NOWHERE LEFT TO RUNALEX KAYNE never stops running.
It’s just who she is.
But when Kayne looks into a series of patent thefts that lead her to billionaire technologist ROSS ECKHART, she finds herself running out of road. Is Eckhart who he appears to be?
AGENT ERIC SYMON is dealing with his new duties and responsibilities, as a member of the HISTORIC CRIMES UNIT. And finding himself working under AGENT ROLAND DENZEL—the man that Symon holds responsible for derailing his FBI career—is making the job tough to handle.
In pursuit of a stolen piece of art, hidden on an exotic animal ranch in Oklahoma, Symon finds himself facing down more than career challenges.
This could be the fight of his life.
And when these two cases collide, the aftershock will change everything for Kayne, Symon, and Historic Crimes itself.
Kevin Tumlinson is a thriller and speculative fiction author traveling the U.S. with his wife, an RV, a chihuahua named Mini, and a fully-loaded laptop. He writes multi-million-dollar blockbusters that can be read for only a few bucks.
Kevin grew up in Wild Peach Texas—an actual village wedged between the Brazos and San Bernard Rivers, with a population of less than 2,500 people and seemingly not a peach tree within a hundred miles of the place. He has had an eclectic career that includes engineering, teaching, broadcasting and media, and marketing. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards for writing, public speaking, and his work in advertising and marketing.
At the moment, Kevin—along with his wife and his dog—are traveling full-time in an RV, exploring the US as Kevin writes and promotes his books. The inside joke is that they are going on the worlds most far-ranging house hunt. They're only half joking.

Alex Cane has been running for such a long time. Framed for the murder of her business partner and treason against her own government, her only choice was to run. She had the talent and resources to become a new person and live free for the rest of her life. If she did that, she would feel too much like all those who could have helped her & didn’t bother. There was too much injustice in the world-when she found others, like herself, abandoned by all those who should help but chose to just ignore things, she would act. It was her purpose in life, besides staying ahead of everyone from criminals to the FBI. All good things eventually end. She begins to trust someone. It is such a foreign feeling, are there really others in the world who also really care & want to help? What would it be like to have a vacation from the constant fear of capture? So many important questions, so few to seek trustworthy answers from. Another great read, couldn’t put it down until the end!
Once again Tumlinson joins the fictional Alex Kayne to current events and culture in the U.S. By weaving the memorable ice storm that devastated Texas into the story of the central character's adventure, it connects the fictiional story to real places and real events seen on news networks. The author, a native Texan, also pulls real stories about Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, maybe Warren Buffet, etc., from the news, applying these personalities and events fictional characters in the story. This adds to the entertainment in reading a story that has recognizable places and characters. In the Alex Kayne series there has always been a "client" that Alex interacts with, except this time the client is never approached and that person, whose injustice is ultimately resolved, is overshadowed by much larger events that unfold from Alex's pursuit for truth and justice. Not as much physical confrontation this time and more introspection by the characters. The story leads to crises in the lives of the main characters and the surprising ending opens the way for new, personal paths to be taken. The book is another good chapter in the continuing saga of Alex Kayne.
Patents Stolen and Bragging About Stolen Art on Netflix?
Alex Kayne's latest "client" she's decided to help is a talented and prolific designer for an electric auto maker. This designer's problem is that her patents are bought for good money (on paper) but she's gotten ZIP and three years later is working at a call center for minimum wage.
The billionaire who bought the smaller auto company thinks the bought-out patent-holders got the negotiated buyouts. An administrative aid and head of security have a side hustle going on this.
Then there's the lifetime criminal who has a Netflix special with a multi-million dollar painting on display in the background while he brags on camera of many of his many exploits. Really? Can they come any stupider? Naturally, this special catches the eye of the FBI's Historical Crimes Unit, which ends in a raid on the crime boss's home. The boss, Connor, is livid, of course, that he's lost millions during the raid. His response? Kill the FBI agents who took his stuff. Alex witnesses the hit on Eric Symon and is instrumental in saving his life.
