From the bestselling Western author of Old Dogs comes its thrilling sequel, Day of the Dog!
With a baby on the way, Sierra Jackson is uncertain about the dog with the "spooky looking" eye her husband, Jordy, returns home with to their house on the Lucky Five Ranch. Their Uncle Rudy's health appears to be failing, ranch operation funds are tight, and a family new to the ranch brings with them a host of complications. With all of life's current challenges, Sierra just has reservations about the other new addition to the Jackson family.
But when the next spring's cattle drive to Dodge City leads to a series of events that put lives in danger at the ranch, the dog proves to be an invaluable companion.
Jack Wills still looms large over the Lucky Five in this sequel to Old Dogs, a search Western that will once again have you laughing, crying, and in suspense until the very end!

A WESTERN ACTION MASTERPIECE WITH HERO'S THAT DEFINE THE WORD HERO
Day of the Dog (Lucky Five) by Ron Schwab is a well written Western action adventure that is action-packed throughout and you will definitely find yourself captivated from the beginning to the end of the story to see what is going to happen next.
This is a story of love, friendship, loyalty, and bettral in the worst way. It's a story of determination and sacrifice, struggles and losses, kindness, and joy.
All the characters are clearly outlined, and you will find yourself routing for the good guys to defeat the bad guys and return to their peaceful life on The Lucky Five Ranch.
After the loss of Jack and Thor in the first book in this series, Jordy, Sierra, Rudy, and the rest of The Lucky Five Ranch and The Lucky Five Freight Company band together to save their livestock and members of their ranch community against pure evil men which their only goal is to take from those who have with violence and without a care in the world for the lifes that they end and the damage to those that survive there attack.
I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who loves a good Western story with heroes that truly defines what a true hero is.
I earned my certified bookworm card at eight when I received a complete set of Zane Grey western novels as a Christmas present. That was the Christmas of 1951. I read those books so many times that the pages started falling out of them. In the years following, I read all the masters, western novelist like Max Brand, Louis L’Amour, Elmer Kelton, Luke Short, and Willa Carter, to name just a few. With a few exceptions, there are few writers today that could ride the river with those worthy. Ron Schwab is one of those exceptions.
I had never heard of Ron Schwab until I downloaded The Old Dogs, the book in which we meet all the main characters we meet again on the Day of The Dog, the sequel to The Old Dogs. As the story begins, we find Jordy Jackson, Jack Wills’ adopted son, married to Sienna Wills, Jack’s granddaughter. Jordy and Sienna had inhered The Lucky Five ranch upon Jack’s death. Some time has passed since we left them in The Old Dogs, and Jordy and Sienna are married and have a baby on the way. Like with The Old Dogs, this tale begins when Lucky Five cattle have been rustled and Jordy sets out to recover his rustled stock.
Like Jack, Jordy doesn’t believe cattle russeling is a hanging offense, and that’s where his trouble begins. The rustler, a neighbor, also beats his wife and his dog. Jordy adopts the dog and tells the man if he ever catches him beating his wife again, he will answer to him. Sienna visits the wife and finds her beaten to within an inch of her life and brings her and her kids back to the Lucky Five Ranch. From there, everything escalates. More cattle, rustling. The guy goes to the Lucky Five while most of the men are away on a cattle drive, murders his wife, kidnaps Sierra and his daughter, and, with the help of a few renegade Indians, rustles more of Jordy and Sierra’s cattle.
How will this saga end? Will Jordy get his cattle back? Will he be able to find and rescue Sienna before her captors can get her across the Rio Grande and sold in old Mexico? The ending will blow you away. This tale is a nonstop, action-packed, rollercoaster, thrill rid that will keep glued to the edge of your seat, from the first page to the last page. If you enjoy a great western tale, then this book is a must read for you. Five stars don’t do it justice. I would give it ten if I could.
