A terrifying mix of drugs, fear and pure need forced my hand. I didn’t necessarily want to mind control the Magical Authorities auditing the Charbon Institute’s broken system. But they kept me from my mages and hurt the people they should’ve protected.
Now I have to live with the consequences of my actions.
Operation DUMP has to free me from my magic’s lust-filled need so I can remove my dark stain from the people trapped in my spell before I drag the men I love down with me.
With a new recruiter stirring up trouble in the student body, I must find myself and the confidence to claim my path before the Institute is ripped apart.
Class Studies is a fast burn, reverse harem, dark bully romance with M/M/F and M/F themes. The trilogy is a college-age academy setting, 18+. All three books are written and complete the story. Please be aware there may be triggers, see inside of book for the list.
Currently living in England, Kate Messick is married with three cats and two degrees in classical music. She enjoys everything clarinet, lifting weights, reading, playing games, and traveling.
From a young age, Kate’s dad read all sorts of fantasy books aloud to his daughters. Eventually, she figured out this reading stuff on her own and found her insatiable hunger for dragons and stories only grew with the years.
Living an exciting life, Kate is never afraid to reach for the stars. She founded the Symphonic Anime Orchestra and traveled with her music all over the US. Over the years, Kate has collected a diverse resume working in education, road construction, spinal technician, data mining, security escort, and more. Her life philosophy: Life is short, never be afraid to spice it up.
While Aphrodite and her men work tirelessly to undo the damage her magic has caused at the Institute; more danger is a foot. Something is turning the student body into mindless, emotionless slaves charged with bringing down Aphrodite and her Harem.
With a new addition to her group of men Aphrodite has truly created a powerhouse harem with 5 of the most powerful Mages at the Institute.
With the Institute on lockdown and an evil force controlling the student body; it is up to Aphrodite, Beryl, Saffron, Ashe, Keith and Tawryn to work together and rid the Institute of the bad magic that has infiltrated the student body and bring about the change the Chabon Institute desperately needs by reforming the Institute from a magical prison for wayward Mages to an actual University/Institute that will help mold and cultivate Mages who need help understanding and controlling their magic.

Aphrodite's magic has caused a lot of chaos, and now her and her harem are working to undo the damage. But while they focus on this, something is taking over the students at the institute, and they have one goal: take Aphrodite down.
The final book in the series fails to disappoint! I have loved Aphy's story and watching her grow into her abilities and grow her harem. She built an absolute powerhouse of a harem with the most powerful mages at the institute. Each one has something different to offer, but they all treat her like an absolute queen. And I was excited to see another addition to the harem.
I wish the author would have given more detail into her powers. It feels like we kind of know what's happening, but over three books, I feel like we should know the ins and outs of her powers and not be left with any questions.
I received a free copy of Class Studies from the author in return for an honest review.
Im so sad this is over. I would’ve loved to see a bit more of Derek, but that’s a me thing. He will always be my favourite little 13 year old.
The story concludes and it ended up being a great ending. I would’ve loved to see a bit more of A understanding her powers more before that ending scene but it still worked out. Besides loving my newly adopted brother, Derek, I’ve come to love Tanwyn! He added this extra bit to the story that I would’ve loved sooner! I need some more background on him and his summons. Yordle is something special.
To the end I still don't know how I feel about Saff. I feel like he didn’t get that redemption arc that he truly needed. As for the others, no complaints! I was unsure of Garnet after Self Studies but he grew on me over the series and Ashe and Beryl, they were always my favourites.
It was awesome seeing Aphrodite grow and she definitely continued to do so in Class Studies. She may never truly outgrow her naivety but she is constantly learning. Having spent her whole life not knowing, she’s actually growing and learning rather quickly.
It definitely feels like there is room for more to be created and tacked on as an extended epilogue or spin-off series/standalones for this world as we didn't quite get that conclusion for who A is and I hope to see more as this world was a great experience.
I can’t wait to read more by Kate Messick. She’s created something truly special with this series.
I read all 3 of the books in this series back to back and had the same thing to say about all of them. So, I just wrote the 1 review for the whole series.
