Vatican Secret Archive #3

The Petrus Prophecy

Rate this book
Father Jonah Barlow is dead. The respected Jesuit scholar of apocalyptic studies might have died from a fall in his apartment . . . or was he pushed? All that is known for sure is that the provocative manuscript he was working on—a book that promised to reveal the upcoming fulfillment of ancient and recent prophecies, including the ghastly and shocking Third Secret of Fatima—is missing.

Two female detectives—one from Chicago, the other from Rome—take on the investigation as a possible homicide, turning to Vatican archivist Father Michael Dominic for his help, since Barlow sent the young priest the only other copy of the manuscript.

Newly elected Pope Ignatius, Enrico Petrini, intent on verifying the content of the manuscript against the original handwritten version of the Third Secret—which has been kept sequestered in the Pope’s personal vault for decades—discovers that the keys have been stolen. The search is on for the only other set, kept safely in the hands of a trusted monk in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, a sinister ancient order known as the Knights of the Apocalypse seem to be using the predictions of the manuscript to create fear and chaos as the prophecies appear to be coming fulfilled. Is the end of the world imminent?

From Chicago to Jerusalem to Scotland, from Rome to the ancient island nation of Malta, join Father Dominic, journalist Hana Sinclair, their trusted team of Swiss Guards, a French commando, and the two detectives as they solve the bewildering puzzles of the Petrus Prophecy.

I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of the latest book in the Vatican Secret Archives trilogy. Its author, Gary McAvoy (and his new collaborator, Ronald L. Moore), continues to write compelling action plots, with exciting human drama meshed with a background of obscure, fascinating factual information. 5 Stars!

Father Michael Dominic returns with his friend Hana, a journalist with a talent for solving cryptic puzzles, two dependable Swiss Guards, Karl and Lucas, well trained in military tactics, Hana's bodyguard and lover, Marco, a former Green Beret and French commando. It is like reuniting with old friends.
They are joined in a frantic adventure by two female detectives, one from Chicago and one from Rome. The women seem quite capable of outmanoeuvring threats. The Italian detective has powerful friends to call on for assistance, whereas the American appears to be intent on flirting with the handsome Father Dominic.

Father Jonah Barlow died when he fell or was pushed down the stairs in his apartment. Missing is a book promising to reveal upcoming results of ancient and recent prophecies, including the third secret of Fatima. It was said to be so frightening that Pope John XXIII fainted when he read it. The warning was considered so shocking that successive Popes kept it locked away in a vault. The present Pope Ignatius ( formerly known as Father Petrini) has not read it. The two female detectives believe Father Barlow was murdered before the third prediction of Fatima could be revealed. They contacted Father Michael Dominic, whom Barlow sent the only copy of the manuscript. Michael found the latter part of the book too vague to be helpful.

The keys to the vault have been stolen. A second set is kept with a monk in Jerusalem killed while on the phone with Michael. A sinister fanatical group mixing evangelical belief with Catholicism called the Knights of the Apocalypse seems to be using Barlow's book to predict the imminent end of the world and spreading fear and turmoil among their followers in a conspiracy to enrich themselves. Do they have the actual Fatima prophecy, or are they using misleading fabricated information? What devious mind is behind the evil plans, and can he be stopped?

The team rushes from Jerusalem to Scotland, Rome, and Malta in an attempt to solve the mysterious secret of the Petrus puzzle and prevent mass hysteria and further deaths. To find the missing keys to the Pope's vault, they must solve some difficult cryptic clues. Michael's group is in peril of their lives, being pursued by frantic Knights of the Apocalypse members. Their final plan is to be a diabolical act of mass murder in a shattering conclusion no one could have predicted. Pope Ignatius ( Michael's godfather, mentor and more) is shot when he tries to deny the apocalyptic teachings at a rally. Later, Father Dominic makes a heartfelt confession to the Pope about an unresolved conflict troubling him.

The Petrus Prophecy is a splendid, fast-paced, intense mystery with plenty of action, well-developed characters, and a vivid sense of place.
This entertaining book can be read as a standalone. Prospective readers would enjoy knowing the main characters better and some of the complex cases and villains they encountered in the past books. I look forward to Father Michael Dominic's and Hana's next adventure. The Petrus Prophecy is due for publication in late April.

