When a construction crew digs up an ancient archaeological site, they unwittingly unleash an evil hellhound bent on world conquest. Now, a growing army of werewolves has taken over the town of silver springs, and the only people who can save the day are the motley crew at the local gun store. Everybody got that?
A couple of crazy, gun loving fanatics who go by the name of the "Ballistic Brothers" get the opportunity to use some of the biggest and baddest weapons in a bid to stop a werewolf invasion that has been unleashed on their town! The action kicks off straight away, and the story is well written, humorous and bloody, and is a really good, quick and fun read!
The narration felt like I was sat at a campfire, or on a back porch with Jesse, and he was telling me the story first hand!
Also, the personal artwork for each chapter was a real nice touch, it was interesting to see Jesse's progression as an artist, a very talented artist!
The only downside for me, was I had to skim some of the gun info, there was a lot of it, and for me personally, not being very au fait with guns, it was like a foreign language and hard to digest.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and I give it a 4.5/5
I purchased this because I liked one of the blurbs on the cover: "I really didn't like it. It's just so violent, crass, and juvenile. I'm sorry!" attributed to Jesse's wife. Truth in advertising is a rare thing, and sometimes violent, crass, and juvenile is what you're in the mood to read. Doomsday Dogs does all three rather well. The plot is rather hackneyed; a spear is pulled out of the ancient alpha werewolf's heart by meddling archaeologists, and the protagonists have to replace it before he turns Earth into a werewolf world. They're an unlikely duo, brothers who run a gun store left by their parents and have a YouTube show in which they shoot and/or blow-up things. They have a nice group of friends and customers who also enjoy shooting stuff and blowing it up, and they're just the crew to have at your back in the event of a werewolf apocalypse set in small rural redneck Kentucky town. Some of the technical detail about the guns is a little long-winded and tedious, but that's okay. The prose is fast and funny in a Duck Dynasty/Dukes of Hazard/Breckenridge Elkins style, and it reads like a tale told around a campfire with a cold keg at hand. D'Angelo doesn't just drop the occasional F-bomb, he loads those bad boys up in a 12-gauge and peppers the page with them, both in the dialog and the narration. He also addresses the reader from time to time and asks if they're keeping up. "Everybody got that?" There were also lots of funny one-liners, such as the tumbleweed that wasn't there but should have been on page 76, "...screaming like Mariah Carey if she saw a rat" also page 76, or an observation on page 66: "Man, nobody reads -books- about werewolves!" The book is very well edited and is chock-full of chuckles that are funnier than they should have been. It's definitely violent, crass, and juvenile and I enjoyed it.
I haven’t laughed that much while listening to an audiobook before. D’Angelo had me cracking up throughout, and Duregger’s narration of the book was incredible. I can only imagine how fun this book was to narrate. I have seen this in other reviews of the book, but it’s worth repeating- this book gives off a Zombie Land/Sean of the Dead vibe in all the best ways. The only thing that truly holds this back from being a 5 star book to me is the lack of over the top human deaths. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it felt like the group of protagonists made pretty easy work of the monsters up until the last act of the book. I would have loved to see some wild deaths mixed in from this insane cast of characters. I will absolutely be checking out more of Jesse’s work, this is a solid 4.5 star book!
I'm not a Comedy guy, like at all, but this book made me chuckle quite a few times, making my first experience with a Comedy/Horror book a blast!! Not a Comedy fan, then buy this book for the lovely works of D'Angelo Werewolf artwork that is at the beginning of each chapter and showcase Jesse's sketches over the past few decades. This book is also in the process of becoming an audiobook and I think it will be a smash hit and work perfectly with how the text is written. This title is a MUST own in all formats!!!
I had an absolute blast with DOOMSDAY DOGS by Jesse D'Angelo from the very start. Werewolves are getting hot again (did they ever stop, actually?) thanks to a lot of great things happening in the horror world recently. There are B-movie vibes out the wazoo in this story and it's loaded with hilarity, action, and sarcasm. And everything Sean Duregger narrates turns to gold. And you can really tell he had a great time performing this story. All the voices were great - and some of them said certain things that I can only imagine made Duregger chuckle and really be happy with what he does. But this novella and audio combo from D'angelo and Duregger totally worked for me! You have to check this one out.
Picked this up after reading Dying Sheep by this author and again I was not disappointed in the least! The amount of dry humor, puns and the right amount of gore was exactly what I needed. Coming in at 150 pages (paperback) I will say I devoured this in about an hour! The connection between the characters was flawless and the dialog flowed perfectly. While reading this it was like watching a movie in my mind. B-movie quality all the way! Want a small town or almost singular place of action then this is for you! Want to see how a werewolf (no don't say the word werewolf if you want to be taken seriously) take over would play out then this is for you! To say the least it was a blast to read! Oh and only believe half of what the movies show you 😆.
I absolutely loved this story. It was hilarious and action packed. I especially loved that this story centered around werewolves instead of zombies. Solid 5 🌟
The world may be about to face extinction at the teeth and claws of a horde of werewolves, but Mac and Landon have the know-how, the ammo, the explosives and the friends to perhaps make it through this furry apocalypse - even if Ms Millie Reed really wants that bright pink Sccy CPX with the laser sight.
Doomsday Dogs delivers on fun, entertainment, action, and guns - lots of guns. In fact, the gun part is the only thing that had me keeping this just shy of five stars because I have no idea what most of the gun talk is all about. I’m from the UK, so guns are a thing from video games or angry farmers with a double-barrel 12 gauge - and I had to look that up to make sure I got it right.