On the whole I enjoyed this series. I binged all 3 books in about 4 days. I liked the heroine and all her men. Each managed to have a distinct personality, which isn’t always the case when authors write such a large grouping. (Beryl was my favorite. How could he not be?) And the writing is smooth and easy to read. (Though there are a few editing mishaps and they increase as the series progresses—more in book 2 than 1, and 3 than 2. But nothing too disruptive. I noticed them, but kept right on reading.)
All in all I have more good things to say than bad. But I do have a few complaints, most of which are subtle and therefore not brief to explain. None of them were deal-breakers for me though (or I wouldn’t have read the whole series).
My biggest is how very focused on Aphrodite’s sex the book is. Now, I don’t mean the number of sex scenes or anything like that. I just mean the way she is largely reduced to her sexuality over and over and over again. The thing for me is that this is what has happened to women for so much of history. History has painted us as mindless slaves to our urges (and this has been used to both villainize and victimize us).
Messick definitely falls into this tradition. Both in making Aphrodite almost mindless with lust for a large part of the series and (for me more notable) making every man (both those she wants and far too many others) pant for her. There is a long standing history of sexual abuse, starting in childhood, attempted rapes (plural), threats of sexual violence, groping, leering, more than one attempted kidnapping with rape as one of the intended outcomes, etc. Then there were the other people calling her a slut and such. Just too much of the story revolved around Aphrodite as something to have sex with, rather than Aphrodite a person for my comfort. Not only for any sort of high brow reason, but also just because I got bored of it. I was especially sick of Ram and Alrick by the end. (Though I’ll also acknowledge that overcoming some of this was one of Aphrodite’s points of growth.)
None of this was helped by the way sex scenes were almost exclusively focused on what the men were doing TO Aphrodite. Sometimes what they were telling each-other to do TO Aphrodite. She often didn’t feel like an ACTIVE participant. By the end, when we had all five men involved at once, she might as well have been a blow-up doll for all she seemed involved as anything other than something for the men to move, manipulate, affect, dump into, etc. Unfortunately, I don’t encounter this infrequently. It’s fairly common, actually. And while I noticed it, Messick wasn’t any worse than some of those other author’s who write sex scenes this way.
Similarly, Aphrodite is told over and over again like calls to like, power calls to power. For a lot of the early part of the series there is a definite sense that most of her men love her for what she is not who she is. They have explosive sex and the men ‘fall in love’ but there is no sense of knowing or liking one another. They have sex once and ate hooked. Which, again, reduces Aphrodite to a sexual object, not a person.
And almost all of those rather long paragraphs can be reduced to the book is full of the patriarchal view of sexuality and male gaze of the female sex. That’s my biggest complaint.
My biggest compliment is just how *chef’s kiss* wonderfully Messick shows Aphrodite’s personal growth. The way she learns to recognize and come to terms with all of the ways Damon victimized and controlled her, the ability to hold contradictory and confusing feelings about a victimizer, growing a backbone, and started to stand on her own. Honestly, this is well done over the course of the series.
I also liked the way not all of Aphrodite’s men fell in love with her and were instantly on board for the whole peaceful harem situation. There were personality clashes, cliques, likes and dislikes among them. Some were open to pairings others weren’t, some were open to activities others weren’t, some were open to trying new things others weren’t, some liked each-other more than others. It made for a more interesting group.
I did think that by the end of the 3rd book a lot of the plotting felt same-same. I mean the broader plot of book 2 and 3 were almost exactly the same, even utilizing some of the same bad guys. Then there was a 3 year gap and a happily-ever-after epilogue that felt random. Other than the harem (that’s the term they use in the book) having formed, there was nothing to distinguish the end of book 3 as the end of the series any more than the end of book 2. Messick could have written 6 more books before coming to the same epilogue point. It felt arbitrary.
