Preston Whitley was the man the Devil ran from.

D’yavol Smerti, that’s what the Bratva called me. I had other names. To the Italians I was the Ghost. The Cartel, The Shadow. For others I was simply the solution to a problem. But for her, I was so much more.

Marnie Dupire made a mistake when she confronted me in Chase’s tattoo parlor, but she fucked up when she piqued my interest. It should’ve all come to an end two years ago with a bullet and foil flower. Instead I ended up following her, wondering what else she was hiding. Oh and my Little Bird was hiding a lot.

She claimed that I was a dangerous, cold and uncaring monster, and maybe she was right? But I knew who the quiet little church girl really was. I’d not only seen the beast lurking inside her, I wanted to play with it. The only thing more terrifying then a sociopath’s devotion…

Was when it turned into love.

Don’t draw attention to yourself, that was the motto I lived by. Until Preston Whitley set his sights on me. He had no idea who he was messing with. The greatest trick the devil played was convincing the world he didn’t exist. But I saw him. I saw them all.

So if Preston wanted to play this game with me, fine. There was a saying in chess, a knight on the rim is grim. I’d move my queen and wait for The Order of Ravens and Wolves knight to attack. Before he knew what was happening, I’d have led him into checkmate. One step closer to my ultimate goal.

The King of Kings himself. Louis Kessler.

And they all came tumbling down.

4.5 til the epilogue

Really??? The guy is so obsessed with Marnie that he would allow no one to touch her but the final scene with them he takes her to s$x room to find a brunette in the bed to “play” with???????
He tells her I tell you what to do but you tell her what to do?
Ruined…. Didn’t follow the characters personality. At all. Loved the book, solid 4.5 til this.
I really hate it when an author tries to spice it up but ruins the book instead. It had great spice, didn’t need this.
Ruined what I thought of their relationship.
If it was a so so book I wouldn’t care so much, but this was a great book till this scene, ending the book open ended.
Unless the future bonus shows no sexual interaction between the three and instead they do what they do best instead.
Otherwise, this author is on dnra list, do not read again.

ALL MY REVIEWS CAN BE FOUND ON MY BLOG: ABSTRACT BOOKS

line

Star Rating : 4 / 5 Stars

POV : Dual

Cliffhanger : None

Hero : Preston

Heroine : Marie

Pace of the story : Moderate

Angst Rating : 7/10

Heat Rating : 6/10

Triggers Involved : Dub Con , Non Con , kidnapping , manipulation

Plot Summary :
Preston was the man everyone feared. There was always something unhinged about him . All he knew was that he got happiness through torture. That is until he captured himself a little bird. Now her screams are even better and capturing her might just be his biggest accomplishment.

Marnie knows life is not easy. Being in a home where rules are equal to life and death , she knows how fragile people are . Her chaotic existence took a turn when she found herself in the way of a predator. Preston Whitley was a man everyone told tales about. He was the horror people knew to stay away from. Then why was he so enamored with her? It was a topic of tension.

Because gaining Preston's attention might be the very end of Marnie .

Overall Opinion :
Omg , Preston is here! Have you guys ever met a certain broody side character who is the most unhinged and the most secretive? That was Preston for me from the start of this series. I knew this story would be explosive and definitely something worth waiting for!

Preston and Marnie are everything I wanted and so much. They have a tale that I liked so much. The author certainly did not disappoint. We also get to meet our favorite side character and I certainly live for their banter.

This one is a standalone with a lot of triggers like dub con , non con , kidnapping and past trauma as well. Definitely recommending this one to all the dark romance loving people out there.

That ending 😌

I felt like Preston’s book took forever but it was well worth the wait.

The banter between Preston and Marnie was hilarious at times.
Oh … and I would love to be invited to a future Whitley dinner party.

And that ending was great.

My only complaints would be I think the villain the end wasn’t explained well enough and the showdown was rushed. Also … what happened to Ava?

I am writing this through literal tears, so if I spell anything wrong that is why.

I am so sad that the series is over, but what a ride it was. The fight that Marnie had inside of her was such a powerful thing to read, Preston realizing his obsession wasn’t as simple as possession was so well done.

The vengeance he not only takes for her but helps her to achieve on her own was wonderful to read, if Tara wanted to write a second book for each of the boys I wouldn’t be upset about, I don’t think I am mentally ready to leave this world.

