We think we're fooling everyone with our fake relationship, but maybe we are the only fools around.
Caleb
Nobody ever looks past the mask I wear. Nobody bothers to scratch the surface. Not until I meet Jayden Harris, the adorably bossy scholarship student with a razor-sharp focus and an unbreakable determination to be the best of us all.
He says he doesn’t have time for dating. He says I’m just a player. Yet every chance we get, we orbit one another. If I could prove to him that I’m worth falling in love with, he might change his mind.
But asking him to be my fake boyfriend for a massive family gathering probably wasn’t my greatest idea. Dad is tearing us apart and my will to fight for control over my life is fading. My plan is ruined.
We’re a lost cause, but I just…can’t…let him go.
Jayden
It was just a one-time thing. And then a two-time thing. And a three-time thing… Before I know it, I’m in his fancy car, heading to the Wine Country for an extended weekend. My mission? Be the loving boyfriend you bring home to meet the parents.
I’m risking my scholarship and my future at the elite Highgate Academy for a charming stranger in need of a boyfriend. Why? I wish I could tell you. All I know is that Caleb’s funny, hot as hell, and has the most adorable secret ever.
But there’s more to him than I imagined. The wealth he enjoys traps him; his father controls him. And he thinks I’m the key to his freedom.
I’m doing my best to convince everyone that we’re a couple.
But maybe I’d be wise to remind myself that we are not.
The Fake Boyfriends Debacle is the first installment of the Frat Brats of Santa Barbara series. It features two strangers falling head over heels for each other, a big, crazy family, an elite private school bustling with hot, adventurous guys, steam to make you sweat, and a grand happy ending that’ll make you swoon. You know you want it.
Sometimes, I’m enjoying a book so much thoughts cross my mind that I have to write down to throw in a review. Other times, I’m just truly mindlessly enjoying a book so much, escaping that I have no thoughts and write nothing. This is one of the latter times.
It was easy breezy, no-angst cuteness and sometimes you just need that. I will definitely be looking forward to future books in this series.
Here’s some of the good stuff: The infamous Rich boy/poor boy trope All-boys private school setting Beach shenanigans Fake boyfriends Necktie pulling Characters who come to logical conclusions, how novel. Gramps Sweet HEA
I’m struggling a bit - is this a 3 or a 4 star read? Probably somewhere in between, but I’ll round it down because I wasn’t really invested in the characters.
Jayden and Caleb are both students at the same boys-only college in Santa Barbara. And yes, dear readers, you need to turn your reality check off for this book, because this college is not only inclusive, apparently almost everyone is gay/queer. So if realistic scenarios are your thing, this book isn’t for you.
Back to the story: Jayden is a scholarship student, Caleb is one of 11 (!) friends who apparently rule. They’re rich, but not mean, and from the moment Caleb and Jayden set eyes on each other, they can’t seem to be able to keep their hands off each other, either.
There’s not a single “bad” character in this book, not even Caleb’s father. Everyone is good natured, funny, or quirky, so again: if you’re looking for drama, this isn’t for you, either.
It’s a sweet, uncomplicated book with quite a bit of steam, perfect for an afternoon spent on your sofa or on your sunbed.
Well this was a nice surprise. 🤩 I totally judged this book by its cover because the dude on front looks like someone pasted the head of a 12 year old boy on that body and the entire series has covers like that. Add in the fact I’m not a fan of frat stuff and I had washed my hands of this series. After finishing Jack Addison though, I was in a funk because how does one go from that ridiculousness to normal books 🤷🏻♀️ but then this sample appeared in my kindle and I liked it enough to give it a whirl. I liked it for the most part.
Caleb and (shit I can’t remember his name *looks it up* 🤣) Jayden were adorable together. I really liked both of these guys especially how each of them didn’t fit the rich/poor boy stereotype in general but also to each other. They have a one night stand a week before school starts and it rocks both their worlds. They agree to one time but Jayden seeks Caleb out and soon they are fuck buddies then fake boyfriends. Honestly, I thought the fake boyfriend thing was a bit ridiculous but I went with it. While this book was predictable af, it was exactly what I needed and the sex scenes were scorching hot 🥵
My only issue with this book is the setting because it’s supposed to take place in Santa Barbara, California and be set in the fictional private all boy college, Highgate Academy. All of that would make sense if this was set in high school but because it’s college, I kept forgetting this was supposed to be in the US, in a place I’ve visited FFS 🤦🏻♀️. It’s actually rare to even see the word “academy” when referring to schools here and I’ve never seen it applied to a college, private or not. This may not seem like a big deal but it kept taking me out of the story and it annoyed me. If this was high school, the young guys on the covers might make more sense too! But I digress.
