One of those guilty pleasure type book for me

Honestly, I had to read it twice to understand all the things going through book 1,The Chief. Though this book was amazing there were times when I felt kinda uncomfortable.

I mean I won't lie, I expected vigilants with big hearts and possessive persona but all the three men were morally grey. The surprise was unexpected but nice, what I found kinda uncomfortable was that these men sleep with rape, abuse human trafficking survivors. I mean shouldn't a group of vigilante men and women help these survivors to heal their trauma??? But then again perhaps this might be their way of healing since in San Ricardo, sex is consensual and done only with consent and the survivors need it to find their way back 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, the fact that Grey had no qualms with having sex with her men from early on in the book , makes me feel weird. Like the girl was raped and gang raped for almost 6 years, shouldn't she hate sex or atleast be uncomfortable with the topic.
I loved beautiful amazing broken Remo from the very start, and with time liked Chief too, with his commanding and authoritative nature. It took time to like or love Vegas because frankly half the time I felt that his affection towards Grey were just surface level lust. It was not until book 2 The Twins wherein we get their povs that I started liking and then loving the guy. His secret was a nice one, while Remo's secret and his self loathing broke my heart.

Kamila was a nice surprise too. I loved seeing her as a fierce protective strong woman.

Overall I loved and adored the book, I willingly submerged and floated when the book plunged into darkness while cherishing and enjoying when it encompassed with light and love. Definitely a re read. ❤️❤️

This is a dark series with loads of drama, suspense and twists and turns. The characters have lots of depth and intense emotion. The story is fast-paced with plenty of twist and turns, sizzling scenes and plenty of action. I was hooked from beginning to end. I liked it.

Not feeling it.

I just don't know what it was about this book that I didn't get. I normally love dark books with traumatised fmc's, but I just couldn't feel anything for the characters. I felt disconnected from all of them. I'm sorry.

★ “There was no black or white answer in San Ricardo.”★

—>>> This was a dark and twisty series, with all of the main characters needing a reckoning of their pasts, not all easily done. There is a root of this series which stretches out into the Royals of Katantia at times as well, making for a very interesting dual-world series.

This series includes:
GREY: ★ Raw and dark beginnings for Grey ★ —>>> This prequel novella is told from the point of views of two males, the “Assassin” and Máximo Martí, Grey’s husband, and this ties in well with this author’s other series, The Royals, a four-book series you do not have to read to understand this series, but it describes the independent kingdom of Katantia, the backdrop of the kind of depravity Grey is subjected to. This series does wind up back there, eventually, however. All the characters here intertwine significantly. This story is raw and dark beginnings for Grey, and the shaping of the second chance she so desperately needs.

THE CHIEF: ★ Dark and twisted slowly being served ★ —>>> Charles “the Chief” Dane: “My operation stole from various traffickers, but it wasn’t enough. It never would be, but the operation boys and the gated community I commanded loved feeling like heroes. It was their drug, and I was their pusher man.”

Little did he know that a young woman named Grey was going to change the lives of the operatives when she was recovered along with fourteen others before being sold. Placed with Charles, she becomes important to him as well as the twins, Vegas and Remo, as she heals from her past ordeals and acclimates to living in America.

THE TWINS: ★ “Let me be your safe space.” ★ —>>> The focus in this series shifts more to Vegas and Grey, and how he decides he wants her to fit back into their lives. He has a hard time admitting and showing just how much she has come to mean to him, but the other two have no such compunction. SO much happens in this book. There is a lot of backstory emerging for these men, especially Remo, who is suffering from depression and PTSD; a lot of change in the dynamics between them and Grey; and some new revelations which begin more growth in character and closeness. This was my favorite book of the series.

REMO: ★ “This isn’t a challenge to me. You, Grey, even Vegas.” ★. —>>> Remo struggles with PTSD and depression and a past of two heartbreaking experiences he finds very hard to reconcile down to his very soul. His inability to handle the heavy depth of his emotions draws grave concern from them all, but with Grey’s light in their lives and the love and understanding she puts into everyone in her orbit, accepting all as they are, their unique RH dynamic may be something they can all nurture together anew.

“I keep you safe now. Is that understood? Everything that goes on in that intricate head of yours, you share it with me. This isn’t a challenge to me. You, Grey, even Vegas. You’re my life. It’s selfish, but I don’t intend to allow you to slip away from me.”
“Note from the Author: This is the complete San Ricardo series in one box set. It includes: Grey, The Chief, The Twins, and Remo. It treats dark subjects. Content warning list: https://www.arabella-black.com/trigge...

In the debate over prequel first or read The Chief first, this bookset has the prequel first and three novels following. However, despite many people raving about the series in the reviews, I found the toxic environment of the prequel to be off-putting; although I completed it. Book 1 in the series, The Chief, began with a chapter that should have been titled prologue, as it detailed an encounter with the woman from the prequel having sex with the chief while they were sitting on his front porch in the open, and she is naked. It was more of the same carnality without concern that was the premise of the prequel. The prequel, frankly, I think, was written for shock value but didn't add anything meaningful to the series.

The chief happens to be the chief of police of a town of 30,000 people. He's an alcoholic, but he doesn't let that get in the way of his do-gooder mission to rescue trafficked people coming across the southern border. He's organized an Underground Railroad of sorts with his neighbors, and that's how the battered woman from the prequel actually meets him, as one of these refugees. However, she was saved in the prequel by an assassin, who happens to be the chief's neighbor and a part of his rescue operation. But if that guy saved her in the prequel, why did she need to come over the border?

It was all too convoluted for me. I really tried to slog through, but then convinced myself that I have too many books to read to waste time with a bad series. I DNF'd (did not finish) and permanently deleted it from my Kindle. Good riddance!

This reverse harem romance is dark. There are lots of twists and turns, drama, suspense and HEAT. The characters have good chemistry and are very interesting. I enjoy dark stories but didn’t like the beginning at all. It does get a lot better.

I freaking LOVED the Ours boxset. It had some drama, suspense, twists/turns, and some SPICE. It does have some triggers so heed those before reading. It was exactly what I wanted for my dark romance fix!
