Shifter Rescue #5

Baby and the Enforcer

Rate this book
How many times did you get beaten down before you stayed there?

Charles had survived abject cruelty for twenty years, the loss of his babies, and any family. Now, when he was in what was supposed to be a safe space, he didn't think he could take one more hit.

Fox Turner--so named because he played fast and loose with those that saw him as easy, was really hiding a betrayal he didn't think he would ever recover from.

Can two damaged souls ever make a whole? Or will the sins of their fathers make them turn away from each other, and the hope and love they might find?

Bullets and Babies!

Victoria writes about guys loving other guys in between dodging bullets, kidnappers, and serial killers. She enjoys putting them through hell to get their happy ever after—it’s a character flaw she embraces.

She also believes that family is who you choose, that dogs are often much wiser than human beings, and that we’re steadily destroying the world we live in.

And if people read more books, they'd be much happier.

It was so good! I'm sad it's over. I'd been itching to get to Charles and Fox's story! It was everything it promised to be and more.
Plus, that thing I remember complaining about not remembering where the characters were from or who they were related to? Fixed here. We get the half a sentence intro! Given that we have so many people, it makes life so much easier!

What a beautiful story. Such a thoughtful and sweet ending. I loved the story so much and I’m sad it’s over. I couldn’t put the story down once I started. It was definitely worth staying so up so late. They made a beautiful couple. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I liked this one better than the rest of the series. You get better insights into what is going on in the two MC's minds and hearts. Still I would recommend not starting out with this one as the book starts of rather abruptly, assuming that you have read the previous books as well as remember the times the two were making googly eyes at one another in them. What I liked is Charles' dedication to the youngsters as well as Fox' devotion to Charles. Fox surprised me actually, he was so different in this one than I thought he would be or. Well, to be honest, I couldn't quite picture him before, but what I had in mind was a "biker dude" or "macho warrior". Not that gentil giant you seemingly does a lot of the research for the pack.

What I simply had to overlook was Charles' backstory. I've read some novels before where one of the MC's came out of an abusive relationship like in the contemporary romance novel Yanni's Story. To be at least a little realistic Charles should have had major PTSD, anxiety as well as intimacy issues. I simply cannot believe that a person, who has been abused for over a decade, who has had multiple miscarriages and children taken from him as well as had been r*** for dayS straight by multiple men just before he came to the pack, would "treat" himself to a little birthday fun - even if the man is his mate. So in my mind I just blanked out the severity of his past abuse and the story fit much better with the progression of their relationship.

What is also something you had to get used to in this series was that some major happenings are happening off page, like Fox fighting his way to Charles, or when Fox finds out Charles has been kidnapped or him doing research for a certain project I'm not going to name here. So you are very often treated to the result but not to what had to have happened to even reach that point.

So while I really liked the characters and the babes and the world in general was interesting, there just was something missing for me that kept me wanting.

I'm confident that there are people out there that will connect will all the characters and couples more than I did and for all those people this series is sure to be a treat. So don't let me stop you and try the first of the series Baby and the Wolf.

perfect ending

I took my time with this book because I knew it was the end I’m gonna miss this family of mitch match shifters and all the love that came with it. I’ve been waiting for Charles to get his book the one with the saddest story the one who even through all of it still managed to come out of it and love everyone. I love that even though he’s made it and has his family he still has open arms for others. I loved how all these strong mates would tear down the world for their Omega‘s. I love the fight for justice and equality I hope one day that bleeds over into the human world as they would call it. The writing was great the Smexy was wonderful and though I know this is an end I hope we get to visit this pack in the future. Thank you for a wonderful shifter series and I hope to see more from this author.

While this, the last book of this series, gave us a lot of twists and turns... the unexpected ending(s) far outweighed any whining I may have done about grammatical issues!

I knew that Charles and Fox/Gray were going to have a rough time finding their HEA, but hey what is a shifter story without a kidnapping and a couple of bloody battles?

Did want to mention there were tears... lots and lots of tears at the end so grab the tissues and be prepared!

My final words are "justice was served" and will leave it at that!

I was looking forward to Charles' story but this just kind of fell flat. I wish that the author would have had the characters spend more time in their animal forms; it almost felt like an afterthought or an excuse to have men being able to get pregnant because of the alpha/omega dynamic. That being said, this is another series where the omegas aren't just there to make babies and look pretty. They took an active role in the story and it's a great change of pace. I typically don't read omegaverse stuff, because the omega is always a useless twink who does nothing but pine for his alphas c*ck, but I love mpreg so it's always hard to get my fix. This series scratched that itch overall, but it still just kinda fell flat .

Not to mention that the ending hardly felt like an ending, and I was so confused with all the kids by the end. Whose kids were whose, how many each couple had, etc. Not to mention that they fell into pack dynamic so quickly. Ryker hardly fought it at all. And Emmett was just casually okay being shoved into their world because "lol cis men can have babies and I'm pregnant with a man whose name I hardly know who ditched me for seven months and oh yeah, he knows my father who I assumed was dead?!" Oh and the fact that Fox and Charles just decide to keep the baby that isn't even biologically theirs?

