Symptomatic of a relationship gone sour: Heartburn/Nausea is a new book from artist/designer Julia Fox that details just how high the ‘highs’ can be and just how low the ‘lows’ can be. Launched at the recent New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1, the book chronicles three relationships that have had a significant impact on Fox’s life (more details below). Two of a romantic nature and one based on a friendship she had with a woman named Samantha. “I just wanted to take something bad and make it good. For myself – but also for anyone else that has been in a fucked up situation and then has to carry that weight around forever after. It's mainly about heartbreak and abusive, dysfunctional, codependent relationships”.
marking as read, found some of it on the internet but not the whole thing and i will probably never be able to finish it bc its selling for 2000+ rn 😵💫😵💫😵💫
I feel like I commuted a crime by reading this with the number of (technical) crimes photographed within it. Also, is this even really a book? Yes I’ve ‘read’ it like 7 times since July but like what even is a book, when you think about it?
PTSD and Down the Drain were 5 stars. The only reason why I am rating this one 4 is because reading this actually caused me discomfort. Though Julia's other two books are also graphic and can be upsetting, the themes of abuse and dysfunction in relationships were very present in this book.
It is an absolute honour to read her books and appreciate her art. I rate the book itself a 5/5 for the way it made me feel such strong emotion and the rawness of the piece.
It is really important to be mindful and remember that Julia is a human being and that being a "celebrity" does not mean that she owes her fans anything. She deserves privacy and the utmost respect for her personal life. Julia Fox is a beautiful human being and a real artist.
Original copies are selling for over 3 grand and I could only source about a quarter of this book but rating off of the glimpse I did manage to snag and for its compliment to Down the Drain.
If anyone ever wants to let me borrow their copy, or send me a link to where I can read, it would be greatly appreciated 🥹🫶🏼 totally would pay hehe help
