Pass on this! Please read this spoiler review.
I want you to read my review so you don't have to waste your time on this book. There is one manipulation after another. The author has no skill in writing anything that is believable.
The Heroine of this book as a little kid around 4 or 5 years old witnessed the gruesome murder of her father.
The book never establishes any reason, motive for murdering this cop or how it could have realistically happened. How did the female killer get into his home and torture and murder him without the neighborhood hearing his screams??? Not possible.
Fast forward to 20 years later with the killer's boyfriend on death row for her crime. The only evidence against him is a cigarette from a different crime scene and the 4/5 year old who who claims he did it.
No prosecutor would accept this flimsy evidence. They had zero physical evidence of him at this crime scene the cigarette remember was from a different crime scene they want to link to this. The book doesn't explain the connection. They didn't have bloody clothes, a murder weapon.
The murdered cop's partner sees this guy at the crime scene without any blood on him and no weapon so bingo he did this grizzly murder.
The book doesn't explain why he was around to be caught and how his girlfriend who did the crime was able to escape with herself covered in blood.
The crime scene would have had her DNA there. She would have left hair, dead skin at least.
The grown up girl has to become a psychologists so 20 years later she can become part of this story.
The cop who arrested the guy on death row is now the #2 guy on the entire police force. He is too high up on the food chain to do everything he does in this book.
The people connected to his conviction all start to be murdered the same way the guy on death row was said to murder people.
If his girlfriend wanted him out of prison why wait 20 years and only a week before he is scheduled to be executed to do this copycat murders?
She would not have in real life. She had to so the 5 year old girl could grow up and become a psychologist so she could be part of this criminal investigation.
The book has a crazy ending with the investigating cop being a villain the heroine of this book hates and was happy ☺ that he was brutally tortured.
The book is much worse than I have been able to say here. It is a man hating book where the men are stupid and vile. Worse according to the heroine than a serial killer who is a sadistic murderer that loves to hear her victims screaming.

Thank you Netgalley and Sterling & Stone for the copy of Miserable Lies. The writing was great, so great that I bought other books by this author as soon as I finished the book. The story was intriguing and really made me want to discover the truth. I did find the characters difficult to relate to or like, even Danica. I also didn’t find Cole believable. But, this was still a good read and I recommend it to anyone that wants a well-written story.

The novel started out on rocky ground, leveled out through the beginning to the middle, began to fray when crossing halfway, and unraveled into a tangled mess in its conclusion. Despite the rocky start, I had high hopes for the novel. The premise was promising--set into the repercussions of a serial killer on death row while the officer who put him away has expedited his career and public stature. Meanwhile the young girl who witnessed her father's death wrestles with the possibility she could have recalled the events wrong in her testimony used to seal the murderer's fate when a so-called copycat killer is loose on the streets. All of these pieces made for an engaging plot, but I found the execution to become a bit muddled.
What I hoped would have become more prudent throughout was the urgency and suspense of trying to unmask the copycat and the fear Quentin Porter had towards his own life and the life of Danica, daughter of Quentin's old partner and victim of the Magistrate Murderer. Instead, the novel became more wrapped up in the sense that we as readers were missing valuable pieces of information. Being left out of the loop is a suitable plot piece for mystery novels, but there is still the need to include bits that lead the reader to infer the rest of the story.
Another piece I felt was missing was character development of all persons of interest. Quentin and Danica profiled several potential suspects to be the copycat killer, but as I read, I didn't feel there was enough background given on each to make up my mind on who I thought the killer was. As I continued, I had no emotional attachment to the characters or the killer, and by the time I learned of the killer's identity I was neither shocked nor attached to the knowledge. I understood the want of curbing the reader's ability to guess outright who it would be, but I needed a connection more solid than was given.
A strength of the novel was the writing itself. The use of words and phrases as descriptions truly put me into what was happening. The writing style King used was phenomenal. I didn't feel lost in the description, and King utilized his expression of words.
Overall I'm giving the novel 3 out of 5 stars because I felt there were a lot of missing pieces needed to understand and appreciate the storyline. Contradicting that, there were also pieces included, such as characters, who played no major role in the novel and weren't used as prominent characters to the plot. If we had received more detail and background on these characters, it would have developed that side of the story to coexist with the rest.

