Fated Crossing

Rate this book
One lost city. Two separated realms.

History tells of a time when humans and fae lived together peacefully, but conflict drove the fae to abandon this world.

Or so it’s been told.

When twenty-four-year-old Grace Helden stumbles into the fae realm, she finds herself brought before King Niethal Grager, one of five ruling fae monarchs. Charmed by his generosity and affection, Grace soon realizes every moment spent with Niethal is dangerous, not for the risk of being trapped in the fae realm, but for the risk to her heart. With Grace by his side, Niethal intends to restore the fae to their former glory, even if it jeopardizes the fabric of their world.

There is one who stands against Niethal. Prince Isiah Thorne suspects Niethal’s plot could place Grace in grave danger, and when it’s discovered she possesses ancient magic, Isiah knows he must protect her and their bond at any cost.

Torn between a powerful king who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and the male fated to her, Grace must choose: prevent the borders between realms from falling or shatter them as commanded. But to break such magic requires a sacrifice...

The answer is in the blood.

Some SPOILERS. If you haven’t read the book.

I started following this author on tik tok after seeing some of their videos with snippets from the book. There was a specific video that I was excited to read in the book and once I got to that chapter I was SO MAD. The tik tok video was better. Obviously the snippets caught my attention and I had to start reading as soon as the book was available on KU. Soooooo disappointed. I was so excited when I was watching the videos I should’ve known better. This isn’t the first-and definitely won’t be the last-time I get bamboozled into reading a book I saw on tik tok and being EXTREMELY disappointed by the actual book. Usually when I realize I’m not going to like a book I just skim the pages so I can finish faster but because I was so excited to read it I tried to take my time. I took the whole book in and could care less. Really wanted to love it and here are some reasons why I DID NOT.

King Niethal. There was literally no seductive quality to him. She’s supposed to be attracted to him instantly somehow and he’s supposed to be all “sexy, mysterious king” but he’s just flat.

14% into the book and SHES IN DEEP. Like how?

I don’t know if it’s the writing or just the characters but they’re boring. I’m obviously reading the emotions they’re feeling but I don’t FEEL them. I’m just staring at the words not feeling anything or even able to imagine the characters. It’s like as they’re talking I’m just seeing stick figures.

Saying Thank you to someone means you owe them a debt. This could have been really interesting I guess but it’s not. She literally owes everyone she talks to a debt. if you tell a fae thank you, you owe them a debt?

To summarize my unnecessary and long review. Read the book. You decide of you like it or not, it wasn’t my cup of tea so I jumped to the end and was bummed.

I feel like this book had so much potential. It was one of most anticipated reads of the month but I was pretty disappointed with the way it was executed. I found the pacing of the storyline to be very choppy and inconsistent. The world-building was ok, but the lore and historical aspects of the story could’ve been fleshed out even more.

A lot of the FMC’s decisions seemed incredibly juvenile given she was an adult. She fell too quickly for the villain character for it to be believable, and it felt very forced to me and was really just for the sake of the storyline and creating tension. The MMC on the other hand was likeable and the redeeming aspect of the story, along with his found family.

The cliffhanger was incredibly confusing and unfulfilling, I won’t be coming back for the next book unfortunately.

This novel was just okay. The characters are interesting, but the story/plotline feels disjointed, many times the plot raced ahead and then fell stagnant for longer. I was disappointed in the level of cliffhanger that occurred and the amount of questions the reader was left with.

I liked that it was short. Was not a fan of the characters, pretty much any of them. King N felt sleezy from page one and I did NOT get her appeal in him at any moment, I liked his POV tho unlike some comments that I read.

This book was so… bad. If you prefer a really fast paced book that leaves you with more questions than not and is so cheesy and cringey, this is the book for you.

I was very lucky and incredibly honoured to receive an ARC copy of Fated Crossing by Michelle Rose. I have followed her updates on TikTok for a while now and to receive an ARC copy is truely an honour.

