Short but excellent book for any dog lover! Unlike the majority of dog books, this one does NOT have a tear jerk ending. :)

Highly recommend for middle school aged and up.

Spoiler/Not Spoiler: Cosmo does not die, so now you can enjoy his wonderful story.
I, Cosmo is a ‘woof-tastically’ heart-warming story, full of life, heart and humour which will appeal to any dog-lover, adult or child. Telling the story from the perspective of Cosmo, the 13-year old family golden retriever, is genius! The tone is conversational and authentic: I can really imagine that this is exactly how a dog sees himself within a loving family. Cosmo is wise, humorous, devoted and loves ‘doggedly’. I’ll let Cosmo explain the last one himself:
“There is a word I’ve learned in my twelve years: doggedly. It means “with persistence and full effort.” Humans attribute this to a dog’s stubbornness – our refusal to give up chewy sticks, the way we freeze in the doorway when it rains. But really, it’s the way we love, with our whole hearts, no matter the circumstance. I vowed to protect Max – and my family – doggedly, for the rest of my life.
Cosmo has been bought as a puppy by the family, shortly before the birth of their first son Max, who has a heartfelt bond with Cosmo, each being the other’s champion and best friend. One of the aspects which really engaged me in this story was how Cosmo reminisces about his life with his family, recalling many humorous and heart-warming moments. This makes the family break-down in the ‘present’ of the book all the more poignant. Cosmo is told by the children’s Uncle Reggie to: “Protect their hearts.” And he does so, with all his heart.
I fell in love with Cosmo for a two main reasons: his devotion and sensitivity towards his family, and especially to Max, which is wonderfully depicted; and, his sharp, witty observations which permeate the story, lending it many humorous moments.
Humans can learn many lessons from Cosmo’s honesty and wisdom, and from his love of old movies and dancing! Indeed, dancing is pivotal in his attempt to save his family and avoid separation from Max. The courage, perseverance and devotion shown by Cosmo, despite his own afflictions due to age, is genuinely touching.
My favourite quote, which I think will resonate with many is:
“…I do believe that, with the right human by your side, it’s possible to leap fearlessly into the unknown.”
Will Cosmo, with his dancer’s soul, be able to save his family? Will he become a movie star? Will he remain with Max, his best friend? Will he defeat his nemesis the sheepdog? So many questions, so wonderfully answered in this exceptional story, with the most uplifting, hopeful ending.
Thank you to Nosy Crow for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I've always been a sucker for dogs on book covers and this was no exception. Going into this read, I was a bit nervous but could you blame me after "Marley and Me". No. You can't. Nevertheless, this family-filled fluff of a tale was a refreshing break from all the overhyped basic reads I have picked up the last few days. This heartwarming story is about Cosmo, a 13 year old 'older brother' who is dealing with the everyday challenges and struggles of his family day to day lives, arguments, fights, and let's not forget to throw in dance competitions. It was such a sweet and endearing to read from Cosmos POV and to see his perspective on things. Despite the fact that this is ideal for children to middle grade, even adults such as myself can still be immersed in this cute and short read.

I am going to find it incredibly difficult to review this, because it is no exaggeration to say that I now consider it an absolute favourite. It is the story of an elderly golden retriever called Cosmo, and his quest to stop his family falling apart, as well as to learn to dance and eat lots of bacon. The book is from Cosmo`s perspective and it`s such a joy to read; his observations about humans and other animals are hilarious and he`s just one of the loveliest characters I`ve ever read. I couldn`t love him anymore, and it`s high praise when I say that he reminded me so much of Wilbur from Charlotte`s Web and that I loved him even more. I also adored the different members of Cosmo`s family, but especially Max (their bond is indescribably beautiful) and Uncle Reggie. I couldn`t have been rooting for Cosmo and Max in the dance competition more either- I found it such a fun plot to follow and Cosmo`s absolute passion for dance and his determination to do well for Max made me so emotional that I spent most of this in floods of tears. Reading this felt like being wrapped in the comfiest blanket in existence and receiving a cuddle from a golden retriever at the same time, and I highly recommend it. 5/5, but I`d give Cosmo every star in the solar system if it were an option.

Cosmos family is falling apart.
And its up to Cosmo to keep them together.
He knows exactly what to do.
Theres only one problem.

Cosmo is a Golden Retriever.

Heerlijk! Net als The Art of Racing in the Rain!

