This graphic novel was absolutely lovely. I haven't read the original version of the book yet, so I can't speak to it as an adaptation, but being brand new to this particular story, I thought this was brilliantly well done. The art was lovely and expressive, serving as a very effective vehicle for such an important story! Dita's circumstances broke my heart just as I knew they would, but I was amazed by how much hope she and some of the other characters held in their hearts. I couldn't imagine being in that position and still having so much heart and fight left in me.

I'm not a big graphic novel reader. This might be the sixth I have read of this genre. i have come, late I admit, to appreciate what these condensed stories have to offer. Those who are hesitant to pick up a 360 page book about a subject, have no such qualms about reading a shorter, graphic novel of the same. Which is what i did here, when the opportunity arose.
I learned about a young and brave girl who loved books. Who read all the time before falling into the evil hands of the Nazis. her name was Dita Kraus and she was fourteen years old. At great danger to herself she took care of and hid the six books that were smuggled into the camp. These six books provided hope and a sense of normality in a situation that was anything but normal. there is of course much more to her story, and graphic novels in the shorter format dont provide all, but enough to elicit admiratioon.

This graphic novel version of The Librarian of Auschwitz handles the topic of the Holocaust in a way that children can approach, but still confronts the brutality of what happened.

Voor het schooltje waren ook boeken noodzakelijk, maar deze waren absoluut verboden in Auschwitz. Dita nam de dappere verantwoordelijkheid op zich om de boeken te verbergen, met gevaar voor eigen leven.
De bibliothecaresse van Auschwitz is een waargebeurd en moedig verhaal dat dankzij de graphic novel nu ook beschikbaar is de jeugd. Het werd een wereld bestseller dat in mijn ogen zeker terecht is, gezien het goed weergegeven maar ook indrukwekkende en ontroerende verhaal van Dita.
De graphic novel is prachtig vormgegeven. De illustraties geven de treurigheid van het verhaal goed weer zonder het té schokkend te maken voor de jeugd. Qua lengte voelt het boek ook goed aan, het geeft namelijk de belangrijkste lijnen van het verhaal weer terwijl het verhaal in no-time uitgelezen is.
De graphic novel editie van de bestseller De bibliothecaresse van Auschwitz is zeker een aanrader en aanwinst voor elke docent of schoolbibliotheek. De illustraties werden gemaakt door Loreto Aroca.

I haven't read the original novel, but this compelling adaptation certainly makes me want to. A harrowing graphic novel that kept me turning the pages, it sheds light on the horrors of war and what prisoners were subjected to. I didn't know about the Theresienstadt Family Camp until this book so it was really informative for me as well.
The characters felt so real (well of course, seeing how they are based on real people) and there were plenty of emotional moments as much as tense ones. I also enjoyed the art and how it made the story even more vivid.
While there could be more 'meat' to some things, it was overall a quick and engaging read that covered its bases. There is lots to learn from this book and for that, I'm grateful.

Dita, as she is called for much of the novel, is living with her parents in Czechoslovakia when WWII starts. Eventually the family is restricted in movement and then deported. Once in Auschwitz, Dita becomes a librarian helping out with lending books out to people, a form of resistance.
Rubio and Aroca do an excellent job of illustrating what life was before the war and the horrors of what Dita and her family went though. What’s more, the camp section of the story – the largest section of the story – details more than just Dita’s experiences. They illustrate other groups that were in Auschwitz, including homosexuals.
While the novel does not downplay the violence and horror, it is presented in a way that is acceptable for children.
Highly recommended.

I have a group of older readers at my primary school who have shown an interest in Holocaust stories recently. There are some wonderful stories for 11+ that capture the horror of that time but also the hope. Having just finished this graphic novel I’m not sure about having it in my collection. There’s a difference between reading a description in a novel about the atrocities and reading a graphic novel which visualises those. There are some pretty scary visuals in the story that I’m not sure some kids would be ready for. I’d also be worried about younger kids stumbling across this book in the graphic novel collection.
Overall I thought the illustrations were stylistically appropriate for the story that is told and there is hope amongst the horrors. It did feel too short for the subject matter that it covers, but the author does suggest reading the original story that inspired the graphic novel retelling.