All in all, however, any other complaints I have are minor (occasional clunky dialogue or clichéd speech pattern for a side character, for example, or the lack of non-cliché, fleshed out female characters outside of Aphrodite) and basically not worth mentioning. I’d certainly read another Messick book…or series
I was in a constant state of not understanding anything. So much was happening at the same time without any explanation. People reacted in a way that made no sense. We never got to see their harem together to understand their dynamics: 1- I never felt the love from Saffron. And let me tell you he had some grovelling to do. 2- Ashe was constantly mad at everyone, like no one is forcing you to stay buddy. 3- Tanwyn was uncomfortable and that made me uncomfortable. 4- The professor was like a creepy uncle and I blame the author. She should have made more effort to develop his character. 5- Yeah no, I loved Beryl.
In some part, the author just dropped the bomb of the fmc’s supposed origins and explained ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MORE. I was ok with her not meeting her parents, it sucked but that’s life. What I was not ok with was being left without knowing HOW special our fmc was.
It felt like she wanted things to happen that either she didn’t know how to write them or she just assumed it was clear. Like, because she KNEW what she wanted to happen in her story she didn’t spend time explaining what the fuck was going on, leaving out important and necessary details. It seems she liked what she imagined but not enough to develop it properly. I feel like it could have been 4 books. I won’t say the ending felt rushed because it WAS rushed (and that’s an understatement). THREE BOOKS… THREE to solve everything in 30 pages.
Book 3 was full of grammar and spelling mistakes as in “you’re” and “your” being used incorrectly, which CANNOT happen to a writer or at least cannot go unnoticed by an editor.
I really wanted to like this series but it was a huge disappointment. Left me with a lot of doubts and the feeling of having wasted my time. I would have given it one star but I’m trying really hard not to be mean and absolutely destroy this series, I could continue listing things I hated about this.
This is the final book in the Charbon Institue and it ended with a cute little HEA. I am not going to lie because I struggled with reading this book (took me 3/4 days to read). I love the concept and of course Dot/Aphy/A's journey. At first, I did not like all the different names she had, but saw it kind of as an endearment at the end since everyone of her guys called her something different. We did get introduced to some new characters and the final member was added to her harem. This story felt like it was completed and that there really wasn't anything left hanging. I think add on's can be done, but not necessary. You get a lot of fun sexy time with and without the group, the burn did not fizzle or burn out here! I am not a fan when a character is "added" in the last book and ends up being the "evil villain" to defeat. I think that more of his story was almost needed because a lot of it did not make sense and got lost in the translation of all the other parts of the book. I do feel like some of that has happened with each book in this series...but one I let go because I enjoyed the different premise so much. I will look out for more of Kates book in the future because this was such a unique series and I cannot wait to see what she comes out with next.
I was so incredibly amped to read the final book in Aphy's story, but also sad that their story is over. This book was one of those, I need to keep reading besides not being able to keep my eyes open types of reading.
I loved watching Aphy grow within the 3 books of this series, she is constantly learning and gaining knowledge. She spent a majority of her life in the dark so being able to learn is a huge part of her growing up also.
Aphy and her Harem all come together, to fight for a change at the instittue, and there were additional plot twists and turns to this crazy story. I really am going to miss everyone, but I don't think this is the end!
The ending felt like a HEA and HFN all wrapped in one. There's the possibilities of an extended epilogue, or a spin off. I really would love to explore the world that Kate Messick designed for us! I can't wait to see what's next!.

What a fantastic final book in this series. If youve been reading this series you dont want to miss this one as there was so much going on between Aphrodite and her men plus another one was added, which I was so happy about. Thing's are getting chaotic at Chabron as people who were friends start changing acting different and all poor Aphy wants is to figure out her magic, but she doesnt realize what she wants isn't what another wants as there's a darkness that has settled over the school leaving an ominous feeling of something is wrong. They dont know what, but it all started with the appearance of a new recruiter. Will Aphy andvthe guy's be able to figure out just what's going on in time? There were some shocking reveals that even shocked me, that I did not see that coming. You'll just have to read it and find out.
Class Studies is the third and last book in the Thorns of Charbon Institute trilogy. If you haven’t read the previous books, you probably should start from the beginning. There’s a lot going on that gets explained earlier on. If you have read the two previous books and are pondering if the third one’s worth it: Hell yeah! If you haven’t read the series yet, go get them books!
