She should be reconciling herself to spinsterhood, not falling for the baronet next door?
Miss Elaine Brooke has always spent more time daydreaming than actually living. With no fortune and no suitors, she is back from school and determined to face the reality of a quiet, lonely life. But an encounter with Daniel Ashburn, her childhood best friend and lifelong infatuation, sets her dreaming again. Soon she is imagining a very different life as Mrs. Ashburn.
Sir Phillip Ashburn has an estate to manage and a troublesome brother to marry off. He won't let a penniless neighbor ruin everything by turning Daniel's head. Intent on keeping Miss Brooke away from his brother, Phillip sets out to monopolize her time. Despite their disagreements, Phillip soon begins to wonder if she is more than a problem to be solved. As Phillip starts to question all his assumptions, Elaine realizes he isn't quite what she imagined. Could she possibly have set her heart on the wrong Ashburn?
Jane Austen meets Sabrina in this Regency Romance.
What a fun regency retelling of Sabrina! I was hooked within the first few chapters and could not put the book down.
Elaine has long imagined herself in love with the younger Ashburn brother, Daniel and is delighted to spend time with him at a house party after she returns home after years away at school. But Daniel's older brother Philip is determined to keep them from spending time together and his method? Spending time with Elaine himself.
As Elaine and Daniel's feeling and perceptions of each other shift and they realize their dreams have changed, there is soooo much slow burn tension. Seriously. You know the chemistry is fantastic when glances across the room and fingers touching give you stomach flutters!
The writing and story line was so crisp I have a hard time believing this is a debut author and you can tell the research was thorough - I honestly felt like I was watching a movie because the scenes and characters were so vivid.
Highly recommend for any fan of regency romance!
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.
Elaine returns home and reconnects with her childhood best friend Daniel, whom she has fantasized about for years. But is the man he became the man for her?
Daniel’s older brother Philip is on his case to marry a rich heiress and settle down. Philip at first seems stern and judgmental, and we slowly get to know his true character.
Most of the story takes place at a country house party, which is one of my favourite settings for regency romance. I loved the slow burn relationship between Elaine and Philip, and the friendship that develops between Elaine and Freddie.
Read it if you’re looking for a low-angst, soft historical romance.
* disclosure: the author and I are friends IRL! Holli you rock! *
Going into this book I was completely biased and unsure how a regency could live up to one of my all-time favorite movies, Sabrina. It’s such a classic story and both versions of the movie are great in their own ways, so how did a book, set in a completely different time and country, stand up against two of the best movies in the history of movies? It not only can stand proudly next two both versions of the movie, but it is wonderful enough to stand on its own and be a great addition to the regency romance genre. The Imagined Attachment surpassed all my expectations and is truly one of the best books of 2022. Hands down this book is now one of my all time favorite books and it was a *beautiful* retelling of the classic movie(s). All I can really say is: Wow! Holli Jo Monroe turned a favorite Hollywood movie into a classic and beautiful piece of literature that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. Her writing transports you to her different settings, and you can clearly picture Ryder Hall, the Old Priory, and every place in between. And the dual POV with Elaine and Phillip just enriches the story because you can see both sides to the good and bad that happens on the pages of this story. (Side note: what is it about regency books and the fact that heroes that are named Phillip always end up being my favorite book boyfriends?? Seriously though….it’s kind of weird how many “Philip/Phillips I adore.) Both Philip and Elaine have their own weaknesses, and it was an absolute pleasure to follow their stories and how they overcome them separately and together. The struggle, the tension, the slow burn romance, and yes, even the misunderstandings all combine to make a love story that will make you swoon and daydream as much as Elaine. Need a fun new romance? Read The Imagined Attachment. Wanting a different take on regency romance? Read The Imagined Attachment. Looking for a lighthearted enjoyable book? Read The Imagined Attachment. Like reading and just want to enhance your reading experience/make your life better than it already is? Read The Imagined Attachment. And what a way to debut as a new author! I am gladly, impatiently, and excitedly looking forward to any and all books by Holli Jo Monroe. Keep your eye out for her books in the future, I’m sure they’ll be as amazing as the first in her long and successful career as an author I will praise this book all day every day because anyone who enjoys regency romance absolutely *needs* to read this book. It’s perfect for any reader who loves to read, it’s that simple and that good of a book.
