I can tell that this story about a prodigy hitman who has to take a year off because he's killed too many people is meant to be funny, but it just isn't tickling my funny bone.

A hitman who isn't allowed to kill.
I wonder how the author will pull that off for 200+ chapters.
Interesting premise. Not funny like it was marketed though.
Black comedy? A little, yes. But that's all.

pretty solid, premise is a Hitman and his female handler. have to lay low in Osaka for a year and just be a normal person. The first volume is all set up with some plot teasers of what’s to come especially with a female neighbor that’s probably going to be a romantic love interest with our main lead and conflicts with the local yakuza group that don’t trust having a hitman in their waters. The art was fine and I think the premise is interesting. I’d like to see where it goes.

---

I’m always on the lookout for new manga to read, but I had only come across this award-winning series twice, the latest one when ChatGPT mentioned it. I wish I had read it sooner, because this long series (about 240 chapters) has become one of my favorites.

The story follows an assassin who works for a nameless organization called Fable by the criminal underworld of Japan. This assassin, considered the best of the best, is, as stated by his colleague slash little sister, a savant, a genius at killing, but a kid at everything else. He grew up fending for himself in the woods for days if not weeks at a time, eating all kinds of nasty shit, and stabbing bears in the eye. Apart from the psychological effects that such an upbringing would have on people (which is explored in the story), the guy is also socially blind and has little concern, as well as understanding, for social norms. Pretty sure he’s supposed to be autistic, because the other hardened assassins consider him a weirdo.

After an introductory hit on a bunch of goons, the guy’s boss tells both of his disciples that they have to lay low for a while: they’re ordered to leave town and spend a year living under the wing of the local Yakuza family. They are prohibited from killing anybody in the meantime, under the threat of getting whacked themselves.

The second disciple is a young woman who lost her parents at an early age and then was trained as an agent by this shady organization. She keeps herself drunk most of the time, partly to stave off boredom, mainly to drown the traumas that, along with her training, have rendered her unable to have normal relationships with people. The author could have played her entirely for laughs, or as a fool, but she’s tough and dependable, often the single person in charge of making sure that the dangerous people around her don’t jump at each other’s throats.

When the couple of assassins start living at the Yakuza safehouse, we see what passes for normal behavior for our mentally peculiar protagonist: he sleeps in the bathtub, he walks around (and greets guests) buck naked, he eats fish whole, and is endlessly amused by a third-rate comedian named Jackal. Because the protagonist comes across as an unimpressive dweeb, the hardened Yakuza people he gets to meet want to test his mettle, or resent that he’s occupying the safehouse rent-free for a year. Various dangerous individuals end up trying to ruin his existence for one reason or another, and he’s forced to deal with them without relying on the main ability that made him a legend.

He also pushes himself to hold down a normal job for near minimum wage, as a delivery driver and illustrator, which puts him in regular contact with normal people, exposing them to the dangers that follow him around.

The author blended together drama, comedy, action, and slice-of-life, with endearing, intelligently-written characters that hang out like buddies one moment only to then shoot each other in the face. For example, the grounded grittiness of a nerve-wracked underworld goon who has to avoid getting killed because he has outlived his usefulness, contrasted with a bored drunkard getting a young player so shit-faced that he injures and shits himself in public.

I can’t properly explain the vibe of this series, the then-and-there-ness of its narrative, but you can tell that this was a labor of love for the author, and that he lived vicariously through it. Even secondary goons that would have been cardboard cutouts in other stories get character arcs or at least the sense that they are the protagonist of their own story.

I only have two complaints, the first one quite significant: the first few chapters of the story felt off. I didn’t quite understand the vibe that the author was setting up, perhaps because at that point I assumed that the protagonist wasn’t intended to come off as an autistic weirdo. That led me to abandon the series the first time I came across it. My second complaint is that some of the fights were supposed to happen so fast (particularly those between members of the same organization of assassins) that they were depicted as blurs, which made them conspicuous in a medium that has depicted most of the memorable fight scenes in fiction.

This series was turned into a live-action film that is probably shit because the Japanese can rarely adapt their mangas into live-action movies properly (I suspect that it has to do with how the staff members and actors get chosen, because they have no issues creating amazing anime). Anyway, here's the link to the trailer.

If you enjoy manga and love character-driven stories, please read this series. It’s amazing.

