into the middle of the biggest human trafficking ring all in the attempt to get to the leader and take things down. It's believed that this woman he is trying to get to safety can help him to avenge his mother and her loss. He wasn't prepared for the feelings she draws from him.

Samantha just wants her boring repetitive life back. How did she end up here, what did she do wrong? Though she has been locked up by these evil people she has been spared for some reason. Sadly watching women come and go, understanding what they have gone through while away. Holding strong and trying to find a way out. When your mind decides that being owned by one might be better than the hell you are in now. Will she be able to continue to be strong and fight for freedom?

Can Roman complete his end game and keep his heart cold as ice? Will they save Samantha and the others?

Her Mercenary by Amanda McKinney
Steele Shadows Mercenaries #

Every book I read by this author is a keeper! Once I began this story…I could not put it down…even when electricity was cut and I was under the mosquito net in the dark…I read on using my phone instead of my computer…LOVED this book!

What I liked:
* Samantha “Sam” Greene: Kidnapped in Mexico, American school teacher, divorced, single, beautiful, to be sold by human traffickers, resilient, strong, wise, caring, perfect for Roman
* Roman Thieves: Irish, orphaned early in life, immigrated to US, ex-military, works for Astor Stone, Inc, mercenary, strong, lethal, revenge oriented, undercover work for decades, perfect for Sam
* The first person telling of the story that switched between the two main characters
* That I who reads the end of books first did not see some of the twists, turns, and surprises in this book
* The dark gritty real feel of the story
* Knowing that this was fiction and yet also being aware that some of what transpired in this book is all too real and happens more often than we may realize
* Feeling I knew the characters and that I was with them on their journey…the good, the bad, and the ugly
* The growth and change in the characters and the positive impact they had on one another
* The slow reveal of who took Sam, why she was taken, and what the purpose was
* Finding out Roman’s backstory and learning with him some secrets that his mother had kept
* Learning a bit about survival, fishing, and a few other things
* Seeing a few of the men that work with Roman
* Thinking about how much undercover cops must go through to do their jobs…not fun…but it was interesting to think about…and wondering where lines are drawn when undercover
* The feel-good positive ending to the story

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what I was meant not to like
* thinking about and knowing that too many humans are kidnapped and sold every day.
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely!

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This is my first book reading from Amanda McKinney and I was in for a treat. I honestly thought it would be heavy on the romance and just very minimal on the action side but I was clearly wrong and thank goodness for that because this book took me places. It is intense, gritty, and plucks at your emotions until you don’t know which way is up. Roman Thieves is on a mission for revenge and he has been at it for as long as he can remember. When he is hired to save Samantha Greene, who has been kidnapped by human traffickers, it is an opportunity to enact on his revenge, one of which he cannot and will not let slip by. Throughout the novel, there is so much on this dark side of the world that paints realism that it’s kind of heartbreaking. I’ve read a lot of novels where the heroine is in danger but this novel is something else. Roman’s character is dark, crazy, imperfect, and definitely revenge-crazed. It isn’t until he meets or actually studied Samantha for the mission that he is challenged to think beyond the dark world that he has been living in for his whole life. She is his opposite and even in the face of death, was still able to inflict emotions that Roman hasn’t felt for a long time. And it slowly chips away the pain that has been his motivation to live all these years. He is slowly finding a new meaning in her and that is the story. Although, I’m not too keen on the quick exchanges of I-love-you’s, the plot and characters make up for it. I enjoyed reading this and though it is dark, violent, and tells a story that you probably don’t even want to be reminded that does exist in our real world, you will not regret picking up this book. Looking forward to reading more from Amanda McKinney.

Her Mercenary was such a great novel with an amazing plot. It did take a bit for me to be fully invested as there was a lot of setting to set and backstory to understand. Once it started going it didn't end until the final page. Definitely worth it ! This revolves around human trafficking and darker themes. @amandamckinneyauthor has a beautiful way with words even with those dark subjects.

This story will give you spine tingling chills and make your mind go a hundred miles a minute thinking what you would do, and the fact that this does happen more than we know. The plot was well constructed and perfectly woven giving you little twists and turns at the right moment to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The romance in this book did happen a little fast for me between when they officially met to the love part, but I can understand in those circumstances. With the action packed story it will not deter you from enjoying it to the fullest. This was such a great ride and I'm so excited for book 2.

Wow! Roman and Samantha's story is one that will stay with you. Roman is one of the most complex characters I have read by this author. There are so many layers to him. Sam is fierce. She isn't some average damsel in distress and I loved her strength. The pacing is fast with a lot of action and suspense. The romance is slow burn and well written. Readers will become so invested in these characters. Fans may recognize some of the characters that pop up which was a fun bonus. Seriously, who doesn't love Jagger?
This story contains some real dark and gritty portions. I love that the author didn't gloss over them or try to pretty things up. I felt the fear and pain right along with the characters. And I felt the triumphs as well. The ending was perfection. Right after I got past that jaw dropping stunner of a reveal. Excellent read!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Her Mercenary held me in its pages. I admit I am a fan if Amanda McKinney. One thing I love is the time the author takes the time to develop the characters and everyone around them. We, as readers, really get to know them and the world they function in. Her Mercenary does have some triggers, especially dealing with human trafficking but this wasn't an issue for me. There is lots of action and intrigue but Amanda McKinney will have your emotions all over the place. If you are looking for a light romance read with no substance, look elsewhere. I recommend Her Mercenary as an action, suspense romance.

I have read all of the books from this author. I have found that she has a way to pull you in and I can't put the book down until I finish it.. this was no exception.

