James Wolanyk is a fiction writer, teacher, and mindfulness coach from Boston, MA. He holds a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts and has been featured in a variety of magazines, quarterlies, and other publications. He currently lives in Riga, Latvia and is hastily preparing his next science-fiction releases.
The INTERSTELLAR GUNRUNNER series by James Wolanyk is a fantastic fun book based around the premise of a corrupt arms dealer named Bodhi Drezzek. A despicable man willing to sell to both sides of a galactic civil war, within minutes of each other, he is also incredibly entertaining as his attempts to backstab everyone have left him confused as to why no one likes him. He has a weird crew of oddballs and some ancient technology that could possibly destroy the universe if he ever let it out of its controls. If that sounds like your kind of your book then I heartily recommend it.
I picked up the Interstellar Gunrunner Boxed Set for 99c and then picked up the audiobook version. Personally, I recommend the first for price as the individual books cost full price so either I got a sale or there's something very strange going on. Either way, all three of the books segue into one another and form a excellent long read by themselves. The first book functions as an excellent stand-alone by itself but the sequels build from it and tell a coherent singular narrative that I think most people would enjoy.
INTERSTELLAR GUNRUNNER begins with Bodhi making a fortune on an outing, only to immediately blow it on an expensive suite to host his creditors for asking for even more money. How Bodhi ended up deep in debt becomes clear when he's stunned that instead of wanting to lend him more money, they all want him to pay off what he owes. Roped into a suicide mission to a tropical world, he must figure out how not to get roped into the cause of people who actually care.
TIME BREAKER deals with Bodhi trying to deal with the fact that the insurgents (sorry, liberationists) are an incredibly dumb bunch of amateurs who are a lot less pragmatic than he expected. Oh and a little girl has adopted a galaxy-destroying relic as a pet. Bodhi also has accidentally kidnapped some royalty that is a lot less useful as a hostage than he expected.
GALACTIC SAVIOR ends the trilogy with an apocalyptic but hilarious finish. Reality is broken and our protagonist is absolutely not at fault. There's a possible hope for everything and everyone but it's a long shot and those are the odds that Bodhi likes to play: just not when he's the one at stake. Dreaming gods and monsters are afoot as is the galaxy's largest empire after him.
Bodhi is a great protagonist and I absolutely enjoyed this collection of stories. I recommend everyone pick up a copy of the trilogy who enjoys space opera, humor, antiheroes and zaniness. It's the kind of book I write and that's my highest praise.
I heard great takes on this, praising its intelligence and humor. I had no idea how pleased I’d be early on and all the way to the end. Wolanyk has crafted an incredible sci-fi adventure, both in the epic scope and in its tragic comedy perfectly narrated by Garrett Brown. He’s a new narrator on my short list, just like Wolanyk is now on my list of author’s to buy at release and drop everything else. I won’t ruin the jokes by sharing them out of context here. Give it a shot. I highly doubt you’ll be anything but glad for the laughs and adventure.
