I'm cursed, and I have no one to blame but myself.
My mama used to say I could con the pants off the Devil himself. That was markedly untrue.
Years ago, as a young witch with a reckless streak, I summoned the King of Gluttony and tried to con the big bad. It didn't work, and instead of riches beyond my wildest dreams, I got a curse that makes every man that kisses me addicted beyond measure. Even a drop of my spit is enough.
Mr. Bub, King of Gluttony and overall AH, has me on a tight leash. Just one more job, and he'll lift my curse. (So he says) The problem is... it's never just one more job.
When the Steward of the Red City outside of Baton Rouge needs help, Beelzebub volunteers me for the job. I've got one week to find two demons that have gone missing in the city, or it's my neck on the chopping block. I don't think Mr. Bub will eat me if I fail, but I can't be sure.
It's such a shame that Legion and his merry band of cocky men seem to have their sights set on distracting me from my task.
I can't let anyone get close. Not even beautiful, if not annoying, demons. The second they taste me, they'll become addicted.
The problem is: No one ever wants me; they only want the curse.
**SPIT is a reverse harem, #whychoose romance with a happy ending. It is a standalone paranormal romance.
Michaela Haze is a dog lover, mum of two, and a writer of paranormal, urban fantasy romance. In her spare time, she eats copious amounts of Japanese food.
opposite problem of the last book I dnfd. Too much plot wheres the smut. And I'm pretty sure this book isn't going to be a series which is rlly disappointing bc I felt like we didn't really get to know any of the characters and I liked em all. I can't even pick a fav like idk who these ppl are. It was still good tho I just want more.
Firstly the not so good things. The red text, not a fan and boy was that a shock for the eyes. Typos and predictability. I really didn't like Katalina.
I really liked this one. 12% in and I just wanted to keep going. It was yes, this is the author of Dead ringer. This is more like it. I really like shadows. The gluttony shadow was unique and I'm gutted it didn't last until the end. I liked the dynamic with the guys, that was interesting. Trey was my favorite, the lazy boy getting stuff done. I really liked protective, cuddly monster Mars, but he wasn't in it long enough. Covered some dark themes. Not sure how I felt about the mother and sister, especially the sister with their neglect. I am curious on the Elemental tours so looking forward to Rose's book.
The end had me hoping for some family dinners or daddy daughter moments.
FMC - Alexis Boudaire Guys - Ichi Legion, Sev, Trey, Arlo, Quinn and Mars Bad guy - Camio, Katalina
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The story was a little hard to follow because there was no years after something happened. We just had to know. I loved this story but sad to say it's medium spice. There are only 3 times seggsual things happen. It doesn't take away from the story and I would love a sequel but from my stand point there are only 3 sex scenes. The ending was when the harem got together but nothing other than that. Also 2 of the demons you don't meet until almost the ending of the book so you don't know "who" they are. I'll say this it was a good read. Medium spice and bare minimum reverse harem. Also if you are going to refer to sexual assault you should go for it and not tip toe. We didn't know what her boyfriend who kissed her did and we kind of still don't. If you are going to bring that up then elaborate. I'm not knocking on the book, buy it you will like it but simple things could be wrapped up.
This is my first book from this author, and it won't be my last. I enjoyed this story and its characters a lot. Alexis (Lexi) is a null witch sent on a job to help Ichi, Arlo, Quinn and Severin find Mars and Quinn. There's more to Lexi than what meets the eyes and when a huge secret regarding her father is revealed everything comes full circle. I enjoyed the guys a lot and I liked how things played out with all of them however, I wish there was a little more to it when it came to Cecil. I knew Katalina was a little sketchy with the moves she was making especially when they showed up at her friend's door, but I never would have guessed she played such a huge part in backstabbing Ichi. This story was funny and steamy, had suspense and a HEA. I'm looking forward to getting to know Lexi's twin Rose more in her book and reading how things play out with her and the guys on tour.
A more in depth and articulate review may be to come, but for now I’ll say this:
This book felt more like an introduction to these characters and their story rather than their actual story, as it lacked any real exploration of the individual characters and the romance itself. I could see where connections between the characters should and/or could be, but I never actually felt them.
I love reading Michaela Haze! All of the books are interesting and unique but I like how they have similar elements. Spit takes a unique story line and freaking sprints with it! If you are hoping for instant sexy times, you might be a bit let down because this is a slowwww burn, but man it is worth it if you enjoy your books a little on the but twisted, but super interesting side, which I personally LOVE! I really loved this book and recommend reading it ASAP!
I really wanted to rate this one 5 stars. Seven sins is my kryptonite. The story was good and I enjoyed the story. The only problems I really had were editing errors, such as wrong word usage, like spell check happened and replaced Sev with Sec and savor with savior.
Alexis was born into a witch coven where she was a null, she is able to take the magic from the other witches which means she grew up on the outskirts from the coven. Lonely at age 10 she is put into a “contract” with the king of hell , Beezlebub and shes is cursed. She cant swap any form of bodily “juices” with someone without enthralling them but then when bub calls in his monthly favor from her to send her to a Red City, a demon city, to investigate two missing demons she is finding it hard to resist giving into the tempations that await her there.