Now it’s been a while since I’ve done a review for a novel (talking 10+ years), and I’ll try to leave it spoiler free but apologies in advance if some slip through, please bear with!

Fated Crossing has got to be, by far, one of the best debut novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I give it 4.5/5⭐️‘s!

This novel is such an easy read, I loved the different POV’s between Grace and Isiah, and how it lapsed between the two; getting an accurate understanding of the emotions from the two of them during instances they experience together really helped gain an emotional understanding of them both.

The already established relationships throughout the novel with side characters was sometimes too cute to handle and left me with many many butterflies on occasion, but still had some hidden surprises along the way!

The characters were written so well, that even if you could see the red flags, if you could hear the warning bells, you WANTED to like them, you WANTED to ignore the signs hoping that, maybe, just MAYBE, you’re reading into them too much… only to be slapped in the face with a “Ne ner ne ner I told you so” and a specially tailored clown hat made for you for falling into that careful trap.

However (and I hate adding this in because it is such a good book!), I did find it to be a little fast. A lot happens in a short amount of time. Some extra historical background of the kingdoms, the lineage, exploring more of the bond, why the war occurred in the first place, or even more background details on the strain between two specific kingdoms would of been a great addition and how it would/could relate to our MC’s as well as allowing more time for relationships to bloom between characters would’ve been a great addition to the novel.

That aside… THAT ENDING?!!!!?! EXCUSE ME BUT WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION?!! Where on earth did you find the AUDACITY to leave me HANGING like that?!!! I should’ve seen the Easter eggs from the start but I was too damn busy chasing the bunny to notice how nicely they were hidden!

I love love LOVED this book, and I am so super proud of all your efforts to get to this stage!!! So super duper proud of you!!!!

I hope you’ve almost finished book two already! I’m eagerly awaiting more tiktok updates about book two!

This ARC review is the opinion of just one reader who received a copy of Fated Crossing in exchange for an honest review.

The opening two chapters made my heart sing. The Juxtaposition and Parallelism that exists really drew me deeper into the story. By 25% of the way through, I was engrossed and hooked. 26% had me screaming about how the intricacies of this novel were amazing. 50% had me jumping up and down in excitement. 86% of the way through had me wondering if there was a cliff hanger (I knew of a specific part of the book because of her TikTok’s and was really hoping we make it through that before the end - Time Saver - you will, but there is a small cliff hanger.) Part of the story wraps up nicely by the end, but the writing is so incredible that you want to keep reading more. This book is gripping and amazing from start to finish. It’s a fluid piece of writing that lends towards the enchanting story line full of Fae and destined lovers, epic battles and the fire within.

To say I enjoyed this debut novel from Michelle Rose would be a true and utter understatement. This book is a work of art, in fact I would consider a masterpiece. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who is a fan of reading!

A story of a Fae ancestor, Grace, who is brought to the Fae realm in an attempt by one of the four kings to break a binding on a lost Fae city. Grace develops her fire Magic and is then bullied into sacrificing her life by Niethal in order for him to access the locked away relics and specifically the moonstone.

If you love the classic protective mate tropes, then you may enjoy this book. It’s told from several POVs, mostly the main characters or Grace and Isiah. As a general rule, I like that type of writing style, as it gives insight and perspective from each character.

I wasn’t a fan of Grace’s character. I thought she was naive to the point of painful, and easily manipulated by any male. This showed in the amount of times she fell into Niethal’s arms despite her acknowledged feelings for Isiah. There were times that Niethal made me feel a bit icky, and it was frustrating that Grace couldn’t see through him.

The story itself seemed to move very fast, which hindered any actual world building and lead up to the conflicts. I would have liked to see some more building of the relationships between Grace and Isiah, but also amongst the “brothers” and Grace.