I think that this series could use an overall epilogue, with one chapter dedicated to each painting just to set things all straight. I think I'd need that to really believe this series ended strongly. I might listen to it again, John Solo did fantastic, but this won't be high on my read again list.

Charles, having endured two decades of cruelty, loss, and familial abandonment, finds himself in a supposedly safe environment but feels he can't withstand any more pain. Fox Turner, despite his outward appearance of playing fast and loose, is concealing a profound betrayal from which he believes he'll never recover. The summary questions whether these two damaged individuals can find wholeness together, or if the "sins of their fathers" will prevent them from embracing the hope and love they could share.

I loved this story with the two damaged men who were still drawn together. Charles lived through so many painful things but was still strong enough to give unwavering support and love to the omega children in his care. Fox even with his damaged childhood was caring and determined to love and support Charles. Huge emotions and feelings in this story with the necessary drama thrown in too. This was an MM story with mature content.

Charlie broke my heart. He was used as a breeder and with each child that was ripped from him, another piece of his heart was ripped away. Fox knows that Charlie is his mate, but when he jumps the gun, it blows up in a spectacular way. When Charlie finds out his is pregnant, he is scared to let Fox know as he had stated that he never wanted children. The reasoning is heartbreaking. Charlie is also scared when he finds out that he is pregnant again he just knows that he will lose due to all the medical issues he has. Since this is the last book, the over arcing story line does resolve in the end. And what Fox does for Charlie was perfect. Perfect ending to this series.

I received a copy of this book from the Author, and this is my honest opinion

This is one of those stories where someone has to realize that they are worthy of love and are loved just as they are before they can accept that someone might love them back. Charles absolutely broke my heart in this one. He has suffered so much and is finally starting to find his way. Fox just wants him. Once he figures out what Charles is struggling with, he is determined to win him over. I love the way these two are with all of those kids. It really warms my heart.

What a stunning conclusion to this series. It is now Charles and Fox’s turn at their happy ever after. It was great to see how Fox was with Charles and spoiling him. The mystery throughout the series was handled greatly. I love mpreg and it was great to see the others in the series. I recommend this series; you will not be disappointed. I received a copy of this book for my review.

Although I enjoyed this one, I was also kind of overwhelmed with all of the characters (there's like 20,000 characters...lol). I also didn't care for the Elena storyline (also felt it ended in a rather anti-climactic fashion), but anyway....you know how when you watch a TV show and the villain is so terrible, you just want them to hurry and get what’s coming to them…but they never do. It’s just episode after episode of them causing trouble and you’re just frustrated that the ridiculous storyline is continuing. That is how I felt about Elena. Outside of that, I also thought some of it was just over the top. When Charles finally went to Marco to get evaluated and Marco started talking about shifter genes, neurodivergence and ADHD, I was like what is going on. I did love Charles though and was so glad he got his happily ever after. I felt like his and Fox's story were secondary to everything else that was going on in the book, but again I was still glad to have read them. Maybe 3.5 stars...but could use another round of edits.

perfect!!! (maybe spoilers)

I’m officially a mess, that ending! I’m crying like a baby. I’ve been so invested in this entire series and Charles stole my heart way back in book two when he was first introduced. He’s been through so, so much and he wholeheartedly deserved the happy ending he got. Fox was the perfect alpha for Charles and the two of them coming together was just beautiful.

I really liked the way the series wrapped up, all the loose ends were dealt with and it wasn’t overdone. Personally I think there is potential for a spin off and the author has floated the idea of a short story for Regina which I would read in a heartbeat, I’m just not ready to let this world go but I’m satisfied as a reader if this is goodbye.

Absolutely wonderful series with amazing characters that I highly recommend. I do suggest that anyone new to the series checks content warnings as the series deals with some heavy topics that could possibly be triggering.

Also one final thing, my name is Emily so I’m going to be emotional about that baby name for a long time.

This was intense! Charles has lived an extremely abusive live since he was sold at 14. He has been raped, abused, drugged, trafficked and bred miscarrying many children, delivering more. In his early 40s, he is resigned to never having children he can keep, an Alpha mate or his happy ever after. He never forgot his first child, Charlotte whom he named, nor the others. He provides love and comfort to the children in his care with a supersized generous heart. Fox/Gray, carried heavy burdens in his heart and mind. He felt unworthy to find happiness in this world, but he knew Charles was his mate. The path is not smooth for Charles and Gray, but their tragedies make them stronger as individuals and solid foundations for each other. Will they reach out? Can they accept that they are entitled to happiness? Can Charles and Gray finally find peace? Any chance Charles can find his lost kids? Excellent story. I wish it was longer. Nicely done.

For those who've read the series, this is Charles's story. At last. I love this character, an older omega who has had 12 babies, all taken from him at birth when he was with his former master in another pack. Older now, and this uterus full of scar tissue, he's content to be the foster father for the orphans in this pack of mixed breed shifters. Until one night when he gives in to Fox, a sexy alpha who is his mate, though Charles refuses him time and again. A pregnancy results and Charles is too afraid to acknowledge it, and then later is too afraid to see the fetus on scans. He's sure he'll lose it so doesn't want to get too close. Poor guy.