First and foremost, a large thank you to Gary McAvoy for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Gary McAvoy never ceases to amaze with his stellar writing, one of the reasons I rushed to begin the latest novel in the Vatican Secret Archive series, featuring Father Michael Dominic. As McAvoy collaborates with Ronald L. Moore, they examine yet another mystery housed within the Vatican, while sinister forces seek to push the limits once again. McAvoy and Moore guide readers through a historical event shrouded in secrecy, providing plausible possibilities, which only amp up the level of curiosity. The story of the Secrets of Fatima is one known to many Catholics around the world. When Pope John Paul II revealed the third secret in 2000, he did so to dispel much of the hype that had built up over the past forty years, when his predecessors began refusing to share the secret with the general public. Now, an American priest and scholar is dead, and a group known as the Knights of the Apocalypse (KOTA) claim that the End Times are nigh, as they prepare to reveal the true text of the secret. Father Michael Dominic is pulled into the middle, seeking to find the true document and ensure the sitting pope is privy to its meaning, so that the Church can face its enemies, including those from within. McAvoy and Moore do a sensational job with the action and posit some intriguing possibilities for the reader to synthesise.

When three children saw a vision of the Holy Mother in 1917, their small Portuguese town was put on the map. The Three Secrets of Fatima became one of the major miracles chronicled by the Church. Two of the three secret, depicting premonitions, were revealed, though the third, so shocking and scandalous, was never publicly shared. Popes shied away from it, as its truths, speaking of the End of Days, were too problematic. Seeking to dilute the gossip and wonder, Pope John Paul II shed light on the secret in 2000, though many believe it was a false message meant to extinguish flames of speculation and curiosity.

When a priest and scholar working on a piece about the truth surrounding the Third Secret is found murdered in Chicago, a local police constable cannot help but wonder if there is a Vatican connection. When the name of Father Michael Dominic enters the discussion, said constable is keen to learn more from the man who heads the Vatican Secret Archives. A trip to Rome is in order, where the constable connects with one of her Italian counterparts to open an international investigation.

After approaching Father Dominic, he is just as confused as they are, but soon learns that there is more to the story than meets the eye. During the nefarious past few years, it would seem that the sitting pope was not given access to a key collection of documents, which include the Third Secret of Fatima. All the while, a group calling itself the Knights of the Apocalypse (KOTA) begins broadcasting news that they are in the possession of the Secret and will soon reveal it. This pushes Catholics around the world into a panic and places the Vatican on the defensive.

While Father Dominic and his core team race around Europe to locate a key that will grant the sitting pope access to a safe that contains the true documents, they are followed by those who would rather see them dead. Dominic soon learns how important these documents could be, as well as the importance to obtain the truth before KOTA wrestles control of the Vatican’s trust away from the world at large. What neither Dominic nor the sitting pope can know is just how far some people will go to discredit the Vatican hierarchy once and for all, tied to a handful of men who have been eyeing revenge for years. A brilliant addition to the series, which presents new layers of wonder related to Catholic truths and secrecy within the Holy See.

I have followed Gary McAvoy on this Vatican journey from the opening pages of the debut novel, which gripped me like few other series I have read. Many themes point to a Vatican that remains complex and multi-layered, which mirrors the Catholic Church in general. McAvoy brings Ronald L. Moore in as a collaborator, allowing them to find ways to bring the story to life and create gripping adventures, layered with historical events. The characters grow on the series reader as each story connects seamlessly. The authors provide a great series for all to enjoy, particularly the reader with an interest in all things Vatican.

Father Michael Dominic resumes his role as protagonist of the series, continuing to make his mark. His backstory remains complex and evolving, as series fans have come to discover. Devout in his faith, Dominic enjoys his work within the Vatican Archives, though he finds mysteries outside the walls of the Holy See that keep him constantly on the run. Danger appears to surround him, though he evades it with prowess, rather than pure brawn. The series has moved into some intriguing times, leaving the reader to wonder how Dominic will fit into the larger narrative, particularly with his revelation in the closing pages.