Spoilers ahead:
There were a lot of fucking typos in this book. That aside the story went no where and everywhere quickly. Alexis is investigating (at the behest of Bub- who side note ends up being her father and isnt really in contract with her at all she’s just half demon so her shadow that she thought was part of his protection was actually just her demon side that she hadnt accepted or knew about yet.) the disappearance of two stewards of a red city which is a demon city. Pride, cannot feel Envy or Greed, theyve both gone missing and he cannot find them through the bond that all 7 of the deadly sins demons share. The story of why they share a bond is all over the place…they were angels, who were thrown from heaven and 6 of the 7 were so injured that Pride took them into himself and then pleaded with someone or another to give them bodies outside of his own in return for 100 years of their servitude as stewards in the city. Then turns out that the “bad” guy was gluttony who they assumed had died for some weird reason wanted to kill Pride and was doing some hinky shit with his pheremones and magic to make addictive cow meat…i dont know…this book plot was everywhere…maybe I’m just too stupid to follow it lol…but then she’s all wrapped up in “i cant kiss/fuck/sweat on yall” cause you’ll go crazy with addiction to me…but somehow depsite all that they still all end up wanting her? Even the ones who only know her for like 2 days in a cell…like the connections were not connecting enough for the huge 7 people orgy at the end of the book. Like it was just out of place.
This is my fourth or fifth Michaela Haze book, and while she has a very clear and consistent formula for her books, that doesn't mean I'm not having a fantastic time reading them.
I had a similar comment for her other seven sins book, which is just that it can be pretty challenging to bond with the MMCs when there are seven of them, and it's a standalone book. (Don't get me wrong, I love standalones.) I have definitely felt more invested in the relationships in her books with fewer characters, where I felt like they all got a little more facetime with the FMC.
The FMC in this one is particularly great. I do wish we had gotten to explore a few themes a bit more, but again that's the hazard of a standalone book that's not trying to be 700 pages. Her connection to Quinn is particularly sweet, and I do wish we had been able to explore that one more. I also wish we had gotten to see a scene of a confrontation with her mother, but oh well.
The spice in this one is definitely slow burn tension, but it was the right amount for this particular story. I DO wish that Haze would write just one absolutely plotless spicey book, because the spice scenes are always really good, just sometimes not frequent enough!
I have been flowing this author for a bit now, since I read Dead Ringer. The standalones are in an interconnected world but it's not necessary to read any of the others to understand the world. I have to admit, that I almost skipped this one because of the unfortunate title. There is nothing appealing to me about saliva. But I've also learned that this author has an unfortunate habit of picking covers/titles that I dislike immensely, then delivering some fantastic stories within. So I've started just diving into her books and trying to ignore the covers (or in this case title). It was definitely worth it for this one.
I love Lexy. She is a totally unapologetic badA. She's had a really rough life so far and is incredibly lonely. When she's sent to Red City she's wholly unprepared for the mess she gets thrown into.
Her demons are each struggling with their own past. She's exactly what they need, even if some of them aren't ready to admit it right away.
Bottom line, this is definitely worth the read. Just ignore the cover/title.
Ok firstly this is my first read by Michaela Haze And I have to say I think I made a pretty good first choice. I can’t wait to read more within this background of stories that are linked together.
Secondly this has been one unique and brilliant twist to a standalone. Just reading the title had me wondering what and why would you call your book spit but makes so much sense once you read it.
Lexi is fun, different and one of a kind for sure. Love that she isn’t a girly girl. Rather have a collection of weapons that shoes ☺️
You pretty much pick up on who is who but still has a few surprises and shocks that you didn’t see coming.
This is definitely a perfect read for anybody who wants something in the paranormal section, even though it’s RH it’s slow burner and literally nothing too heavy, end is where the gang get together 😜 It’s pretty light for a paranormal read too. It’s entertaining and worth the binge.
I'm sorry, I've read other books from.this author but this story was horrible. It lacked alot! Lexi did not involve herself w men bc of her curse okay so the whole story she's fighting off men and then at the end she's having sex w 6 men?!?!? Like what the hay? The twist at the end about who bezzuzzle bub was to lexi was great I just wished it was maybe incorporated more in the story bc he seemed like he had a personality! Lexi could have been a sheet of paper, dull! Legion dull. Arlo dull. Sev flirty. I can't remember the one she got naughty w in the dressing room but just it lacked! There was no depth bc I think the author should have developed these characters and their relationships to us the reader. The describing of red city and who gets let in, the banking system...it's all alot! Towards the end I just wanted it to end!
I really enjoy Michaela Haze stories. Spit was no exception. I loved the slow burn. I liked the guys. I liked the mystery. I didn't like the wrong words all over the place. Quite a few times, I laughed in places I know I wasn't supposed to because of the wrong words.
