This might just be the worst Great Cleric volume I've read so far.
Very little action, with the way the first and only battle to take place ends up being resolved by pure accident.
The Pope showing again weakness when she had been taught by Luciel that she either needs to change in order to be the leader the Church needs her to be, or that she can simply give up her position as the Pope, and find something to do with her immortal lifespan.
She could've stepped down from her place in the Church and go do something she actually wants to do with her life.
This volume felt rushed, badly paced, shallow, and there were moments in the story that made no sense, and most of the main cast got very little screen time.
Not to mention that I still find it annoying and rather childish how Luciel pratically told the two girls who follow him around, like two lost puppies, in the previous volume, after both of them informed Luciel of their decision to enroll in an arranged marriage organization for nobility, that he would seriously think about asking both of them to marry him, and he asked of them to wait for him.
Then in this volume when they finally meet up after 3 months of no communication, there is not even one mention about marriage, and the three of them talk to each other all night?
What did these three talk about to each other for the duration of an entire night?
Their favorite foods and their favorite books?
Isn't that a little bit selfish of you, Luciel?
The way you treat these two young women, like you some kind of Casanova that is able to wait and do what he wants and the women who are interested in you won't pick another guy, you know, a guy who actually wants them as his wife or wives?
These girls are beautiful, young, charming, polite, well-mannered, and they are intelligent and smart and talented at what they do, and they are(at least Monica is) from high-ranked families and yet you treat them like this?
These two lovely young ladies are rejecting marriage proposals left and right from highly eligible bachelors for a guy who seems like he far more enjoys being in the middle of battle than he does being around two cool beauties?
That's fine and all, but at least tell the two young ladies to move on with their lives and to not be waiting for Lucian to propose marriage to both of them, or to one of them, because it's pretty clear this guy has no interest in getting married or in having children, no matter how many times he went on in the previous volumes about wanting to settle down somewhere, marry, and raise a family.
Yeah, buddy, next to you, even the Virgin Mary has had a more active sex life.
I very much doubt this guy is even sexually interested in women based in how when the White Wolf company invited him to go to a brothel he quickly declined, and hasn't been with a woman - not even gone on a date with a woman - in the 7 years he's been living in that world.
How about Luciel finally comes out from the closet, or admits to being asexual?
There's more romance and physicality in the Bible than there's any in this light novel series.
Isn't this guy supposed to be 21 or 22 years old, with a body in peak perfection and perfect health, but somehow he has the sex drive of a 100 year old Catholic Pope?
I get it that substance X deleted his sex drive while he was on the juice, but it's been a long time since he decided to not drink it on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, and he still behaves more like a Catholic priest than many priests actually behave like.
Why do I have the feeling this guy, when the final volume is published one day, that he will either die more ''pure'' than the falling snow, or that he will find himself a wife, someone who will be pushed onto him without him being able to say no to her for whatever reason, because it's obvious that when it comes to women he's got as much experience with them as a newborn baby.
And that is accounting for his experiences with women back from his life in modern Japan as a salaryman in his mid or late 30s, good grief.
Luciel has returned from his extended time away, only to find there's a faction within the Church that apparently wants him dead. And they've tasked Lumina and Catherine with the nasty job of bringing him in. Now Luciel has to figure out what the Church means to him and how he intends to confront these plots.
This volume ties up some of the longer-running plots that have been going on through recent volumes, although I'm not exactly thrilled with how this all played out. Luciel basically gets lucky enough to have a bad guy willing to spell out his entire agenda and fill in all the missing pieces.
Then again, this series has never been at its best dealing with the political side of things. All of the discussions here are mostly setting up the bigger problem with the demons (and a few countries that are either working to create their own demons or possibly working with the demons). The few action scenes are amusing enough, and I do like seeing Luciel reunited with Brod.
Overall, this many volumes in you should already know what you're in for. It's a serviceable volume, and moves the plot along, but there also isn't anything that really stood out to me. I rate this book Neutral.
Personally I was a bit worried about this volume based on the reviews and the way the whole rumour aspect was depicted in volume 9. So I was pleasantly surprised by actually liking it reasonably well. Yes, it was light on action and contained a few large information dumps, but so did earlier volumes and I personally don't mind those too much. And yes, the end was a bit anti-climatic but I found it very fitting to the series and a bit funny as well. It also came with a few reveals and character developments both for Luciel and those around him, which pushed the main plot forward as well. Always a good thing in my opinion and at times rear in light novels who have a tendency to deal with the major story at a snail's pace. So was it a top read, no, but the series has never been such for me. Was it a fun and entertaining read? Yes, and I hope we get to see what direction the story is going to take in the future.
This volume sees Luciel head back to Merratoni to gather together his favorite crew and bring down the agents of darkness in the church. Its great getting to see all these well-loved characters get a chance to shine, so grab this volume asap!
I thought the series was finished which is why I read through volume 6 to 10. If I had known there is more to the story I wouldn't have done that. It has been 2 years since the last volume. I hope the author is doing well. I'm honestly not satisfied with what is happening in the series. The only reason I keep reading is bc I'm curious about the characters.
The plot and characters are getting more complex and interesting without too much darkness which is hinted at ahead. Enjoyable to read with likeable characters.
This book finishes up the side quest and sets the stage for further plot progression. The next book will really set the stage for whether this series is falling off or not.
I really enjoyed this volume. It still seems some parts are cliche. It seems like the culprit last minute change of heart was unnecessary. It would have more impact had he been firm on his convictions. The pope’s character seems to be less impressive and more pathetic.