I watched Sabrina for the first time a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. So imagine my excitement of a book influenced by Sabrina.
My expectation may have been a smidge too high because while I did enjoy this, it didn't leave me with the same warm and fuzzies that Sabrina did.
This has the same bones as Sabrina with a carefree, reckless younger brother and an older brother that's trying to mitigate the disasters he causes, who finds himself falling for the woman who was catching his brother's eye. My memory of the movie Sabrina, is that Sabrina grows into herself and finds her confidence. This confidence allows her to hold her own against said older brother and disrupt his status quo. While she did this, she was still charming and never overbearing. And the older brother while starting off as quite a stick in the mud was never unlikable, and even the younger brother was charismatic.
None of these characterizations were present (for me) in The Imagined Attachment. I suppose my main gripe with this and the reason for the 3 stars is I didn't find any of the main characters particularly likable. I didn't hate them, but I didn't feel charmed by them or overly invested in their story. This actually reminded me more of Pride and Prejudice tonally than Sabrina. I wonder if I would have rated this higher if the Sabrina comparison was never made.
Elaine has always carried a flame for younger brother Daniel. Upon her return home she sets her cap for him despite every single person around her warning her off his delinquent character. This brings her into the crosshairs of older brother Philip who tries to play referee between the two. I didn't connect with Elaine at all. At best, she was fine, but I was mostly frustrated with her strong willed stubbornness and frequent hypocrisy. She wasn't someone I was actively rooting for. Philip was a little better, and I thought Monroe did an admirable job of laying a great foundation of why there was so much friction between the brothers. I thought he had the most character growth in this novel, and that probably added to my frustrations slightly because I wish we had seen similar growth with Elaine and Daniel's characters. With Daniel, we were frequently told he was charming but this didn't exactly leap off the page, and he ends the story in the same place he started. Yes he starts taking his life more seriously but we never get any closure with his actual characterisation, just abrupt changes in actions (but not behaviour) and at the very end of the book no less.
Finally, the relationship with Philip and Elaine was too heavily reliant on miscommunications and misunderstandings. Where it was understandable at the start of their relationship, it was still the driving plot device at the end of the book which was not my cup of tea.
I did like the writing so I may be back for the rest of the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read this in a day and half and when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about the characters and wondering how the story would continue to develop. I stayed up until 3 AM to finish it. That’s probably the highest praise I can give a book considering my children are usually up at 7 AM and now more than ever I can’t go without sleep even for a good book. I just had to finish this and see how it ended. I wasn’t disappointed.
It ticked all the boxes: it’s a Regency romance, set in England, it’s historical fiction, it has great character development… It’s the perfect mix of Jane Austen and Sabrina. The historical side did not let me down, as I could see all the research and knowledge of the the time period and location as I read the book.
I loved the characters and I loved the progression of the romance, it felt natural and satisfying. I loved the Philip and Elaine and their backstories plus all the situations that threw them together and I even like the confusion about who liked who. Plus I loved the accidental meetings, and just couldn’t get enough of seeing the romance blossoming.
I would totally recommend this to others, it’s a great book club book, and one that has already made it onto my read again list.
Second reading thoughts: This time around I realized how much I enjoyed the similarities to Sabrina (both versions of the movie are favorites of mine) but what made it even better than Sabrina was the backstory of childhood friendship between Elaine and Daniel. This helped explain her infatuation with him. Then it was nice to see her make sense of her feelings of him see them for what they were and what they weren’t. It was a gradual and natural shifting and made for a seamless story.
"Don't look at me like that. Aren't secret engagements fashionable now?"