No connection

I wanted to like this so bad but, I just couldn’t connect to any character. There wasn’t enough development at the beginning of the book to really get invested, everything moved too fast and left me mostly confused and/or uninterested. It certainly has potential, and I’ll continue to read more from this author, but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me!

If you enjoy more YA-style fantasy (this does have a bit of spice), forbidden love, and fated mates, I think you would enjoy this quick read. Even though I gave this 4 stars, I do feel like it was often rushed and lacked the major world-building element that I normally enjoy. The author’s writing style kept me captivated and allowed me to connect easily with the main characters. I actually really enjoy Grace and feel like her naivety is justified in many things and love Isiah as our typical male fae. I am a sucker for a cheesy romance every now and then, and this book has that with some of the typical “romantasy” elements you find in similar reads. Overall, I can’t wait for book 2.

This book is just okay. I found myself skim reading a lot because when it comes down to it very little happens. Really feels like it should have been one book instead of a cliffhanger. I always try to judge a book by if it was a slog to get through and felt like a chore? It did. And did anything actually happen? Like if asked could I tell the entire happening of the book in 1-2 sentences without missing anything major? Yep.

3.5 - ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ✨

"It's like you've always been there and always will be."

Fated Crossing is the debut novel of author Michelle Rose and it a NA High Fantasy Romance following the characters Grace, Prince Isiah, and King Niethal. Grace stumbled into a realm she never expected after the world thought the fae were gone. Instead, she finds a realm of five fae rulers and while the endearing King Niethal draws her own, Grace cannot help but suspect something odd at play. Prince Isiah was sent on behalf of his family to investigate the murmurings happening in the court of King Niethel and when he sets eyes onGrace he realizes a bond has snapped into place the likes the fae haven't seen in years. With political intrigue and war looming, Grace must decide how far she is willing to go to take a stand against those who threaten her world...and what she may lose in the process. All she knows is the answer lies in the blood.

This book has a lot of promise with an interesting plot and premise. Grace was an easy character to fall into and I could definitely feel her struggle. Isiah is a traditional fae hero and he plays the role without fault - he's charming and dedicated and I enjoyed him. King Niethal is something I am still on the fence about - we get his POV but I feel he is the villain so I didn't really want to connect with him. Any time there was some romance developing between him and Grace (at least until she accepts Isiah fully) was awkward and felt manipulative.

This book does contain spice and it was pretty good. It had a hint on excitement at the thought of being caught because of the forbidden love element which I enjoyed.

"A shame we're here or else I'd go back to my room and change into something more to your liking."
"Oh? And what would that be?"
"Nothing at all."

In terms of plot, I felt there were so issues with pacing and development. It felt rushed in many regards. I wish we had more time to get to know the world and characters and to slow down the events. The rushing meant some of the plot elements felt off or unnecessary given what we find out pages later (for example King Niethal and how nefarious he was and Grace inability to acknowledge it). I also felt the ending cliffhanger was more abrupt and made me confused.

In the end, I feel there is a lot of good here and such promise of the story. Grace and Isiah have the cheesy romance I love and the fated mates situation makes me so excited. Hopefully as time goes on the structure can be improved to slow things down and give us time with characters.

My rating system:
5 stars - Absolutely loved it! I would definitely read again anytime!
4 stars - Really liked it! Will most likely read again sometime.
3 stars - Liked it. Glad I read it but probably won't read again.
2 stars - Didn't like it. Glad I'm done with the book and I'll never read it again.
1 star - Very rare rating. Absolutely hated the book. Will never read again and I'll probably burn any copies I come across.

Debated 2 or 3 stars but just couldn't round up. Unfortunately this author's writing just isn't for me. I found the world building lacking, the dialogue forced and unnatural, the storyline trying too hard to get those desired "tropes", and I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters. Like seriously 10 minutes after Grace wakes up in a Fae land after being taken captive and shot with an arrow she is swooning. Girl, don't you think you have bigger issues at the moment?? Take some time to adjust lol. Her attraction to the "villain" was too quick and forced.