Gary McAvoy has long created a buzz around his stories and the collaborative effort with Ronald L. Moore once again puts the reader in the middle of the action. The narrative develops with each passing chapter, providing mysteries and curiosities sure to leave the reader hungering for more. As the authors intertwiine modern events with historical goings-on, explosive revelations add depth to an already strong foundation. Well-crafted characters, particularly those who reappear and build on their past developments, help create an emotional connection for the reader. While the theme may be the End of Days, once can hope McAvoy (and Moore?) have more to say on the matter, as things have reached a tense point in the series, with an obvious fork in the road towards future developments.

Kudos, Messrs. McAvoy and Moore, for another great piece in the series. You have captivated me yet again!

4.5-Stars >> 4.0 of 5.0 - Very enjoyable!

As a regular listener to, and reader of fiction, I am fully aware of the need to accept some levels of implausibility, it is a fictional story, after all, but in the "The Petrus Prophecy", particularly in its latter stages, for me, the story became a little too incredible and a little too confusing. Although this book is otherwise an excellent novel, as a consequence I shaved half a point off my rating.

As with #1 and #2 in the Vatican Secret Archive series, the story/plot(s) benefit greatly from the amount of detailed research conducted by author Gary McAvoy and accordingly my Cultural Catholic inclinations were satisfied to a high degree. However, I remain a committed agnostic atheist. :)

Late edit: I remain extremely impressed with the narrating skills demonstrated by Will Damron. His reading and vocal characterisations are superb and really enhance the enjoyment of this audiobook.

In September 2020 I first found a new to me author, GARY McAVOY, and have been a happy reader of his books ever since. Book number six, THE PETRUS PROPHECY, once again features Father Michael Dominic (Director of the Vatican Secret Archives) and his group of friends that include members of the Swiss Guard (from the Vatican), an investigative reporter for the French newspaper Le Monde (and Swiss banking heiress), her grandfather/Swiss banker and her French bodyguard/companion. To this mix are added female police officers from Rome, Malta and Chicago. The author has brought onboard a co-author for the first time – Ron Moore – an expert in police affairs.
Arrayed against “Team Michael” are a defrocked Cardinal (longtime nemesis), the Archbishop of Washington D.C., an astronomer, and a group of ne’er do wells called the Knights of the Apocalypse (K.O.T.A.), an evil offshoot of the Knights of Malta.
As in his previous stories, the author weaves fact into his fiction. The story opens in Fatima, Portugal in 1917 in the last years of World War 1 with the famous Miracle of the Dancing Sun as witnessed by tens of thousands of citizens culminating with the sighting of the Virgin Mary by three young shepherds. From the Virgin, they received three prophecies: a horrific vision of the Underworld, the end of WW I and the beginning of WW II and a third prophecy that is still a secret known only to the Popes in the Vatican. It is rumored that, in 1960, when Pope John XXIII opened the Secret, he was terrified and fainted.
In present day Chicago, Father Jonah Barlow, a scholar, archaeologist, exorcist and author purportedly discovers the Third Prophecy and is about to publish a book containing that secret. He falls down the steps in his home and dies. Chicago police homicide detective Rebecca Lancaster is called upon to determine whether it was an accident or murder and to find a missing manuscript. She has to go to Rome as part of her investigation where she teams up with an old friend Capitano Sabrina Felici of the Carabinieri. (This is where the most unbelievable part of the story happens. Capitano Felici owns and drives a Ferrari Testarossa. What makes this ring untrue is how can she afford the car on a policer’s salary? However, if James Bond can afford Aston Martins why not Sabrina and her Ferrari?)
Team Michael visits Chicago, Rome, Rosslyn Chapel (of Da Vinci Code fame), Jerusalem and Malta in their quest to stop the K.O.T.A from their evil plan that includes domination of the Catholic Church, financial gain and mass suicide. The Team has to find two duplicate keys to a safe inside the Pope’s office in the Vatican. The two original keys went missing and the spares were sent to a monk in Jerusalem for safe (pun intended) keeping. The monk upon hearing of the death of Father Jonah dispersed the keys to for safety’s sake. Michael needs to find the spare keys in order for the safe to be opened.
Once again, GARY McAVOY shows off his skill as a storyteller, blending fact and fiction into a book that this reader could not put down. If you have not yet “discovered” his books, you are in for a treat. I suggest starting with book one, THE MAGDALEN DECEPTION, for full enjoyment of the series. Mystery fans, history buffs and lovers of good stories will have fun reading his books. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Another good one