The Imagined Attachment by Holli Jo Monroe was absolutely delightful from start to finish. This was a book I stayed up way too late reading (much to my husband’s dismay). Do I regret it? No. Will you, when you do it too? Also no. :)
The Imagined Attachment is a Regency era version of the movie Sabrina. I haven’t seen that movie, but after reading this, I feel like I need to.
Sir Phillip was the perfect blend of sweet and brooding. I loved seeing him grow and develop and become the kind of person who deserved to be with Elaine. Watching him fight his feelings while trying to do the right thing was both charming and entertaining. The longer I read, the more I found myself feeling like I knew Phillip. He felt so real and genuine. He is dedicated and reliable, but he is far, far from being perfect—I loved him as the leading man.
Elaine. Oh, sweet Elaine. I loved her from the first moment we met her. Her enthusiasm for life and love was engaging and so incredibly relatable. She wants to believe the best of everyone and has an optimistic outlook on life. I enjoyed seeing her learn and grow and overcome her biases. These two had such fun chemistry and a natural love story. Rather than an insta-love, they grew into their love, which felt so right for these two. I loved them together.
All in all, a delightful read from Holli Jo. I cannot wait to get the other stories in this series. I know that Holli Jo will absolutely be on my auto buy list.
I received a free advanced reader copy from the author; no positive review was required. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Reread:just finished rereading this story via audiobook and it was so well done! I do recommend speeding it up a little though. But they have both male and female narrators and I love the way it was done! And the story is great!
Original Review: If you love the movie Sabrina, and regency, this is the book for you! Elaine has been in love with Daniel ever since childhood. She has been gone for awhile but has returned a grown woman. Daniel is a flirt and doesn’t recognize Elaine so he flirts with her much to her delight. However, Phillip, Daniels older brother, interferes because he has other plans for Daniel. While trying to keep Elaine and Daniel apart, Phillip spends time with Elaine. Although Phillip and Elaine’s relationship started out on the wrong foot it changes as they spend more time together.
Loved this story! I love the movie Sabrina and I also love regency stories so when I saw this book was about that, I was very excited to read it. I loved all of the characters Phillip, Elaine, Daniel, and Miss Talbot. Very enjoyable story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a Sabrina-inspired regency romance. Since I'm not a huge fan of Sabrina, I wasn't sure what to expect from this. . I love the way this author writes. Everything flows so well, and she brings in really interesting side stories, a tale from Camelot in this case. . I struggled to love the main characters as much as I wanted to by the end. I never quite got the appeal of Sir Phillip, and if you don't find the hero of a regency romance charming, then what's the point?!
I have to admit that I’m not typically a romance reader or watcher, so I probably had a bit of a bias against the concept of this book before even opening it. In spite of that, within minutes of starting the first chapter I actually began to fall in love with Sir Philip. I picked my advanced copy up in the morning and ended up changing my day’s plans so I would not have to put it down, I kid you not. Its one of those stories that draws you into the characters and plot so fully that you feel like you’ll miss out on something if you walk away for even just a few minutes!
What I appreciated most about the author’s writing style is that she sets scenes with such detail, it feels as though you’re standing in the presence of the characters. I’m an avid and picky reader and this is truly a rare happening for me. She has the ability to place you at the formal dinner table as the party guests consider and conspire, or along the forest lane on a misty morning with Elaine as she wonders and wanders. One of my favorite scenes is during a group game of charades when the “antagonists” are uncomfortably paired as a team…the tension between the inner monologues and outer dialogues is so genuine that my heart truly ached for the two of them and their awkward misunderstandings.
I’ve started following Holli Jo Monroe on social media where she shares how she’s researched the time period, and I’m blown away at how deeply she’s delved into details that seem to be so naturally built into the story. To say that she knows her stuff about this era is an understatement. As a history geek I so enjoyed discovering the daily life issues and challenges of a young Regency woman eager to stand up for her sense of self-worth. I cannot imagine that it’s easy to write a female character who is filled with both romantic dreams of marriage and a strong streak of independence. Yet in Elaine I met a well-struck balance between these often clashing desires.