Beautifully illustrated, a very poignant way to tell this story, although it did feel rushed. Reading the notes at the end, and realizing that they had condensed a four hundred page novel into a graphic novel a third of the length, I feel like they did a good job of getting the meat of the story onto the page.

Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes ( much like anything published about the happenings at Auschwitz) this graphic novel is very creatively crafted.
The story is built around a little girl who has a great love for reading and languages. Her parents are very loving and try to shield her from the difficulties they face until the Occupation when her Father loses his job. And she is unaware of these happenings. They are carted off to the concentration camp but with her good behaviour and her knowledge of languages she is selected to teach the actors for a play that enacted to regale the soldiers. Unfortunately these actors would be killed soon after the play.
In due course she gets selected to manage a small library in the camp ( in hiding of course ). Joseph Mengele is shown in the graphic novel and is as horrible as we know him to be. He somehow lets her out his radar and when the war ends she is relieved to be free. Her Father unfortunately falls ill and dies while in the camp.
It’s an eminently re readable novel given the wonderful illustrations that add to the moving storyline.

Dit boek. Wauw. Dit moet echt verplichte kost worden op scholen.
Het is perfect voor jeugd, maar ook zeker indrukwekkend voor ouderen. Een graphic novel over een andere kant van de welbekende Tweede Wereldoorlog. Over een meisje dat Auschwitz op een andere manier meemaakt dan de meeste mensen het kennen. Er was namelijk heel veel schone schijn in het concentratiekamp. En ik denk dat niet veel jongeren (en volwassenen) die kant kennen.
Er komen zo veel aspecten van de oorlog aan bod; van de opkomst van de oorlog, het feit dat Joden steeds minder mogen, de verplaatsing van duizenden Joden en de verschillen tussen de verschillende kampen, maar ook het leven na de bevrijding. Want waren ze echt wel direct vrij toen (het antwoord is nee natuurlijk). Ik denk dat het daarom ook echt een enorm veelzijdig boek is. Juist omdat je uit al die aspecten weer meer verhalen kunt trekken. En lezers kan laten interesseren voor die andere verhalen.
Ik leer elke dag nog steeds wat bij over de Tweede Wereldoorlog en ik hoop nog jaren meer te kunnen blijven leren. Wat een geweldige aanwinst is deze graphic novel voor het oorlogsgenre qua boeken.

Ik lees nooit zo vaak graphic novels, maar misschien moet ik dat vaker gaan doen. Dit is zo’n mooi, ontroerend en interessant boek! Het is een waargebeurd verhaal wat het voor mij veel indrukwekkender maakt. In korte tijd leer je ontzettend veel over de oorlog, Auschwitz en de uitroeiing van joden. De illustraties zijn prachtig! Echt een aanrader!

While at times a little too "novel-y" (and not in a good way), LIBRARIAN is still an important and compelling graphic novel. I was surprised to learn at the book's conclusion that the MC was based upon a real person. I think WHITE BIRD explored this topic more successfully in the YA graphic novel format, but this title is also recommended.

Je n'ai pas lu le livre qui m'avait pourtant été chaudement recommandé, j'avais trop peur de la charge émotionnelle liée au thème. La lecture de ce roman graphique m'en a offert un brau résumé sans me tirer de larmes.
Il raconte l'histoire vraie d'une jeune fille de 14 ans, Dita, qui se retrouve avec ses parents dans le camp d'Auschwitz. Contrairement aux autres prisonniers, elle est mise les premiers temps dans une partie du camp "vitrine" où elle peut conserver ses habits et cheveux. On lui confie le rôle secret de bibliothécaire avec 8 malheureux livres à faire circuler sous le manteau + les livres "vivants".