I did actually really like the MMC who is her true love interest. His character was better written with his personality and his relationship with his found family. However, her relationship with him is also rushed and forced unnaturally and I'm not a fan of insta-love/insta-lust unless there is a mate bond or something driving those instincts. So okay, they do have a mate bond so that does increase the initial "feelings" but basically after they had just met, have barely ever spoken, they had a quickie on the ballroom balcony like what? 😂 I'm sorry I guess I just like watching the relationship grow and develop a little more before they decide to cement the bond.

I did read the whole book and there were interesting parts (like the mental bond with the shadow monsters, that was kinda cool) but again overall it just wasn't for me. I wasn't planning on continuing the series but I downloaded book two just to take a peek and after I skimmed it I decided I am not interested enough to continue the series.

While this made for a quick and kind of fun read in between bigger and more intense series that I'm reading, I unfortunately wouldn't read again.

Honestly this book only deserved one star. But the author is so sweet and I feel bad. I DNFed at 14% so I don’t think it’s fair to say the entire book sucked as I didn’t read it all. But it made no since. After page one I was hooked and enjoying the ride. But then King Niethal was talking about all these feelings he had for grace. And grace gave very desperate vibes. Like she’s some abandoned puppy that has never had a single person show her any time of affection. He says like one kind thing to her and she basically falls in love. They talk about all these feelings they have for eachother and I as a reader just couldn’t feel those feelings. I thought I was crazy until I read some reviews and people were saying the same thing. And I think it’s because we don’t get to know who the characters are. There’s no development at all we’re just thrown right into it. And I thought I would like fact that it was fast paced but I just got confused and annoyed because I couldn’t build a connection with anybody or anything. And the icing on the cake was the “I’m in deep” comment. Right as she said that I just about threw my iPad across the room. Because how?!?!?! How are you in deep grace. You don’t know him. And his kindness is very fake anybody with half a brain cell could tell how fake he was being. She seems very desperate and child like. I wouldn’t say she acts like a teenager. Just a young kid desperate for love and to be seen. She annoyed me and I literally had to go back and look at the synopsis because I completely forgot her name and I needed her name for this review 😂. I want to say I have no problem with this author I saw them on TikTok and their book seemed interesting so I wanted to give it a shot. I really wanted to like it. And I will still give this author a shot on any other book they write. I feel bad because I think this is an indie author. And indie authors work so hard to promote. So please don’t let my review stop you from reading. Please read and give it a shot 💗

I gave it 3 stars but leaning more towards 2.5 stars.

*spoilers if you have not read it yet.

I saw this book on TikTok from the author and one scene in particular pulled me in to read this book, although once I got to that part of the book it was not like it was portrayed in the video (in terms of context). The video was more appealing and had more build up than the scene in the book.

I was hooked at first and very excited to get into it. When reading about Isaiah and Grace meeting for the first time I really enjoyed it, but then I felt like the plot was too fast and choppy and it felt rushed.

I also felt like Grace and Isiah’s relationship could have had so much potential to get to know them and build that connection organically, but I felt like it was also rushed. I know they are mated and would have an “instant” connection but in term of how much they care for each other it felt like there could have been “more” in the development of their characters and was too instantaneous.

I also felt weird reading about Niethal’s character and I’m not sure how to explain it. I am aware he has mind altering abilities and was most likely influencing Grace’s opinion of himself, but I just felt icky when I would read about him from her POV and it was weird how she would have such a connection with the villain when she also had a connection with Isiah who was her mate AND there was so many red flags with Niethal. He is the villain but than portrayed sometimes like he cares and it was confusing.

Overall, I enjoyed the first part of the book, but by the end (~80-90% in) I was just trying to get through it to see what happens and finish it. I’m torn about reading the next book since I want to know what ends up happening since it ended on a cliff hanger, but was not a huge fan.