A beautiful, heartwarming immersion into the life of a golden retriever. It fully embraces the experiences of being a dog, showing their mannerisms so well that I could picture Cosmo completely. Every time he 'told them with his eyes' that he loved them, I got a bit emotional. So so so good, with a lovely story about a dance competition to bring it all together. I would like a Netflix film of this book, please.

The ending of this book had me reading with tears running down my face. I was an emotional mess. And before you think it's because something happens to Cosmo the Golden Retriever, let me say, THE DOG DOES NOT DIE. He may be 14 and arthritic, but he's fine. It's just that I get so emotional about certain things. Okay, I'll be honest. I get emotional about a lot of things. And I mean a lot. This book had plenty of them. Family, caring, togetherness, friendship, loyalty, and lots and lots of love between everyone, brother and sister, parents and kids, nephew and uncle, but most of all, since this relationship is what the book is about, it was the love that Max and Cosmo shared. Oh and there was dancing, lots of dancing, wild, joyful dancing with abandon. I loved that part.

I'm a dog person. I never feel complete without a dog. Every dog has been my best friend, my traveling buddy, my joy, and the one who is always there to sit in my lap and lick my face when times are hard. You couldn't find a more loyal friend that would give you the unconditional love that a dog does. That's why the last page really got to me when Cosmo says,

"I marvel at how much love there is between us. Love, still. It took me fourteen years to figure it out, but here is what I know, more than anything else. We will always be a family. Families grow and evolve-but I will never stop being Max's brother. Dad will never stop being Max's father. We are connected in all ways, big and small. I take great comfort in that.

Perhaps Max senses that I'm slowing down, because he turns back to look at me. There is so much brightness on his face. "You can do it boy."

I follow Max. I pick up the pace. After him-for him-I feel like I could run forever."

Oh boy, now I'm weepy again.

An absolutely gorgeous story. Cosmo is such a loyal, beautiful soul. This book has stuck in my heart and mind and whenever I see a Golden Retriever now I think of Cosmo.

However, be warned - if your kids read this and you don't already have a dog, you will almost certainly be pestered for one!

As the oldest member of the Walker family, Cosmo saw it as his duty to protect them and look out for them. When his boy, Max, began stressing about all his parents fighting and his fear that a divorce would separate them, Cosmo dedicated himself to Max's plan, which was to win a dance competition, and hopefully prove that Cosmo and Max belonged together.

From the very first page, I fell in love with Cosmo. He charmed the pants off of me with his witty observations and obvious love for his family. This was a dog, who had watched over his family for over 13 years, and how could I not adore a dog with that much dedication?

It was quite a treat being in his head, and I must commend Sorosiak for all the things she injected into his stream of consciousness. Those little things, which seemed more dog-like never failed to delight me. His musings about talking cats and talking dogs was hilarious.

But, do you know what really made me smile? Dancing dogs! Yes, friends, Max and Cosmo trained for a dance competition, and I loved hearing about all the tricks and all the dancers Cosmo admired. The way he waxed poetic about Singing in the Rain and Grease tickled me, and I totally went searching YouTube in search of amazing canine dancers.

As sweet and humorous as this book was, it did feature a marriage that was crumbling, and I will admit, there were tears. It was sad to watch a family go through this, but I feel like this could be a meaningful read for someone in the target audience, who is experiencing the same thing.

Overall, I had a lovely time getting to know Cosmo and the Walker family. This was such a wonderful love letter to those pets, who made our lives better, who gave us comfort when we needed it, who loved us unconditionally, and who will always have a place in our hearts.

This is an adorable story told from Cosmo's point of view. I haven't read many books where animals are the narrator, but this one felt fresh and new.

Cosmo is a sweet dog, who is fiercely loyal to his family, but especially to Max. He's an older dog now, but the writing and the way he recalls his days as a younger pup give this a quite a feel good tone.

The writing is simple, as you would expect from writing from the perspective of a dog, but at the same time, Cosmo's understanding of human behavior makes you stop and think. There are complex issues mixed in, like anxiety, shyness, family dynamics and divorce.

I chose to read this right now because of some chaos at work, and it was the perfect choice, because I was really able to escape into this story.