So, even though I’m traditionally not the kind of reader to be drawn to a romantic period drama, I really and truly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it and I’m eager to take on the next stories in the series.

Elaine has always been in love with her childhood best friend and neighbor, Daniel. When a house party brings them together after 11 years, penniless Elaine feels like her dreams may finally come true. But when she finds herself constantly in the company of Daniel’s broody older brother, Sir Phillip, Elaine realizes that dreams can change and so can the heart.
This was such a fantastic debut by Hollie Jo Monroe. Her writing is so thoughtful and immersive; I truly felt like I was a part of this story. The scenes at the priory ruins were some of my favorite!
There is so much pining and I felt my heart aching for Elaine as well as for a certain Sir as this story unfolds. It made for a delicious slow burn and tons of angst. Sir Phillips’s grumpy seriousness was the perfect antidote to Elaine’s day dreaming playfulness. They balanced each other beautifully and truly brought out the best in each other. Their opposite personalities created the best banter and dialogue.
Elaine’s friendships with Daniel and Freddie were also a highlight of the story for me. While there was plenty of drama, I’m so happy with the way things turned out between these three characters. The tidbits thrown in about Elaine’s schoolmates raised so many questions for me and I’m really looking forward to their individual stories. Hollie Jo Monroe is truly an author to look out for in regency romance.

Just have to say that I absolutely LOVED this book. I had the incredible opportunity to be on the Advanced Readers team and I can say that it was an absolutely amazing experience.
I will say that there were a couple love/hate moments for sure. Hate: I had to finish it. 😂 I don't know about anyone else, but the endings are the worst! I love to just drag my feet finishing. Then I reread it 😂. Biggest love: the author, Holli, is amazing! She is so kind and her emails were very informative.
Now for the review. (I won't go into too much detail, so everything is a surprise. I'll also try to keep this short!) I loved the book. Truly, it was my kind of book. It was heartbreaking to see the one-sided feelings, but I like the way it all worked out! The storyline and idea for the book was really good and she wrote it perfectly. I cannot stress how much I loved this book. I have reread many parts of it already and will likely reread the book because I loved it so much. Read this book! And reach out to the Author with comments! She is fantastic.
*I did receive a free eARC copy of this book. All opinions, words, and thoughts are my own. 🙃
I'm so sorry this was really boring. I didn't even hate it I just was completely forcing myself through something I knew I wasn't really enjoying which was my bad. I would have dnfed it but it was short enough I kept going. It was fine but there was no spice. The characters: flat. The plot: uninteresting. The dialogue: stilted. It was bearable enough to read but I'm so sorry there was just nothing to this story. The ending for the confession even read as though it was from Pride & Prejudice (2005). It was not giving. 1.5 ⭐
This book is absolutely wonderful! I never wanted to put it down. Extremely well written and very engaging characters. Such great descriptions of the locations, its as if you were actually there. If you love regency historical romance you will not want to miss out on this book. Highly recommend!! Excited for the next book in the series. Ms Monroe you wrote a fantastic book. Clean romance just the way I like it!
A pleasant read with likeable main couple but am doomed to forget this book also as soon as I finished it. Has a cute premise in that Elaine, poor neighbour to a rich estate, has been in love with Daniel, charming and charismatic younger son of said estate, ever since she was a girl. So at 22, she is still infatuated with her idea of him despite adult Daniel now being understandably different from those childhood memories. Not having his brother marry a poor nobody, Sir Phillip the serious elder brother sees the warning bells and seeks to detach any possible attachment between the two. He then wholeheartedly third-wheels himself and commandeers Elaine’s company at every opportune moment to distract her away from Daniel.