I never thought this was how my review of this book would go after being excited to read it for a long time while the teasers were being posted on tiktok.
But personally i feel so let down, and i feel like it was hyped up to be something it isn’t.
Main problem for me being, the “Villain” Niethal receiving waaaay too much airtime and attention from the MC. I get that they started off being attracted to each other before she “knew” who he really was, but even after she finds out MANY of the bad things he does, we’re given inner monologue of her still being attracted to him and things like her swooning when he touches her or comes close (as well as STILL acting like this after meeting the love interest) I could be wrong that it’s hinted at that Niethal uses some form of manipulation to get these reactions but it’s never confirmed so it just makes it seem like she’s a puppy dog who follows him around everywhere even though he’s a DOUCHE.
And the ending???? don’t get me started on the ending… *****SPOILER ALERT***** It ends with her basically being “killed” but then coming back as the “Firebird” with no memories, but it’s written so that in the last scene she ignores Isiah (love interest) and WILLINGLY leaves with the villain Niethal after he calls her “Firebird” which is used like some weird pet name…
As you can see from all of this^^^^^, this is a story where the villain has too many wins for my liking. To the point where the book feels like it’s a love story between Niethal and Grace and not Isiah and Grace.

Book Review

Title: Fated Crossing
Author: Michelle Rose
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Smut Rating: 🌶🌶

Fated Crossing was a light read. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t give me what I felt I was owed.

The story is pretty straightforward, a human girl stumbles into the fae realm, gets captured by the handsome king that wants to use her to restore the fae to their former glory, but wait there is another prince in the mix that wants to help her. Add ancient magic and prophecies and boom chaos.

The plot was interesting, especially the ending, it left us with a lot of potential. I can’t wait to see where the story is headed.

The book felt like a prologue, but that’s to be expected sometimes in a series.

What I didn’t like though, was the fact that it felt a little rushed. In a sense, that our characters formed bonds in milliseconds between them that didn’t feel genuine. They couldn’t be, not in such a short amount of time.

Maybe that part was emphasized because we were introduced to a lot of new characters at once, so the time we could spend with each of them was significantly reduced.

Nonetheless, I found it an intriguing read.
There were some explicit scenes, nothing too crazy, but for the reason stated above, they felt a little forced as well…

Overall, if you’d like a fast-paced read, about fae, ancient magic, lost cities, and relics with kind of a love triangle, that I still don’t know which way it’s going to go, pick it up.

Call me a sucker for cheesy romance, but I adored this book. I knew from the start that the plot line would be quick with less than 300 pages, and that definitely reigned true only a few chapters in. However, there were many attributes about this book that made it refreshing to read. Michelle Rose delivers a FMC that doesn’t sulk in her own self pity and agonize the reader with an incessant inner monologue. The FMC, while moving very swiftly in her feelings for the MMC, felt refreshing and not so whinny like some FMC in fantasy books are. I enjoyed the FMC - very whimsical and optimistic in my view. I really love the idea of ancient rulers and hidden realms so I’m anticipating reading the sequel to find out more about this world. It was a quick read and enjoyable read so I give it five stars. It made me enjoy my read which is what it’s all about, right? The ending about ripped my heart out and I’m left feeling this void for wanting to fix the saddening, almost depressing, emotions felt by some characters in the “cliff-hanger” ending (an ending that while gut-wrenching, I did enjoy!)
Bravo, Michelle Rose.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish! Right away this book sucks you where the main character somehow finds herself in the fae world with the handsome fae king who takes an immediate liking to her and promises to let her go home once the crossing appears again, so they start getting to know each other and she starts falling for him....only when the ball happens she mets a handsome fae prince who turns out to be her mate! and from him she learns the truth about the king and about why she was really brought to the fae world and who she really is. So her and the handsome fae prince start sneaking around and once on her guards tries to her hurt and reveals that the king plans to kill her and the prince, her and prince and his friends flee to what they had hoped would be safety but the king beat them there. So with no other choice she bargins with the king and agrees to perform the ritual in order for her prince and friends to live...only when the ritual happens she changes plans and the book ends with a cliffhanger. I can't wait to start the next one!

