Fandom and romance clash in this grumpy/sunshine rom-com from David Slayton.
Hunter wants to reboot Space Rangers, his favorite sci-fi show but Cameron, the creator’s embittered son stands in his way.
When Cameron plots to use Hunter to show the world who his father really was, he learns that being a geek isn’t a bad thing while Hunter learns that your heroes weren't who you thought they were.
To Catch a Geek by David Slayton Contemporary M-M romance. Grumpy sunshine troupe. Childhood actor Cameron wants nothing to do with the fandom that follows the science fiction tv show his father created and his mother starred in. Cameron’s childhood was spent at the filming studio among adults with little actual interaction with his parents. Hunter wants to do a reboot of the sci-fi tv show Space Rangers and has raised funds from his podcast to get the project started. But he needs help from Robot Boy Cameron to move forward. It takes a bit of persuasion and patience but the two come to an agreement and Hunter moves into the pool house to start the research. Cameron and Hunter find they have things in common and a tentative friendship blooms.
Sad and endearing and hopeful. Cameron hasn’t come out publicly and never had the chance with his parents either. It’s too late now that his father is dead, but he tries with his mother and her comment can be construed in a couple of ways. Of course, with his experience, Cameron sees only the negative and it’s heartbreaking. Hunter’s presence and support in many different situations is lovely and loving. I enjoyed this romance and hope that it is eventually published outside the Kiss platform so more hopeful romantics will be able to read it.
Chapter heading that I had to share after laughing out loud during my reading: Someone figured out my password. Now I have to rename my dog. 4.5
To Catch a Geek by David R. Slayton 5 Stars NEW I love David R. Slayton’s Adam Binder series and was excited to find out he had written a rom com (my favorite genre.) To Catch a Geek did not disappoint. Hunter is an admitted geek. He is a super fan of the Sci Fi show Space Rangers, so much so that he runs a very successful podcast about it. His podcast followers have raised $2,000,000 to reboot the show. Cameron is the son of the creator of the show and the lead female actor. He played Robot Boy on the show. Cameron’s childhood was difficult. He spent most of his time on set but not really with his parents. He owns the rights to the show and refuses to have anything to do with it. His answer to the reboot is a resounding no. Eventually Hunter and Cameron decide to work together on a side project.
To Catch a Geek is a character driven story. Cameron has a lot of issues due to his upbringing. He never came out to his parents. His relationship with both was tenuous. His dad made him feel like he was not important to him. Hunter has a loving family who accepted him when he came out. He has always felt like the odd man out, however. His brothers and father are athletic and didn’t know what to do with a geeky kid. Both men bring baggage to the relationship. It was great to see them grow into the people they are meant to be. Of course not all was smooth sailing and the grand gesture at the end of the book was fantastic. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mm rom com. Right now the book is only available on the Kiss app. Hopefully it will eventually be released wide.