There’s a part of the story with a character fixated upon a gun called a Rhino, and I remember thinking, ‘that has to be made up for the story. Nobody would make a gun called a Rhino.’ Until a quick google search had me going, ‘Oh, of course, they fucking did.’
However, gun terminology aside, Doomsday Dogs is a great read. The action is high, the characters have great camaraderie, and the comedy hits the spot. The narrator’s voice elevates everything to a level where you can imagine some grizzled old boy sitting down and reciting this tale, cussing away and spitting into the campfire.
Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of the book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I cannot recall the last time I've laughed so much at a book, but that deep kind or 'wincing laugh' you do when you know you prooobably shouldn't be as amused as you are..
When an ancient curse is released resulting in a Werewolf plague, not unlike a zombie one, erupting, survivors have to band together to survive. Thankfully, the civies have Mac and Langdon, two very different rednecks with a love for all things that go BOOM.
This book cracked me up. Sure, it's heavily loaded with technical data of weapons (particularly early on) but I'm used to that from Larry Correia books but here the weapons are turned up to 11!
The action, over the top gore and violence are all portrayed masterfully by Sean who injects a perfect balance of sarcasm, grit and sound effects that bring the words to life perfectly and I think this may be my favourite narration of 2022.
A brilliant, brilliant book, full of comedic insanity that does not overstay it's welcome.
First four chapters of Doomsday Dogs was mostly about guns, while introducing characters right and left. I have no qualms with that, but it did get this story off to a slow start to what I thought would be a fun gore fest early on.
But, it does get exciting after the slow start.
I can tell Jesse D’Angelo is a great storyteller, and I can’t wait to read his future works as he improves his writing and storytelling.
The Ballistic Brothers are freaking hilarious, and they get shit done. Right from the beginning, this is fast-paced and gory. An Ancient Werewolf has been discovered after an archeological dig... and is terrorizing the town. I loved all of the Werewolf drawings Jesse adds into each chapter.
When an archaeology crew unearths an ancient spear, little do they know what horrors they are actually unleashing! Brothers Mac and Landon, known to their You Tube fans as the Ballistic Brothers, encounter the hellhounds that come from this dig: Werewolves! But, nobody wants to believe that such things are possible and the brothers have to fight for their lives, as well as the lives of their friends.
This was an entertaining story and reminiscent of some zompoc books I have read. The interactions between the brothers was fun and the other characters were great, complete with an older grandmotherly type, a bombshell, and an old curmudgeon. The main thing that kept this from being a 4 star listen for me was the HUGE amount of profanity from start to finish and the heavy emphasis on guns and ammo information. But, if you like your stories to be full of the f-bomb, etc. and lots of gun talk, you should really enjoy this one.
The narrator did a great job and his voices and sound effects added a lot to the book. I will definitely be looking for more of his narrations. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the narrator/author/publisher and chose to review it.
This is incredibly fresh take on every SyFy movie I’ve ever watched…
While the story was a hell of a lot of fun and well executed, the narrators voice is what really put this one to the next level. I felt like I was sitting around campfire, roasting some heavily furred animals and listening to one of my uncles telling a really fucking epic story.
To anyone who didn't like this book and left it a 3-star or below review,
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please don't just leave a rating, leave a review as well! Reviews and critiques are very useful. They help me grow and improve, and see what readers want and don't want. So please feel free to talk smack and explain why you think this book sucks! I assure you I can take it!
This was a fun one Hillbillies and ancient werewolf’s what more could you ask for Sean’s narration was fantastic proving why he’s one of the best Funny and action packed highly recommended I received a free review audiobook and voluntarily left this review
Cheese and crackers! This was one seriously funny apocalyptic style adventure! Short, not so sweet and action packed! If you’re looking for an adventurous laugh, Jesse did a bang up job!
I simply CANNOT overstate how much I loved this book! Definitely a new favorite. The characters are funny and quirky and just thoroughly fed up with this whole werewolf situation. The book is written as someone telling you the story, and it truly feels like you are sitting next to someone as they spin the wildest yarn of their life. The narration is spot on and really took this one over the top for me. The different voices, but especially the sound effects for the myriad arsenal of guns, definitely made this a particularly fantastic journey. It's a good thing I work alone, because if anyone had seen me laughing and grinning like a maniac, they'd have thought I'd lost my mind!
This is your best friend telling a story while everyone sits around the campfire drinking beers on a hot summer night kind of story. Except it’s good. Better than good actually, because not only is it funny as hell, it has some great characters. A wide variety of misfits make up an incredible last stand in a gun shop as werewolves over run the town. Hilarious commentary from the narrator only adds to some of the over the top action making this more like a tale someone would tell on a sleepover. I lost track of how many times I busted out laughing.
This story is a fantastic action packed werewolf apocalypse-about-to-happen! It's witty and i giggled quite a few times. My favourite part were the characters. Stereotypical but great fun, and Sean Duregger's narration brought them to life amazingly! Mind you, i think i may have missed out on some art on the audiobook. My only struggle was the heavy gun talk, I don't understand guns so for me that went over my head. Definitely highly recommend for a fun read.
I love the idea of a werewolf apocalypse, I have a hard time getting into apocalyptic tales though and unfortunately for me having werewolves wasn't enough to make me like it. It was well written though and this is just a personal preference thing.