I ,Cosmo is the utterly enchanting story of 13 year old golden retriever Cosmo and his owners, the Walker family ,around whom his whole world revolves . Cosmo is devoted especially to the young children Max and Emmaline ; to protecting them and loving them “ doggedly “. Through the narrative voice of Cosmo himself, the reader learns of the history and memories of the family so far—funny, heart warming tales of Halloween costume shame , food temptation shame and the pure joy of watching his cherished boy and his family dance ,laugh and grow. When harmony seems threatened by parental arguments, Cosmo is willing to try anything to keep his family happy and despite his age and aches and pains, joins Max in a competition to try to unite the family again.
This is a charming joy of a book. The author writes completely believably as the voice of Cosmo and the result is heart warming, hilarious and quirky. If you have ever had a dog ,Cosmo’s thoughts and behaviours make perfect sense from the very first line! The story made me laugh out loud and it made me sob more than once from the power of the emotions Cosmo both feels himself and sees in his family. Through Cosmo’s bond to all the family members we see, reflected in his eyes and his senses , all the pain, confusion and love that they are feeling as the family struggles.
I absolutely adored the book . The love between Max and Cosmo is so genuinely and beautifully expressed and endearing. The dancing dog storyline is a delight to read and the book is testament to the total love and loyalty that lies in the human– canine bond. Uplifting to read!

'Dogs are also superior in the following ways: we acknowledge danger when humans won't- their capacity for denial is much, much greater. We forgive readily and often. And we do not feel one emotion while displaying another; take, for example, the prevalence of humans claiming 'I'm fine', when they are not fine at all.'

'I've learned that intonation has meaning. Simple words turn sour, depending on the way you say them.'

'I understand the stress that comes from not being able to speak when you want to, how your tongue fills your mouth but refuses to move in the roght ways.'

''All I know is I want us to stay together. We have to stay together. You and me.' I whimper from a deep place. Because it never occurred to me, in any universe, that we wouldn't.'

'His fingers wiggle. I recognise the gesture. It says: here I am. Notice me. If there's anything I've learned in my thirteen years, it's that everyone deserves to be seen.'

This will rocket to best-in-class among canine autobiographies; you know it's authentic because as a memoir it's less about about Cosmo's own life and times than it is about his family and what he's had to eat. He's a good dog and tells his story well.

DNF Did not enjoy Sorosiak's depiction of race. I want books to have more diversity but this white writer did not do a good job of describing black and mixed race characters. I'm going to have to go re-read THUG now to remind myself good character description exists.

Shame because I thought this book would be like the next Wonder.

A sweet book about a Golden Retriever and his human family, most specifically, Max the 10 year old boy whom Cosmo is closest with. As much as I'm tempted to say that this is another boy and his dog story, it would be unfair to not consider the importance of the rest of the family. For, you see, this is also a story about a family in the early stages of the parents deciding to divorce and the impact that decision has on Max and Cosmo.

The book is told through the eyes and thoughts of Cosmo, the dog, as he perceives things evolving and the effects it has, especially on his best friend, Max. There are also extended family members and neighborhood dogs who occasionally come to visit or are encountered at various times. Uncle Reggie happens to be one of the most important figures in Max's life. You could say that Uncle Reggie steps in as a bit of a father figure when times are tough. He always seems to know just what Max needs and both Max and Cosmo love him for this.

Interestingly enough, both Max and Cosmo love the movie Grease and eventually work out a dance routine based on the movie for a local talent show involving dogs and their owners. Cosmo is fully dedicated to this pursuit despite his ailing body due to his advanced age. All this goes down as the divorce comes to a head creating a little extra drama along the way.

This book is actually written for children but appealing to adults who just love a good dog story between their more serious reads. Some of the issues are sad but don't get too intense for a more sensitive child. It can serve to help them address some of life's difficulties such as divorce and the impending doom of an aging pet. Don't worry, it never gets too sad but allows one to consider and ask questions to ease into contemplation of these events that may take place in the real life of a child.

My only drawback, considering that this is a child's book, is the choice of using the movie Grease. It works well enough but I'm not convinced that most children would be familiar enough with the movie to understand those parts considering the movie is a few decades old. Then again, it still gets lots of play so maybe I'm just not understanding its popularity amongst the 10 year old set. Regardless, I'm sure they would still get the idea of what is being told though not sure they would understand the full mode of the styles, music and dances. If you are buying this book for a child, it would be even more special if it was paired with the movie for a deeper understanding of certain parts that play some importance within the book.

