To Dare the Devil

Their mothers dared all for love.
Just imagine what their daughters will do…

Neither Fish nor Fowl…
Kathleen de Beauvoir does not know who she is. Adopted by loving parents when only hours old, she has a wonderful family, including an irascible older brother, and a place in her parents’ hearts that is never in doubt. Yet she doesn’t fit in. Her father is a brilliant scientist, but she has no aptitude for the subject. Her mother is a dynamic whirlwind of a woman who can claim the Duke and Duchess of Bedwin as kin, and Kathy is not at ease among the ton. Even with friends at her side, it is hard to be comfortable among people who regard her with suspicion, who believe her blood may hold unknown qualities that could taint the purity of their family line. Good heavens, her actual parents might have been criminals! Unfortunately, Kathy does not help her situation, overburdened as she is with a wealth of opinions, a habit of speaking before thinking, and an impulsive nature.
Her first season is bound to be ghastly.

A Devil on the Road to Redemption…
The Earl of Vane has a well-earned reputation for being selfish, arrogant, cruel, and despicable. He has made an enthusiastic study of vice and dissipation for most of his adult life until someone decides he’s gone too far. Stabbed and left to die in a filthy alleyway, Vane realises his mistakes too late, but a quirk of fate and charity he has no right to claim gives him a second chance.

An Unlikely Alliance…
When Kathy recognises this man is the one she helped raise from the dead, she calls in the debt he owes, finding her own sense of purpose in the school he is funding to atone for his sins. Kathy is in no doubt of what kind of man the Earl of Vane is, having heard his fevered confessions of wickedness. However, she cannot be certain such a man can ever truly change, no matter how many schools he funds or how much she wants to believe it possible.

A terrible secret…
Vane’s memory is still hazy following his attack, and it takes some time and a chance encounter for him to remember the girl who helped tend his wounds, though her sharp tongue left more of a mark than her care.
A wicked past is not so easily erased, though, and as Vane dares to hope for a future with a woman he knows he does not deserve, he discovers the path to redemption is harder than he could ever have imagined.

**** This is the eleventh book in a series and focuses on the children of The Girls Who Dare series. They can be read separate from Girls Who Dare; however for a more intimate experience, one should read the Girls Who Dare first.

The Mystery Woman💃💋 Finds Love💘
This ADULT Historical Early Victorian Romance💕 novel has more angst than I like but it was a fast paced, interesting read about a rake who refuses to let his saving Angel 👼 slip away.
Family trees are included in the beginning of the book to help readers with the character's relationships to each other.

These books can be stand alone, but not really; so much of the stories are interwoven in each book. Anyway, this book was so good. This author really writes deep feelings so well. The descriptions pull you in and you feel it too. I didn’t think the author could really make our hero believable in his redemption, but she did. Just excellent. Truly heartfelt and sweet.

Great book!

I loved it. Kathy and Max are both troubled and complex characters and I really loved reading their story unfold. I had trouble putting the book down and enjoyed all the plot twists and turns.

Kathleen de Beauvoir has never fit it with the Ton, even when her titled friends are with her. She was adopted when she was hours old - her father is a brilliant scientist & her mother is kin to the Duke & Duchess of Bedwin.
She always feels as though people are wondering if her birth parents were criminals or worse. She is intelligent, opinionated & tends to speak before thinking.

Maxwell Drake, seventh Earl of Vane, has lived his life proving how despicable he could be with vices of gambling, whoring, drinking, sleeping with other men's wives & a arrogant, cruel personality. But when he is left for dead in the East End filth; he receives his payback for all the hurt he has caused.

Kathy comes upon Max while visiting the East End with her brother - Max is unconscious with high fever but Kathy tends to his wounds with honey & clean bandages & leaves directions with the man that saved Max from the streets. Max remembers an angel speaking to him when he was so sick but that was two years ago and no one knows who he is speaking about. Then they come face to face - these character are both so troubled by theirs pasts and I loved reading the emotional stories unfold as their romance blossomed.

Will she let the man he was tear an uncrossable bridge between them …

I know how it is difficult to go back through an author’s list but while each story stands alone, to enjoy the experience wholly, reading the previous book before this story would offer some hints about Katie and Max, and for the parts outside the main characters’ romance, the mothers’ series and the books that precede this one would complete the adventure and explain the cries and shouts about 𝓛𝓞𝓤𝓘𝓢!!!
And don’t let me rant at the author for what she is putting him through…. 😳😱😭🫣🤬and me … 😰😤🤪🥹😮‍💨

And the hints about the other stories to come … Pip … Cat … the Barringtons are going to rock the ton …
But also Ozzie, the other Frenchman, …
We are in with Louis, Evie and the all others for a bumpy journey in the next books to come.