In very immature broad strokes ill define this manga as, Japanese John Wick tries to take a vacation, unwillingly. Meet Fable, now named Akira Satou. Fable is a living legend in the Japanese organized crime cricles. He has been a freelance hitman for six years, working for various organizations, eliminating most big fish clients, like corrupt politician, celebrities, members of yakuza families gone rogue etc. Now, after 6 years of splendid service and millions made, his boss makes him and his driver take a vacation.
They are covered by a yakuza family they helped rise to the top and stay there for a few years. The family will set them up with a new identity, a place to stay and a car they shouldn’t touch, at all. Fable agrees reluctantly. Once they are in Osaka, he has to try and live a normal life, for a whole year. Both him and his now “sister” Youko. They can’t cause any trouble for their boss and the head of the family thats agreed to provide for them for the year. Naturally, things wont go over so smoothly. As fable himself realized at a parking lot, trouble finds him, one way or another. He realizes, not killing anyone for a year will not be easy.
There is also another reason. The deputy of the yakuza family is not keen on them staying in Osaka. He thinks they will bring danger, and events which might hurt the head and the family, the whole syndicate. So he instructs his underling to survey them, and set up mini traps for Fable, in hopes that he does something drastic, something deadly, which will make the head of the yakuza family banish them from Osaka.
The manga relays on Fables personality or lack there of for comedic effect. Its mostly hit and miss. Sure, its funny in a bizarre way when a stone faced killer with no remorse watches his favorite comedian 5 minutes after killing 6 people. He is generally aloof and needs Youko to set him straight, help him focus on the important things in the present moment. He will easily slide into everyday behavior, and she will pull him back into the new “normal” mode.
The art is very rough on the eyes, and that is a very good thing. Its gritty, realistic both in appearance and physics. Characters looks like random people, apart from two women characters who appear, nobody is even remotely attractive. The faces are very distinct and in most cases abhorrently ugly and unattractive, especially the first couple of guys he kills in the first chapter. Faces without symmetry and in some cases even most of their teeth. There is a lot of attention paid to details. Guns are unique, well drawn, and there are a lot of different varieties. The buildings and establishment shots come with a lot of details, mostly wide shots of dense urban areas. The fights, his movements during them, people getting shot feel real. There inst too much blood or flailing around.
All in all it feels like a grounded story about a genius hitman trying to be on vacation for a year, while bizarre things try to stir him back to killing as ruthlessly and as efficiently as he is known to do.

Alors voilà Akira et sa petite cagoule à la "King Ju" a tué un peu près 70 personnes alors le boss (sobrement appelé "Boss") de son clan l'envoie se "mettre au vert" Comme il ne se fout pas de sa gueule, il le fait accompagner par sa belle et jeune assistante Yōko Satō;

Fable is what they call one of the deadliest assassins in the underworld. After an especially busy year, his handler decides to lay low for a while. Fable is to hide in Osaka and live a normal life with his driver. They pose as brother and sister, Satou Akira and Satou Youko. While the driver easily adopts the new life, Fable's killer instincts make it a lot harder to follow suit.

This is a review of the complete series:

Probably the funniest manga I've ever read and really moving at times too. I saw one review on a different website wondering "what does this series have to say about life" but I actually think it's so much more than 99% of manga read amongst the typical Western crowd. It has a lot to say about family, friendships, life, death, and goodness; it just doesn't serve all these ideas up on a platter via multi-page monologues like so many others. Yeah this score is definitely relative to other manga, but I genuinely had a great time reading this one.

I read this series online over 3 days and didn't really stop to think of it as a serialized work. So this is more a general review of the whole series without spoilers.

Overall: I really liked it. This could have been very generic however the strong character decisions and quirks make this series a blast to read and very fun time.

I do feel the series eventually becomes more story driven and a bit more boring as we get less character moments. The ending to me is weak.

However as a whole work I enjoyed it and had a great time

might probably be hyped up but after reading this thrilling piece I am striving more and more for mangas / manhwas curated for adults.

Usually the way action mangas are drawn - I look forward to the anime to see the animation of fighting scenes.

Fable is one of these stories which has this sophisticated way of story telling - just flows event by event in a manner that you are just completely lost in it and won't even notice the time.

Yes the chapters are short but man the way you can eat up volumes in a few days since the flow is smooth 🤌

I'm a sucker for assassin fiction, yakuza stories, and reluctant redemption, so I should love this. It is quite good, but the humor is far too silly for my tastes. When the tale is played straight, I'm all in, but too much comic relief has me checked out. Still, it's hugely popular (and influential) for a reason. If the thought of a brilliant hit man forced to play nice intrigues you, give it a shot.

This is a review for the full series v1-22 I thought the overall premise of a hit man having to act like a normal citizen even while continuing to find himself in tricky situations pretty enticing.
The plot was solid nothing spectacular or ground breaking but it certainly kept my attention and was fun to read.

So it’s becoming an anime soon and I decided to check it out. Ngl I did enjoy it at first like ML is known to be this goofy but badass of a hitman and the characters he’s with were likeable too. I also liked the animals himself and the sister adopted. However I just got bored at around the 20 chaps in his “employed to a real job” arc as story dragged a bit and too many new characters added in.