A dog book that even this dyed-in-the-wool cat person loved? I know, it’s amazing!

I will admit – I checked the last page of this before I started it, because I am very leery of animal death in books. And it’s fine – that is not where this story goes at all! You can read in peace without worrying about that!

What we do get is a funny, heartwarming story from the point of view of Cosmo, a dog who is determined to help his best human friend Max through his parents’ divorce. Cosmo’s voice is so wonderful – a little bit philosophical, and a little bit obsessed with food, and a really different point of view on things than humans. I’m impressed at how readable it was, and how the author sustained that voice across the whole book without it ever becoming too gimmicky. I read this all in one sitting, because Cosmo’s voice was so compelling that I just didn’t want to put it down.

Max and Cosmo enter a doggy dancing competition, with the help of Uncle Reggie, who is an army dog trainer, and one of the least toxic male role models I’ve ever seen in middle grade fiction. He’s open about his emotions, gentle with both Max and Cosmo, and seems genuinely lovely and loving. I was really impressed at how good his relationship with Max and Cosmo was. Max obviously feels uncomfortable talking to his parents about the divorce, so – it was great to see that he had some adult (human) support as well as Cosmo’s well-meaning help.

Viewing the story through Cosmo’s eyes allows for some lovely reflections on family and love, and this is a book that I think will have cross-age group appeal. I’m definitely impressed that it made me connect so much with a dog (I’m really not a fan in real life) – but Cosmo will stick with me for a while, I think. Thematically inappropriate, but four out of five cats!

I, Cosmo by Carlie Sorosiak is, I suspect, rather brilliant. I didn't quite understand it for a while until all of a sudden I did; I got it, I understood, and then I was Emotionally Moved and here we are.

This is the story of a golden retriever and his family. His boy. His bacon. It's odd; undoubtedly, and for some reason the narration reminded me a lot of The Book Thief which is quite the unusual reference for a golden retriever to evoke, but here we are.

I keep returning to that notion of presence. Here we are. Living in the moment, loving in the moment, whispering a secret to a dog that we don't tell anybody else. I, Cosmo's premise is a little unusual and a little bit messy sometimes, and I don't quite know if the ending worked for me, but this isn't really a book about that sort of thing. It's about love and love is something that exists in the now for Cosmo and Max. Sure they have a life of stories between them, but they also have the now. That moment when they'll do anything for each other. And Sorosiak gets that, she writes their love beautifully. It's incredibly rich and deeply eccentric and rather, utterly, lovely at points.

Here we are. A dog, a boy, and a love that carries them both through some dark times. This is a book that covers family problems, the problems of being an elderly dog, and a sheepdog nemesis. It's odd. It's weird. But it's also so delightfully distinct and packed full of fierce, endless, eternal love that I think I am fascinated by it.

I, Cosmo is out in August from Nosy Crow. My thanks to them for a review copy.

Absolutely fantastic! I know this was intended for the middle grade audience, but I adored the story — laughing out loud and tearing up throughout. Cosmo is an older golden retriever and he’s the one who narrates this story. His boy, Max, is struggling with the realization that his mom and dad aren’t getting along and they might eventually split up. So Cosmo feels it’s his responsibility to hold the family together. The story comes at this topic from a unique position, showcasing how divorce impacts everyone (including our beloved pets). I love how expressive Cosmo is and how he reads and interprets common human actions. I’ll admit that I was nervous because Cosmo is getting up there in age, but this story has a happy ending and will soon be a favorite in children’s and middle grade libraries. I also appreciated the note at the very end, encouraging readers to first look at shelters and rescues when they want to adopt a dog. I highly recommend! My thanks to NetGalley, Carlie Sorosiak, and Candlewick Press for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest response.

I have a serious soft spot for stories from the perspective of animals. When they’re done right, they hit me right in the heart. And I, COSMO was done so right. Carlie Sorosiak captured the essence of dogs perfectly–from the love of bacon, farts always being blamed on the pooch, and most importantly…a dogs undying love for his boy. I was almost at tears on multiple occasions throughout this book–it is heartwarming to a tee. The blending of a dogs love for his family alongside themes of separation and divorce was brilliantly handled. I think what really effected me though, about this book, was Cosmo’s similarity to my lovely Stanley. I lost Stan last Summer, and I miss him terribly. It was so lovely to be able to capture his essence again, albeit in a fictional way. AREN’T BOOKS THE BEST?