╰► 2.5/5 ⭐️ 2/5🌶️

Have you ever looked at the uber eats app and thought, no, I probably shouldn't eat takeaway for the third time this week. But you come across something that looks really good and then you decide what the heck may as well. Then you eat it, feel way too stuffed after, have a bit of dissatisfaction, but don't regret it. Apparently, that's how I feel reading books like this.

It's short, not much going in terms of prose, the sentences are not complicated, and the characters aren't built up in a way where you care. However, I really liked the plot. I'm giving it a 2.5-star rating because it had a lot of potential, but I'm rounding down for the food coma it's left me in lol.

My rating system:

⭐️: Not my vibe at all.
⭐️⭐️: I finished it, but I didn't have a good time.
⭐️⭐️⭐️: Yeah, that was fun. I enjoyed myself. I probably won't reread it, but it was fun.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: I loved it and want to read more from this author.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Perfect, amazing, everything I love in a novel!

Incoming! An honest review…

The advertising for this novel was far better than the actual writing of the book. I said it.

I was dyyyyyying to read this book and literally squeaked in excitement to press the ‘Currently Reading’ button… Alas, a quality narrative was not to be found :(

The premise of the novel was thrilling but the execution severely lacked. It felt very teenage-like - the protagonist whines far too often and the narrative explained what was happening far too much. “I did this because…”, “he couldn’t do this because….”, “I decided to go here because”…” It was all surface-y. Characters, plot and dialogue. Nope.

I wanted to give up at 83% but HOPED the book got better (it didn’t) so I crawled through the rest of the book and skimmed irrelevant sections of text.

I honestly wish I had better things to say. I thought I’d love this book but unfortunately I did not.

Nuff said.

A quick read that gave me lots of feels but that just didn’t quite reach levels of interesting to keep me invested. I think it’s the way the two MC’s fell into insta love/lust because of the mate bond but then the FMC keeps “having feelings” for the antagonist. This makes no sense to me and kept taking me out of the story. She says things like “I know he’s holding my parents lives over my head and my head knows I should hate him. But, what about that time we went to breakfast!?!” Like, girl, no. Just no. Like, I understand he has mental manipulation powers but it’s made fairly clear fairly quickly she has an ability to overcome/fight his abilities and they’re closely related to touch so when she’s alone in her room thinking these things, it’s her. And that drives me crazy. I have no patience for the continued pining after a man who is clearly awful. I just don’t enjoy reading stories that contain that plot line.

This book was so amazing! It has easily become one of my top reads this year! I pray it come south in book form because I will be purchasing it!!

The characters in this story quickly became some of my top characters! All of them even the non main characters were so likable. The fmc is storms opinionated but loveable with so much on her shoulders, the mmc is sweet and nice and everything g you want in a male, the villain I would say is even likeable even with his wrong doings he does so much more that shows he isn't as mean as he seems, he has a gentle side and shows he does care fmc.

I CANNOT wait for the next book! I already feel the slump coming on! I can't wait to watch videos from the author as she continues her journey!

This will definitely be a book I will recommend to all my book loving friends and family!

Hit and Miss

I'm not going to lie - there were points in this book where I literally rolled my eyes. There were glaring inconsistencies (how can you have your hands tied behind your back but clutch your head in paint?) and some massive plot holes. The character development was slow and the FMC was contradictory. The world building confused me and the magic was basic at best. However, I could see what the author was trying to achieve and the idea was a good one. First books are tricky, but when I have read books like Leaves May Fall and Hellfye, both first books by indie authors, I guess that sets the bar super high. I hope the author takes more time with the second book and brings her characters to life a bit more so that they have some depth. Because at the moment it's all a little 2D for me.