You should know this story is dark, deep and spicy in all the right places. There’s magic, love, hate, violence and mindblowing sex. As a grand finale, Group Studies was incredible. I loved the tension between Aphy’s guys, very amusing to read. There are some unexpected surprises in this one, which were very well presented and took the book to the next level.
Really enjoyed the whole series! Definitely worth adding to your TBR!
I couldn’t put this book down, I loved how Aphy and her harem all came together to fight for change at the institute. I loved the plot twists, a couple I had to re-read because a. I was sure I had read it it right and b. I soo needed to sleep. I think these books would be amazing as audiobooks with narrators such as Bridget & Jake Bordeaux. I was bummed when I finished the last page, I was going to miss Aphrodite, Ashe, Saffron, Beryl, Tanwyn and Professor Grant, then I turned the page and saw the words They Will Return in a new Trilogy 😁
Thank you Kate for writing such a great story that kept me glued to the pages (until we’ll after midnight) 💜.

The story is still full of lots of 💦 and wild scenes. What can you really expect when the main character becomes literally overstimulated every time she uses magic?!? 🤔 The only way to release all that built up pleasure is . . . Well, umm an 'O' if you get my meaning. 😮😯😲😳🤯 Denotation of magical proportions.
So in the steamy department, little has changed. I wish the was a little more closure of the backstory. The ending felt a little rushed after so much was dropped that part of me feels cheated. Usually it's the sophomore books that fall short, but I felt like it was this one more than the others.

Class Studies is the amazing conclusion to the Charbon Institute trilogy! I have to say I loved Aphrodite’s journey from being a scared woman who had just broke free from her master and didn’t know how to live in the world on her own, to finally learning some about herself and her magic and accepting that she has five men who love her and want her for her. This was an incredible story that was filled with mystery, danger and power hungry people. I loved the fight scene and how Aphrodite and her men fought together to save the school. Although I am sad this is the end for this trilogy, I can’t wait for the future short stories and more of Aphy and her guys.
Holy wow!!! What an ending to a RH trilogy that always kept you guessing and you never knew what was going to be around the next corner.
Aphrodite has been through so much and it doesn't seem like it's ending anytime soon. Still knowing not much of anything about her magic, how to control it, where she comes from, and how to keep everything in check so she doesn't end up in worse trouble... or dead.
With the help of her guys, will she be able to find out what she needs to and all of them come out safely on the other side?!?!!?
Btw... about died when I read that this won't be the last we see of Aphy and the guys!!!!!!
What an epic conclusion! Book 3 in the Charbon Institute world continues to follow Aphy and her delectable men. Class Studies takes readers on a steamy adventure filled with magical showdowns, questions on morality, new men in the harem, and so much more! Hands-down my favorite male character ended up being Tanwyn!
I was sad to see this series end, but the author seems to be teasing more content from this crew! Thank you to the author for the ARC! I cant wait to read what you write next.
Wow! What an ending. I’ve been thoroughly obsessed with trilogy and totally love this series. There is so much going on in this book I don’t know where to begin. Aphrodite finally gets her harem together with a surprising new addition too. There is drama, secrets, action and steam! So many questions answered and so many news ones to still find out. Fitting ends to this trilogy. I’m glad to hear there is more to come too. Can’t wait for the thorns of life trilogy.

Aphy finally got her HEA! I devoured this as soon as it hit my kindle and read through it so fast, I was sad it was over! In class studies we get to see Aphy grow some more and learn about who she truly is, and even get answers on her background! I loved all the plot twists and seeing how A and her guys handled every problem and saved the day! I do wish we could have seen more on Tanwyn, and more of their lives together after everything but I’m still very happy with the end! I’m definitely hooked on Kate’s writing style and unique stories and can’t wait to read more in the future!