There's plenty of other adventure within the pack as well because the panthera, the bitchy tiger queen, is acting up as is one of her sons. This story includes pack politics, shifter rescue, kidnapping, love, mating, birth, and a happily ever after. Well worth waiting for Charles's HEA.

Charles and Fox are wonderful.
We come to the end of the series where we get a conclusion for the evil of the series which is a wasn’t really the point of the book and in a way it was anticlimactic because it all happened away from the POV however it also made it kinda perfect.

I just liked Charles getting his forever and that it was all wrapped up so nice and sweet. I liked Fox and knowing more about his past and him getting his mate, add the kids, because even though they are in all the books who Charles is made them more present in this book. I enjoyed it, and even though I’m kinda sad it’s over I know the world isn’t

I hate to see this series but it ended in a good way. Charles and Fox are great together once they got over their hangups. Charles thinks is broken and unworthy of his mates because he can't have kids and was forced to give them up. Fox has had a difficult past and thinks that he is not worthy of having kids and they both need each other but don't act on it at first. Fox has a little girl and she brings these two together along with help of the many friends and families they have developed. The book is very emotional, sweet, funny, action-packed, and very emotional, and these two just broke my heart. The ending is the best part of this book and I enjoyed it.

Fantastic!!! I could not put this down!! Charles was a survivor, albeit a somewhat broken one. Fox was Charles mate, but Charles had rejected him. When Charles ends up pregnant, Fox finally gets his chance to prove he’s worthy and that he loves Charles. This whole series has been amazing and I’m sad to see it end. A mystery is wrapped up. This story gripped me, kept me engaged and didn’t let me go!! Overall, a fantastic read!! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend.

I must say this book made me cry more than any other in this series, not only about the characters story but also knowing this is the final book in this series.
I was waiting for Fox's story for a while now and it was magnificent.
The twist and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, needing to know the out come of the ordeals the omegas had to go through, their struggles and pain, the secrets. It was worth it in the end.

Thank you Victoria, I truly love this conclusion. Knowing you, you have more in-store for us and I look forward to reading it all.

This was sooo good but WOW did it ever break my heart for a lot of it but it's okay it fixed it again. Definitely my favorite of the series!

QUICK THOUGHTS
-- Wolf shifter/Omega pairing -- mpreg -- really hard on my heart -- made me cry -- a lot of drama -- definitely some sweet moments -- chosen family -- kids (lots of kids lol) -- LOVED the MCs... Charles & Fox -- more mature MCs -- characters from previous books play a large role -- "The End" came way to fast but a very satisfying ending -- NOT a stand alone -- I hope there's more

No really, I cheered out loud and my sister who was visiting thought I’d lost my mind! GREAT READ! Great job again Victoria Sue! I can’t wait for the next installment!! YAY!!

Very sad for the end of this series, but I have loved every moment of it and every character in it. Naturally it had to go out on a big finish, and this certainly delivered. Charles just breaks your heart, so I'm glad the end finished with his HEA. Fox has always been quite a private character, but you can't help but feel bad for him. Lots going on in this book, some twists and turns, some comeuppance and a lot of love.

I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.

Charles gets an HEA!

I have been waiting patiently for Charles to get his story ever since he was rescued. He was so sweet with the kids and he definitely deserved a happily ever after. Fox was the perfect patient man for Charles and once he put his mind to it, Charles had no defenses to ignore the persistent man. I did shed a tear or two as Blue and Mo got their forever family too!

What a series! I’ve immensely enjoyed all the books, the romance and the plots. Charles’ story got me emotional, on the verge of tears. Happiness is of one’s own doing and Charles held off his for the longest, but his pure heart showed him the way to open up and let his mate Gray Fox in and they lived happily ever after. Beautiful story, narrated by the Master Narrator John Solo. They almost don’t come better that this. ❤️🩷💙

I had completely forgotten about Charles even though, he was mentioned in each of the books. Some much excitement/action in this book that it nearly overwhelmed me. There are many surprises in this book and even I had the trusty Kleenex box out by me. However, I am so glad that Charles got his HEA and Fox was able to overcome his fears. The Shifter Rescue Compound is growing! Down the road, I may pick this series up again to reread.

I am so sad to see this series end and yet I was so happy to see Charles finally get his HEA. I have been invested in all of these characters since the beginning and I loved how everything was finished. I really hope that maybe we can eventually see more books set in this fabulous world. This was such a great story and an even greater series.

Perfect ending to a great series!

I’m so happy that we got Charles’ and Fox’s story to wrap up this series. It was heartbreaking to see how much Charles suffered in his life. Fox is the perfect mate for him and just wants to take care of Charles. There’s plenty of action and excitement as well as the pack deals with their enemies.

In this concluding book of this series, Charles finally gets his mate.
Rescued with the other omegas, Charles has been through his own trauma, in playboy Fox he finds someone who cares and nurtures him.

With the overlapping story arcs from the previous books being tied up in this book, this was a fantastic conclusion to this series. A really enjoyable read.