Totalmente recomendable, una novela gráfica que emana sentimiento y que te hace desear darle una oportunidad al libro en el que se basa. No esperaba que la historia de Dita, una de las supervivientes del Holocausto nazi, consiguiera despertarme tantas emociones. Sin duda, es una de esas obras que todavía hoy en día te hacen pensar en la crueldad que puede imperar en una sociedad cuando se emprenden acciones deleznables.
Conocemos a Dita cuando tiene 14 años y ve que su mundo se empieza a desmoronar. La llegada de los nazis a Checoslovaquia y sus acciones para someter a los judíos harán que pase de tener una infancia normal a acabar en el infierno. Al igual que muchas otras personas, ella y sus padres son obligados a portar marcas que les señalan como judíos y se ven sumergidos en una situación de terror e incertidumbre. El futuro es incierto e intentar sobrevivir cada día es el único plan que se puede tener. Tras ser obligados a vivir en un gueto, acaban siendo trasladados a Auschwitz. Y nada volverá a ser igual. Aunque no entienden muy bien el motivo, Dita y su madre acaban en un barracón en el que las condiciones son ligeramente menos deplorables que en los demás. Y es ahí donde su amor por los libros la ayudará a convertirse en la bibliotecaria de Auschwitz...
La lectura te mantiene en vilo en todo momento y, a pesar de que Dita es prácticamente una niña, su relato no es infantil. Tiene cierta inocencia que es acorde a su edad y a sus circunstancias, pero se va viendo cómo se ve obligada a madurar a la fuerza y a hacer frente a la tragedia, a la muerte, a la búsqueda de la esperanza cuando todo parece perdido, al miedo a confiar en la persona inadecuada, etc. Lo de su papel como bibliotecaria en medio de tanta desolación es un pequeño detalle dentro de la trama, algo que le da un toque de ternura a un lugar lleno de oscuridad.
Os encariñaréis con Dita y no podréis evitar querer descubrir qué será de ella y de muchas de las personas con las que se cruza. Lo único que me faltó fue adentrarnos mejor en determinados acontecimientos, aunque puedo entender que era complicado condensar tantas cosas en una novela gráfica.
Las ilustraciones son magníficas: bien definidas, correctamente humanizadas, con tonalidades que van variando dependiendo de la sensación o sentimiento que pretende transmitir cada viñeta. Además, es innegable que saben mantener el equilibro entre ser sutiles y ser realistas en los instantes de más crudeza. Un trabajo de 10, no puedo calificar de otro modo a la parte artística.
La puntuación real sería un 4,5/5. No redondeo al alza por los pequeños detalles que me hicieron sentir que había aspectos tanto de Auschwitz como de la propia historia de Dita que no estaban tratados con suficiente profundidad. Tengo claro que me lanzaré con el libro para ver si es tan especial como la novela gráfica.

Ik heb het originele boek niet gelezen, maar door deze graphic novel wil ik dat nu wel.
We volgen het verhaal van Dita, hoe zij als 14 jarige wordt opgepakt door de Duitsers en naar verschillende kampen wordt vervoerd. Daar waar ze het langst zit, Auschwitz, draait het verhaal om. Ze wordt hier de bibliothecaresse omdat ze gek is op lezen. Een uiterst gevaarlijk beroep, aangezien boeken verboden zijn.
De illustraties zijn prachtig weergegeven en tonen de gruwelheden. Wanneer er momenten van hoop zijn, zijn de illustraties lichter en kleurrijker, en wanneer de daden en mensen te afschuwelijk voor woorden zijn, worden de illustraties donkerder. Het is interessant om meer te lezen over dit familiekamp van Auschwitz. Ik wist er al wel het een en ander over, maar dit boek schijnt er weer een nieuw licht op. Zelfs op het einde wordt er meer over verteld en dat vond ik erg prettig.
Het boek leest erg snel, en ook al had ik soms het idee dat het iets te snel ging, ben ik nu toch wel van mening dat het goed zo is. We worden er als lezer van een afstandje wel mee geconfronteerd, maar het blijft acceptabel voor kinderen. Het geweld en de horror worden niet gebagatelliseerd, maar het wordt toegankelijk gerepresenteerd.
Een ontzettende aanrader om dit boek te lezen. Het is emotioneel, hoopvol, gruwelijk en krachtig. Ik heb op bepaalde momenten mijn tranen de vrije loop laten gaan om alle mensen die we zijn verloren. Het is zo ontzettend belangrijk dat zulke boeken uitgegeven worden en dat het verhaal van de slachtoffers en de overlevenden verteld blijft worden. Op dat we nooit mogen vergeten.