I didn't know what to expect with this book Miserable Lies by Nolon King as it was a new author to me and the cover did not grab me!. But, I was surprised and really enjoyed it I found it a page turner.
A man called Linus Cole has spent 20 years on death row and still is saying he is innocence to this very day! Now he is scheduled for execution, but, some are publicly questioning Linus Cole’s guilt!
Only a very young child who's testimony puts Linus Cole there and at the scene. What really happened on the day of the murder and what are the Detective's hiding.
Is the man on death row really telling the truth and is innocent?

However, it turns out that Port may have lied to get a conviction. Why? Because he "knew" Linus was guilty, and wanted to ensure a conviction.
As Linus is schedule for execution, questions arise about his guilt. Danica Tate, who looks at Cole as a second father (her father was killed by Linus - or so Port says), investigates. Port then races against the clock to discover who really was the killer, while keeping Danica safe, and trying to keep his MISERABLE LIES hidden.
This story was really interesting, and I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong. - which I really loved. It was entertaining and well written. However, it seemed too short, and well.....,.. it was just missing something. I was able to put this down, and pick it back up, and put it down again. It didn't grip me. I enjoyed it, but wasn't sucked in. I wanted to be, but it didn't have that extra "something"
I do want to thank the author, the publisher and #netgalley for the ARC which did not impact my review. 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Even though I usually like Mr. King's books, I was disappointed in this one because there doesn't seem to be any likable characters here. The main character that I assume is supposed to be the heroine, is whiny, tempter-tantrum-throwing, demanding, and sometimes unreasonable. She seems to think that she has the right to be told every single detail of the investigation into her father's murder 20 years previously. For me, instead of making her a sympathetic character who is struggling, she comes across as vindicative and hateful. I can't go into more details without including spoilers, but if you read it I think you'll understand what I mean. It was also confusing for me because I wasn't sure which character I was supposed to be pulling for. Who was the good guy and who was the bad? I really wasn't sure.
However, like most of Mr. King's books, there is plenty of dark, stressful, suspenseful, almost creepy action here. It is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
I'm not going to let one disappointment deter me. from trying other books by Mr. King.

A mass murderer on death row for 20 years is about to be executed after California has lifted its moratorium on the death penalty. The now Deputy Chief of Police who cracked the original crime despite his partner's death at the hands of the killer. The partner's daughter, whose testimony as a child put the killer behind bars and who has regarded the Deputy Chief as a surrogate father, a task he promised he would carry out on that fateful day. But then more bodies, all connected to the original case, a copycat killer, or is the wrong person awaiting execution? Motives questioned, long buried secrets unearthed, lingering doubts no longer able to be ignored. Nolon King does an excellent job of questioning whether the ends ever justify the means, leading to a concluding scene that's definitely not for the fainthearted, and, ultimately nobody facing either closure or redemption.

Miserable Lies has a well-used plot, someone is accused and sentenced for a crime not committed until everything presented at the hearing starts to be questioned. The big difference, in this case, is that the story is very well written, it is fast-paced, the circumstances are believable, and the culprit is caught in the end but not before causing more damage. Danica devoted her life to helping people and finding the truth about her own family, and that will almost cost her life and whatever resemblance of familial ties she had with the one that was nearest to her. Miserable Lies is a great story and a must-read for those readers that enjoy this genre.

If we want to reduce this novel to its bare minimum, we can say that it is about two kinds of love. The possessive, selfish and egocentric kind, which hides its nature behind the excuse of protecting the other; and that of someone who puts the well-being of the other above his own, up to the extreme consequences. To this already quite explosive mixture, a good dose of mental illness in the form of bipolar depression must be added, and an equally generous dose of child abuse. In short, a thriller that behind the typical serial killer story hides a complex and decidedly unusual plot. The only flaw: some concepts, in the form of the protagonists' reflections on themselves, are repeated too many times, so much so that one feels like saying 'I got that, move on'.