So well done, and heart shattering,

I loved it, Preston and Marnie are perfect for each other. I would've preferred the last two chapters been different but it doesn't really take away from the rest of the book.
I don't usually split up my star ratings this way, but...4¾ stars

I think it's safe to say, most if not all fans of this series have been waiting for Preston’s story… and d4mn was this book worth the wait. Their story wasn’t what I was expecting…it was better. 🤩

Over the past 5 books, we’ve seen enough of Preston to know he is not someone you want to mess with…yes he’s hot but he’s also a dangerous s0ci0path who ki||s for money…and for fun.

MeanwhileMarnie has been digging around, unearthing all the Raven’s secrets…and all that digging means she caught the eye a man many refer to as De4th. Preston has been waiting for the right time to take his “Little Bird”. He’s been watching her for years, making it clear that no one is to touch her.  Marnie is well aware of his eyes on her, as well as his rules, but it's not something she can st0p pr fight. She may not care about her own safety, but the safety of her twin sister Trina is something she will never put at risk…and Preston is more than happy to use that to his advantage. When Marnie finally graduates and leaves for college, she hopes that will stop Preston’s interest in her…but deep down she knows he was always coming for her.

His bird may have flown off to college, but years of watching Marnie has taught him she has her  own little secrets. And those secrets both intrigue and turn him on even more. When she attempts to go on a date, Preston makes his move. He’s made it clear to her that no man can touch her…and that rule’s just been broken…and he is more than ready to pun!sh her for it. 😈

What follows is a captive romance with a push and pull between them that is perfect.  Even though Marnie tries to fight Preston, she’s up against a man with no soul…and he takes sad1stic delight in giving her the means to fight him, just so she has to acknowledge that she’ll never win…and that maybe she doesn’t even want to.😏

I have been a fan of this series for such a long time. I’ve fallen in love with so many characters and it’s bittersweet to see it come to an end…but oh what an end it was. So many moments that will leave your jaw on the floor.  Love that we not only got an epilogue for Marnie and Preston, but a second that was beyond perfect. It wraps up the series so perfectly that you can’t help but want to laugh and cry at the same time.

Incredible end to an incredible series

Wow, what a disappointment....
For me, it felt like the author was still stuck in Twisted Abel while writing this. The last two books in this series went downhill. Though, I still I liked Harper more than the irritating Marnie.
With the exception of Micha and Silas, all of the guys were just over the top unhinged, and while it was funny & and entertaining sometimesit was mostly annoying. And why was Micha made out to be a little bitch!
Marnie was much better as a side character rather than a main. Her inner monologues were so repetitive and non-stop ramblings. She was too arrogant, sarcastic, and annoying-af. If she was so smart how come she didn't see what Trina was going through or that she was tying up her loose ends.

I also agree with the other reviews regarding Derek's death. It was so unnecessary. Why not just have him get shot and injured while protecting Micha. The immediate death, seemed to just be for shock value.

The whole thing with nash was lack luster. Like she just killed him there was no drama or lead up to it. Same with the guys that put a hit out on all of them.

2 moments I got a kick out of:

Convo between Micha and Preston:
Micha: "Is that blood on your mouth?"
Preston: "So it is."
Micha: "Did you fucking eat her?"
Preston: "No. But I would be coming inside her right now if you hadn't shown up."

Preston:
pg 246 ~ "It's a dick Marnie. Not rocket science. Touch the fucking thing, and it'll get hard."

Chapter 31 was pretty comical with the guys bickering but at the same time too OTT and dumb.

What secret is Lou hiding from Micha?

Nope

I honestly didn’t think I could dislike a book more than Relapse. I was wrong.

Honestly, this book is dark. Really dark. Not the worst but massive trigger warnings for child sexual assault, rape, kidnapping, child abuse, etc. None of those were the issue.

My problem is that I didn’t need 200 pages of Marnie locked in a cage. There was a lot of unresolved things that happened. Not to mention that just like previous books in this there are numerous events that are eluded to but we’re never actually happened in any of the books. And since I just re-read all of them in preparation of reading this book.

And Trina. Oh, Trina. The author just drops this big bomb about Trina, that has nothing to do with her repeated rape, but it just gets dropped completely after one chapter? What?