It is of course this setup that necessitates Elaine being annoyingly infatuated with Daniel for most of the book, to the detriment of all other character traits. She’s 22 but feels 16 she’s so nauseatingly gaga for him. Of course as the story goes on she begins to move beyond being so airy fairy but it’s a trudge to get to that point I’ll admit.
It is no major plot spoiler that Sir Phillip is clearly the superior brother and the one she ends up falling in love with. He is worthy hero whose gradual softening of his unyielding and stiff exterior to showing his real traits was satisfying to read. Is he a deliciously swoonworthy hero? Hmm not quite, but likeable none the less.
As this is a house party type plot, expect no major plot dramas or even fleshed-out side characters (all of whom are a bit under-baked, a casualty of achieving maximum H and h interaction above all things). It would have been nice to have been able to feel anything about Daniel and Freddie’s happy ending too, but you feel nothing for them as you hardly know them.
It’s no classic and will ultimately leave no imprint on my mind but I enjoyed my time reading it and The Imagined Attachment shows Hollie Jo Monroe as a competent new writer of the genre, one I’ll keep an eye on in future.
Rating: 3.5 childhood dreams Re-readability: not special enough to warrant rereading.
"Miss Brooke saw Phillip as a heartless, dull, officious, older brother, far from desiring his company. And as Daniel began another poem, Phillip was surprised to realize that he wished to change her mind." Brooke has been in love with Daniel Ashburn from a young age. When she returns home after school, she finds herself running into Daniel and realizing her childhood feelings are still very much the same. However, Daniel's brother, Phillip has high hopes for Daniel, including marrying an heiress and finally growing up. The more Brooke gets to know both brothers, she realizes they may be different than she originally thought. Will she realize her childhood dream of marrying Daniel, or will she find his brother to be the mate she always hoped for? This was a wonderful Regency romance that had hints of Sabrina, which is one of my favorites! I enjoyed how the author began with some of the hints of the Sabrina story and built on it within a Regency era. Brooke was a fun character to get to know and I enjoyed how honest and sometimes blunt she was with both brothers. Both Daniel and Phillip endeared themselves to me in how they navigated their challenges. I enjoyed Brooke's friendship with her rival for Daniel's affection, and the secondary characters added so much to the story. Brooke's mom ended up being one of my favorites as well! I absolutely loved how this story ended and can't wait to read more from this author! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This debut novel by Holli Jo Monroe was positively delightful! I smiled through the whole thing and now I can’t wait to read more stories from The Bath Schoolmates!
The Imagined Attachment is based around a story I absolutely love coupled with a genre I adore. This regency take on Sabrina was a win for me! I enjoyed how the author transformed the story into something fresh and original while maintaining the concept of the story that we already love. It was a really fun and enjoyable read! And the story translated so well to the regency era.
Sir Phillip was great as the broody/serious older brother. Caught up in family obligations and keeping everything running in tip top order. Daniel regales us as the charming, dependent, somewhat selfish younger brother who cant seem to settle or make up his mind. And Elaine, our fanciful, dreaming heroine. Believing she is in love with one brother but then coming to realize it’s the other one that has truly gained her affection.
The last chapter isn’t technically an epilogue but to me it read like one and I’m so happy it was included! I like a little glimpse into the future with our characters. Both couples were great and I loved seeing their happily ever afters!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves sweet, clean romance and I’m looking forward to more by this author! I’ll be adding her to my go to author list!
I received a free advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and options are my own.
The Imagined Attachment is a wonderful story with believable characters. Elaine and Sir Philip have such a great story. I would say this book is a enemies to lovers novel. Elaine believes she is in love with Sir Philip's brother until she gets to know the brothers more. The author did a fantastic job at bringing out the readers emotions. So many times I was right with the characters in feeling their frustration and despair. For a debut novel I am pleasantly surprised at this well crafted story. There were unique qualities I appreciated throughout the story. I'm excited to read more from Holli Jo Monroe.
I did receive a free advanced reader copy. This is an honest review of my thoughts.