There's more but I don't want to spoil it for those who want to read this one.
Fugitive Alex Kayne, (aka the eponymous Quake Runner) in Kevin Tumlinson's Aftershock, reminds me of Sophie Ang in Emily Kimelman's 'Wired' series...which is a good thing when it comes to unsung vigilante, crime-fighting heroines...as both have ultra hi-tech systems, (QuIEK and DAVID respectively) that they use to help others and protect themselves.
This time Alex is faced by a potential rival to QuIEK, though the billionaire tech magnate seemingly has nothing like her altruistic modus operandi.
When she uses it to gain entry to Eckhart's HQ, has Alex bitten off more than she can chew, so to speak?
What's really going on, unknown to the entrepreneur?
Kevin Tumlinson is an expert at writing action-thrillers, and even includes references to Dan Kotler, Agent Denzel and Liz Ludlum from his other excellent series, in Aftershock, Book 4 of his riveting Quake Runner series, as well as backstories for Alex, Payton and Eckhart, to pique the reader's interest even more.
An Alex Kane thriller to be sure but with a twist. Kevin Tumlinson has done a great job (as usual) with this Quake Runner story/continuation of the saga of Alex Kane. She's been on the run for a long time after being framed for crimes she didn't commit. Alex has a certain "Robin Hood" trait about her as she looks for folks who have been wronged & then goes out of her way to right the wrong. In this latest tale, we see more of her inner struggles & turmoils as she questions continuing on the run. Things come to a head when her "friend" (could there be more here down the road) is shot & almost killed. No spoilers here; you'll have to read the book to see all the twists & turns & I highly recommend that you do so. It's a great book.
With Aftershock, Historic Crimes and it’s agents with Alex Kayne are pursuing two different cases. The bad guys are doubled, and the pursuit complicated.
It’s time for the characters to fess up to their place in the agency, their relationships and futures.
So if there’s less outright chasing, and more techno-geeking, you’ll find Aftershock just as compelling as the rest of the series. And yes, they get the bad guys, but at what personal costs?
I really, really hate finishing an Alex Kayne book. Especially when there are no more in the series (at the moment). Alex is still my favorite character in ay media (hope there is a movie under discussion). Ross Eckhart was a very interesting new character...hope he reappears in a future book. There must be future books Mr. Tumlinson. Kayne's commitment to Agent Symon was very moving, can't wait to see how that turns out. Bring on the next book.
Alex is running again, anything for her clients. The author put a few new wrinkles in. It will get you on the edge of your seat. You won't be able to guess the ending, it's great!
I’ve really enjoyed the whole series!! I hope there is someone out there like Alex Kayne….we could use a lot more like that in this world!! Someone to give us hope!! I look forward to more of Alex!!
I must say, I did not see the end of the book finishing in this way - what a thrilling ride. According to the author, now we get to see what Alex Kayne can do as a full fledged member of "Historic Crimes Unit". Can't wait to read where the author will take us next.
I had my hair rising and falling all through the book. Of course, Alex would not give up the Quake. Not ever. I'm waiting restless for the next. Monica Beltrami. Montevideo, Uruguay.
Seems most everyone in this book was doing some soul searching of one kind or another. Doesn’t make for the most scintillating reading, but not the worst either.
The editing/proofreading was better in this book. I think I caught only one error.
What a fun read, with lots of twists , turns, and flips, with a blockbuster surprise ending! Sure to please most anyone following, and whet the inspiration to wait with bated breath for the next book!
If you enjoy thrillers or just a great book, you can't go wrong with anything written by Kevin Tumlinson. I've read them all and I'm never disappointed.
As Alex Kayne continues to evolve, Kevin Tumlinson makes the journey so interesting and compelling you find yourself chafing for her next adventures immediately!
