Oh how I enjoyed this book! I find historical novels fascinating anyway, but in this one I really warmed to the characters and was with them all the way. A beautiful, wise, entertaining read that was very hard to put down!

Antes de nada, aclarar que esta no es una novela romántica, ni hay tan siquiera subtramas romántica. Tracy Rees fue publicada por primera vez en España con Libros de Seda con el título 'Amy Snow', esta es la segunda historia que se traduce al español.
La historia se sitúa en Londres siglo XIX (1895) y tendremos tres protagonistas que contarán su historia, aunque más adelante aparecerá de manera fugaz una cuarta. Las principales son: Mabs, Olive y Otty. Creo que el mayor peso lo lleva Mabs o por lo menos a mí me ha dado esa sensación, su trama es la que más me ha enganchado. Aunque a medida que el puzle va cuadrando y acaba siendo casi un mismo argumento, la novela se lee en nada porque buscas llegar al quid de tanto misterio.
Mabs es una muchacha que proviene de un entorno humilde, a su corta edad pesa sobre sus hombros una gran carga: debe hacerse responsable de todos sus hermanos, que son unos cuantos. Ella asume el rol, como hermana mayor, de ser la cabeza de familia. Desde el fallecimiento de su madre, su progenitor no levanta cabeza y es más un lastre que una ayuda. Los únicos ingresos que entran en el reducido hogar son los que genera Mabs arriesgando su vida en el hielo. Un buen día los astros se alinean y consigue una oportunidad única: trabajar para una familia adinerada con un sueldo decente, aunque no suficiente para todas las bocas que tiene que alimentar.
Lo que no espera Mabs es entrar en un entorno lleno de misterio, rencor y mentiras. El matrimonio para el que trabaja no se soporta, la señora no le pone las cosas fáciles a la pobre sirvienta, mientras que él le da todo tipo de facilidades y de vez en cuando hace de intermediario.
La primera reacción de Mabs respecto a sus señores es no interferir en su relación ni ahondar en sus desgracias, intenta hacer su tarea de la mejor manera como compañía de la señora, buscando pasar desapercibida. Pero los oscuros secretos de la familia acabarán tragando a la joven.
Por otro lado, tenemos la historia de Olive una mujer avanzada para su época: inteligente, estudiosa, autónoma y con ideas propias. Quiere ser madre a toda costa pero no está casada y tampoco busca marido, decide luchar por su sueño por sí misma, y sin obviar el gran apoyo que recibe de sus padres. Olive tendrá un papel clave y esa personalidad resolutiva y vencedora acabará por contagiar a otras mujeres y preocupar a muchos hombres.
Otty es la trama de una niña que poco a poco va forjando su propio pensamiento y camino. Inspirada por su vecina, quiere ir a la universidad y formarse, pero también busca tener amistades reales sin importar dónde viven, de dónde procedan o el color de su piel. Es una muchacha llana y muy madura para su edad, ser la pequeña entre tantos hermanos no es tarea fácil, y ella buscará apoyo en sus nuevas amistades para pedir consejo. Está muy unida a sus padres, en especial a su madre.
Cómo se unen las tres tramas no lo puedo decir, aunque ya se sabe casi al inicio de la historia. Conoceremos el día a día de las tres protagonistas y poco a poco la autora irá ahondando en el secreto que esconde la familia Finch, yo he ido haciendo mis elucubraciones pero me pasé de malpensada.
Me ha gustado mucho el estilo de Tracy Rees, seguro que esta no será mi última historia y ya estoy deseando hincarle el diente a «Amy Snow». Reitero que no encontraréis nada de romance en «El jardín de rosas»; prima el desarrollo de las protagonistas, todas desde perspectivas y mundos muy distintos, junto con el misterio que envuelve toda la historia dentro de un contexto histórico. Me ha durado menos de un día, así que solo puedo recomendarlo. La traducción y edición de diez. Si os gustan las novelas del estilo de Julian Followes, esta historia es la vuestra.