We volgen het verhaal van Dita, hoe zij als 14 jarige wordt opgepakt door de Duitsers en naar verschillende kampen wordt vervoerd. Daar waar ze het langst zit, Auschwitz, draait het verhaal om. Ze wordt hier de bibliothecaresse omdat ze gek is op lezen. Een uiterst gevaarlijk beroep, aangezien boeken verboden zijn.

les dessins étaient fous. les textes complémentaires à la fin permettent d'avoir + d'infos sur l'adaptation à l'ouvrage (qui n'est pas très très réaliste mais très intéressante à lire), sur le contexte et le passé. ça permet d'avoir une vision différente de la déportation des juifs & des camps de concentration

Dit vond ik best wel heftig. Ik dacht dat de impact van een verhaal over de Tweede Wereldoorlog wel minder zou zijn, omdat het een graphic novel is. Niets was minder waar. Wellicht lees ik nog de roman waarop dit is gebaseerd, maar voor nu kan ik deze zeker aanraden.

Wat een ongelooflijk mooi verhaal. Ik ben enorm blij dat ook dit verhaal er in graphic novel is, net als Het Achterhuis. Want ik zie het echt in de winkel, kinderen pakken dit zelf omdat het de interesse prikkelt, deze vertelvorm. Door die in te zetten ook voor dit soort verhalen, zorgen we er met z'n allen voor dat deze verhalen verteld blijven worden, niet vergeten worden.

Ik heb het originele boek niet gelezen, maar ik vind dat deze graphic novel het verhaal van Dita erg toegankelijk heeft gemaakt. Natuurlijk is deze graphic novel een stuk korter dan het boek zelf, maar dat maakte het verhaal er niet minder heftig op.

De graphic novel ‘De bibliothecaresse van Auschwitz’ is gebaseerd op de bestseller van Antonio Iturbe. In dit boek wordt het waargebeurde verhaal van Dita Kraus verteld. Zij overleefde tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog namelijk het concentratiekamp Auschwitz. Dita had een bijzondere rol in het concentratiekamp want ze was namelijk bibliothecaresse. Dit was erg gevaarlijk omdat boeken streng verboden waren.
De illustraties in het verhaal zijn prachtig. De gevoelens van de personages kan je aflezen van hun gezichtsuitdrukkingen. Ook de gruwelijke taferelen die zich afspeelden in het kamp komen aan bod. Niets wordt uit de weg gegaan om een zo realistisch mogelijk beeld te vormen van het concentratiekamp. Toch zijn deze niet te expliciet waardoor het boek zeker toegankelijk is voor lezers vanaf 13 jaar.
De epiloog bevat nog wat extra informatie over de personages. De personen die in het boek aan bod komen, hebben echt bestaan. Zo krijg je een inkijk op het leven van Uta, Fredy Hirsch en Josef Mengele.
Het boek kan zeker gebruikt worden op school. Denk hierbij aan de vakken geschiedenis, Nederlands maar ook beeld.

I loved reading comics as a kid and I wasn't above reading a Classic Comic or two or maybe more instead of the book the comic was based on. In school, I was an undiagnosed dyslexic and reading was sometimes difficult. So it stands to reason that as an adult and a teacher, I'm a big fan of books done in graphic format. They are just what some readers need instead of a large and for them, for whatever reasons, unwieldy novel. And for others, they are just a fun way to read. But, the graphic needs to be well done, and in today's world, most of the time, they are. Which is why is pains me to say that I did not like The Librarian of Auschwitz: The Graphic Novel.
This graphic novel is the same story as the novel by the same name and written by Antonio Iturbe, so I'm not going to summarize it again. Suffice it to say it is the story of teenage Dita Adlerova, who was first sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia with her parents and other Jews, and who were all later transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau. There, they were living in a separate area of Birkenau, called BIIb and referred to as the Theresienstadt Family Camp. These Jewish prisoners were allowed to keep their clothing and their hair wasn't shaved, though living conditions were still as deplorable as in other parts of Auschwitz. If you haven't read the novel, you can read what I originally wrote HERE. The novel is a big book but one that is totally worth spending time with, IMHO.
Back to the graphic. First, let me begin by saying I did like the art. I found the full color cells were clearly and cleanly drawn in such a way that it was easy to follow the story. The illustrator did a great job at capturing the full range of intense emotions felt by the prisoners of Auschwitz as well as the hate and disgust exhibited by their Nazi captors. Interestingly, none of the characters, Jewish, gay, or Nazi, were portrayed as stereotypical.
And it wasn't so much that I found the graphic novel to be bad, just lacking. I read the novel back in 2017 and so I'd forgotten some details. Reading the graphic, I found myself confused about a few of the things that went on in Auschwitz and that impacted the main character, Dita, personally. I also didn't feel the importance of the eight books that made up the library was made plain, and how Dita so lovingly cared for them, nor did I feel the reverence with which the borrowers of these books felt for them.
Some of the characters, like Dita and Fredy Hirsch, as based on the actual people, and of course, so are some of the Nazis like Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele, known as the Angel of Death for his experiments of the prisoners in Auschwitz. There is a great epilogue at the end of the book that does go into detail not just about what happened and the people involved.
Ultimately, though, I found this version of The Librarian of Auschwitz to be simplistic and a little stiff. I realize that taking a large novel and synthesizing it down to just 144 pages is not easy task and this was a valiant effort. It just didn't work for me.