Despite my issues I thought this was cute and it got me out of my book funk so I’m happy. I did like the characters enough to want to keep reading this series too.
I only started this because I wanted to read book three, but I wanted to do it in order, and I loved it more than I thought I would! The start is a bit rushed, but it makes a lot of sense after since it lays the base for the rest of the story. It’s a cute friends with benefits to fake dating to lovers story, and perfect if you want something that’s not too long.
The opening sex-on-the-beach scene alone is worth the price of admission.
So even if the plot is a bit too fanciful to be credible, what these two fuckbuddies-turned-fake-boyfriends-turned-lovers do on the sheets and in the showers will make you sore, if not soar.
"My dreams dissolved like ghosts in the fog. The only thing that was solid in that fog was his shape, standing somewhere in the distance, calling for me."
Oh, this was such a cute, low angst, quick little read and I loved it! 😍
Hayden Hall is a new-to-me author and The Fake Boyfriends Debacle is book one in the Frat Boys of Santa Barbara series. This is Caleb and Jayden's story.
I always think of books like this as 'palate cleansers'; you know, when you just want to be entertained, to escape for a few hours in a happy ever after romance and not have to have your heart and soul dragged through the wringer with an angsty dark romance or high octane, murder mystery/thriller. This is one of those books 💗.
TROPES
You will enjoy this, if you love:
🌶 MM college romance 🌶 Fake dating 🌶 Forced proximity 🌶 Strangers on a beach 🌶 Opposites attract 🌶 Steamy times 🔥 🌶 HEA
There wasn't much faking. More like pretending to fake. I'm not complaining. Not at all. Fake dating isn't exactly my favorite trope. Obliviousness on the other hand, that's so much more to my taste. And so I ended up liking this book more than I expected to.
Although written from alternating point of views, this book is mostly about Caleb, his friends and his most of all his family. We learn little about Jayden and at some point I was even thinking he must be an orphan. But then again his parents were mentioned like three times so he's obviously not.
I generally love Hayden Halls books. They're well written and uplifting. This book is no exception either. It was pretty much what I was expecting. Even more so, because the fake dating didn't drag on and on, and it also wasn't the cause of the third-act-drama as one might expect.
2.5 ⭐ Fake boyfriend trope is always a good time, no matter how fast paced and silly the book is. This story is taking place at a college, which is hard to believe since its an all boys university and more than half the population is homosexual. Well, okay. I ill take that as high fantasy sir. Anyways, this all boys university book is strange because it gives 0 headers for dual pov and I didnt even know it was dual pov until I was like huh what the hell is going on, in the second chapter. So yeah, I guess it just switches back and forth each chapter but like yo give me a name or some shit please. Also these two fell in love, but girl I will tell you what, I dont know when the fuck that happened? When they were fucking? or during that singular deep conversation they had when Caleb showed Jayden what he really wanted to do in life? Girl your guess is better than mine. So like the story is kinda bad, and the romance is not even there and like I was confused. But either way I had a pretty decent time. It was like okay, I didnt fucking hate it but it was nothing to write home about. And sure I enjoy a fucking nothing happening, boring, same thing as every other book, but you gotta give me at least something to work with. Some sort of romantic aspect for me to give you at least 3 stars. Please, I enjoyed it, but the more I think about it, I cant justify over a 2.5 because we dont really get to know people main characters included other than their singular personailty trait. Sucks.
Ok, but can we talk about the cover? That face/head does not go with that body. That is the head of a child. It’s very disconcerting. And makes me giggle and cringe in discomfort every time I see it.
