An interesting read, although I think some of the claims went too far. I'm a physician, and it's true that our medical training largely neglects issues that originate in the oral cavity, not really paying attention until they become systemic. I completely agree with Dr. Hoss that oral care is very important to overall health -- though of all the diseases he listed that have some sort of oral component, it's also important to recognize that correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation. I can assure readers that developing leukemia or solid tumors elsewhere in your body doesn't tie back to whether you brushed your teeth or flossed enough. For me, the most valuable parts of this book were learning about the role of pediatric dentistry and orthodontia besides braces early in life. This would be a fantastic resource for new parents.

This book contains useful information about oral health, but the author's style was not my cup of tea. He was either presenting the horrors of not taking enough care of your mouth - and I mean, HORRORS, or idealizing the benefits of taking good care - eternal youth, riches, beauty, a sea of friends and admirers - you get the general idea.
Although I see the reasoning for both arguments, for me, it was overaccentuated and put me off.

I am a pediatrician and someone sent this to me at work. I have enjoyed it and have learned many interesting facts/ideas. However, some ideas have been presented as being known or straight forward that simply are not and this is likely to mislead or confuse some readers. I found my self checking medical resources and studies to find a some quite different presentations of some of the topics.

Probably an intriguing read if you’re an overly-cautious parent or someone who is overzealous about how aspects of your environment impact your health. Coming from the perspective of someone who has spent years forging their own opinions working directly in the dental field—the book came across as quite dramatic.

Some interesting information was provided in this book. Written by a pediatric dentist, naturally there was an emphasis on regular checkups with a pediatric (and adult) dentist. This is to be expected. I wish there was more information concerning the ingredients on oral hygiene products, the good and the bad.

If your mouth could talk was written by Dr. Kami Hoss, an orthodontist, and dentofacial orthopaedist, specializing in the diagnosis, presentation, interception, and treatment of dental, jaw, and facial irregularities. Dr. Hoss tells the connectivity of oral health to the holistic function of the body. The book was well-researched and the profound statements made are insightful and beneficial. The information presented was medical however the author did not use jargon that was incomprehensible. The information was concise and well-presented for the layperson to assimilate.

Holistic dental specialists accept that what occurs in our mouths influences our whole bodies. Accordingly, parents will be highly appreciative of Dr. Hoss’s perspective on juvenile dental health and empowering steps that can be taken to make changes to oral routine. The author opens by providing factual data about the benefits of good oral health and habits. The author states, “your mouth impacts everything, often silently, and without you even noticing. Once you start to be more aware, you’ll realize that taking care of your mouth is essential to have a good life.” The book illustrates the capacity of proper dental care to treat the whole person.

Dr. Hoss communicates his knowledge of the science and strategy of dentistry in a manner that is fascinating and straightforward, yet the book is far from facile. It is meant for readers who desire to think critically about their health and well-being, as well as policymakers inquisitive about the public health issues presented by the methods of many dental practitioners, and even dentists themselves who are unfamiliar with the concepts discussed by Dr. Hoss. The author writes with a necessary zeal, as he is confronted with the effects of an unhealthy diet and patients with limited knowledge of oral care. The author incorporates the use of visuals to aid in understanding and this in itself adds to the value of this book are a resource. New and expectant mothers will appreciate the parents’ checklist should they wish to establish a dental home for themselves and their families.

Apart from shedding light on dentistry, the author elucidates on sleep, its benefits, the types and stages of sleep, and its correlation to dentistry and holistic oral health and well-being. Treatment options are presented and the author suggests lifestyle and behavioral changes that can be implemented.

If your mouth could talk was written by Dr. Kami Hoss and is a compelling and uncomplicated read that would be appropriate and life-changing for all ages and education levels. Adults making an effort to improve the whole family’s oral healthcare habits should read this.

This book is targeted towards parents and how to care for children’s teeth, but I found it to be a very informative book! The information is laid out very plainly and a good portion of the book is dedicated to a glossary and reference notes, which I thought was very helpful in a book that is looking to introduce the average person into oral healthcare.

