This book filled me with so much happiness! In a lot of ways it feels reminiscent of adventure time, but a little less on the wacky side. It's filled to the brim with magic and adventure and it's so so so fun!

2023 re-read: just as much fun the second time around! hoping to get to the rest of the series soon.

Miriam is an incredible author and artist, she has talent.

This webtoon is epic, I swear. I'd probably read it all over again (very soon).

It started out so cute and innocent, but then the author took it to another level. I'm glad I read it after it was finished bc the amount of cliffhangers!!

If you're a fan of Harry Potter or anything magic related, really, I recommend this comic for you!

if u listen closely u can hear me sobbing

me wanting to force everyone to read it vs me not wanting to bc if anyone does and doesn't like it i will be devastated and probably in prison for m*rder

i've missed my babies so much and it was such a joy to reread this (now i would sell my soul for the second part hhhh pls). reading it for the first time on webtoons was genuinely one of the best reading experiences i've had my whole life and now rereading it while knowing everything and after such a long time... people cried it's me i'm people.

the art is amazing the story is amazing and impossibly enough it gets even more amazing in the second part of the story (like. OOF.) and the characters.... the characters and their relationships, and i'm not talking romance (EVEN THOUGH!!!!!) but their friendships, as a group and individually, the found familism of it all... the humour, the angst, the wholesomeness.......

im so full of love for them and for miriam, fingers crossed the rest of the story gets published asap too

Yo leyendo Hooky: 😍😱😊🤣🥺

Note: edited because I couldn't quite put my finger on what was bothering me here before, but I thought about it and now I can :).

What an adorable-yet-dark fantasy story about two twelve year old twin witches. No really, this has its dark moments. People actually die, there's quite some horrible stuff going on and it's covered up by this deceptively cute style and the cutesy side-stories. I actually liked how innocent the story started but wasn't afraid to let something seriously messed up hit the fan more and more frequently.

The only big downside of this book is that you can really notice it's a web-comic, or at least it has some downsides of webtoons: it foreshadows some random things and has a general idea of where it's going and its characters, but it doesn't know entirely how or when to deliver that development and story. It doesn't foreshadow or build-up where it matters, doesn't keep pacing and mood in mind. You're constantly mood-whiplashed as a reader.

The pacing of the plot is all over the place and the stories they decide to tell feel almost random at times, making this a very chaotic read. You have this constant double-take moment where you're like "oh, ok, I guess we're doing this now?" as if the author tells you whatever they feel like telling you about the story at that point. The climax/end of this book suffers especially from it, because it builds up to a climax, then suddenly ends without its climax, then does a random fun in-between part and then we suddenly go to a new climax event. The second climax falls a bit short because of the wacky build-up and pacing.

Fortunately the art is pretty much perfect and the characters are fun. The characters are very cutely drawn and have varying lovely personalities. The art is so vibrant and detailed and forms a cohesive piece of artwork on every page, I can only admire it. It's also amazing to me this comic has as many pages as a regular novel, it took me a while to read.

"You’re allowed to make your own decisions. Don’t let yourself be bullied."

Hooky takes you on an unforgettable journey full of magic and cute witches.

The illustrations are bright and colorful. It all really stands out when you are reading the book. They are really eye-catching and you'll find yourself staring at them as your travel from page to page. It was really beautiful.

The story was good but it really jumped a lot. I found myself getting a tad bit confused because of the instant jumping. It had gotten to the point where I thought I skipped a page by accident but it was how the story went.

Hooky was really enjoyable. It had lots of cute moments with some hilarity thrown in. The characters were flawed and I loved that about this book. Usually, Authors want their witches to be perfect and we don't get that here. This author embraced that and it made the story that much more enjoyable.

If you loved the webcomic then you'll love this book.

My first experience with Hooky was with its webcomic form, and though my enjoyment for it fizzled as it progressed, I was quite enchanted with it in the start. So, I looked forward to returning to its beginnings in the new print edition, but this made for a worse reading experience than the original.

Illustration-wise, Hooky is absolutely lovely. Tur’s illustrations are full of charm and bound with detail: the characters look great, the attention to clothing gives each of them their own personality, and the cosy settings are elevated by gorgeous color palettes that make you just want to jump into them. There’s also the neat touch of color-coded speech bubbles, which is distinct for each major character. If there’s any shortcoming to the art, it’s perhaps when it comes to action, as such scenes are not always totally clear in their presentation. But while Tur proves to be a very capable illustrator, she stumbles as a storyteller.