But, whatever. Story. This started off pretty strong and the first half of the book I was really loving the characters and their dynamic together. And then it just… sort of… floundered. I’m not sure why, because I can’t really pinpoint anything in particular that bothered me or didn’t work for me, I just found myself skimming more in the second half. Still enjoyable, for the most part, just didn’t work as well as it could have, I guess.

I'm sick. Like sick sick. And on a lot of cough/sinus meds. So I'm a bit high. And this book might have felt a bit like a fever dream. And I'm okay with that. Did it fully make sense why Jayden was so opposed to just dating Caleb to begin with? No. Did I care all that much? Also, no. I'm not going to look too deeply into this one. I'm not sure I'll keep reading the series but it was fun while it lasted!
🏳️🌈 poor kid/rich kid 🏳️🌈 One night stand to lovers 🏳️🌈 No third act break up 🏳️🌈 Low angst
Some random thoughts from my notes app while I was reading:
Jesus Christ. Either this man can write a sex scene that’s transcendent, or my cold/flu meds are making me high.
There are some really well written lines in this book. Very vivid. Poetic. I kinda wished I’d read it on my kindle instead of audiobook so I could highlight and post them.
RTC but ahh this was so sweet. I always enjoy these kind of sweey and super low angst books and I did enjoy this one a lot. But I had some troubles connecting with the characters and their stories that stopped me from fully loving the book.
I received an ARC of this book; and this is my honest opinion
I really tried to like this book. Fake boyfriends is one of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately, this was a miss for me. Since this is my third book by Hayden Hall I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s me and not him. His writing style just doesn’t work for me.
I listened to this as an audiobook and I know if I’d read it instead I would have DNF. I didn’t care much for the narration because I often couldn’t tell when he suddenly switched from Jayden to Caleb. Other than that I thought he did a good job with all the other characters. I always feel bad leaving an uncomplimentary review so I’m going to avoid Haden’s books in the future.
Its strength and depth of character is heartwarming. This isn’t your typical light and silly frat boy book. The characters are strong and assured, even when they aren’t. I love how they keep surprising one another as they peel back their layers and get to know each other. And I enjoy how they love the others ‘flaws’ fiercely. Oh, and the family is delightfully quirky, so much love for Gramps and the Aunt squad.
If you want a great romance story about two young adults figuring themselves out and supporting each other with all they have, and with a hefty side of steam, you can’t go wrong with the Fake Boyfriends Debacle.
4.5 Stars
< ARC provided by GRR and this is my honest review >
I'm not usually a fan of higher heat reads, particularly ones that stem from an initial one night stand, but this worked for me.
It's a sweet college read, with prince/pauper themes in dual POV first person. Caleb has a bit more character growth than Jayden, but the boys are super sweet to each other in the face of a particularly domineering family member.
I would have liked to know a bit more about Jayden, we don't really learn much about his family or background as Caleb's is quite overwhelming. It's also billed as a fake boyfriend story, but this doesn't happen until much later in the story than I'm used to.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I have chosen to leave an honest review.
I was craving a college MM romance read and I found this book among by TBR list and decided to give it a go! I'm attempting at discovering more MM romance authors so this was the perfect candidate. I loved the beginning of this book, it started of great and the characters were very sweet as well. It was during the middle to end that it kind of lost me, I'm not sure if it's just the stresses of life at the moment, but it was a bit boring in the middle parts.
Overall, this book was a cute and light read, just wasn't for me unfortunately.
I had a hard time getting into this, I’m not sure why. I was a little confused about the academy. I didn’t think they had school uniforms in college so I kept picturing 16-17 year olds but it didn’t fit with what else was going on. I didn’t understand why having a relationship was going to damage Jayden’s scholarship.
Caleb’s family was interesting and I liked the MC’s but I found myself putting the book down often.
There was a lot of sex (i skimmed the last scene) and a HEA but I’m not sure I’ll read the others in the series.
A twist on the fake boyfriends trope that made me smile. Wonderful characters. A believable plot and a HEA that makes you feel great. Highly recommend.
Great book! I read this book in my spear time between all my other books and family like. This book was easy to pick up where I left off. Jayden and Caleb were wonderful together and I enjoyed the connection and chemistry between these two. There wasn't a lot of drama but a really good HEA.