And the ending. On the surface, the ending fits the overall, OTT nature of the whole Order series. Right up until you realize who is not there. Ava played a reasonable decent role in each story. But she gets left out of the epilogue. And when the author says, if you want to see more of *xyz character,* she’s not on the list.

Over all, less than impressive.

This series is so incredible, and Preston and Marnie's story was the perfect ending. Dark emotions, smut, suspense, and twists, even some laughs, make this utter perfection. To sum up, I just keep thinking that was SO good.

Preston is blown open

I finally know what makes Preston Whitley tick. Maybe....
Marnie does. She's been following him for years. Preston doesn't feel emotions like most. His life is simple and uncomplicated. A well paid man who does jobs with precision and can walk away with no problems. A ghost. The ghost. His knife and Desert Eagle are all he needs. And she's been meddling in his business.
After he decides not to kill her and instead takes her, Preston gives her some time. But no one better touch his little bird. They meet their end if they do. The last single one in a line of thirsty and crazed men, Preston has been waiting for her. Waiting for his little bird to come of age. He's going to clip her wings until she realizes she's just like him. She can think her own crimes are in the name of some misguided justice but he knows everything about her. Even things she doesn't. Her childhood was crushed under parents who believed she was tainted and made her feel unwanted. Only her twin, Trina is close to her but still doesn't know Marnies secrets. When he brings Marnie home he cages her. She will see his reasons. Or she will meet her own end.
As she spends time in Preston's company she sees something that she never did in all time she spent following him. There might be a person who she understands. Nobody sees the Preston she does. And he might be just the right person for someone as broken as her.

This book is everything!! Preston is amazing and Marnie is just the anti villainess waiting for her true wings. His family is crazy and it's hilarious how normal that craziness is to them. Preston is very forceful with his passion. He's not waiting for Marnies acquiescence. He's taking her. In every way possible until she doesn't know who she is without him. He will find something he never understood before. I'm going to read again and again.

She did it, I didn't think it was possible but she did it.... TL Hodel outdid herself!

Seriously, this was just wow! There's no denying we've all been itching for Preston's story, the dude is just this big massive hot conundrum and oh man, he's so much more than I hoped for. Him and Marnie most definitely do NOT have 'normal' relationship, they wouldn't have any sort of relationship if it wasn't for Preston just taking her - and he has no problem whatsoever with taking what he wants, when he wants. I love the banter between the two, they made me laugh - they maybe shouldn't have lol but they did.

My only downfall is that I think the drama was over too quickly, I would've liked more details but maybe that's just me being greedy 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

Now, BE WARNED, this is NOT an easy read, it's twisted and it's full of triggers so if you're easily offended or are unsure if you should read it or not, just don't. You'll just traumatise yourself and then complain and there's nothing worse than reading reviews about how awful a book is, it's romantising abus3 and vio|ence bla bla bla.... Just move on. The end.

However, if you're like me and enjoy the dark side then by all means, sit back and enjoy 😏

My favorite guy by far!

Preston’s book was seriously one I’ve been waiting for since the beginning of this series. I knew I was going to love and hate Preston all at once but I never anticipated how much he would become my favorite. I already anticipate this book being my top read of 2023. I don’t see how anything could top Preston’s ability to grab hold of you and not let go. There were moments I want to throw my kindle and moments where I wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. I don’t know how Hodel manages to do but she has once again blown my expectations out of the water. By far her best book yet in my opinion and I know I’ll be going back again to read Preston’s story again and again. This is just one of those books that stays with you.

Side note, I chose not to include anything specific because I felt like anything I said would give to much away. All I can say is make sure you’ve read the rest of series prior to this one and be prepared to drop your jaw.

Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow

I mean.. wow ...

Way to fuck up a good thing like... but also wow...

Hodel really went there... like we're supposed to root for a man that murders sweet young girls and also literal children off screen??? Why though?

I mean if you're reading this why though?

It's a question for the ages isn't it?

Also, we get an actually interesting female character that deserves to have a badshit crazy man go badshit crazy for her but oh she HAS to enjoy being brutally raped .. NOICE.

Like is nuance too much to ask for?