Hooky takes quite its time to find its footing, taking around half of this nearly 400-page book to get going with the plot. Though that itself isn’t an inherent issue, the first half of the series feels rather arbitrarily plotted and stumbles in regards to pacing and tone. For instance, we start with easy-breezy adventures with no real rhyme or rhythm before abruptly having two morbid and extremely traumatising events thrown at us. Hooky then follows this up with fun beach adventures and love potion-making to the backdrop of a bubblegum color palette, as if the previous incidents never happened. It's a very tone-deaf follow up to the previous scene which had Hooky’s attempts to prepare the reader for its foray into darker territory are rather clumsily handled, though it’s also somewhat blunted by the pervading happy tone of the series. Aside from this, some of these early events are not so well-written. For instance, in the very beginning of the series, a character commits theft for no real reason. It’s incredibly out of character and is hardly explained. Since the act serves to set up major plot developments, it feels more like the character was willed by the plot to do this than by their own personal choice. Hooky's second half, in which the plot truly begins, is a more gripping read. Even so, it sets the book a bit off balance as, after a few hundred pages of generally light misadventures, the reader experiences what feels like two crammed in climaxes before an abrupt cutoff point.

As for the setting, the world of Hooky is pretty underdeveloped. The kingdom in which it is set in doesn’t appear to have a name and neither do the towns. Given that the one named location is Floating Rock (which literally is a floating rock), perhaps this was for the better. Magic and spellcasting are similarly vague and feel imported from other popular series. It wouldn’t have been a big deal if Hooky hadn’t centred on magic-related issues, like why one major character's spells always have the opposite effect (which, given its story importance, I’m struggling to understand how no one seemed to notice this before the tale began). As for the central historical conflict, it could have been explored in more detail as it raises its own questions. While the incorporation of famous fairy tales is fun, it makes the forming of Hooky's world feel even more uneasy. It’s hard to really get into the story when I hardly know a thing about the world it's set in.

While I’m glad this new physical edition has given the text a much needed translation update, the actual presentation of the comic is chaotic. The original free-flowing panels of the webcomic have now been shrunken and crammed to fit the pages. This in turn makes the pages feel rather packed, creating a non-stop sequence of crowded and busy pages which lack breathing room. This also undercuts other elements that require space to be effective, like scene transitions or the passage of time. There’s ultimately a real lack of harmony between the images and the arrangement of the panels. Cover pages or page breaks between chapters could have eased this, but none are to be found, so reading Hooky in this format feels like an endless, frantic rush of visual clutter. The panel arrangement also unfortunately neuters the artwork by either shrinking it or having it crowded together with other panels. There are also brief instances of scenes that have been abridged from the original, which, while minor, do cause issues with the sequence of events and add to the overall jerky nature.

All in all, this print form of Hooky is a chaotic read, an issue which was not present at all in the original. Unfortunately, the presentation only exacerbates the aforementioned issues regarding the pacing, tone, and the all over the place nature of the series. While Hooky can generally be fun, reading the series in this new format just makes it feel worse.

The art in this book is attractive, but the writing didn't really work for me. Character motivations were not very clear. Their motivations seemed to change from scene to scene. Also, the dialogue feels like the characters are talking at each other rather than with each other, if that makes sense.

5 stars is not enough to justify my love for this webtoon.

The storyline is amazing. Not a single episode is boring and it just makes me want to keep reading and reading. Every character is loveable and cute and I will definitely miss their adventures.

But the best aspect of this webtoon (imo) is the art! It is beautiful and magical. The details and backgrounds are *chef's kiss*! It makes me want to draw again.

Thank you author for this wonderful story! Will definitely read her future works. Been visiting her ig account for days waiting for her Hooky drawings to sate my Hooky hangover 😭😂

Very cute, anime-style comic about twin witches who play hooky when they miss the bus to magic school on the first day. Witches, mortals, kings, princesses, street urchins, all mingle together as they uncover a mysterious prophecy and a potential plot for world domination. The episodic nature of this meant that some chapters ended very abruptly, or didn't have anything to do with the overarching plot, but overall this was super fun.

He conocido a brujos encantadores. Brujos buenos, amables y pacíficos, brujos absolutamente brillantes. Pero nos juzgáis. Nos teméis. Nos perseguís. Nos quemáis. Siempre igual..."

~💖 Vibes 💖~

One of the many things I love about Hooky is the vibes. This book also has so much personality and quirks and I ADORE it 🫶
Vibes in emojis:
🌷🩵☕️🎀🧹⚔️✨

~🍰 Characters 🍰~

🩵 Dani + Dorian 🩵:

I like Dani. She fits so well in this world: she’s so fun and light hearted, but secretly a badass 😎
Dorian is definitely up there on my favorite characters (probably practically bc I love his character design) but him and Carlo are unstoppable 😌

<3

☕️ Nico + Mark ☕️:

Nico is my favorite of all time 😍 He’s so perfect and pure. I love his sense of adventure and he’s such a free spirit 🫶
I honestly forgot how much I loved Mark, tbh. Him bringing Dani bread pudding every time they met up was so cute 🥰 And she pretends to love it… AGH 🥴

<3

🎀 Monica 🎀:

Pretty little princess here gets her own section 🖕 I REALLY hate Monica. I find her annoying, naive, whiney, and just childish.
She gets a LITTLE better in the third book, but through out the series I just don’t like her. Like, at all👎

~🌷 Spoiler section 🌷~

If you’re planning to read this book, just skip over this part bc I’m basically gonna discuss a few spoiler restated things

<3

~Alex’s death 💔: “Blood for blood, witches.” I have this line memorized. The pure AGONY Míriam was able to display on Alex’s face in her last moment made it feel so real…

~Damien Wytte 🍰: I remember reading this for the first time and my jaw was on the FLOOR when they revealed this. The second book goes into his backstory and let me TELL you 😭

~✨Thank you✨~

A huge thank you to my mom (yes ik my MOM XD) for gifting me a SIGNED COPY 😝 This one of my most prized possessions 💜
To Kinsley, who buddy read this one with me 🫶 She’s super awesome and you should send her a friend request for sure.
To everyone on this app 💖 Tysm for reading through this, liking my reviews, and commenting on my all of my things.