I liked the book as I have all the previous books. It's why I keep buying them.
This annoying review process of having to write 20 words or the review won't take is really "over the top" when it comes to things that tick me off

The last two books I have read were something of a drag to get through and for my next book I wanted something lighter and more fast paced. This book has been sitting on my TBR shelf for a few months and I thought it would fill the bill and I was correct. This is another fun adventure for Father Michael Dominic head of the Vatican's Secret Archives and his usual cast of characters. That list of characters would be his wealthy investigative reporter friend Hana Sinclair and her bodyguard boyfriend Marco along with her gay Swiss Guard cousin Lucas and his Swiss Guard boyfriend Karl. This adventure involves the legendary Third Secret of Fatima and an apparent book in the final stages of preparation for publication. The book is written by a priest and former teacher of Fr. Dominic and it is supposedly an expose' of the Vatican's secrecy concerning this infamous secret and the impending world apocalypse it predicts. The author is killed in a possible accidental fall but the police in Chicago where the author lives are not convinced and the only thing missing from the author's apartment is the manuscript for the book. But there is a note on the author's desk indicating that he has sent a copy to Fr. Dominic for his opinion. From this point the story jumps to Rome, Jerusalem, Scotland, and Malta and then back to Rome and all while the world is threatened with the madness surrounding the impending doom of the planet. Definitely a fun escapist read for readers that enjoy a good thriller. Enjoy.

I have read all of McAvoy's novels and this may very well be the best one yet. As in his earlier novels, he does a great job combining historical facts and current ideas in a well presented setting, all through a creatively imagined and compelling plot. McAvoy usually explores nefarious deeds centered on historical aspects of the Catholic Church. This novel was especially interesting to me because it explores current ideas about the Lord's Second Coming, something Protestant Christians concentrate on too.

In this novel, a sect of the Catholic Church is obsessed with the Second Coming. McAvoy plays on the Protestant Christian habit of trying to find prophetic fulfillment in current events. The Catholic sect goes one step further in actually trying to create the prophesied events.

I really like how McAvoy explores the nature of Bible prophecy in general, such as its vagueness, being open to various ideas of fulfillment. I like how he brings attention to what Dominic calls End Times fever, something that “crops up every few generations.” (1656/3880) I like his using the fact that people see what they want or expect and how easily they can be manipulated in that respect.

I really liked this engaging novel. While it deals with a sect in the Catholic Church, the compelling plot will be appreciated by anyone interested in how Christians approach the immanent nature of Christ's return. McAvoy does an excellent job of combining historical facts with his imaginary fiction, distinguishing them in his notes at the end. While this novel is down the line in a series, it reads well on its own. It's a good one to start with if none of his novels have been read.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.

McAvoy has done it again! “The Petrus Prophecy” the sixth installment in “The Magdalene Chronicles” is a must read, especially if you’re hooked on these characters as much as I am. Father Michael Dominic and gang are back and this time they’re joined by two new detectives. When a priest in Chicago who was working on a manuscript that could reveal the fulfillment of the third of the three secret prophecies, The Secret of Fatima, is found dead, it may not have been an accident. The Chicago investigator handling the case is certain a closer look is just what this case needs. To get to the bottom of this “accident” she’ll need to travel to Rome for answers where she pairs up with a savvy detective with the Rome police who contacts Father Dominic, the Vatican Archivist and the only other person who’s seen a copy of the manuscript the priest was working on prior to his death.