Like can we GET. a leading lady that DOESN'T get off on being slapped and choked and brutalised? Are there any out there?

Does every single guy have to be devoid of all basic human feeling and Morals?

Does every single girl no matter what her circumstances or intelligence lack any and all sense of self respect?

Did the Greater YA NA Writer Association Cabal get together and decide to compete in the Depravity Olympics?

I would have forgiven everything if I had had a LITTLE grovelling.. a LITTLE ACTUAL CONFLICT... a little unsurity on that assholes part...

And also... the whole order thing... what in the name of useless convolution.. I have to tell you.. I've read 4 of thse books and after the first one I just skipped all.tnose parts coz they made no sense .. had NO GRAVITY .. and didn't impact the plot in the slightest. Nothing is resolved and every imp thing happens off camera ... FUCK YOU why go through all.thst trouble and waste all that space?
Time and space that could have been used to form ab ACTUAL bond between characters beyond anatomy/sanity defying rape marathons

And why did you have to do Micha like that? Why?

Just why ....

I mean a Mensa level girl is basically BEGGING to suck her sociopathic abductor rapists dick because of REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY?

WHY YOU GOTTA DO HER LIKE THAT?

I just .

I mean...

Like I'm angry xoz I didn't hate it.. but I wanted to love it and I would have loved it coz it had all.the elements I love and I really liked Marnie but I just ...

Will start with this book will not be for everyone. Absolutely read the trigger warnings and know what you’re getting into before reading it. This is everything it promises and more. Preston is not a nice guy this is not a redemption story where he apologizes. Tara writes him true to his character and it’s awesome. There is non con, dub con and a lot of questionable scenes so if you don’t like that don’t read it. If you like mortally gray characters continue ☺️

Preston is the oldest in the group he sees himself as the big brother because he is unaffected by the trauma they all faced as children. He feels like he always has to clean up after them but he doesn’t mine. He’s the devil after all. Marnie has trauma and darkness of her own, she just hasn’t fully embraced it yet. Preston sees that and likes that a lot. He decides she’s the one, takes out his contract and pursues her when she’s “of age”.

Marnie has hidden behind this fake persona all her life. She pretends to not be as smart, to wear glasses, no dresses, no tight clothes, all to blend in. She doesn’t want to draw attention to herself. Part of her darkness is her vigilante behavior. She has all these secrets ready to be exposed about the order because she’s been hunting them for years. She also doesn’t like when people get away with things with no repercussions.

This book was so well written honestly it was fascinating to read the way Preston thought about things. He is dark and evil but is actually looking for some thing or someone to ground him. He never knew he wanted that until he saw Logan with Shelby. He found that and more with Marnie. Marnies surrender and acceptance was also written well. It was not easy or convenient. Preston used mind games and made her look within herself to see that she’s like him and they are soulmates.

Super sad this series is over. The extended epilogue was absolutely the best so make sure you go all the way to the end with this one.

I was not ready for Preston and Marnie’s book. I’ve been anticipating Preston’s book, he’s definitely my favorite of the Order. And while I expected him to have secrets I never could have imagined all the secrets Marnie has been keeping. All the plot twists and mind blowing moments were fantastic. Tara has a way of leaving hints of what is to come without leading you any closer to the truth. The jaw dropping moments in this book are unreal and seem limitless.

If you’ve read the other books, you’ll know Preston is a sociopath and quite dangerous and mysterious. My kind of man, tbh. Marnie is determined to learn all about the Order and expose them but in her quest, she catches the attention of Preston and not in a good way. She’s not the only person guilty of being curious and he decides to keep an eye on her. After years of watching, he decides the time has come and makes plans to capture his little bird.

Marnie, being the fighter she is, fights him every step of the way. Marnie thinks she’s sneaky and is doing a great job of hiding who she is but Preston sees the real her and always has. What’s more surprising is that he’s not the only one.