As I read in the epilogue this graphic novel which is based off the novel is to get you to read the novel. And I'm very interested in reading the novel now.
There were so many mature and graphic themes as you would expect. This is an important book for young adults to get them aware and ready for novels that describe how young people like them survived and persevered against all odds.
I want to read the book to learn more about this decoy family camp that she lived in. I will say the comment that Mengele said was so horrifying and it's not the worst of what they did and there were images that would need to be explained cause gassing and mass genocide seem like content for fiction not real life. I saw documentaries and read books in school but it hurt to know that this was happening and that this is what we can do to each other cause we don't practice the same religion or look the same.

PT Depois de ler "O Fotógrafo de Mauthausen", também de Salva Rubio, há alguns meses, tinha uma boa ideia do que esperar aqui. As atrocidades cometidas pela Alemanha Nazi parecem ser um tema recorrente de interesse para ele — e também para mim.
Esta história, baseada em factos reais, segue uma sobrevivente de Auschwitz que manteve a sua paixão pelos livros mesmo nos seus momentos mais sombrios.
Apesar do tema pesado, esta é uma das leituras menos pesadas que encontrei sobre o assunto. O foco não recai excessivamente sobre as atrocidades, embora a sua presença ainda se faça sentir.
Uma leitura obrigatória para quem tem interesse neste período da história.

GB After reading "The Photographer of Mauthausen" by Salva Rubio a few months ago, I had a good idea of what to expect here. The atrocities committed by Nazi Germany seem to be a recurring subject of interest for him — and for me as well.
This story, based on real events, follows an Auschwitz survivor who held onto her passion for books even in her darkest hour.
Despite the heavy subject matter, this is one of the lighter reads I’ve encountered on the topic. The focus isn’t overwhelmingly on the atrocities, though their presence is still felt.
A must-read for anyone interested in this period of history.

Like all stories of the Holocaust, this one is horrifying. I'm not sure I agree with the idea of presenting any of the Holocaust as being even mildly palatable. Though this is based on a true story I think the authors tidied up some of it for the age range. But it is inconsistent in content and this would probably not be appropriate for children ages 8-12. The graphics alone would keep it out of most school libraries.
So I have very mixed feelings about this graphic novel. I think it could be read along with Night and used to provoke discussion. But any novel that presents even the slightest positivity regarding the Holocaust is dangerous in this current climate.
I appreciate what the authors tried to do and it is possible that the story line lost something in translation. But I simply could not recommend this to children to read, even with a parent.

The librarian of Auschwitz is based on the experience of real-life Auschwitz prisoner 14 year old Dita Kraus, who risked her life to keep the magic of books alive during the holocaust.
I highly recommend this book, it is the story of Dita Kraus but It is also a story of survival. This book has shown how books can be a little beacon of Hope and escape from an awful situation.
The art of the graphic novel is very beautiful and emotive although I am not very satisfied with the way the story was adapted in some parts. But overall it was an amazing read.

As a summarized version of the novel, it did incredibly well at introducing some really complex characters and stories that have me immediately adding the full length to my TBR.
As a stand-alone graphic novel it recounts a harrowing experience of Dita and her family being taken from their home. And how she had to risk everything just to build some semblance of hope; some semblance of forgetting that they were in hell, even if just for a few minutes.