This was a nonstop read for me. I just didn’t want to put it down! I liked the characters and the storyline was enjoyable! I felt that the relationship between Elaine and Phillip happened naturally. The plot moved well and had just the right amount of angst. It was such a cute story and now I can’t wait for the others in the series!
I received a free ARC copy but my review and opinions are entirely my own.
The Imagined Attachment’ by Holli Jo Monroe transported me to the Regency Era through the beautiful and descriptive writing. I was completely immersed in this lovely book and I couldn’t put it down!
Elaine Brooke has been in love with her neighborhood best friend Daniel Ashburn since childhood. She is such a dreamer, and has always imagined being married to him some day. She has been away at school for years, but returns and meets Daniel and Phillip his older brother again. She finds herself taken with Daniel still. He might just be taken by her too! This is a problem for Sir Phillip who is trying to marry his brother off to another. Sir Phillip comes up with a plan to keep Daniel and Miss Brooke apart, by spending more time with her. He gets to know her and is in grave danger of loosing his heart. Elaine gets to know both brothers better and her mind and heart might just change from her childhood imaginings.
Elaine is beautiful, bold, intelligent and a daydreamer. Sir Philip is a practical, handsome broody hero with a sweet spot. “When they weren’t at odds, Phillip found he quite liked Miss Brooke’s conversation.” Loved these two together!
📖I love the Sabrina movies and setting that story in the Regency era is brilliant and worked perfectly! 📖Memorable moments included the Old Priory, King Arthur, books, morning walks, a game and a dance! 📖This story had multiple tropes including best friends to lovers, best friend’s brother to lovers and enemies to lovers all woven into one! 📖You can feel the romantic tension with long stares, hand touches, sweet words and thoughts filled with eachother. I loved reading the story from dual perspectives! 📖I loved the historical aspect of this book and the cast of lovely characters made the book shine. 📖The slowly falling in love and watching the characters get to know and understand each other and their hearts was beautiful. This story ends with a sweet happily ever after.
This book was such a joy to read and my heart was full of butterflies or as the book stated I had a hummingbird in my chest! This is a wonderful Regency romance that you don’t want to miss!
Jane Austen and Sabrina? No way. It’s to good to be true. How wrong was I, This author mixed together two of my favorites things and it worked beautifully.
Some context:
Sir Philip Ashburn wants his younger, flirt of a brother, Daniel, settled and married off to a woman with money to fund Daniels lifestyle. So, the ever responsible Sir Philip decides to throw a house party and play match maker for his brother. However, his careful planning does not include the poor neighbor girl, now returned a beautiful young lady and still entirely in love with Daniel. Does Daniel feel the same? That won’t do. She’s poor, and outspoken, and lovely.. err.
Enter Miss Elaine Brooke. Elaine has been in love with Daniel since childhood. When she’s invited to join the house party, she views it as a chance to see if Daniel returns her feelings and could view her as more than his best friend. Daniel is her ideal man you see: Charming smiles, and an easy going nature. What’s not to love? Things get complicated when his imposing, much to serious older brother, Sir Philip, begins to insert himself into her life. But Sir Philip is not entirely as she remembers. Perhaps there’s more to him than his serious nature and frown.
The actual review:
I loved this. The chemistry between Elaine and Philip was slowly built over the course of the story and was believable. Both had to grow as characters to really see the other and I enjoyed watching them bloom almost as much as the story itself. The plot itself was great. Holli Jo Monroe is a talent author who managed to write a story that kept me engaged and grew on me as the story progressed. The most enjoyable part for me was the assumptions made by both Elaine and Philip (and some of the side characters to a degree) It made for some great laughs and some heart tugging moments. The title is absolute perfection. Needless to say this was for me, a five star read. I cannot wait to read what comes next for this series.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My review and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this debut novel from Holli Jo Monroe! I thought her interpretation of a Sabrina retelling was clever and unique! Elaine was infuriatingly optimistic when it came to Daniel’s character, however I appreciated the slow burn of romance between Elaine and Sir Phillip. This story kept me turning the pages and the characters were unique yet likable which made this story a refreshingly different Regency novel. I am definitely adding this author to my Regency romance list for future books!