These books are edge of your seat reads that will keep you guessing into the wee hours of the night. You can’t put this one down! Since this is now the sixth book, I feel like I know these characters and have grown to love the “forbidden fruit” relationship between Father Dominic and his friend Hana. Oh, if only he didn’t have that pesky white collar around his neck. But in this one we see another side to their “relationship.” Hana is now interested in another man and Father Dominic seems bothered by it, and when the detective from Chicago shows attraction to the handsome Father, Hana gets bitten by the green-eyed monster herself, so perhaps they aren’t as ready to move on as they thought. I’m staying tuned for more on this storyline!

The keys to the Pope’s secret safe are missing and of course Father Dominic and friends are charged with finding them. As Father Dominic and gang travel from country to country and from one lead to another in hopes of finding the keys, others with ill intent will be right on his heels making sure he doesn’t get too close. And here lies the excitement of these books. Just when you think the good guys are winning, in comes a twist and the whole story changes and this happens repeatedly. It’s a non-stop roller coaster ride of thrills, chills, drama, and intrigue. It’s a chase of good versus evil and when the mastermind is revealed as a former nemesis of Father Dominic’s, well I was shocked. Didn’t see that coming at all!

McAvoy’s research must be exhaustive. The history and facts he shares in this and the other books are Vatican and ancient Catholic Church history at its best. His knowledge on the topic is evident and flows onto the pages with clarity unlike most authors. This author really knows his theology and the Catholic Church specifically. I’ve learned so much from his books about the Catholic Church and the Vatican, both interesting and shocking. Being someone who doesn’t believe in God, I’ve always found these books to be a refreshing change from most books that center around faith, God and/or religion. McAvoy can present both sides without offending anyone. He allows the reader to draw their own conclusions without forcing them to make a choice. I love that Father Dominic questions his own beliefs at times and seems like a real man, not some prophet or holy man without faults. From book one I picked up on his questioning of his faith and its rules and that indecision and reflection continues in this one, but this time he says the quiet part out loud and leaves the reader with a bit of a cliffhanger.

It's the non-stop action, the back and forth “forbidden fruit” relationship between Hana and Father Dominic, the superior detail McAvoy puts into his writing that describes the scene so well that I can almost see the sights and smell the smells as the characters travel through their days and the thrills and chills of the chase that keep me coming back. This is a series I’m hoping goes on and on. It’s unputdownable, it’s filled with amazing and real characters and the historical facts are icing on the cake for this historical fiction fan! Sign me up, I’m on board for many more books in this series! It’s another 5-star read for me! Happy Reading!

A fast paced and exciting story, of mystery, mayhem and conspiracy at the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church.
Three prophecies are given to three shepherd children in Fatima in 1917.
Nearly one hundred years later, a splinter group of the Knights of Malta, KOTA (Knights of the Apocalypse) want to discredit the Holy See and to defraud as many people as possible out of as much as possible, whilst making the faithful who donate that they'll soon be with jesus on His Second Coming.
The reader is taken from the USA, to Rome, Vatican City, Malta and Scotland as the narrative carries us along to the inevitable exciting conclusion.

Another ARC from my immensely talented namesake, and a particularly exciting instalment to his Vatican mysteries series. As with all Gary’s books, you know exactly what to expect: a likeable, intelligent and virtuously trustworthy team of amateur sleuths; a powerful and arch-criminal nemesis; and an incredible amount of factual research, mixed with creative licence. The only thing you don’t know is which ancient artefact or religious doctrine will be the focus. I have to admit, half a dozen or so books into the series, this group of clerical crime-fighters is really starting to grow on me, and now layers particularly of arguably main character Father Michael Dominic are being peeled back with each outing, I’m liking it.

This time, what is at stake would appear to be the very Apocalypse itself, and the team are not charged with stopping it, so much, as uncovering the potential fraud it obviously is, who is behind it and why. In doing so, they carry out their usual globetrotting and puzzle-solving, all the while with the Vatican as their home base and primary setting. Gary is an extraordinary author, absolutely unique in the respect that I have really come across one so meticulous, so well educated in terms of theology, history and geo-politics. He is the type of professional that the rest of us can only aspire to be, and even helpfully sets out for us in an actually very welcome appendix just what is reality and what is created in his book; it is fair to say that most of us will clearly see just what actual knowledge Gary is sharing with us throughout. Obviously no-one is born with that level of innate knowledge, and most of us don’t graduate with it either, so I think it is fair to say that he has done a tremendous, jaw dropping amount of research into this book, as with all in this series. Sometimes, I’ll admit, these books feel like a showcase for this knowledge and research, particularly geographical, but I say if you have it, flaunt it; and if you don’t have it, learn it. Gary shows us mere mortal writers how fact-based fiction should be done.