I adore all of the series by Ron Schwab. Even when I am feeling down or depressed, any of his books will pick me right back up again, whether they are a new tale, or a repeat read of an older one. The Lucky Five series so far has only a couple of books centered around this ranching Jackson family from post-Civil War Western Texas. First in the series is Old Dogs. With Day of the Dog we are in the stories of the newest generation of the Jacksons, Jordy and his wife Sierra with their newborn son, and we have only old Hank left among the older generation of this family from the Lucky Five Ranch near San Angelo. It is a family tale I think you will love.
You don't have to read any of Ron Schwab's many series completely, or even in order, to find the tales fascinating but once you get started you will want to read them all. And don't even get me started talking about his stand-alone novels. Ron Schwab is a public treasure.

Another great book by this author. There were several main characters. The husband and wife, Uncle Rudy and the dog named Magni. A good book after Old Dogs! I enjoyed all of the characters and could have had more information to enlarge each of their characters. A good place to be when writing about anyone or anything. I will continue re a ding his books.
Throughly enjoyed this 2nd book in the series. I can only hope there will be more. The familiar characters are what makes this tale a great story. As promised, the plot kept you guessing until the end. The scene settings were adequate, without slowing the story. I liked that there wasn’t too much repetition in tying the first book to the second. I will continue to read more books by Mr. Schwab.
The tale of a gutsy woman, an old Texas Ranger, and a dog with the power of Thor. In this satisfying sequel to Old Dogs, Jack Wills is dead but not completely gone. The Lucky Five Ranch now belongs to his granddaughter (Sierra) and Jack's foster son (Jordy), who are married and expecting their first baby. Jack's old friend (Rudy) is still around, failing in mind and body but mysteriously able to communicate with Jack's spirit.
The story begins when Jordy saves a large young dog from a brutal whipping by a vicious neighbor (Gerlach), who's been rustling Lucky Five cattle. Jordy keeps the dog and names him Magni, since he's a son of Thor, Jack's old dog. Magni isn't the only victim of Gerlach's cruelty. When Sierra learns that Gerlach also beats his wife, she takes the woman and her children to the Lucky Five Ranch for their safety.
Gerlach is involved with a nefarious band of cattle thieves, who scheme to steal the Lucky Five's herd of two thousand head being driven to market in Dodge City by Jordy and his crew. The thieves, aided by renegade Comanches, also plan to rustle the remaining five hundred head from the Lucky Five while Jordy and his crew are gone, leaving mostly women and children at ranch headquarters. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Gerlach and some of his cohorts kidnap Sierra (who's given birth to a son), and Gerlach's little girl, intending to sell them to Mexican bordellos. These guys are truly evil.
The book's second half is somewhat confusing, as several groups of rescuers try to track the outlaws by following various trails through the Texas prairie. Even Jordy gets confused, declaring that "this is like untangling a barrel full of spurs." No kidding. But don't give up. The outlaws might be smart enough to elude Jordy and his friends, but what happens when evil men come up against a gutsy woman, an old Texas Ranger with enough grit for one last fight, and an angry dog with the formidable power of Thor? Grab this well-written western to find out!
Jordy and Sierra have their hands full in this one. Demand is down for their cattle and horses and their no good neighbor is rustling the cattle. When Jordy goes to confront him with it, he finds the thief also beats his wife, abuses his children and dog. The dog went home with Jordy and the family followed shortly thereafter. A cattle drive to Dodge City could prove deadly, as Comanches are hired to rustle the cattle at the ranch, Sierra is kidnapped and there is a plan to rustle cattle from the drive.
My new favorite western author. I love Louis Lamour, Zane Gray, William W. Johnston, but since happening upon Ron Schwab with Old Dogs a week or so ago, I just had to follow up with Day of the Dog. Something about his writing style that is so easy to read, and his plots are engaging. As a dog lover myself, the fact that a dog was involved was what first drew me to the book titles. A dog does play an important role in each book, but not as the main character. I will be reading more titles by Ron Schwab.
Love these two books and wish there were more. I love Jordi, Sierra, and the old characters — oh, we can’t forget the dogs! I don’t believe a giant bulldog on the front cover works though. Bulldogs have short legs and can’t run those many miles. A mix between a big sheep herders dog and Thor—nope it doesn’t work. Lots of adventures, recoveries, and villains getting their comeuppance. I love that Magni ended Mr Gerlach. What a worthless scumbag!
