For nine years young women attempted to get the Master of Pemberley to marry them. Some even resorted to drastic actions. By the time Darcy arrived at Netherfield Park, he was thoroughly jaded and had no respect for women. Then he met Elizabeth Bennet, a young lady like no other. During her stay at Netherfield, nursing her sick sister, he mistakenly assumes that the teasing manner in which Elizabeth takes him to task is flirtatious, making him think that she would try to compromise him. But who will compromise whom? Will they be able to overcome their misunderstandings?
Another Good Yarn by Salier My rating 4.5 rounded up
Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man pursued for his wealth, standing in society and his handsome looks. When, as a young man, he is compromised by the sister of a trusted friend who demands he marry her, Darcy adamantly refuses to marry any woman who so easily would forfeit her virtue at the risk of her own reputation. This episode results in a loss of respect and trust for women in general.
In this variation, Caroline is determined to have him, until Bingley and Darcy come up with a plan to “catch her a husband”. They write an advertisement for a husband that includes a “list of Caroline’s qualities” which Bingley presents to her and threatens to publish unless she changes her ways. Talk about blunt! Caroline is shaken. This book is worth reading for the advertisement alone. Bingley is strong in this story, which I love, even though he burns the ad. I couldn’t help but imagine a scenario in which it was actually sent. (snort)
Because up to this point in his life it has been his reality, Darcy assumes any woman showing interest in him is seeking a compromise. Unfortunately, this will lead to misunderstandings with the one woman in whom he is actually interested—Elizabeth, of course. When he finds her in the library and, “assumes” she has devised a scheme to compromise him and is waiting there for him, he quickly finds he is quite mistaken in the matter. Oh, Darcy. He then runs to London where he confesses his folly to Lady Matlock and Colonel Fitzwilliam who bring him back to Netherfield to help salvage things. Then Lady Catherine arrives with Anne and tries to compromise Darcy!
It seems a bit all over the place, but it works. I was quite entertained with the twists—Wickham is actually a legitimate curate, and while he and Darcy aren’t the best of friends, they are not really enemies either.
Everyone gets a happy ending except Lady Cat.
I enjoyed this very much. A light read with good writing and dialogue and, a few giggles. Recommend.
I really don't know what to say about this book...
Lots of OOC behavior In some ways it is a Darcy / Wickham freaky Friday style flip except there's no magic involved Darcy is a DOUCHE and Wickham is a gentle cleric
Also there are enough plots for 8 books
Plot 1: Darcy has been repeatedly compromised over the past 9 years but refuses to be caught in the Parson's mousetrap so I assume he has a string of bastards all over England.
Plot 2: Caroline is bound and determined to wed Darcy
Plot 3: Wickham is the new cleric in Meryton
Plot 4: Lady (Matlock) is come to Netherfield to help Darcy land Lizzy, also chill Caro, calm Mrs. Bennet etc she's like the lower class whisperer
Plot 5: Lady Catherine is come to Merton to help Anne land Darcy
Plot 6: Mr Collins has come to Meryton to extend an olive branch but none of Bennet's daughters measure up
There are more there was so much going on in this story I was dizzy.
Fitzwilliam Darcy has been chased for years with over 60 attempts at compromise and he as no patience for it, almost to the point of cruelty. Imagine his surprise when he meets a girl who doesn't make and attempt or even like him! Elizabeth Bennet finds Darcy handsome, but understands he feels above his company.
This variation allows Darcy to admit his feelings and confess them to his cousin and aunt. Convincing him to soften his thoughts and to help him win Elizabeth becomes a family affair. Communication becomes the key to their relationship. The harsh reactions they each have to situations or statements, jumping to conclusions, dwelling, finding time to speak, working it out was on repeat in this story. Once they worked it all, they finally did find their happily ever after.
I did enjoy the story, but at times I wanted to slap either or both of them.
An attempt to trap Darcy by compromising him occurs that jades his perception of women. Therefore, he thinks every women is out to attempt to trap him and he takes advantage of this by following through and compromising these women (sleeps with them) but then refuses to marry them after. Because these women cannot say anything publicly as this will ruin their reputation (Darcy makes it clear he still won’t marry them even if it becomes public), he gets away with an untarnished reputation while enjoying the favors of the fairer sex. Therefore, when he finds himself in the library alone with Elizabeth, he mistakenly thinks she is attempting to compromise him. Big mistake, followed by a bigger slap in the face and set down of his perception!!
The premise of the story was very intriguing and had me excited to read this story. However, the execution fell short. DNF at just over halfway through the book. Despite this twist of a jaded Darcy, I felt he was still OOC and very dishonorable. Sleeping with women THEN telling them he refuses to marry them is ungentlemanly and something only a rake would do (even if it was then women who were attempting the compromise to trap him). Despite the attempt at a compromise, I cannot imagine Darcy becoming this person nor would I like or champion for such a version. Mrs Bennet, Mr Collins, and even Colonel Fitzwilliam were OOC and too crass. Some of the things said by Collins and the Colonel were too unbelievable and ridiculously rude (see shared highlights). These changes were too much for me and therefore I was unable to enjoy the story. If you are able to get past these, you may still like and enjoy this book
This Darcy is OOC in MHO. In this story he encounters compromise after compromise multiple times throughout the years. His stance is that he will not offer for any of them, but he also will not tell, and the lady's family is forced to also keep quiet as to demand a wedding publicly would only expose her and her family to ruin. So, he is jaded in his opinion about young and single ladies.