Kami Hoss begins by introducing us to general subjects like epigenetics and how your mouth has its own microbiome that is important to upkeep. It slowly eases into tips for expecting parents, the importance of dental care starting from when they first get their teeth, why seeing an orthodontist early is better than later, and even helpful ways to ensure that you are using dental products that are actually helpful for your dental routine. It went together very well and touched on a lot of details and health complications I wouldn’t have expected from poor dental care otherwise. It was interesting and a bit stressful looking at how many things could be impacted by oral health, but I did enjoy seeing all of the research in those particular sections as work is slowly down to find reasons why something happens, like Alzheimer’s.
While a portion of the book focuses on what lifestyle changes one can make to ensure that their dental health is better, there is an acknowledgment that there are outside factors can play a large role in why you may have poor teeth. From living with others with bad oral health, fear of the dentist, genetics, money, and more, your mouth has a lot of factors that can impact your oral health. As Hoss mentions within the book, any step and individual change you can make is important. I don’t have great teeth myself, but I do what I can to upkeep them because a little bit is better than nothing. It felt very reassuring in how doing even a little bit can help keep your teeth in better shape. I’m sure parents would also appreciate the advice on when to start seeing dentists and orthodontists for different issues and general care as well. I made notes of those sections although I have no inclinations towards children myself as I thought it was a very good baseline.

Overall, I thought the book was incredibly fascinating. There was a lot of care put into assembling the book, researching new topics, and checking for any errors. I would definitely recommend it to people who would like to know more about how to take care of their health or are simply interested in learning more about their dental health.

If Your Mouth Could Talk provides a wealth of information about oral health and the implications our mouths have with our overall health. The author, Dr. Kami Hoss, raises awareness and debunks many myths regarding oral health by sharing his extensive knowledge with readers from the perspective of his work as an experienced orthodontist while also shining his enthusiasm for advancing oral health care and wellness. One of the primary themes in this book is also helping parents empower the lives of their children by providing teachings on how proper oral health can actually extend longevity when given proper care starting even with the child in the womb. It is an interesting and novel concept that is clearly guided through the compilation of scientifically backed information thoroughly cited throughout this book. This is the author’s first book and I found that it was impeccably organized for digesting the extensive amount of information provided therein. Readers are met with simple yet relevant clip art and side notes that serve as a mental break in between the main chunks of writing. Each chapter also begins with a brief bullet point summary of what to expect from that portion of the reading. I found that these organization details really added to the flow of the book and made it fun to read and learn from each passage, which would otherwise almost feel like a textbook of material. Tactfully presented, I found the writing to be quite interesting and to some extent even humorous due to the fact that I’ve never heard information about the mouth being communicated in such a way before. The book drives the connection home between how important it is to become more informed on oral health in order to live a healthier, happier, and longer lasting life. On the other hand, the discussions within this book are presented from a very strong scientific understanding of the human body which oftentimes neglects a holistic approach to medicine, health, and wellbeing. It is up to each reader to truly do their research and ultimately decide which methods and recommendations are best suited and applicable. If there could only be one take away that is implicit throughout this book, it would be to round up the whole family for a visit to your local dentist as soon as humanly possible. If Your Mouth Could Talk has a great potential to educate people about the body and encourage people to appreciate dental visits rather than fear them.

The health section of my local newspaper years ago published a short piece about dental care that pointed out the close proximity between mouth and brain. It seems like such an obvious point, but it stuck with me—mostly as a low-level hum of anxiety about the implications of my eating habits and coffee and alcohol consumption.

Dr. Kami Hoss’s book explains oral health—why it matters, and how to maintain it—both accessibly and in depth. I suspect that 10 or 20 years on from now I will feel very fortunate to have encountered this book when I did and (hopefully) headed off some problems. (Though I’m not a parent, there is much here about children’s oral health that would be of tremendous interest to me if I were.)

The book does a good job of busting through much typical complacency about oral health. It does this in part through a fascinating cultural history of dentistry, including how it became professionally separated from medical care generally (spoiler: this separation was a mistake with far-reaching negative consequences). I’d also not given much thought to little details like how dentists wear short coats and doctors wear long coats. This detail may seem unrelated to actionable information about oral health, but it helpfully underscores how much of accepted / “commonsense” thinking about dental care (including its neglect relative to other areas of health) is wholly arbitrary.

Other commonplaces that Dr. Hoss calls into question are things like brushing immediately after eating and using antiseptic mouthwash. It’s sort of stunning to consider how much standard advice turns out to be genuinely harmful.

Encountering evidence-based recommendations for maintaining oral health in the context of an accessibly written book (versus, say, a short newspaper piece, or a dentist office pamphlet) provides a foundation of understanding that allows genuine absorption of the lessons.

Since reading the book I’ve also found it much easier to resist sugary drinks and treats (sugary anything really), as well as alcohol (it’s hard to think of a glass of wine as an elegant indulgence once one knows what it is doing to one’s mouth).

My future self will thank me for having read this book—and I thank Dr. Hoss for writing it!