Admittedly, the books in the series all adhere to formula, and this is no different: the first half is usually spent building the intrigue and creating the story; the second half is when all the action happens – and Gary does a good job, as always, of incorporating all of his action-oriented cast. This is a pretty good instalment to the saga, and definitely one of my favourites. But, as always with these books, the outstanding, flabbergasting work of the author and his factual-creativity are the real stars. The way he crafts the copiously abundant facts into fiction is quite simply stunning.

Well, I think the other reviewers have said it well, but I'll add in my thoughts. I love Gary McAvoy's books with their vivid descriptions of places, events, and history. He adds riddles to challenge your brain throughout the book. The characters are not ordinary people, but they are written in a way that makes you want to join them on the adventure. Father Michael Dominic finds the most intriguing situations in which he becomes involved. Between the vivid descriptions, getting to know Father Michael and his friends, and the history-based story, you really feel that you are part of the Team. The places are real with drawings throughout the book with accompanying riddles. The Petrus Prophecy plays perfectly into today's world with feelings of end-of-world events, but it doesn't end. It's another rollercoaster ride of history, characters and adventure. Other books seem "flat" in comparison to Mr. McAvoy's stories.

The Petrus Prophesy is written by Gary McAvoy and Ronald L. Moore. They've done a magnificent job blending their work together to create a splendid adventure! Read--you won't be disappointed.