Thus, upon meeting and being attracted to Elizabeth Bennet and thinking she is no different he acts upon his own impulses and kisses her AND receives a slap. Thus, Darcy finally has to make some adjustments in his attitude, if only to this lady.
Darcy has to make over his attitudes and his behaviors in this story is he wants to pursue the attraction Elizabeth Bennet presents.
Other familiar characters are also present. Caroline Bingley and Lady Catherine are basically as we know them from canon.
This was an interesting read even though Darcy was not his usual self. As the title hints it is "inspired" by P&P not a true variation.
Another excellent story from Sydney Salier! All about Mr Darcy and his background before he ended up with the Netherfield Party. So many women have tried to compromise him, over the years, he has become a bit of, yes! An Accidental Rake! Read this great story to see who tries to compromise who, because it's a bit of a surprise!
I enjoyed reading this story very much. I loved that Caroline Bingley becomes a calmer person who realized that she's never getting Pemberley. Wickhams much different because he did become a minister and was contemptuous of Darcy's refusal to marry those women who attempted to compromise him. The Countess comes to Netherfield to help Darcy's courtship of Elizabeth and managed to improve everyone's manners and eventually their lives.
SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***
>>Rating: mature teen due to adult themes discussed >>Angst Level: slight to medium, mainly due to aggravation, dense Darcy >>Source: Borrowed from KU on 11-6-23 and I volunteered to leave a review. 29-chapters >>Trope: Alternate Universe where Mr. Darcy is an Accidental Rake.
What do you do when a willing female crawls into your bed unbidden? Well, if you are a red-blooded English male, you do what every red-blooded English male would do. What do you do when a lady falls at your feet… literally? You let her fall, of course. What you do not do is marry the brazen… fill in the blank. Ever since Fitzwilliam Darcy became the master of Pemberley, he learned too quickly that he could not trust women. But then, their brothers, fathers, uncles, and any male responsible for them were no better than the matchmaking mamas of the ton. Darcy has lost count as to how many attempts had been made to compromise him.
Thus, it was a jaded Darcy who walked into the Meryton Assembly… shields up. He refused to give consequence to any female within the building. Little did he know that his life would change forever due to a pair of fine eyes in the face of a beautiful woman. It would be a long hard trek but Darcy soon discovered a woman worthy.
I think you can always count on Salier for a HEA. The villains are never that bad and Darcy and Bingley usually redeem them selves pretty quickly. Her stories are the perfect antidote to overwhelming angst present in some stories
I only made it 40% through the book. This Mr D is pretty much behaving like Mr W and I am not a fan! Reached my limit with her talk with J after the library scene.
Darcy decided to “slake his desires” with the women who try to compromise him and then inform them that he has no intentions of marrying them. So them taking advantage of him=him taking advantage of them in his book. This is not the honorable Darcy so if you don’t like that don’t read this book. Elizabeth just accepts that Darcy has a past even though he tried to compromise her and was not planning on marrying her at first. Not my cup of tea.
This book was too fun low on angst & good on laughs. Not to mention, I’ve read read almost every crazy iteration of P&P, but I will say this is the very first where Wickham was actually a man of the cloth & not in any way an antagonist. Crazy. I also rather liked the idea of Darcy as a embarrassed casa nova.
I usually love Ms Salier variations but I’m not a fan of P&P variations that are missing epilogues to give a glimpse into the fictional future lives of ODC. Also, for as many times as Darcy was a willing participant in the compromise attempts in this variation, I find it hard to believe that not one woman became pregnant and later came back to demand support?
Sydney Salier has become an automatic purchase for me. Her books are like guilty pleasures. They're not great literature, but it's just so darn fun reading them. This is the best one yet. While Darcy is still at Cambridge, he experiences his first attempt by a woman to compromise him into marriage, and subsequent attempts harden him into a cynical misogynist. When he arrives in Hertfordshire to help Bingley, he has a terrible attitude about any woman who so much as gives him a second glance. Caroline Bingley is the first victim of his sour attitude, and Darcy doesn't spare her feelings when he rejects her advances. At the Meryton assembly, Darcy dances with several women, including Elizabeth, just to do his duty as a gentleman, but Elizabeth overhears him speaking to Bingley about the inferiority of the people in the neighborhood. Although Elizabeth enjoyed their dance, as well as his intelligent conversation, she gets turned off by his arrogance and conceit.
One of the most amusing things in this author's books is the way her characters speak very forthrightly, more than you usually encounter in JAFF. Her characters are more bold, and that's satisfying. In this variation, Darcy likes Elizabeth right away, even though he has the usual reservations about her fortune and connections, and Elizabeth likes Darcy as well, in spite of what she overheard, because Darcy is friendlier in this version.