On the importance of developing early and not-so-early new oral habits

It's pretty clear Dr Kami Hoss cares about dentistry and about his patients. He, as well, can presume a very relatable and transparent style which, right at the heart of If Your Mouth Could Talk: An In-Depth Guide to Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Entire Life deep intentions, conveys a compelling message about the importance of oral health, habits, and the dangers of traditional bad practices. In the end, he knows it's critical to fix common mistakes and misconceptions very early on, through parental instruction, in order to comprehend the centrality of oral hygiene and care in the entire body's proper function.

While it feels like an introduction for the layman, the book makes enough references to the academic and scientific literature, taking the time to explain a basic glossary in order to get his readers to common ground. That well-thought and very well-intended measure explain the broad but precise scope in which Dr Hoss tries to present himself as a divulgator.

Epigenetics, microbiome, orthodontist urgencies and importance, better dental products, environmental influence on bad teeth and oral health, regular dental checks, dieting, exercising, oral conditions and treatments, a cultural history of the author's discipline, a critique of questionable standard advice, and even behavioural tips. By reading this book, the reader will find a conjunction of all these topics, in a nutshell, and extraordinarily well presented. It's, for sure, easy to recommend. More than a book, this is an instrument, an artefact, a sharp tool for educators, parents, and children.

The health advice was great, but the financial arguments were out of touch & even self-defeating the health advice at times.

It's good for discussing the medical parts of dental health, and I'd like to read this book again when I'm trying to figure out my hygiene & self-care routines.

Seriously, the discussions about how the oral health aggravates other parts of the body, the discussion of the mouth as an ecosystem, and the discussion of how teeth alignment affects breathing, and how you can get someone else sick if you have an infection in your mouth were all helpful.

---

The bad news is that the economics & economic figures of this book are kind of fucked & conservative. Like the ROI's are a case of correlation not causation. It doesn't challenge classism even though the positionality within racial capitalist patriarchy is the gist.

Further one of the examples made the target audience for these economic figures clear: some procedure is $7k. The ROI due to employers discriminating on the basis of teeth is a net of $243k. -- most USAmericans don't have $400. Further, a more subtle hint of the book being directed at affluent parents is saying that better teeth was a better predictor of getting hired than what school you went to. Again the cause is classism policing both the teeth & the schools, but the implication is there's an expectation your kid would've gone to one of those elite schools & then also have gotten better dental care (in childhood) after reading this book.

So basically this tension of refusing to challenge classism, of talking about how systemic neglect of oral health hurts society, and then basically asking parents to use willpower to get the cash flow to pay for it... We need like health communism instead of willpower, people usually start out with teeth but not everyone starts out with money. The financial advice when focused on avoiding getting discriminated on the basis of teeth was embracing going into a burning house, but refusing to put out the flames.

Dr. Kami Hoss's "If Your Mouth Could Talk" is a groundbreaking exploration into the often overlooked yet vital link between oral health and overall well-being. In this insightful book, Dr. Hoss draws on over two decades of expertise as an orthodontist and dentofacial orthopedist to illuminate the profound impact of oral health on every aspect of our lives.

The book challenges the conventional wisdom that focuses solely on diet and exercise for longevity, introducing a compelling third element: the critical role of oral health in extending lifespan by a significant 10 to 15 years. Dr. Hoss skillfully demonstrates how the mouth serves as a gateway to the body, affecting everything from childhood development to aging gracefully.

What sets this book apart is its emphasis on the comprehensive mouth-body connection. It delves far beyond traditional dental care advice, delving into areas such as safeguarding the mouth's microbiome, the intricate relationship between oral structure and sleep quality, dietary effects, and the nuances of breathing patterns—all pivotal elements influencing our physical and mental wellness.

Dr. Hoss's writing is engaging and accessible, making complex scientific concepts easily understandable for readers eager to take charge of their health. "If Your Mouth Could Talk" is a valuable resource for those seeking to grasp the intricate ties between oral health and overall vitality. It's a roadmap for individuals keen on understanding how their oral health impacts every facet of their lives, offering actionable steps to improve their well-being.

This book fills a crucial void in mainstream medical literature by spotlighting the significance of oral health in the broader context of holistic wellness. Dr. Hoss's insights prompt readers to listen to their mouths as a barometer for their entire well-being, advocating for a proactive approach to oral care that transcends mere brushing and flossing routines.

Dr. Kami Hoss' book, If Your Mouth Could Talk An-In Depth Guide to Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Entire Life is a guide to help contribute in giving its readers a lifetime of happy and healthy smiles.
Hoss covers assistance on obtaining good oral health that goes beyond brushing and flossing teeth.

