In the heart of Chicago, beneath the veil of mundane reality, six sisters find themselves thrust into a world of magic, mystery, and peril. Bound by blood and an ancient lineage, their lives take a surprising turn when they unexpectedly inherit extraordinary powers, powers that hold the key to an age-old prophecy.
As they navigate their newfound abilities, the sisters soon discover they are not alone in this realm of mysticism. A powerful dark force stirs in the shadows, demonic entities drawn by the untamed power within them. The prophecy speaks of a great battle, a confrontation that will determine the fate of their world. But the path to victory is riddled with treachery and uncertainty, and they cannot triumph alone. Enter an unlikely ally, a mysterious figure, someone they shouldn’t trust.
Yet, their journey is not just about embracing their extraordinary abilities and combating supernatural threats. In a world where magic remains a secret, they must conceal their powers, tiptoeing through the masquerade of everyday life. With every step they take, the risk of exposing their true nature looms, endangering not only their lives but also the balance between worlds.
Will the sisters master their powers in time to face the encroaching darkness? Can they unravel the ancient prophecy and fulfill their destinies? And above all, can they remain united, even when the world conspires to tear them apart?
Recommend for mature readers as this book contains violence and strong language.
This is a fast paced read with a bunch of main characters. The sisters learn as they go which brings the reader along on the same journey. It was difficult to keep the individuals separate so I just considered them all the protagonist. Adding more to the story development would have improved this but it is a good book for a quick escape read.
A great read with quirky and strong protagonists set in an extremely fast paced environment. Filled with twists and turns, and some snarky humour to lighten the mood, this was one exciting read. One thing I really liked from it is how the sisters all worked together on the front lines instead of just observing and commanding, they make good role models for leadership.
Tiffany Kahapea's "Hidden Magic" is a captivating urban fantasy that immerses readers in a world where the ordinary collides with the extraordinary. Set against the backdrop of Chicago, the story follows six sisters who, after inheriting extraordinary powers, find themselves entwined in an age-old prophecy that foretells a battle for the fate of their world.
The plot unfolds with a perfect blend of magic, mystery, and peril, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Kahapea weaves a tale of sisterhood, sacrifice, and the unyielding power of love. The characters, each with unique abilities and personalities, form a compelling ensemble. From Miranda's fiery leadership to Ashley's enigmatic command over the afterlife, the sisters' diverse strengths contribute to the richness of the narrative.
The language is evocative, painting a vivid picture of a world where magic remains a secret, and the sisters must navigate the masquerade of everyday life. The author skillfully balances the supernatural elements with the challenges of concealing their powers, adding layers of tension and suspense.
The premises of "Hidden Magic" are well-crafted, with a looming dark force and demonic entities adding depth to the mystical realm. The book explores themes of trust, unity, and the resilience required to face an encroaching darkness. There are three more books in this series, and I am quite excited to read the rest of it.
This was a great book to read. I really enjoyed the character development. It absolutely passed the Bechdel test. I loved how everyone worked together and the way the characters played off one another. I love when women support one another through struggles in a book rather than compete with one another. It was through a feminist lens. Loved that!
I'm not a huge fan of magic or fantasy but the magic in the series made sense, it added to the plot, and it was pretty essential. This was a good use of the fantastical!
As for the language, this doesn't appear to be straight up YA. I am not sure why the language is offending people but I thought the book was well-done. I don't think the language or violence took away from the book at all. It was an important bit of realism for the characters.
Cute story about sisters gaining magic powers and all of the problems that come with it. The amount of main characters was hard to keep track of and really learn as individuals. This story was originally 4 stories, turned into 1, and it very much showed. It seemed like the story just moved from villain to villain, and they were all worst they had ever fought. It felt very rushed and like there was too much story shoved in one book. It would have been nice to have each story be thoroughly fleshed out before moving on to the next. There were these massive time jumps throughout the story, but it never seemed like the characters aged at all, in physical capabilities, attributes, or maturity. It seemed as though they were in their twenties the entire time. Overall the story was interesting and if you are a fan of magic or fantasy, you will probably enjoy this book.
The idea behind the book is great and has a lot of promise. The book itself felt like it was written by a teenager. Everyone miraculously has tons of powers. Everyone is an expert fighter who specializes in some type of martial arts. Everyone is somehow in a law enforcement type of job. Fights come up and 6 against hundreds always win. The way people spoke. The situations and events that come about. Even books about magic need to have some aspects of realism in them. While the premise behind the book is good, I could not stand the way the story was told.
If you like fantasy, action, and sisterhood then this is the book for you. I did however find the hard to keep some of the characters apart, but overall it was a good book.
A fast paced read that make the pages flip themselves. A magical world that 6 sisters fell into and now have to step up their game. Funny, magical and fully entertaining. Tiffany Kahapea brought the magick!!
The story starts with the 6 sisters trying to move on after their mother's death and unexpected things happen and their lives has been put into supernaturally chaotically dangerous situation.
The Turning is definitely a fast paced urban fantasy set into the modern world. Definitely way too fast paced the felt like the plot is over all the place and at the same time messy.
The events of the story were almost cut off on each chapter to jump onto the next one just to keep it moving and also at the same time not too long on which I think would have been much more better if it was longer and more organized.
I also felt that this was a long prologue to the main series which I felt was a let down considering how it was done.
There were elements that I really enjoy in this story to which was mixed of mythological creatures and a chaotic set of protagonists that just frustratingly their banter were fun to read.

The six sisters were definitely chaotic. They were the main reason why the book was much more bearable.
I just felt that their characters weren't done that well and also at the same time unrealistic, especially the part where they realised that they are not just regular human beings.
The overarching concept of this series is excellent. The characters and the storyline are well thought out. Action packed and you can feel the love between the sisters and that the author has in writing this series. The one criticism I have is that the story felt too rushed and events too manipulated in order to get to the next plot line especially in this first book. A good editor I think could help make this series into a top seller. Overall I am eally glad I kept reading as this was a really good series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After reading the first book in this series, I immediately dove into the second, and I was not disappointed. The Bates sisters are amazing, a great team and really show the power of teamwork in tricky situations. The urban fantasy layout is just as amazing as the first. That ending also really makes me just want to drop everything and dive into the third. Looking forward to continuing this great journey!
This is such a cool story! I love urban fantasy because it is fantasy in modern day life. I have read many urban fantasy novels, but this is on a level on its own. What makes it so good? Well you have six sisters working together, snarky banter and a conflict set in such a descriptive urban setting, it seems like real life. Definitely recommend. *trigger warning: strong language*
A unique ending for such an enjoyable series. Extremely fast paced and full of action and suspense, I literally read this one all in one go. I really enjoyed reading this book, as much as I enjoyed the rest of the series. The urban fantasy genre is amazing and very well done and realistic, and the bond between the six sisters is the driving force that pulls them through.
Extremely fast paced and full of action, book 3 is a marvel in itself. This time, war has broken out between those with magic and those without, and it is not a short war. In such a short novel, we see years of action and a well played plot. Honestly looking forward to the next one.
This book is better than the first one in the series. I really enjoyed the world building. It was amazing. I loved the characters. They had such good chemistry together. There was a ton more action. Loved this book. Highly recommend the series.
I enjoyed this novel. It was extremely well written. The characters were super awesome. I loved their chemistry. Highly recommend. The ending was super sweet.