Sabrina? But make it regency? YES PLEASE. I loved this sweet and charming story about a lovable heroine and two very different brothers. I’ve always been a sucker for a brooding hero and this was no exception. The author has such a beautiful grasp for the language and the history and it perfectly adds a depth and authentic feel to the story. Can’t wait for the other books in the series!!
Confession ... I actually know the author of this book, Holli Jo. She lived near us for one of her duty stations when she was in the army. For that reason, I was weirdly hesitant to start reading. What if I didn't end up liking the story? What if I noticed a bunch of mistakes? While I can be pretty candid about such things when I write reviews for random books I read, I didn't want to be brutally honest if it was a story written by someone I actually know. Well ...
I didn't need to worry at all. I LOVED THIS! Truly. I did. No exaggeration here. I really did love the story and the characters. I ended up staying up too late last night as I finished it because I NEEDED to get to the HEA ending. What did I love? The two main characters of this story, Miss Brooke and Sir Phillip are delightful. Elaine Brooke is basically penniless, but she has grown up in the shadow of Sir Phillip's estate. As a child she formed a friendship with Phillip's brother, Daniel. One day she was going to marry that boy. Now, after a stint at school in Bath, Elaine is back, and she finds herself thrown in the path of Daniel, now a handsome, but somewhat aimless, adult. Elaine is still crushing on him. Is he crushing on her? Well, Phillip cannot let this flirtation continue. Daniel needs to marry well, and he's already got a prospect who fits the bill. To keep Daniel and Elaine from acting on their attraction to one another, Phillip throws himself in Elaine's path in order to separate them. He didn't anticipate finding Elaine to be so intriguing as a conversationalist and companion. He can't stop thinking of her. One thing leads to another, and soon both of them find themselves in love. But neither one really trusts their own feelings or the feelings of the other, so complications arise.
The story itself isn't all that unique, but the execution of the writing was so lovely that I found myself totally immersed in the atmosphere of this world. I kept thinking about favorite regency stories that I was reminded of as I read. This is definitely an homage to the fun and beauty of period romances.
As I was racing through the end of the story I couldn't help but be annoyed with Phillip and his inability to TALK to Elaine. He just assumes right and left, eventually assuming Elaine all the way out of his life and the countryside. Grr. But it's probably in line with the repressive communications of the day, in some way, so I forgave him. There were some scenes and moments at the end of the story that I might have wished to have been plotted a little differently, but that really just boils down to my own personal preference. The actual story worked just as written.
I enjoyed these characters and this story a lot. I wanted to spend a little more time with them. I really enjoyed this. If you are looking for a sweet, clean, and engaging regency romance that relies on the stories and characters to drive the story, I highly recommend this. Five stars!
The Imagined attachment was a Proper Romance and I loved it! Elaine Brooke has graduated from a Ladies Seminary in Bath and returned home to live with her mother in a lodge on The Ashburn Estate. Elaine and Daniel Ashburn were best buddies growing up and she decided at a very young age that she would marry him. Daniel has grown into a very charming, heart-stealing rascal, to the dismay of his older brother, Phillip. Where Daniel is carefree and spends his brother's money freely, Phillip is serious, burdened, and lacking in humor. Phillip wants Daniel to marry the beautiful heiress, Miss Talbot. He hopes that a wife will change his brother's lack of direction and also curb his carefree ways. They were the talk of London during the Season but Daniel never proposed, so Phillip invites the Talbots and others to a house party in hopes this will give his brother more time with the beautiful heiress. Elaine meets Daniel again on his first day home and he does not recognize her. He supposes she is one of the guests at his house party. Phillip hunts him down and sees that Daniel is flirting and charming Miss Elaine Brooke. He is very displeased that Daniel is jeopardizing his opportunity to marry the heiress by his marked attentions to Elaine. When he curtly greets Elaine, Daniel cannot believe his childhood friend has grown into such a lovely woman. Elaine does not care for stuffy Phillip and his lecturing attitude. The Dowager Baroness, Lady Ashburn, has a cancellation to her party and is lacking the proper number of people at her table so she invites Mrs. Brooke and Elaine Brooke to attend her party. During the Party Elaine recognizes that Daniel and Miss Talbot have feelings for each other and wonders why he flirts with her. Phillip tries to head-off disaster by spending time with Elaine thereby forcing Daniel to spend time with Miss Talbot. The More time Phillip spends with Elaine the more he likes her and her opinion of him begins to change and she sees both sides of the conflict between the brothers. I am not going to give away the ending but it was both devastating and lovely. I gave this book 5 stars because it was interesting, satisfying, and filled with hope.
