Sixteen-year-old Terryn Lofton crumples with pain when she gets too far from her twin brother, Trigg. It started the same day as his mysterious heart attack that has since taken them from doctors to specialists looking for answers. Terryn doesn’t have time for another mystery. So, she keeps the pain to herself and calls it the “twin tug.”
Her overbearing silence drives Trigg away. Yet, with no parents of their own, Trigg needs Terryn more than ever. Since the heart attack, he has had a repeating night terror that ends when a dark-haired, woman warrior shoots him with silver arrows. Terryn is the only one who can safely wake him from his terrorized sleep. Terryn senses Trigg is not being completely truthful about his dream, but because of her own secrets is hardly in a position to judge.
Then something impossible happens. In the doctor’s office, following Trigg’s third sleep study, the woman warrior from his dream waits. Trigg tries to run, but escaping from a dream is not as easy when you’re in the waking world.
Confronted by the possibility his night terrors are more than they seem, the twins finally reveal their secrets to each other. Their revelations send them on an epic adventure beyond time and across dimensions to save each other – if the dark creatures that lurk Between don’t kill them first.
S. E. Henry is an author of young adult fantasy and other fantastical stories. She lives between the oaken woods that line the Mississippi River and the Midwest prairies. She is fascinated by stories that take place on the edges — for that is where the magic hides.
When she’s not writing, she trains her Australian shepherds to compete in agility courses, drinks copious amounts of chai latte, and decorates her planners with writing stickers.
Have you ever wondered about the world of your dreams?
S. E. Henry has woven a beautiful fantasy exploring what happens to sleepers and dreamers. She’s crafted a rich world full of whimsy and danger that feels vast and beautiful, with rules to understand and mysteries that may never be fully explained. I absolutely loved the whimsical environment, with magic and fauns, sylphs, gargoyles and gnomes and many others besides. It gave me some Narnia vibes, though with a little more technology, which was unexpected in such a fantasy and so fun. Some of the scenes completely sucked me in; S. E. Henry has a a vivid imagination, and so many events and settings felt unique, fresh and so real. I have to say, the scene with the aviary was probably one of my favorites; owls are awesome.
I also love how our two main characters are brother and sister, Trigg and Terryn; I’ve been craving stories that focus on non-romantic relationships, just as strong and important, and sometimes even more so than romantic ones. Romance is definitely not absent here, but having a sibling relationship at the story’s center gets a big cheer from me. :-)
Another intriguing aspect is the United vs the Divided; two sides with opposing opinions on how sleepers should be looked after, and how things should be done in Imperious Nox, yet I cannot say that one is right and the other is wrong. Both have solid reasons for what they believe, and frankly, were I in a situation to choose between them, I can’t exactly say who would be the better choice. I’ll be excited to see what happens in the next book!
