Perfect for fans of James Herriot, T.E. Kinsey, Gerald Durrell, J.R. Ellis or anyone who loves a great read.

It’s original, it’s funny . . . one of life’s little pleasures.” Yorkshire Post

**This heart-warming prequel winds back the clock on Nicholas Rhea’s beloved mystery series taking readers back to where it all started**

Constable Nick is a fresh-faced young policeman, with dreams of making it as a detective.

At last, he gets his big break.

With holiday madness at its height, the Crime Investigation Department needs a new recruit.

Nick jumps at the opportunity. He heads to the hectic seaside resort of Strensford and finds himself on the trail of two thieves.

The first is a phantom knicker-pincher. The second steals a van from under the driver’s very nose, along with its surprising cargo.

And that’s not all.

The race is on for Constable Nick to solve the toughest case of his fledgling career.

The brilliantly entertaining and heart-warming books behind the hit 90s TV series Heartbeat. One of the top ten most watched shows of the decade.

Stories of a constable on his village beat in North Yorkshire. All very gentle and far, far removed from the hurly burly of modern-day city policing.” Daily Telegraph

Constable Nick is telling stories of when he was first assigned to learn to be a detective. Subsequently these seem more like mysteries than some of the other books. There is even an account of a murder although there are the usual incidents that turn out to be something other than real crimes. This book was published in April 2022. I hope there are others and this is not the last one in the series. They have given me much delight in reading.

A good fit with the set of books that can also be read as a stand alone story.

Having never read a Constable book, but have seen many a Heartbeat episode, I was wondering how it would go.
My overall impression is to stick to TV series.
This was set as a prequel and had Nick as an aide to CID in Strensford (which I think is Whitby from the descriptions), and is just a series of events, each chapter being a story of its own.
It had its humour but was never, laugh out loud. And it saved its most serious story to the end.
The author's prose was very "matter of fact", you would think it was a factual book at times, not fiction ... or was it fiction?
Easily readable, but never engrossing.
I wonder if the early Constable books are better, but at the moment I won't attempt them unless readers' comments encourage me to do so.

I found this book a bit boring. There is too much info about police procedure and history which slows down the narrative.