Many of the chapters suggest that Readers look at the whole picture of their health including genetics, upbringing, and physical health that can help and harm how their mouths are treated.
Epigenetics is the study of traits that are inherited through the DNA. Hoss suggests that these traits could affect someone's health including their oral health. For example, Hoss cites studies where people who were obese when they were young end up later with children and grandchildren who could develop shorter and potentially unhealthy lives.

Even different stages throughout a person's life could result in poor dental health. If a mother is pregnant for example, she should not miss a trip to a dentist or orthodontist. Poor oral health could result in conditions like gestational diabete and preeclampsia as well blockage of airways. These could then lead to ill health for the baby.
She also cites various childhood illnesses like tongue-tie which could lead to bigger health problems later.

This book is especially geared towards parents to encourage their children to practice good health habits such as dieting, exercising, regular dental and medical health check ups, and obtaining a regular sleep schedule. Of course the parents themselves should practice these habits as well to pass those genetic markers and provide a good example so their children can learn by doing.

We communicate with our mouths and that’s how we get a message across. The book talks about how the mouth communicates about the state of the body. It was eye-opening and I believe it provides such important information for anyone. It truly shows the impact of your mouth on other parts of the body and the importance of looking after your mouth. I did not realize how something as small as your mouth has such a massive impact on the whole body. Many people do not know how important it is to see a dentist earlier in life instead of leaving it to the last moment. We tend to see doctors for other common ailments, however, we need to make the dentist a priority for the whole family. Although there were some scientific terms in the book, it was easy to understand the message as most of the details are explained very clearly. I was surprised how the mouth affects your life physically, mentally, emotionally, and even financially. It’s shocking that many diseases can be avoided if any problems are identified in your mouth. The collaboration of dentists and doctors is important. Through the research stated in the book I have adjusted my habits and will be very particular with other family members as well.

If Your Mouth Could Talk by Dr. Kami Hoss is a nonfiction book all about the importance of the structures in and around your mouth.

Hoss covers a wide variety of topics, including the importance of good oral care during pregnancy and early childhood, the way your smile affects your life, how sleep affects your oral and overall health, and what diseases are associated with bad oral care.

Aside from helpful tips about how to take care of your teeth and gums, the author includes a list of good and bad oral care product ingredients and tips about when you should see dentists and orthodontists.

I found If Your Mouth Could Talk extremely helpful and interesting. Who knew that so many diseases can be caused or exacerbated by problems related to the teeth? Something as simple as preventative care can really make a difference in a person’s life.

Aside from being informative, the book is also well-written and easy to understand. Even if you’ve never studied biology, you’ll learn about topics like DNA and epigenetics, which are explained clearly. I have already recommended the book to several other people and will continue to do so.

a decent read. i read most of it but skimmed thru the non applicable (children/pregnancy) related sections. if i had know it’d talk about parental roles so heavily, i likely wouldn’t have picked it up. i have no plans of becoming a parent. but it was still interesting to learn how my parents dental habits and lifestyle could’ve greatly impacted me in mind boggling ways

i don’t recommend reading it if ur an anxious person. i was familiar with a lot of the stuff already due to a dentistry/oral health hyper-fixation i’ve been floating through, but i also learned a ton of new stuff. specifically about the oral microbiome, epigenetic factors, the link between oral and systemic health, sleeping stages/habits, etc. it is a little dramatic at times, and apparently the author has his own oral care line. he didnt self plug, which is great, but he did mention the use of a mouth spray, during the recommended oral products section, that i discovered he sells. it actually looks like a decent product. regardless, i lowkey wish i hadnt read this. im already stressed, and this mightve added to it. the less i know the better, i guess (i need to cope)

As someone who has struggled with many orthodontic and jaw/facial issues, I can confirm that this book is of the utmost importance. Not only is this book full of helpful information that will facilitate readers to better their own lives, but it is also written in a way that is so accessible that you can't help but take in the information.

The book is broken down into sections that allow readers to access the information they need--though reading the book in a linear way is important, you don't necessarily need to. The author, Kami Hoss, has given a book that is as informative as it is passionate and that alone makes this book a phenomenal read. Any reader will be able to take away such important information and lessons that will help transform their lives for the better, forever.

I highly recommend this book to all readers who are looking to learn more about their own bodies, how to better their own lives, and how to live a longer, happier, healthier life.

This book is not about how many times a day you need to brush your teeth or how much flossing you need to be doing. This book talks about how your oral health, aka your mouth, can affect your whole life. The narrative is not only about how having oral health can help expand human life expectancy but can also prevent people from having chronic and systemic diseases like: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer's, among others.