I have just finished reading The Petrus Prophecy by Gary McAvoy in collaboration with Ronald L. Moore and am experiencing a feeling akin to the first time I left the Louvre Museum in Paris after wandering from room to room. I was struck mute (an exceedingly rare occurrence) in the presence of too many masterpieces! Adequate words fail me at this moment to describe the totality of the details, nuances, and minutia woven seamlessly into the intricacies of the tale of the day the sun danced and fell to the earth in Fatima, Portugal at the turn of the century. The Third Secret of Fatima is an unexplained and mysterious secret prophecy as foretold by the Lady of Fatima, Portugal who appeared to three children in 1917. To date, the Third Secret remains one of mankind’s most fascinating and enduring mysteries. It should have been disclosed several times over the last 62 years, but for reasons known only to the Popes who failed to release the true nature of the Third Secret and prophecy, it remains as mysterious today as it was more than a century ago when the Lady appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal and made the sun dance and fall to earth to prove her divinity. There is great controversy surrounding the Third Secret of Fatima which Pope John Paul II purportedly released to the public in 2000. The Vatican claimed at that time that the entirety of Lucia Santos’ recollection of the words spoken to her and her two cousins by the Lady who appeared to them in 1917 was released to the public in 2000. Sister Lucia, the surviving child of the three to whom the Lady appeared, wrote a lengthy description of the Lady’s Third Secret and prophecy in 1943 at the insistence of her local church official, Bishop Silva, and gave it to him in a sealed envelope that was not to be opened until the year 1960. The sealed envelope was given to the Vatican in 1957, where it is said to have remained ever since. Over the years, many Popes refused to disclose the Third Secret and prophecy because, according to Vatican critics it was too horrific to release. These Vatican critics claim that there was significantly more to the prophecy that Sister Lucia wrote which was never told to the public, and that criticism remains rampant and fertile to this day. Enter Gary McAvoy, using this background as the starting point for The Petrus Prophecy, wherein the Third Secret is about to be made known to the world, and the hidden forces of good and evil who wish to use this secret for their own reasons!
The Petrus Prophecy is hands down my favorite Gary McAvoy story of all time!! Exciting, fast-paced, mysterious, spiritual, thrilling, perilous, and indelibly moving, The Petrus Prophecy is Mr. McAvoy’s most emotively resonant and richly told story to date. If he wasn’t there before, this novel should catapult Mr. McAvoy to the very top seat among authors writing in the action/thriller/mystery genres, it is that well-written and enjoyable to read. As with all his novels, accuracy on every level is his forte and will be first and foremost what his readers will discover about his writing habits: painstaking historic, and technical research is the hallmark of his work. Mr. McAvoy sets a standard in this arena which is hard to surpass because his background work is impeccable! The reader will find accurate portrayals of not only the events which occurred, but, in all seriousness, his novels could be used to navigate a reader in any port of call about which he has written. The settings of his novels are rich with exacting detail to the point which I venture to say a reader could know the offerings of any restaurant mentioned in his work and rely on that information when traveling to that locale. Mr. McAvoy’s need to convey only the most up-to-date, state of the art information in his novels extends to specific landmarks and their descriptions, neighborhoods and their ethnic mix, religious, social and cultural mores prevalent in the areas about which he writes as well as specific times and eras, along with tactical and political protocols and maneuvers contemporaneous to the times and dates within which the events occurred, and the very latest in cutting edge advancements in both the military and AI technologies. Such precision mandates hours and hours dedicated to learning all there is to know about his subject matter, setting, time, and all things which could potentially impact the intended plot line of the protagonists. Such efforts bespeak a work ethic which is breathtaking in scope and unparalleled in effort! As I experienced The Petrus Prophecy (and make no mistake, it is an experience to read this story), I could not help but savor and truly appreciate the finer points brought to light by this author. Every one of Mr. McAvoy’s novels that I have read, has been an education, but he is so skillful an artisan with the written word that I was not consciously aware that my brain was simultaneously tucking away the historical, tactical, religious, cultural and political significance iterated under the guise of his telling a story; because at all times my focus was squarely on the complexities and nuances of the un-put-down-able and exciting adventure unfolding before my eyes!
I thought Mr. McAvoy’s previous novel The Opus Dictum (which, like all of his earlier works [The Magdalene Chronicles: 3 book series, The Vivaldi Cipher, and And Every Word Is True] comprise solid, captivating, edge-of-your-seat thrillers that absolutely cannot be missed), was sheer perfection at the time I read the final word and sat back amazed and overwhelmed by its impact on me. However, I realized I was very much mistaken because without a doubt The Petrus Prophecy stands out as the best among Mr. McAvoy’s body of work which he has written to date. The Petrus Prophecy is utter, sheer, and absolute perfection! The import of the way he wrote this novel has turned my world upside down and inside out, blowing the roof off the building (leaving all the little children wet, cold, homeless and hungry), decimating the rain forest (forever destroying all undiscovered plants and species that could have cured every illness known to mankind), and forever preventing womankind from shattering the glass ceiling (leaving the fairer sex downtrodden and under the male thumb for all eternity) (obviously these 3 examples of my upside down world are gross exaggerations!). Mr. McAvoy’s novel certainly had me on my toes with all of the unexpected twists and turns throughout the plot and these were juxtaposed against the multi-layers of characters both good and evil: the upright (i.e., the Pope, inter alia, representing holiness) and the sinners (i.e., the Pope, inter alia, representing sinners), and these characters were contrasted with the excessive opulence (i.e., the Roman Catholic Church, and Hana Sinclair’s grandfather’s lifestyle) and the grueling poverty prevalent in 1917’s Fatima, Portugal. The great wealth and abject poverty represented in this novel also stood in stark relief to the undercurrent of emotions compelling the main protagonists in this novel (i.e., Hana and Michael’s unrequited love for one another held hands with Hana’s ongoing relationship with Marco)! And foremost among these tonal contrasts which provide richness and depth to this novel lies financial greed of humankind versus the messages of love, peace, and healing all of mankind through the mystery and intersession of the Divine. Mr. McAvoy seamlessly wove every detail and minutia along with his creative artistry into this wondrous tale!
So, RUN to the store to purchase this wonderfully ingenious tale filled with thrills, mystery, Divine intervention, and secret apocalyptic prophecies, that are coming to fruition before it’s too late…

I absolutely love how Gary McAvoy delves into the “not spoken” side of the Catholic Church. As a product of eight years of parochial school, my knowledge of the tarnished side of things is considerable and I appreciate McAvoy’s navigation through these waters. Many times I had to grab my phone to research a technique or place. Looking at the Xara Palace was a wonderful side adventure! I like his blending of real life things with the fictionalized aspects, and the fact vs fiction chapter is always the icing on the cake for me. I’ve read all of the Magdalene Chronicles and now all of the Vatican Secret Archives…I consider each a special treat and look forward to his next installment!