Aphrodite is finally trying to take back the school and relinquishing her powers after the cliffhanger we got in the second boo. Ashe, Beryl, Saff and Prof Garnet are trying to work out how to best help Aphy in finding out what her magic is. Then a new player is added to the harem and I really liked seeing the relationship develop. It was steamy and a lot of group activities. It was the perfect ending and I really liked the battle scene.

Messick has finished her series with a swirl of magic and whole lot of growth for Aphrodite! This conclusion was worth the wait. I enjoyed this series. The characters grew and changed. The plot was solid from first book to the last word! Messick created a unique world of magic and took her characters - particularly Aphrodite - from flat one dimensional meant for one thing only to fully fledged real people who struggled with morality, love, and grief. I cannot wait to see what else Messick publishes!
An epic conclusion to this part of the story with twists and turns that you won’t see coming. Dot and the reader learn and grow so much in this book as she comes to term with who she is and who actually has her back, all while trying to manage a harem of her own when they all have their very different ideas and desires. What an amazing journey to go on with the deep worldbuilding and the complex cast of characters. There’s a re-enactment coming and everyone gets a role to play for this action packed finale. This is definitely not a world to miss out on!
** This is a series so make sure to read Self Studies and Group Studies before reading Class Studies!!** Wonderful closure to this series; got super busy closer to the end, lots of action. Had several steamy scenes packed in too!! My favorite character finally is accepted into her Harem; you will have to read this to find out who it is, but I can tell you it’s about dang time! lol. Loved the storyline and world that Kate has made and truly sad to see it come to an end.
I can’t put into words how much I loved this book. This whole series if I’m honest. I feel that this book was the perfect ending for these characters. Over the course of the trilogy, you get attached to characters and to watch them go through the ups and the downs only to reach the end is bittersweet. This author was able to wrap everything up while keeping true to the characters and I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. A definite 10/5 read, not just this book but the whole trilogy.
Yes! Finally an ending to Aphrodite’s time at the institute! So happy for her and her harem of men, who also graduated. So excited that things worked out In the end for all of them. Though always their is someone who had to reign chaos In the institute but thanks to aphy and her men well things work out for the best lol. There’s plenty of action and steamy scenes in this book. Check your trigger warnings and dig in.
Wow, what an amazing read. I was hooked on this from the moment that I picked it up and started reading. I could not put it down until the last page was read. It moves along at a pace which made for an interesting and relaxing read. The characters are amazing and you cannot help but love them and the story will not disappoint and keep you reading. This is a book that needs to be on your TBR list, you will not be sorry that you did.
This is the third book of this series. Dam this book was mind blowing. From beginning to the end. Aphrodite and her five men found a way to save her from herself and the evil that was hunting her. Though out the whole series Aphrodite is learning that not everything is black and white, but also grey. A long her journey, she fines unlikely allies to help her out. The chemistry between all six of them was out of this world. I definitely recommend this book.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into but really glad I started the book
This series kept me guessing from start to finish. I wasn’t sure where the book was going to go next and honestly not sure who was going to make up her harem at times. The story was amazing and kept me interested, I couldn’t put it down. I’m glad I got to binge read them at once because I would have been mad having to wait on the next book to come out.
This was a wonderful end to this series. There was lots of spice, action, betrayal, and friendships. Aphy continues to learn more about her magic while dealing with more shady things happening at the academy. Old friendships become more. Aphy and her guys will be forced to work on their communication skills. I would love a followup book learning about her parents and have Saff's mom become mom to the whole group!
What a great ending to this trilogy. The love scenes were 🔥 the battle was epic and the HEA ending was fantastic. The struggle between the harem was real and finding a balance was very necessary. The story had meaning "..we all live by our own moral code..good people do bad things and bad people do good things.." This is so true.
This book was a perfect ending to this series. I'm so excited to see that we will get more Aphrodite and her men. This author has turned into a one click author for me that I will read everything she writes instantly. I can't wait to read more from these amazing characters. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
I received a free copy of Class Studies from the author in return for an honest review.
I loved this book. And I couldn’t put this book down, I loved how Aphy and her harem all came together to fight for change at the institute! and im sad Because this journey is ended. it was a lovely series. wonderfull charcaters, easy to read.