The trouble is all in Darcy's head, and it's so bad as to be almost icky. The icky part is that Darcy has no qualms about taking advantage of women who sneak into his bed to compromise him. He'll enjoy the sex and then send the women on their way, unsuccessful in their attempts to snag him. I guess this just feels wrong for our beloved, upright, honorable Darcy. Another thing about this book that felt wrong was the treatment of the Wickham character. He was just a strange guy.
However, the romance is lovely. This is one of those books wherein it seems like almost everyone is getting married before the end. The book is well written and well edited. I enjoyed it immensely. I recommend it highly.
I thoroughly enjoyed the new and different personalities given to several of the original characters from P&P. This is another light-hearted book that made me smile and laugh in every chapter if not every other page. Everyone deserves the fun reads by Salier, and this is one more to add to my collection. There will be no discussion of the story to avoid introducing spoilers so every reader can enjoy the journey with Elizabeth and Darcy.
If you expect lots of angst, steamy scenes, or dark themes, this is not the book for you. For all others this is a wonderful story with both overt and subtle humor. Enjoy!
I couldn’t put the book down. Honestly the idea of having Darcy hunted by women is not a new one, however this book goes into details and paints a very different picture from the others. It’s no wonder Darcy has no difficulty feeling disdain for the opposite sex. Caroline Bingley is one of those hunting him, until her brother gives the honest truth. You cant miss that scene it was hilarious. Wickham is curate, Collins is love and Hurst is awake. I won’t ruin it for you but oh my, this was creative, engaging, and yes, funny. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I am just now beginning to read P&P variations that dieviate from the original storyline. I have, for the most part, enjoyed the fresh take on Darcy and Elizabeth. This is my favorite so far! The Mr. Collins storyline was quite a read. I have been in love with the P&P story for decades, most of that time I would have disliked all the variations and stayed with series like The Pemberley Chronicles. I would not have been able to appreciate the imagination and fun. If you are at a stage where you prefer the characters to remain as you know them I would recommend holding off on fanciful variations, however this book is a good place to start if you want to imagine and enjoy more.
Mr.Darcy has become hardened by the scheming of so called friends, grasping ladies and their parents
This contributed to a more severe and less secure gentleman. He sees a potential compromise everywhere and in everyone. Then he meets the Bennet family and is further confused and intrigued by one, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, who couldn't care less about his wealth. She challenges him with her honesty and intelligence. This is an enjoyable tale as we finally see adjustments to some behaviors in the Bennet family we have longed for. We also see a different Mr. Wickham. Quite refreshing. I'm sure you'll find this story very enjoyable, I certainly did.
I am not against changing the nature of beloved characters for the sake of creating fan fiction but here, unfortunately, it is so badly written / worded that it's hard to read.
Lot of anachronism, poor attempt at character description & depiction ( Yes, yes we get it Darcy is " exceedingly " handsome and rich ), bad grasp of storytelling ( the author does not know time, places, distances, weather, it's all over and it happens within minutes ).
No build up or emotions, just a succession of scenes and constant use of generic descriptions to go thru them " Elizabeth did this, then Darcy did that, then they went there and then Jane said that ".
I laughed out loud many times while reading this a Pride and Prejudice variation. This is not canon.
Once again, she has a winner. The Lady Matlock is awesome. She can read a room and come up with winning strategies. Darcy is an accidental rake just like the title implies, but there are compromising reasons for it. Mr. Wickham is different.
I liked the book but there was one aspect to Mr. Darcy's character that I found disturbing which is why I could not give this a 4 rating. I've read a lot of variations (hundreds) and sometimes Darcy is a rake but usually not with gentlewomen. In this story, same premise that women are always trying to trap him into marriage with a compromise but instead of staying away from such situations - he sleeps with these women (not all but most) and justifies it as saying that if they want to be loose its not his fault and he doesn't seem to think anything is wrong with that behavior for most of the story. I just didn't like that attitude.
The twist in this story makes it a delightful romp. Darcy refuses to be compromised, and Wickham is the sanctimonious prig he always accused Darcy of being in OP&P. Lizzy performs her set-down of Darcy in the most amusing way, IMHO. This is a great cost-afternoon-with-cocoa read.
An unusual premise and an unlikeable Darcy begins this variation inspired by author Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Sydney Salier. I won’t spoil the story but I enjoyed it.
A fun read, I'm not one to laugh out loud much, but I had a couple of good chuckles with this story. Wickham was a SURprise, not sure about this, but I don't like giving away surprises so just to say it was a very pleasant story.
I really enjoyed the mixing of the personality of the main characters . This is a quick read, and well written. The main just of the p&p is still there but a few twist.
Pretty cruel Darcy. He keeps getting comprised so he leans into it and starts ruining maidens and then refusing marriage. He tries to do it to Lizzy. I think the author meant for it to be funny? But Darcy comes across pretty bad.
I always enjoyed Mr Seller's work. He has a delightfully skewed sense of humor and his stories reflect that. When I want something to smile about, his books are a sure bet.
Mr Darcy is fed up with all tre women if the ton trying to get him in there bed and gets the wrong idea about Elizabeth and soon finds out that she his not one of those who want to do that no matter what he ends up with her giving him a slap when she is at Netherfield.
