FBI Agent Sara Carter is mourning the fact that her father was killed trying to stop the abduction of her half sister years before. It's the reason she became a police officer and the reason for her robust policing style. When that style becomes a problem for her resident agent in charge, she is forced to accept a secondment to Interpol in East Timor. There she is assigned to investigate the abduction of babies in the mountains along the country's southern border with Indonesia. Interpol has reason to believe an international racket is involved.
The Crocodiles Kill is the perfect start to a crime series set in the exotic location of Timor Leste. Perhaps the setting will be unfamiliar to the American reader, but the characters are highly relatable. An FBI detective sent to work with Interpol (Carter)and an investigator with the local police force team up to find out who is stealing babies from the outlying villages and where are those babies ending up. This is right up Carters alley as she had been investigating missing children on the Navajo reservations in Arizona. Their investigation is complicated by the local belief that crocodiles had the power to create the land and spirits inhabit the forests. A dead body found on a beach being eaten by a crocodile and subsequent shooting of it stir up animosity toward the police increasing the danger to the two investigators. Will they find the most recent kidnapped baby before it’s too late? Snappy dialog, a tightly woven tale, and rich descriptions of the setting make this a series well worth diving into. There are now 6 books in the series, and I can’t wait to read the rest and find out what’s next!