Have a lovely day! 🎀🌷

Two witch twins make friends and learn about their powers while fighting for good against evil in this cute comic/graphic novel. I liked the art, but the story/plot was just okay. To be honest, the story kind of felt chaotic and like it just kept throwing in random things. The underlying plot could have been really interesting, but the author just didn't explore a bigger picture instead of small everyday witch things.

So happy I finally read this! It was incredible! Had such a great time with this. It's a chunky looking graphic novel, but it didn't feel that way, because I flew through it. When Dani & Dorian missed the bus to magic school, they never thought they’d wind up declared traitors to their own kind! Now, thanks to a series of mishaps, they are being chased by powerful magic families seeking the prophesied king of Witches & royals searching for missing princes. But they aren't alone. With a local troublemaker, a princess, & a teacher who can see the future on their side, they might just be able to clear their names... but can they heal their torn kingdom? This was such a witchy, magical, & at times a little dark, amazing story. The art by the author is STUNNING, & brings everything to life beautifully. It's very cutesy to start, then goes darker like I mentioned. Loved it. Great themes of family, friendship, & hating/fearing what we don't understand or anything different. Glad I had book 2 ready to go after that ending, because I dived right into it. Highly recommend!💜

It was so beautiful I read it in two days. The artwork was so pretty and the story was so gripping. The chapters with music added a little extra flare to the whole thing and I just loved it so much

The name of the song in the last chapter is 'The Journey of a Lifetime'. It's a title I feel it earned.

One last ending, that I wasn't prepared to face just yet. Hooky was part of the last wave of Webtoons that I got hit with in the middle of the year, and will be the last one I finish. What I will read, from this point on, I don't know.

After finishing a lot of the other ones a few weeks ago, I had been putting this one off because I couldn't bear parting with several worlds at once. In a way, it felt like it had already ended; the climax had been reached, and I had the impression a lot of the story was just following the final bread crumbs left behind, towards everybody's happy ending. Most of the characters defining moments were in the first half, and after that, it was just a candle slowly burning out in a long, sad goodbye. I don't have much else to add, except that I will miss it. And that Aisha and Carlos are still national treasures.

Goodbye, 2021. Here's to new horizons.

Old review begins below: Webtoons anniversary event, part 7~

Saving the best for almost last! This is one of the few webtoons I'm rating in advance, because I'm already so fascinated by it. I love it!.... It might even dethrone unOrdinary or whatever the other ones are as my new favorite. The only unfortunate thing is that it will take ages to finish, but honestly, I don't mind, since every episode has way more content than I could ever ask from a Webtoon... the longer it lasts, the better :D

At first, I was just a little bemused, since its first few episodes were pretty chaotic; it was a mishmash of random events, fairytale references, and a pretty goofy art style. But once it settled down... oh, it just took off. We're constantly reminded that they're just children; there's a lot of teasing, fast-paced scenes with jokes and little importance (other than to make me SAD), childhood crushes, and petty grudges. Nobody is perfect, and they can often be irrational and rude for reasons that make sense only to themselves. But they're direct; maybe that's the author's style speaking, or maybe it's just because they're young, but it holds nothing back. Usually, reading distracting shenanigans is just annoying to me because it's just stalling from advancing the main story. (Pretty obviously too..) But...

It strikes a great balance between the good times and the bad times. I love fantasy, it's pretty much all I read, so I'm definitely biased, but everything ties together so well. There's a lot of pain they cause each other, and even themselves, because of their decisions, but I can't help but empathize since I can easily see myself doing the same thing. And at the same time, the terrible destiny that chases them the entire time threatens to overthrow all of it. Watching how they cope with it, and hopefully overcome it is something I apprehensively look forward to.

It was almost like watching the Webtoon grow up as its characters did. I think the author herself confessed it started as just a fun doodle, and then grew into something more as she kept drawing them more and more. It's rare to read something that feels as genuine as Hooky does, and if anything bad happens to one of the characters I'd love I'd probably just die on the spot. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten that sidetracked so far, every twist so far has been gripping, and I'm perpetually anxious waiting for something bad to happen that I don't want but know is coming. If you ever have a chance, you should absolutely read Hooky. God, if you've already read it, read it again SLFDKKLSKF it's so packed- wait wow it's sold in print too? hold on a moment