"Miss Brooke saw Phillip as a heartless, dull, officious, older brother, far from desiring his company. And as Daniel began another poem, Phillip was surprised to realize that he wished to change her mind."
This is a refreshing, clean regency romance populated with delightful characters falling in love in believable ways. [Also, any book that manages to throw in some Pride and Prejudice Easter eggs gets a 5 star from me!] I was especially charmed by our Hero, Sir Phillip Ashburn, who, overwhelmed when he inherited the baronetcy at 19, by 29 has allowed his duties to define him; leaving him serious and cool. He feels one of his major duties is to convince his profligate younger brother, the charming, inconstant, flirtatious Daniel, to get either a profession or a wealthy wife -preferably the good-natured attractive and wealthy Miss Talbot! - and off his estate expenses! Daniel, needless to say, is less than pleased with his brother’s interference and in his pique refuses to do either.
Our heroine, an impoverished neighbor on the Ashburn estate who has just returned from her years of schooling in bath, is the intelligent, educated, easily distracted and destitute Elaine Brooke; a loyal friend, a voracious reader, and very much in love with the memories of her childhood friend Daniel. However, over a 2 week house party at the Ashburn estate she re-acquaints herself with the adult characters of both Daniel and Sir Phillips and is somewhat shocked to realize Daniel fails to live up to her memory while Sir Phillip may fulfil her dreams. No insta love here – they grow into their affection.
I have been obsessively re-reading this for several days! The character arc of Sir Phillip as he surrenders to his emotions, admits Elaine makes him a better person and sets out to woo her just makes my heart go squeeeeee! With little experience in flirting, (or judging a woman’s response!) he doubts his abilities, compares himself unfavorably to his younger brother, and struggles to do what it right. Such a solid, believable character! I adore him!
A Juliette Stevenson (from about 2007) narration of this would be to DIE FOR!
I received a free ARC copy of this and I can honestly say I LOVED this book!
A mix between Pride and Prejudice meets a Regency version of 1995 Sabrina. Seriously you need to read this.
It is clear that Holli Jo did immense research about the time period. The language/vocabulary is incredible. The attention to detail in each scene is amazing! And the amount of work she put into this book is clear and very appreciated!
I enjoyed watching the growth of each character as they learned, challenged their emotions, and opened their eyes to different perspectives.
At times I was heartbroken, other times I found myself laughing, and overall I fell in love with the whole story.
Here’s one part of literally dozensssss that I loved and highlighted.
‘“My brother treats everything as a jest and does not think before he speaks.” Instead of being soothed, Miss Brooke seemed offended. “That is unjust. Your brother has an easy character and speaks his mind. It is not his fault that I found the content of his speech to be upsetting.” “Yes his implication that you have unladylike interests is entirely your fault.” “He did not mean to offend. He only pointed out that talking about farming is not a normal topic of conversation and he is right.” Phillip could not believe his ears. “Are you determined to always find good in him?” “Are you determined to always find fault?” Their eyes locked and he found nothing to admire in the challenging spark of her gaze.’