Intriguing story figuring the lies. Cheating. Murder. Lies. Manipulation. Distrust. Trauma. Danica annoyed me most of the book with her immaturity and childish thoughts of how the world looked. How often she stupidly put herself in danger. Really no one had a good character in this. And of course the unanswered questions:
1) Why did Tuesday all the sudden start killing in the hometown again after 20 years? Why did she start burning the fingers?
2) What exactly made Emilia lose her mind when she loved Quint? Why didn’t Quentin ever visit her?
3) Why was Luther so sketch and creepy in his interviews and appearances? He just had some off vibes.
4) What was the point of the details of Charity’s therapy to then just drop the story? How was Danica even a functioning therapist??

I started this book thinking I might know who the real killer is, but no - that wasn't it.
I like the way being inside the characters' head leads you on a rollercoaster of feelings, hopes and doubts. You see the world specifically through the eyes of trauma, and the main characters are the product of a world of pain - and I mean here the killer as well, even if there's no POV from that particular brain.
And through this stark, miserable life, you get to see how, for better or for worse, love is blind - even, ultimately, self-love.
Again a good book from Nolon King - a king of this genre.

This was my Amazon First Reads pick for April 2022--It was kind of a pick the least objectionable title month for me because none really grabbed me.

*Port's told many lies--some to himself, and some public. He concealed an affair. He concealed a note that his late partner received (the physical note may have burned up in the fire but it was not reported). I think most of all, he's lied about not liking the notoriety the case brought him.
*Cole's told lies of omission. He knows the real perpetrator of the crimes he's been imprisoned for but never tells. Well, except to Danica in a round-about way.
The characters all seemed kind of cardboard to me.

So I enjoyed the story being told. But, I find his stories very slow moving — though the storyline itself is good and I want to know what has happened. The pace is slow and draggy.
Starting a new book of Nolon’s; I know right off that it will be hard to get into the book but worth it in the end.
I don’t know how he could change that.

This page turner takes you into the lives of Quentin and Danica. Quentin is a cop who lost his partner to a serial killer. Danica is his partner's daughter. You are taken on a thrilling ride as they search for a copycat killer and the truth of who really killed him comes to light. There is an action filled ending that you don't see coming. Definitely worth reading!

Maybe more of a 3.5. I liked the premise of the story, though it felt a little flat and like it was missing something. Danica's dad was killed 20 years ago by the Magistrate Killer, Linus Cole, and as the execution date of said killer looms, a copy cat killer starts killing people that convicted Cole of the crime all those years ago. Is it a copy cat...or was the real killer never caught?

This was a good read. The mystery and overall theme kept me entertained and encouraged me to continue reading. The author took the time to develop good characters with real emotional problems and conflict. The chapters did not seem rushed and the ending was left open enough that a sequel could be written at a later date. I would recommend it.

Rating could have been higher, profanity ruins storyline.
Enjoyed reading this novel. Moral questions, unique story line. A good cop or bad cop? Cover up versus love & honesty. What does it require to be faithful or want justice? Either way is a dilemma to over come. No correct answers. However, way too many "F" words spoiled the intriguing suspense & mystery.

Blown Away, Again
It’s a terrible and twisted story and you are totally sucked in, before you realize it’s happened! Interesting characters and a deep dive into the dark depravity of a serial killer and something so much worse. I personally kept hoping a certain character would be more than they seemed to be. Not worth it
Such an unrealistic police procedural. The characters were unrealistic and boring. There was no real emotion and several characters weren’t even needed. It seemed more like an outline of a story that was never fleshed out.
I don’t recommend wasting your time on this one.

Miserable Lies
Excellent suspense filled story about a twenty years old murder and the seeming copy cat murders that start occurring just as the convicted killer's execution date approaches. Kept me on the edge of my seat.

Nice who done it mystery

Great police thriller
This story snagged you from page one. So many twist and turns. The main character Dances really had a terrible life. The fact that she brought the serial killer down was extraordinary. Great read!

Good Story
I enjoy Nolon King’s work. This was a good read, with a pretty close to believable story. The writing was done well and the main characters were well depicted.

I liked the action and thought processes of the characters. There was a couple grammar mistakes but it didn't detract from the story. Overall good read!!