The book was absolutely educational and highly instructional regarding what it means to have a healthy mouth and how that affects throughout your entire life. A thoroughly narrated story with statistics, experience and true stories about oral health and how we can achieve it. I really enjoyed reading this book, I highly recommend it to EVERYONE! Every single one of us should know this information, so we can be healthier and happier!

Let's talk about health.

The first thing that I think when I see this book is "how many forgotten truths!". I'm close to becoming a doctor and I know the implication of oral health in all other aspects of health. Nevertheless, it is something that we often forget or overlook.
Kami Hoss is a renowned orthodontist and dentofacial orthopaedist, who talks about oral health in his book named If Your Mouth Could Talk: An In-Depth Guide to Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Entire Life. It has much more insightful advice than any standard advice you can get from your dentist; it has important information about the mouth's microbiome, the effect of diet, how to breathe better, and many more tips.
I think everyone should read this book, it could really teach us how to change our life, make it better and healthier.

Let me admit that this book has really taught me a lot I didn’t know about oral health. Kami Hoss plainly explains how important it is to take care of your mouth. He points out that having good oral health leads to a healthy body. It will also impact your sleep, longevity, mental health, behavior, prosperity and happiness. Taking good care of your mouth does not only entail brushing your teeth and flossing. It also involves eating healthy, exercising, have enough sleep, avoiding smoking, reducing stress and many more. I have learned the importance of teaching children about oral health at an early age. In addition, going to the dentist should be a norm and not something to be scared about. I concur with what Kami Hoss says, that dentists and physicians should work together in order to improve oral care.

If Your Mouth Could Talk by Kami Hoss is an eye-opening brilliant health guide. Dr. Hoss is a renowned orthodontist and dentofacial orthopedist and from that experience he details how the missing piece of overall health is directly connected with our mouths. This guide emphasis about the importance of protecting mouth's microbiome. The effects of our diets, how to sleep better and breath effectively are also explained. This is not just a guide but a much-needed help to take control of health, improve quality of life in the long run. I am glad to have found this guide, it is simple to understand and contains wealth of information. It's critical for us to start learning about the relationship of the mouth to the overall health so we can teach our kids too. For a better and improved physical and mental wellness, I highly recommend this guide.

If Your Mouth Could Talk is an amazingly informative book that really shocked me. I’ve always known about the importance of brushing, and as a parent, I knew it was important to get my son brushing at a young age, which I did, and I’m even happier I put in the extra work after reading. I also heard a lot of stories about the dangers of sucking your thumb or allowing your child to use a pacifier for too long, but I figured it was mostly nonsense. Now I realize how wrong I was and will share what I learned and recommend this book to anyone I meet raising a child. There are also a lot of important things that adults should know about to help keep them healthy and extend their lifespan.

Overall, a fantastic effort by the author that is now on my list of books everyone should own.

Very insightful!

Upon reading this book, it opened my eyes on how important oral health care is. First and foremost, I am really scared of dentists, and after reading this book, I still am. However, this book helped me realize that my fear of dentists means so little compared to the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth. I didn't know an unhealthy mouth can cause infertility, and I wanted to have kids. It also explained how dozens of diseases are connected to the mouth, from Alzheimer’s to cancer. I would say it kind of scared me enough for me to book an appointment to see the dentist, but in a good way. It is a very helpful, convincing and insightful resource. I recommend people to read.

Dr. Kami Hoss’s If Your Mouth Could Talk: An In-Depth Guide to Oral Health and Its Impact on Your Entire Life, is a great read showing that there’s a lot more to dental health than just brushing and flossing.
From Alzheimer’s, educational delays, and even asthma, Hoss explains the immense sway good dental hygiene has over one’s health and well-being.
I was really surprised to learn just how very important all aspects of mouth health are, and how important it is to have as early an intervention as possible.
I feel like this is a great book for everyone to read in order to have a better understanding of their health, and also for parents to ensure they can give the best habits possible to their children.

This will be useful for medicine related workers but also for general readers, as it is written clearly and with a completely understandable narrative. Highly recommended for all.

Oral hygiene is undeniably the most crucial aspect of hygiene. I had been looking for ways how I could improve my oral hygiene and make it better. Thankfully, I found this book, and nothing has been the same since then. The book gives a detailed guide on how neglecting oral hygiene can be a gateway to innumerable diseases. Not only that, but I also learned how oral hygiene is related to the health of the entire body. It proved to be an eye opener and I was shocked to realize how I was misinformed about so many things. Everyone who is concerned about their oral hygiene and wishes to improve it should definitely own a copy and give this a read.