Haar vroegere buurmeisje Ottilie Finch geniet van haar nieuwe leven in Londen. Het enige waar ze zich druk om maakt is haar moeder. Zij lijdt namelijk aan een mysterieuze ziekte. Ondertussen komt Mabs, een nieuw dienstmeisje, bij hen werken. Mabs is heel erg blij met deze baan. Het redt haar namelijk van een heel ruig leven op de werf.
Door een gevaarlijke ontdekking over Otillies moeder worden Olive, Ottilie en Mabs onverwachte bondgenoten, en raken ze verstrikt in de geheimen die de familie Finch naar Londen hebben gejaagd. Vanaf nu zullen ze samen moeten werken om zichzelf en hun geliefden te beschermen...
Ik wilde eens een roman lezen, in plaats van een thriller en mijn oog was meteen gevallen op 'De rozentuin'. Wat een prachtige cover heeft dit boek! Toen ik de flaptekst las werd ik nog nieuwsgieriger, want wat is nou precies de gevaarlijke ontdekking over Otillies moeder?
'De rozentuin' neemt je mee naar het jaar 1895. We maken onder andere kennis met Mabs, Olive, Otillie en haar moeder. Mabs leidt een heel zwaar en armoedig leven dus als ze bij het gezin Finch mag komen werken is ze dolblij. Maar niets is wat het lijkt...
Olive staat voor een dappere keuze waarmee niet iedereen het eens is. Ze besluit toch haar gevoel na te gaan. Ook leren we Otillie beter kennen en lezen we over de band met haar moeder. Uiteindelijk staan deze vier vrouwen allemaal met elkaar in verbinding.
Het verhaal is ontzettend mooi opgebouwd. Je leeft mee met Mabs en haar familie, maar ook met Olive en Otillie. Er komen schrijnende onderwerpen voorbij en je krijgt met alle personages een band. De verschillende vrouwen zijn goed op papier uitgewerkt en je proeft de sfeer van 1895. Naarmate het verhaal vordert worden bepaalde dingen steeds duidelijker.
Ik wil niet te veel verraden maar 'De rozentuin' is een meeslepend verhaal.
Vertrouwen, liefde en familie staan in dit verhaal centraal.

Rich, thought-provoking, and moving!
The Rose Garden is a compelling, character-driven story that sweeps you away to Hamstead, London, during 1895 and into the lives of several women from different backgrounds, Olive, Mabs, and Ottie, as they meet, interact, and form unlikely friendships that transcend social status and, ultimately, changes their lives forever.
The prose is vivid and smooth. The characters are multilayered, brave, and authentic. And the plot is a compelling tale of familial responsibilities, strength, duty, coming-of-age, friendship, love, danger, survival, and the roles of women in Victorian England.
Overall, The Rose Garden is a touching, fascinating, uplifting tale by Rees that I thoroughly enjoyed with its strong female characters, intriguing storyline, and insightful look into the complex, powerful bonds of friendship.

Wonderful!! It's not often you find a book full of characters that could each have their own book that you'd happily read, but they're all here!! Under one banner and it was just so lovely to be part of their world for the duration of this story. The author really does do historical fiction so well, and captures the essence of the times whilst including such strong, fascinating characters!
Set in London, around 1895, we're introduced to very different characters living very different lives. Olive has a life many people would dream of, and she's fully aware of the privilege she has. But she's not one of those obsessed with indulgences and endless partying, she wants to do good and becomes determined to adopt a young girl from the local orphanage - definitely not the done thing if you're a young, single woman!
Then there's Ottilie, who is 12, and has recently moved to the area from Durham with her family. And she's excited to be living in London and just wants to explore and learn! Another determined young lady!
And then there is Mabs, who has a tough home life after losing her mother, helping her father provide for her 6 siblings. When she's offered the chance to work for the Finch family as a companion to the poorly Mrs Finch she jumps at the chance and is determined to do her best. She is soon part of the family and so grateful for the opportunities she has been granted.
What follows is their stories and how they come into contact with one another. It's a fascinating story of independent women of the time and how that was frowned upon, and they were expected to tow the line and do as they were told. It was heartbreaking at times to see the lengths some people would go to to keep them in their place, so to speak, but their spirit never waivered and seemed to be inspired by what they saw around them.

Bella lettura ambientata a Londra, alle porte del Novecento.
L’autrice, Tracy Rees, una scrittrice contemporanea che non conoscevo, ci introduce in un ambiente ben ricostruito storicamente e con uno stile elegante e raffinato, quasi classico.
Si parla di donne inglesi dell’epoca, appartenenti a vari classi sociali, ma accomunate dal desiderio di emancipazione che le porta talvolta a scontrasi con la mentalità dominante.
Quando l’istruzione ed il potere erano esclusivamente in mani maschili ed ogni accesso era sbarrato alle donne.
Ho trovato la storia, narrata dai vari personaggi femminili in modo quasi corale, scorrevole e coinvolgente, con un finale che grazie alla forza delle protagoniste riesce a non lasciarti con l’amaro in bocca.