This series and The Girls Who Dare series are like a soap opera in the good sense of the word, it began with the ten girls from To Dare a Duke and through time it evolved to 12 couples and now we follow their children and their journey toward love.
Kathy was a shadow in the previous books, we knew she existed because the family trees shows her name, but outside that, she really made her first appearance in the previous book, same for Vane.
I confess I was curious about Kathie and her brother, they are some of few adopted children from the lot, if one does not count Aggie, Louis’ ward and of course Phoebe.
So I wanted to know more about how they came to the de Beauvoir household.
But while it is not really explained, we learn enough to understand why she believes she does not fit among her friends’ world, an outsider from the outside, one who will always walk the thin line of the ton’s rules, already ruined through her birth and yet still part because of her connections to powerful houses.
Vane is a man who saw his soul in the devil’s mirror, and what he found left him with an intense disgust of whom he had become. Sure, like many villain, it is because he did not know a caring hand his whole life, but before jumping into the river of sins, he did try but the last straw was his mother’s disclosure of his own genesis.
It snapped the last thread that held him back until a brush with death and facing his wrongdoings shake him enough to want to clean his slate but the past has always a way to come back haunting you, all the more so if you never forgave you for your transgressions.

So while all the signs are there to show how attracted they are by each other, their wounds je mostly his past play tricks with them and take pleasure to come out of the blue to tear them apart.
An other hit.

Amazing!

Another amazing story in the Daring daughters series.

He is the very devil himself or so she thought until she starts spending time with him and getting to know him while he is trying to become a better person. Despite how much she truly wants not love him, the heart wants what it wants. And her heart wants him.

I definitely loved the teasers of the next book and future books to come.

The tone of this series has been lighter overall than in Emma Leech's previous series, and I've found myself missing the strong emotional impact her writing can have. "To Dare the Devil" hearkens back to how effective she is when dealing with deep themes like redemption. Lord Vane, the H, was previously introduced as a darkly cynical, debauched young man who made terrible decisions, and after a near-death experience, he must pick up the pieces of his life and try to repent. He is a character you're not predisposed to like, but his struggles with self-doubt and self-loathing humanize him and mold him into someone the reader can sympathize with.

Although Vane has good chemistry with Kathy, the h, I thought their relationship moved from partners to love a bit too quickly to be convincing. I was most moved by Vane's father-son relationship with Burt, the older man who rescued him in the Dials. There's a quiet but stirring scene when Vane opens up to Burt that completely elevated the story. More moments like that would have turned this into a 5 star read for me.

Granted, there is a LOT to unpack here, and I'm still not convinced that the structure the author uses
--introduce the conflict involving the MC's of the next entry in the series, and continue the saga of Louis and Evie, while simultaneously trying to give proper weight to the current MCs' issues--works. The revelation made just before the 70% mark leaves the reader with deep issues to consider, and I'm not sure I truly forgave Vane as Kathy does. If he'd once tried to talk with the woman he'd wronged, that needed to be a bigger part of the storyline, not just glossed over in a footnote. There needed to be groveling or at least plenty of introspection involved, POSSIBLE SPOILER............particularly since this woman is not a stranger to readers of this series. I felt a sadness after reading the book that I could not shake involving his unresolved (likely unresolvable) relationship with his child.

Tbh, I'm not sure why the author choose to start the book with Vane already on the way to being reformed; I think I would have been more comfortable with the character's drastic arc if the plot had unfolded in more of a linear fashion. However, she is a strong enough storyteller that I wanted to believe in Vane at the end.

The bottom line: This might not be the book to pick if you're looking for a simple, lighthearted HEA. But if you're looking for a Regency romance dealing with themes that are a bit deeper than usual, Emma Leech is still a good choice.

Note: steam level 3. (Not to give away spoilers, but there is a spicy scene between 2 other characters way before Kathy and Vane have their love scene.)

This was fantastic, and the first book from the last few in this series where the main couple’s relationship was super believable. This one entirely felt more deep and emotional. I really liked Max and Kathy together - for the most part, which I will explain below. And as always - I’m living for the Louis and Evie chapters. This book gave us some major content for this two and I could hardly breathe reading their scenes!!

Kathy is adopted and un-titled (Minerva is her mom!). Max is an Earl with a horrific past - he was an absolutely devil with revelry, whores, etc. - but has done a complete 180° after a near death experience. I love that Kathy had been there nursing Max back to health. That bit of the story and the charity work they are doing was super sweet and a great way to show their development.

BUT there is a massive issue I have with this book. Stop here if you don’t want to see some pretty big spoilers.

So - we find out Max is actually the father of Grace’s child. Grace had the book where she got pregnant, the father tossed her to the side, and she ended up marrying a local gentleman farmer as a cover up (Sterling Oak). My review of that book actually predicted this would happen - I actually didn’t like that book because I was so worried the father (unknown during that book) would end up being a live interest for one of the other girls. And yup - here we are. The whole situation is horrible and as soon as I saw the story was going this way I almost DNF’d. I hate that Max has a child, not to mention its a bastard with one of Kathy’s sweet friends and he almost ruined Grace’s life. To me this takes away so much of the love story because I can’t get past what he did. Sure, he had an amazing redemption, but adding in the bastard child with Grace bit is going too far. Sure it helped with the drama levels and this seemed way more fast paced and exciting that usual - but it’s still really disappointing…. Not to mention we now see that Pip has a bastard too. Any unwanted pregnancy/child situation in romance novels is a no for me personally.