Fatima. I’ve long been fascinated by the Fatima prophecies. The first 2 prophecies have been revealed. (The first said Catholics must renew their devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second described hell.) But the third appeared to be so frightening that every Pope kept it hidden in the Sacred Archives. Pope John Paul II finally revealed it because so many fanatics assumed it described the end of the world.

It doesn’t. It predicts an attack on the Pope which actually happened in 1981 on the Feast Day of Fatima.

One of the best parts of this series is how the characters develop. This is #5 with Father Michael et al. Their friendship and devotion to one another and the truths they uncover make them so very likable. Those who love stories set in the Vatican (like me) will devour this series. I listened to all of them, right in a row. Barely stopped to sleep.

Once again Gary McAvoy has used his research well in developing the intrigue developed in this fast paced novel. The relationship between Hana and Michael (Dominic) may have taken an interesting twist amid the life-threatening experiences that they experience amid the labyrinth of the streets of Malta. Trying to avoid the threat to the populace who fear that the world is coming to an end, the cache of characters once again are able to thwart forces working against them, but at a cost.

I am amazed at the accuracy of the details of the streets the characters wander. They are accurate and bring to life other locations that one may never have an opportunity to visit.

Another fantastic read

I have thoroughly enjoyed the exploits of Father Dominic and his friends. Again another story that has had a lot of research and combining fact and fiction to bring a brilliant story. My only issue was the wrong and cringe worthy attempt at the Scottish dialogue, being Scottish I found this irksome. However, still a fabulous read and I am hoping we have not seen the last of Father Dominic and friends.

Another Fantastic Book By Gary McAvoy

This book is a great mixture of actual events related to the end of times prophecies, and fictional speculations of what the Third Secret of Fatima is. There is a wonderful back story of people being convinced to give up everything , including money and their lives to avoid the times of tribulation. There are many twists and turns as Michael and Hana team up again to recover religious documents stolen from the Papacy.

There are international thriller authors and then there's Gary McAvoy. Once again, McAvoy doesn't disappoint with The Petrus Prophecy. He's such a joy to read.

The Petrus Prophecy is an epic thriller that takes you on an unforgettable, high-stakes thrill ride, with compelling characters, page-turning action, and twist after twist.

If you're looking for a fun, high-energy book that also manages to educate with history and is infused with complex themes, you definitely want to read this one!

Like his previous books in this genre, this one was hard to put down. Sporting the usual cast of individuals they once again embarked on an adventure. This time the stakes were far higher as a group sought both to disrupt society and gain financial benefits from their actions. While it didn't it earlier, it was no surprise that Dante was at the heart of the process and ultimately met an untimely end.

What I enjoy about these books is the incorporation of real locations and stories along with those that are developed along with the novel's plot. As with all his other books, the author separates fact from fiction in a section at the end. His description of the environment (locations, food, buildings, etc.) is detailed and wonderful to read.

Yet another exciting book from McAvoy!

This was , in my opinion , his best of the series. Exciting, page after p.age. Some new characters added to the bo9k as well. Will there be a sequel? Who knows, but if there is I’ll happily read it too!

Great Vatican Mystery

I really enjoyed this new adventure with Michael , Hana and the gang. The new police characters fit in with our usual cast very smoothly. Lots of action and written so well that you feel that you are part of the action.

A very amazing story. It is my second book from Gary McAvoy, and I enjoyed it. So much historical facts and research have gone into these Storys. It is sometimes difficult to see the difference between facts and fiction and that makes it great reading.
I look forward seeing the following book.