Wat een prachtig verhaal !, ik heb er absoluut van genoten. Was echt overal bij en had zelfs soms de neiging om te gaan slaan! Dan doe je het goed als schrijfster. Dit is het 1e boek dat ik van deze schrijfster lees, maar daar komt zeker verandering in. Aanrader!

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for approving me for an ARC of this book. Many years ago, before I started blogging, I read another of Tracy Rees’ books and really enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this one. I buddy read this one with some of my book club friends and we absolutely loved it!
The story is told from the POV of four incredible young women; Olive, Mabs, Abigail and Otty. The youngest of the four is Otty. At twelve years old Otty is just starting to understand the world. She idolises her father and wants nothing more than to please him but she has a craving to learn and explore the world. Otty was absolutely adorable and whilst she was naïve to the way of the world I had a lot of admiration for her bravery and determination.
Abigail, also known as Mrs Finch, was a character you weren’t sure you could trust. Her treatment of Mabs at the start was appalling but I had a feeling very early on that something wasn’t right with her. As Abigail’s narration is introduced I could understand her resentment and her unnatural behaviours.
Olive was an old soul in a young body. I often had to correct myself as I kept visualising her a lot older than her actual age. Her relationship with Clover was beautiful and her general outlook on the world was very wise. What she did for Mabs was unbelievable and made me love her even more. She didn’t suffer fools easily and was not afraid to step out of the social norms. I also thought her parents were brilliant. Whilst they had their reservations at the start they still supported her and helped her to achieve her goals.
Of all the four women my favourite was Mabs. At such a young age she carried a lot on her shoulders. Her determination to provide for her brother’s and sister’s never waivered. She was selfless where her family were concerned and professional at all times. She didn’t want charity but was willing to accept the advice of Olive and Abigail.
Whilst all four women had their obstacles to overcome they each showed fierce determination and will to succeed. Together they were a force to be reckoned with! This was a beautifully written story of friendship, loyalty and not being afraid to follow your own path.

An excellent read.
Historical fiction isn’t my usual go-to genre, but after reading this superb novel by Tracy Rees, I’ll definitely dip my toes a little further in.
With Rees’ beautifully detailed narrative I was hooked from the start; I almost feel like I’ve been back to Victorian England and met Mabs, Olive, and the others in person. The book features a strong cast of female characters whose lives are all intertwined one way or another. I was completely invested in their story and really cared about what was happening to them. I rooted for every single one of them until the very end.
A book showing the strength of women; of female relationships, of friendship and love. The Rose Garden was a bloomin’ delight to read.

¡Increíblemente maravilloso! Un libro que he disfrutado de principio a fin, que me ha llegado al corazón y que he sentido que ha sido escrito para mí, además en este preciso momento en el que lo necesitaba.
Los personajes me han parecido muy reales, y por lo tanto he vivido sus situaciones con mucha intensidad, tanto las alegres como los momentos duros.
Además, la autora posee una pluma ligera, cercana y bonita de leer (también gracias a la traducción en Español, que me ha parecido de 10, mi enhorabuena).
Desde el primer momento ya me sentía enganchada a este libro y no he podido soltarlo en ningún momento. No se me ha hecho aburrido, sino todo lo contrario, lo he devorado con ganas. Aunque me ha dado pena terminarlo porque solo quería leer más y más.
La ambientación en la época Victoriana en Inglaterra está muy bien lograda al igual que las tramas, que se van hilando cada vez más y más, descubriendo misterios. En este libro no encontraréis una historia de amor entre hombre y mujer. No habrá romances muy profundos pero sí habrá un amor más grande que todo ello: el de la familia y la amistad. El de una madre por sus hijos, el de una amiga por otra... La autora le confiere a sus personajes femeninos una importancia digna de admirar, sobre todo para esa época tan dura.
Me ha encantado todo: tanto el duro trabajo de una de sus protagonistas para al final llegar a ser algo más en la vida, como por la adopción, por querer ayudar a los más necesitados, por ofrecer ayuda a quien lo necesite, etc. Y sobre todo hace hincapié a las relaciones tóxicas, que en esa época, el marido podía aprovecharse de abusar incluso mentalmente de una mujer, y el daño que puede llegar a hacer.
Una historia conmovedora que sin duda se ha convertido en una de mis preferidas.