The push and pull between them is fantastic. The secrets and plot twists are amazing. Of course, there is always a little bit of humor especially when Preston’s twin sister, Ava is around. Tara really blew my mind with this book. The ending to this book and the series was absolute perfection, I cried and then laughed and then cried some more realizing it’s over. I love all of these characters and I know this series will forever hold a part of me.

okay a warning to those who want to read this book, if you don't like morally gray DO NOT READ IT this shit is black... now I'm going with the spoilers (and don't complain because this is a series you should already know what came before this book)
-HOLY GOD MY FAVORITE OF THE SERIES I love Marnie and Preston they are BEAUTIFUL AND FUCKED in their own way but they complete each other sooo well
although beware I have a problem with the epilogues/final chapters of this author THEY ARE TOO anticlimactic they are literally resolved in two pages and that builds it so well and hey I understand the point that it is the end and you need to talk about everyone but that epilogue should have been mostly from the main couple (although maybe I'm a little blinded by my dislike with Micha/Mason) he left me a lot of loose ends that I would have liked him to resolve in a general mini epilogue (apart from Preston's book) because although his attempt closing was good I didn't see a peep from Lana/Parker Silas/Star compared to Micha doubts that remained
-the mourning of Silas, what happened with Finn and his family formed, how he became a rocker
-Lana and her babies and her relationship with the bratva, is the child the heir? she agrees?
-Harper and Mason (the truth is Mason still seems like a shitty husband to me) how many fucking children do they have I lost
-Ry and his mourning for his dad do I blame Micha? what happened to his dad's wife and her baby
-Where are the kings
-What happened to Marnie finished college? are you a journalist? What did you do with your research on the crows? how is Preston with his babies and Ava I NEED A STORY ABOUT HER

Disappointing

I was so excited when I found out that Preston’s book would be written. I’ve always found his character interesting since he was introduced a long time ago. Imagine my disappointment while reading this, then finishing it was even worse. From the start this book was bad, and it continually got worse and I honestly didn’t want to finish it. The author took Marnie’s character twisted it into something she shouldn’t have. She changed her into the biggest letdown of any character in all her books. She could’ve done so many things with Marnie and Preston and chose to go this route. Honestly, I doubt I’ll be reading anything else written by this author because of how bad this book was. Then the last chapter or 2 she decided to kill off someone close to Marnie and make it like it was a non issue.
The author also said this is the last of The Ravens and Wolves yet didn’t even answer a lot of questions throughout the series. So many unanswered questions that I’m most confused than when I started this book. It was like she some ridiculous drama together to be able to write this book and it just spiraled from there. The writer really needs to get some new beta readers at this point.

What a ride! I finally found my favourite couple of this series: Preston and Marnie. Perfect soulmates have never been better matched than these two. Marnie's dark, vengeful side was hidden behind a studious facade. She watched everyone and carefully stored facts in her vault of a mind. Using her propensity as a fact-gatherer, she researched the Order for the purpose of digging deeper into their nefarious being. Who knew she was the other half of Preston's soul? Dark, devious, and unfeeling, Preston was a mystery to his family and friends. Only the safety of three people mattered to him: Ava, Parker, and his Little Bird. Otherwise, he didn't care if you lay dying at his feet. When the hunted becomes the hunter, secretly following your other half to keep track of them isn't considered wrong, is it? Two people plotting and carrying out their punishments with precision, all while keeping secrets that could bury their family and friends. The story's dark themes, secrets, and unexpected twists kept me hooked, making every moment more intense. Preston learning he has the capacity to love was the book's high point for me, and Marnie giving in to the darkness within her was utter perfection. These two deserved their hard-fought for HEA.

I know a lot of people were looking forward to Mason’s story but personally, I’ve been waiting for Preston’s since I first started reading the series.

While it wasn’t as dark as I thought it would be (still dark but just not at the Preston level I was expecting), I devoured this book! I sat down and finished it in one sitting.

For anyone who hasn’t read Hodel’s books before, be warned that there is a lot of build up. Marnie spent the majority of the book hating Preston and then it was around the 90% mark (I think so anyways) that she finally admitted to liking him.

S.A in childhood is also a common theme that runs through Hodel’s books as well. If memory serves right, it’s a main plot line in every book but this one had more added on from a different person. Just something to keep in mind.

Overall, I’d rate the book 4/5 stars, I loved it and will definitely read it again but I was expecting more darker scenes.

I have been waiting for Preston's story since reading Aftereffect and I'm glad we finally got it. Throughout the The Order of Ravens and Wolves we all ready knew what type of person Preston was but the way he came out of this book is what is surprising. What was shocking was really getting to know Marnie and all her secrets...she has a dark side. While we didn't get much interaction with all the characters as we did with the other books this book really did focus on Marnie and Preston. There are some surprises in this book which one really shocked me and it might shock you too if you've read all other books. I really did enjoy this book and loved the ending!

