Ta książka wzbudza we mnie bardzo mieszane uczucia. Z jednej strony świetna tematyka, mnóstwo ciekawostek o wierzeniach z całego świata, natomiast z drugiej strony temu wszystkiemu towarzyszy chaos i wyczuwalny brak wyczerpania tematu.

Podobała mi się, autorka przedstawiła wierzenia wielu kultur. Jest to pojemne kompendium wiedzy z najróżniejszych zakątków świata. Przyznaję, że robiłam sporo notatek by informacje z tej książki mi się nie zgubiły.

When I saw the cover of this book and its title, I must admit that I was very intrigued. The graphics are really unusual and contain elements associated with many cultures. On the other hand, the title and the description on the back cover aroused curiosity to get to know the "real" magic, not the kind taken out of the fantasy world, but the kind in which real, living people believed and maybe still believe.
The author, Katarzyna Maniszewska, is a journalist and traveller who, according to the insert to the book, deals not only with experiencing cultures that are little known to the average mortal, but above all with the subject of ... terrorism.
"Oblicza Magii" is a book in which the author lists and compares various beliefs that she has encountered, or read about, but she could compare them with the first ones. It is divided into chapters that categorize the described content so that when we are interested in only one of the topics described, we can easily reach it and focus on it. The number of described beliefs and rituals is really large, but unfortunately, only a small fraction is accurately described. I understand that elaborating on each would make the book several volumes long and that the author only focused on what she could describe first-hand, but I was still very unsatisfied when the mentioned topic was not developed. Additionally, the form in which they are presented is quite disappointing. And here begin the shortcomings of the book, which I consider quite serious and significantly affect my rating of this position.
First of all, the beliefs described in the vast majority are listed, just like that, enumerated with a comma. It looks downright crude and made me feel like I was reading a not-so-successful student paper. Secondly, Katarzyna's approach to the described cultures can be disrespectful, which makes me automatically dislike her. I would expect from an educated and familiar with the wide world person objectivity and greater openness to the unknown. The author seemed to treat the people she met as if as lesser human beings. It is sad to read such accounts because they remind me of a rather controversial traveller, whom everyone probably knows, Wojciech Cejrowski. I agree that some rituals can be shocking to a person not familiar with the local customs, and I would suffer myself watching animals suffer because of unjustified beliefs. But this does not give me the right to talk about a culture I don't understand in a mocking way. The author herself describes how many Europeans still believe in superstitions such as talismans, but how does such a talisman differ from a Christian relic or medal? It's just that someone believes it or not.
To sum up, while I learned a lot of new things, I didn't like the way this knowledge was presented. Due to the superficial presentation of a lot of information, I will simply quickly forget it. At this point, even as I write these words, a week after finishing reading, I remember maybe 5-10% of the examples cited. However, the author's approach left a bad impression.
P.S. I will only add that a certain upside is the sources given at the end of the book, thanks to which people interested in the subject can expand their knowledge, and you can also verify the authenticity of the author's account.

Książka napisana w cudowny i przystępny sposób. Generalnie wspaniały dokument ale także skarbnica wiedzy o innych kulturach i magii w nich występującej. Jednakże autorka momentami wyśmiewa wyznawców, szydzi z nich i widać ,iż niestety czuję się lepsza od nich, bo nie wierzy jak to ona uznaje "w zabobony".

Pozycja może być ciekawa dla kogoś kto nie miał wcześniej doczynienia z tematem, ale jeśli ktoś wierzeniami, czy magią interesuje to raczej niewiele z tej książki wyciągnie.

Zaskakująco dobrze się czytało tą lekturę. Przekrój przez różne wierzenia bez zbędnego mistycyzmu. Nie czułam się przytłoczona, a jednocześnie pozostał lekki niedosyt i chęć dalszych poszukiwań.
