A pretty fun read, highlighting the complexity of the cultural dance of either being a guest or receiving a guest, and some of the big changes this dance has undergone. The focus on "hospitality" as a recent industry which has to a large extent replaced non-marketised hospitality or "bonds of guesthood" struck me as the most interesting (together with the sweeping change Christianity made in this social interaction). This is also why I avoid using the English term hospitality in this text, having been blemished somewhat by this realisation.
Though Venmans tries to justify focusing only on the West European canon, I think it is a shame to have left out other forms of gastvrijheid, especially as the world has never been as isolated as he seems to insinuate.