FYI - For those who haven't read a book in this series yet, each book can be read as standalone but they all interwind with each other since everyone is connected. To have a better understanding of this world, (while its not required) I would recommend to start with book 1 and read books in order.

Impressions...

A worthy wrap up

The long-awaited, coldly reclusive and disturbed Preston has finally arrived, and I was here for it. Casting his sights on the seemingly demure Marnie, Preston depicted a perfectly obsessed demon, her obsessed bad boy. Marnie came across and was stronger than her modest appearance would lead one to be believe, and there was more to her, more to their story that lent credence to the villain willing to burn down the world for his love. And as unhinged as Preston may have been, no one touched or got away with damaging what he claimed.

Longer read, slower burn, that wanted to delve deep, this was the story within the series I had long awaited. Because who can resist obsessed with a dose of crazy and some dark humor? And in the end, an emotional moving read.

Panic button is the long awaited story for the anti hero Preston and his beloved bird Marnie! Preston has been characterized as ruthlessly violent with a lack of empathy for almost anyone save a few special people. He's full of secrets and darkness which has created this mix of mystery and danger. So when the seemingly demure Marnie catches his attention, Preston goes obsessively all in watching his woman. Marnie hides sides of herself from everyone including her twin. Preston is the only one that truly sees her, even if she doesn't like it. While she spends more of the book hating him than liking him this slow burn was beautifully done and made this couple worth the wait. There were secrets and surprises that kept everything interesting and made this the perfect ending for a memorable series!

Perfect ending to this so much loved universe. I had high hopes for Preston’s book and I was not disappointed.

Preston’s mind games were so funny, especially at the end. I loved every second being in his head even though he is unhinged. At the beginning he gave me chills, namely when he killed so easily and without reason. I always feel so sad for innocent people who get caught in crossfire. But the more I read, the more immersed I became. Easily my favorite book of all in this series.

Everyone is so f***ed up it bordered on satire.

The epilogue was everything. I can read an endless amount of books in this series and it would never be enough. I would readily read next gen if it was available.

I’m so sad it’s over. I will definitely read the rest of the books mentioned in afterwords by these three authors to get crumbs of the characters I fell in love with.

What do you get when you cross a masochist with a psychopath ….. Preston Whitley !!
The slow build up to Preston’s book has been definitely worth it. Throughout the series you meet Preston in varying forms in each book but mostly he is the character standing in the shadows. But in realisation he is the most dangerous player in the game.
There are so many moments of clarification where the backstories align you realise how dangerous Preston really is. Finally he claims or more like kidnaps his “ Little Bird “ Marnie and what a coming together it is, dark and spicy and all things “ not “ so nice.
Triggers abound in this book so make sure to read the warning before diving in. A great completion to the series.

This was so better than i ever anticipated! I admit Preston pushed my limits and i wondered if he had any redeemable feature's at all, lets just say he was not the most likeable guy, so i kind of went in trusting that Tara would deliver and boy was i right...she delivered Preston in all his glory.....I just loved how unapologetically brutal he was and i like that Tara stayed true to his character from the previous books, but also showed us his heart (well just a little bit). Marnie of course was his match in every way and i loved how she pushed his buttons! This really was a gripping read and the perfect ending to an amazing series. The epilogue literally had me in tears......i cant believe its the last one!? The easiest 5 stars ive given this year so far!!

Oh Pressy, I knew you would give me everything I wanted and more!!! Thank you for helping Parker release his beast! Thank you for “dealing with” all the horrible people that deserved everything you did to them. But most of all, thank you for showing us the real Marnie! She and Trina were more broken than any of us realized. This book hurt on so many levels. I sobbed through big chunks of it and laughed through others. Thanks Ava! Also getting to see my Righteous men was an added bonus!!! So many emotions with the ending of this series, it has had it’s claws in me since Micha snuck into Riley’s room and cursed her Minnie Mouse pillow. I can’t wait for the next gen! If we thought these boys were protective of their girls just wait till their sons and daughters start dating!!!!