Another great book and thoroughly good read from Ton Schwab. All the characters in Ron’s books are portrayed in such a way in that you can almost see them in your mind whilst being absorbed in the story. I would love to see another book written for this series as in my mind there’s still a lot of good story lines in the characters etc. As I said a great book and would recommend it. 👍🏻
Once again Ron Schwab has drawn me in to a very well written story that grabbed me and never let go. The Day of the Dog is one of Schwab's best. His books are easy to read and perfect escapes from the dog days of life (pun intended). I heartily recommend ALL of Schwab's books. He is my favorite modern author.
If you like Westerns, with stories about dogs, horses and people, then you need to read this. Just the best of entertainment. Rather than one huge book, Ron usually writes series which I prefer. Its like waiting for the next episode or great chapter for a family. I hope there's another book for this family.
I read book one some time ago, enjoyed very much. Found and finished book two today.
Mr Schwab is a fine story teller. He uses great believable characters, great location and a very good storyline. He puts it all together in a very good package. Thank you Mr Schwab, very good fun reading.
Ron Schwab’s sequel to Old Dog and was every bit as exciting. His stories are always packed with action, intrigue, danger and interesting characters….heroes and villains not withstanding. I have read almost all of his books and eagerly look forward to the next. You cannot go wrong with any of his books and series. Excellent writer!
Interesting read. Nothing heavy but pretty true to Texas in the 1800s. Cattle men were a tough bunch or they would not have made American ranching the large such success that it still is. This book has lots of different challenges for the ranch folks that are the main characters. If you like western novels it’s worth your time to read it.
I loved this story. Very easy to quickly get immersed in the action and identify with the characters. When you feel the emotions of the characters and become lost in their lives, you know you've got a great, enjoyable story. It's the whole point in reading, you become lost or at least engrossed in the tale. Thank you for the ride! .
This was a great story (books). Both Thor and Mangi play critical roles throughout the books. Along with Jack, Rudy and the other Ranger company members, you gave the Buffalo Soldiers and the other hodgepodge of characters making up the Lucky 5 Ranch. Book 2 is the story of Jordy and Sierra’s life along with all the other main supporting characters.
Terrific sequel that could easily continue into a series. There is several interesting characters around which the storyline could move forward. I certainly hope so!
A Great Book I had a hard time to put the book down. It has a little bit of everything. There is a lot of adventure, sadness, love and how things were like in the old West.
I have always enjoyed his style of writing. I would put his writing and stories with that of one my favourites Louis Lenore and a few others. He is one of the top 5 western writers of all time.
This 2 novel set is an excellent reading adventure. I truly love these western adventures and seeing the sight of Texas as a bonus. Well done Robin Schwab and thank you.
Day of the dog made me feel part of he story ==From the dog to the to the maintaining of the large ranch to the attempts in destroying the people trying to survive
i enjoy a good book that I'm ashamed to be reading in public. That is one reason I enjoy Ron's books. Good story lines, plenty of action, great family appeal.
This story from Schwab is the forming of the 2nd generation of the Lucky Five Ranch in the West Texas 1870s. What a tale of adventure, heartbreak, cattle rustlers, new families and a new hero dog, Magi.
I've now read both of Ron Schwab's Day of the Dog books. I love cowboy stories but a good dog adds so much heart. This author is far better than most that I have read of late. I recommend it.
This is another winner from one of my many "favorite authors" . Hahaha well I have found so many that I like I am having a field day. There are so many good books. This is one of those many. Enjoy as I did.
Jordy now married to Sierra must make a cattle drive to Dodge City to try and recoup their dwindling funds. Trouble on both the cattle drive and home front follow. Good book. Wouldn't mind seeing another one in this series.
Words can never be said to thoroughly describe the wonderful story told by these words that must be read 📚 for one to enjoy the totality of excitement contained therein.