This doesn’t effect my rating of this book of course, but as a note I don’t think I’m ready for the next book. The blurb
is interesting but Rosamund gets involved with a married man. I just don’t want to read a book even touching that type of trope. I’ll still read it of course, but I can’t say I’m anticipating a good read.

His Redemption

I absolutely loved Kathy and Max’s story. Max went from being extremely bad to wanting to change his life after he was stabbed and left for dead. If it wasn’t for Burt and Pike he would have died. But when Hart and Kathy visits Burt she wants to help with their mysterious guess. When Max confesses his life to the voice from beyond, Kathy is so appalled she never comes back.
Months later they meet again, he swears he has seen Kathy before and Kathy is nothing but rude and angry with him. Max thinks he’s wronged he in some way.
When she finds out Max is the anonymous benefactor for the children’s home she tries to see him in another light.
A beautifully written story with a wonderful ending.

This was so, so boring and misguided that I rated it one star even though the prose is...ok. I love a good redeemed rake/villain (The Luckiest Lady in London, A Lady’s Code of Misconduct, & Devil in Winter are some of my favorite books), and I have enjoyed this author’s books in the past, so I was surprised how little I liked this one.

The author made a mistake, opening with an offscreen confession of his misdeeds, and only revealing his most heinous act near the end. I assume her goal was to keep the reader and the heroine in suspense. But she ended up making the hero’s attempts to hold himself accountable completely unconvincing. The only way to become a better person is to look at your errors unflinchingly and to center your victims, but he didn’t do that, so his guilty internal monologue throughout was muddled. Instead of empathizing with him, and being fascinated by his transformation into a good man, I was rolling my eyes at all his blubbering.

The heroine was tedious in a different way: she was charmless. When we meet her, she falls in love (infatuation) with the unconscious hero, just because he is handsome, and then resents him for waking up and telling her that he is a bad man. If that encounter had occurred when she was a little girl, I would’ve been more interested in the implications of it, but because she was grown, it made me roll my eyes. Otherwise, she just lacked charisma, spark, or depth, despite the adoption trauma backstory, which should’ve been really compellingly. Also, the way her quest for independence was written felt very paint-by-numbers. It was too similar to other stories that were written so much better. I love a heroine who strikes out on her own, but this one was just...flat.

I know this author is capable of writing stories that do make me teary-eyed. But she’s very hit or miss, and her recent books have been mostly misses for me. This one felt like such a waste of time.

Another Wonderful, Entertaining & Romantic Book.

This Story was Absolutely Wonderful.

The Characters were just as wonderful & the Story is well written. Katherine (Kathy) & Maxwell (Max) didn't meet in a ballroom or any social event, he had been stabbed & left to die in an alley in Seven Dials.

The man taking care of Max knows Kathy's brother & by accident she had followed her brother & finds herself caring for Max.

I am so looking forward to RossamuRosamund Adolphus & Viscount Hargreaves Story next in this series.

I loved the girls who dare series but daring daughters has been a rollercoaster for me. This book kinda left me sad like some of the conflict in Vane’s past could never be resolved.

This is interesting as it touches on events of other stories and harm visited upon people - it *is* interesting to get the other side of things, and I love a good redemption arc. Specifically in this I appreciate that it is not the person he hurt that is the vehicle for his redemption. There's something really satisfying about reading romance where the characters rise to levels of adulthood that just don't quite seem possible in the real world - although well they should overall.

Fantastic part to an excellent series

Anyone that liked the original series will adore the Daring Daughters, with it following a very familiar pathway. This book, particularly, has a few really lovable and engaging characters. Max, the reformed rake who cannot forgive himself, and we see more of Grace and Sterling, which I'm so happy about because I loved her in the earlier book and this brings her alive.

Rakish behaviour, redemption, romance

Another unputdownable offering from Ms Leech. A wonderful reveal of a number of characters we have been following through the series so far was particularly satisfying! Finally getting a glimpse of Louis and Evie was utterly captivating and will have us all clamouring for the next and the next and the next in the series .

Maxwell and Kathy

Another gem from Emma Leech. This is a beautiful story about forgiveness and love, and different perspectives. I love how Emma Leech writes her books with poignant lessons that everyone could learn from, but its still written for the 19th century. Wonderful and fulfilling. I am excited for the next book in the series.

A beautiful romance, plus the start of two more to look forward to plus what will Pop do?.Will be eventually confess to his father? Plus it looks as if Louis will have to prepare for a fight with the mysterious Wolf. All this in one book. I really like how Emma drops hints as to what is coming up.in future books, plus we got to know Hartley and Hurt and Pike.

This was similar to a soap opera...let's say All My Children. A lot of characters, lots of scenes and ots of storylines. I found the background storylines better than the main. Didn't feel any real chemistry between Kathleen and Lord Vane.