This book is full of action, suspense and keeps on going. Samantha was kidnapped by a trafficking ring and Roman was hired to try and find her. What is unknown is that Roman has been working undercover in the trafficking ring for many years trying to catch the person who killed his mother. So he is very close to the situation and then becomes emotionally involved. The journey they go through in the jungle is one that will keep you reading hoping it goes the way you want it to.

I recommend any book that Amanda McKinney has written and look forward to her next adventure. She has a writing style that grabs you and keeps you reading.

I did receive an ARC of this book and will probably also buy it so I can read it again.

A great read

Wow this book was amazing! Even though I don't read this type of storyline often, it's one I enjoy, and this did not disappoint. Set in the world of human trafficking and covert black ops there is action and intrigue, and I was absolutely enthralled. I really enjoyed the story's premise and the intertwined romance between Roman and Samantha.

It gets insta-lovey, given the circumstances, but when you're running for your life every second counts! The author was able to build enough emotional depth, despite the tight pace, quick action and plot twists to really invest me into their storyline. A really exciting, pulse-pounding and ultimately redemptive read.

A new to me author, I will be reading more!

Another great book by Amanda and this had one of my favourite story lines! I love a good rescue and escape through the jungle. This has an amazing connection between Roman and Sam. Roman was a real alpha and he felt this instant connection with Sam who was just a sweetheart. Plenty of heat between the two and action as well. Great to see a brief appearance from Ryder as well. Overall I really enjoyed this book and speed read as I wanted to reach the end. One of my favourite stories from Amanda I loved it. Great read and one I would recommend.

Suspenseful, emotional and a great page turner! Sam has been kidnapped and she is scared and unsure what is going to happen to her. She has hope she will be saved but the longer she’s there the more she sees. Roman has spent his full life doing what needs to be done to get the job done. Good or bad he does what needs to be done. Roman had a tough childhood and has the emotional baggage to prove it. Can Roman save Sam and finish the job he started? Roman gets the surprise of the lifetime when Sam knocks him on his butt. Sam is everything someone like Roman needs. I loved Her spitfire personality with his take charge attitude. I enjoyed this quick emotional read. The book was quick paced with a action packed story. The characters had great depth and a few great twists. I really look forward to reading more books by this author.

Amanda brings us back to the Steele Shadows world and I could not be happier! Once again she paints a picture that leaves you wanting more. This time she tackles human trafficking, and brings us the terrifying assault to the body, mind and soul. Her characters always have depth and Sam and Roman do not disappoint. Each brings a strength that they did not know they had but will need to get them out of this situation. Page turning angst that I could not put down.

If you love strong characters, a story that will keep you wanting more page after page this book is for you!

This author has the uncanny ability to completely unhinge her readers. This book left me raw, emotionally spent, heart in my stomach the entire book, and a few kleenex at the end to boot. This story deals with drugs and human trafficking, heart-wrenching, because you know it goes on in today's world, but Sam and Roman, just wow! I truly would love to spend just one day in the mind of Amanda McKinney, her books rip her fans to the core with the intense storyline and leaves you picking yourself up off the floor in the end. This was a real page turner, you did not want to put it down because you had to find out what was next. Bear, Maisie, Marcus and the Astor Stone hunks just brought this incredible story together. Loved every bit of it!

Amazing! Amanda McKinney has written this book in First Person Point of View and it's like standing right next to Samantha and Roman. The descriptions of what is happening, the feelings behind emotions, and the sights and sounds of the jungle in Mexico is outstanding! Gripping, Sexy, and Unputdownable

Her Mercenary by Amanda McKinney is an addictive romantic thriller that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. I absolutely loved this book—the chemistry between the characters was electric, the suspense was sharp, and the pacing flawless. Holy OMG, this went deep into the underbelly of human trafficking, and what good people have to sometimes sacrifice to stop it, yet stay alive. Amazing twists in this suspenseful and soul searching romance. Roman and Samantha couldn't have been more different, yet they had an unbreakable bond.
Going rogue is never a good idea, but when there's feelings involved all bets are off.
I was riveted to this from start to finish, and often with my emotions in my throat, scared spitless, running (in my mind anyway) away from all the evils these captives faced. Yet, it is a romance, and a good one. Realistic to the nth degree!!
Lucky enough to receive an early copy, I have it pre-ordered as well, just that good!!
All thoughts and opinions are strictly my own.

Yikes! Her Mercenary is a spectacular romantic suspense by Amanda McKinney. Ms. McKinney has once again provided readers with a book that is well-written and populated with perfectly imperfect characters. I am not a fan of first-person, alternating point-of-view books, and I avoid them. If you're like me and avoid them, make this author an exception to the rule. I don't even notice it in her books. Roman witnessed his mother's murder and he killed one of the men that killed her. Thirty years later he's working for Astor Stone, Inc. and looking for a woman that was kidnapped. Sam lives a normal life, teaching school and just being a decent person. When she's kidnapped she's confused and fearful. Roman and Sam's story is packed with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. This book kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I can't wait for my next book by Amanda McKinney. Her Mercenary is part of the Steel Shadows Mercenaries Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Her Mercenary by Amanda McKinney is an intense read and noty for the faint hearted with murderous trafficking ring of sex slaves and a HOT mercenary. The book should come with a hotness rating in the double digits.

Our female main character, Sam, is a teacher who was kidnapped. She doesn’t know where or why she was taken, but she is chained up in a cellar with others. Her pinkie had been cut off and used to confuse people into thinking she was dead. Roman is a mercenary who works for Astor Stone and was hired to find and save Sam. However he also has a second story, wanting to kill the family - the man - who killed his mother. In this mission the two goals are intertwined.

The story was busy with criminals and politics and just plain evil. I loved the chase scene in the jungle and cheered at the end with the twists and turns. Her Mercenary by Amanda McKinney was a good romantic thriller.