"Whose voice was that? Husky and wonton." (should be wanton) "Legion liked to play savor" (should be savior)
Who are Husky and wonton? I seriously laughed in this particular spot. Is savor a board game?
I genuinely dislike calling out mistakes in Indie writers stories and I don't usually do it. It is a tough job and I really appreciate the work they do, but in this particular case, these types of mistakes happened too many times and it took me away from the story. I hope it gets it edited and updated to make it a really good story.
First she was cursed, at age 5, when she became a nulll witch. This make her an outcast including her twin sister and mother. Later, without knowing, she was cursed with the sin of gluttony, wich makes it impossible for her kiss anyone. She found out the hard way when kissing her crush. He became obsessed with her to the point of rapin her. This scene is only described by her during the story. It was the unic scene that her mother acts like a mother. I didn't like her mother. Nor the Mr. B. Is a slow burn. She's became a bad ass. And I liked it a lot. Her and the story.
That's the second book from this author [that I read] that lacks editing. Though, it's not as bad as in "Wild Hunt". There, it took me some time to figure out what was going on in a scene. Here, I just stumble a little and move along. The plot and the characters are nice, as usual, so I will continue reading Michaela Haze's books. I have to admit that her books are not that easy to read for a foreigner like me (purely because of the words people don't use much when they talk, like "pockmarked", "besotted", "lambasting"), but I still enjoy them quite a lot.
I give it 5 stars for all the emotions Alexis and the 6 demons made me feel, each and every one of them, but honestly, I would have liked the book to be longer and for the relationships to be handled better, because in the end, I feel like Quinn and Mars felt too rushed and we hardly got to know anything about them in the book, as well as the other demons. I feel like the personalities of all of them needed to be developed more, and I feel like this should have been divided into a duet, so that we could have had more emotion and development of both the characters and the relationships.
There is a Red City and Blood Sugar vibe in this book, and it's absolutely amazing! I love to see more stories in the demon world that Michaela Haze constructed. First, an heroine that takes no shit. She knows the limitation of her curse, but the said curse dont stop her being badass. And the backstory of Legion really melt my heart!!! It's a really slow burn (like I love soooo much), packed with action and mystery. Like every Michaela Haze books, I would give more stars if goodreads would let me.
So far, it's the description of the FMC as a hard ass when it doesn't really translate that way that annoyed me. If her steel toed shoes/boots are mentioned one more time... If her lack of a gun is mentioned one more time...
I wanted to read more on her shadow and all the shenanigans with the facets but the repetition and very little progress marked as a slow burn book just killed the story for me.
I wish this wasn't a stand alone book, though I know there is another book about Alexis' sister. The characters and world were very interesting. I would have loved to see more of these characters with more polt and strife. I do wish there was a bit more from the ending, but there wasn't a ton of loose ends to make it into something fantastical. Overall, I am surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did.
Stayed for the story! I have a few notes of continuity error, she’s being secretive about her curse then suddenly one of the guys knows, and some further lore could’ve been provided (spoilers) they start talking about bonds and mates but I don’t really understand what that meant in the context of the world. All in all though I liked it and wish there was more in the world if not a sequel.
This was a very unique spin on reverse harem stories. Loved the curse that keeps Lexi apart from everyone is also what attracts her to Legion and vise versa. Very good story. Actually read Wild Rose before this but it didn’t make a difference. It may have been better since Rose’s story explains the family dynamics in a bit more detail. Loved both books. Cannot wait to read more from Michaela Haze!!
I really do like the author’s writing, world building and the FMC was so well written I felt like she was a friend. But the MCs in this book were obscure, one sided, and in two characters cases we don’t even meet them until the end and it’s a bit insta love. The big bad is easily defeated as well. The ending felt rushed. Overall tho I really do recommend her books, they’re such good reads.
I will admit I was skeptical about this book at first. However, the blurb in the cover really grab my attention, and I knew I had to give it a try. It kept you guessing throughout and made me finish it with enthusiasm. This is definitely a MUST READ.
Ok, that was dam good! Not just good but very very enjoyable. I had no idea how this would go. So glad I read this! Looking for way to Roses story! That and I really kinda like her father
My fist by this author and it triggered me reading all the rest of her books. I just love the authors style and her dedication to storytelling and world building
The characters have time to develop feelings and connections... I am not sad it took so long for the sexual scenes to start
I absolutely loved this book and was so glad to get it when it was free!! With me snatching such an amazing book up I was able to get emerged into this wonderful authors story telling. I enjoyed it too to bottom and read in one sitting. No one dared to rip the kindle from my hands as I devoured this incredible book. I highly highly recommend.
This book was a very slow burn and it switched from 1st POV to 3rd POV at times. I liked the storyline and the Characters. There was some confusion with the background of the FMC but not such a problem that it mattered.
So exciting, gory, suspense, twisted tales. Loved every second of reading this. Wish i read as series to get the flow of charactors i read rose first and yes standalone does work. 😃