Los personajes me han parecido muy reales, y por lo tanto he vivido sus situaciones con mucha intensidad, tanto las alegres como los momentos duros.
Además, la autora posee una pluma ligera, cercana y bonita de leer (también gracias a la traducción en Español, que me ha parecido de 10, mi enhorabuena).
Desde el primer momento ya me sentía enganchada a este libro y no he podido soltarlo en ningún momento. No se me ha hecho aburrido, sino todo lo contrario, lo he devorado con ganas. Aunque me ha dado pena terminarlo porque solo quería leer más y más.
La ambientación en la época Victoriana en Inglaterra está muy bien lograda al igual que las tramas, que se van hilando cada vez más y más, descubriendo misterios. From the first page of this book I was engrossed. Tracy Rees is able to describe a scene or character in enough words to make you feel that you are there, without being over the top. Her use of descriptive tools really brings the story to life in your imagination. Set in 1895, Rees really captivates the life of that time, the difference between classes and cultures as well as the individuals themselves. I could imagine every scene in my mind from the depths of despair in the slums to the beauty of the heath and the richness of the homes described. Every character has a purpose and I feel as if I know them, rooting for them at times, despairing and despising of one and tears of happiness by the end. I have felt as though I was in another world for the last 24 hours as I have been fascinated throughout. I have been a great fan of Tracy Rees' work for some time especially as she is a local author. I cannot recommend this book any more highly. It is one of the best books I've read this year so far.

It’s 1895 in London and 18 year old Mabs is working as a labourer at the canals disguised as a boy to support her father and siblings. Mabs is offered a role in service to the Finch family who have recently moved to London. Mabs’ role it to be a companion to Mrs Finch who is described as delicate and finds life difficult, but no further information is given. As Mabs starts her new role she quickly learns that there is more to the Finch family than meets the eye and when secrets start to be revealed including the reason why she was hired, what will Mabs do with the truth?
Mabs also becomes a companion to Mrs Finch’s youngest daughter Otty and is tasked to show her around London as she loves to explore. Otty is a free spirit who is adventurous and wants to learn more about her surroundings. It’s through Otty that Mabs is introduced to 28 year old Olive. Olive is a spinster from privileged background who adopts a 4 year old orphan, naming her Clover. Olive is from a very forward thinking family and wants to use her position to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The story is told from the point of view of Mabs, Olive and Otty. Part way through the book the narrative of Abigail (Mrs Finch, Otty’s mother) is included which adds further context to the story but also important background information on her life and her relationship with her family. I really enjoyed this book and the storyline. The intrigue behind the Finch family and their secrets kept me guessing from the outset. I loved Mabs, Olive and Otty as characters all of whom are the main characters but also strong female leads. Mabs is hardworking and determined. Olive is always thinking outside of the box and is focused on living a philanthropic life. As for Otty, she is very smart for a 12 year old and sees people for what they are even if they are different to her in both class and colour. This book paints a very real picture of life in Victorian England showing the extremes between the way people lived. Mabs’ life captures the extreme poverty faced by many during that time and Olive and Otty’s lives depict extreme wealth and privilege. It’s a stark contrast and there is no in between. It was fascinating to see the characters all of whom were from different backgrounds and social circles interact and become close.

He leído El jardín de rosas en colaboración con la editorial Libros de seda. Antes que nada, quiero agradecerles el envío del ejemplar y el buen trato que siempre muestran hacia mi persona y mi blog.
Los libros se disfrutan en mayor o menor medida. Son para muchos de nosotros, parte imprescindible de nuestro día a día.
A veces, las menos, se convierten en toda una experiencia de lectura, como ha sido el caso de El jardín de rosas.
Lo primero que me llamó la atención durante su lectura, es la capacidad de la autora, para en pocas pinceladas, llevarte exactamente justo adonde quiere. En este caso al Londres de los suburbios de la época post-Dickens. Allí conoceremos a la joven Mabs, hermana e hija mayor de una desfavorecida familia sin apenas recursos ni posibilidades.
Pronto su vida dará un vuelco, cuando sea contratada como acompañante de la Sra.Finch, cuya familia acaba de llegar a Londres, huyendo de un escándalo. La joven Otty Finch, nueva en la ciudad, será otro personaje que iniciará un camino de descubrimiento en el nuevo entorno que la rodea y en su propia familia.
El libro está narrado en una sola línea temporal y en diversas voces. El nuevo trabajo de Mabs le planteará muchos desafíos especialmente con Abigail Finch, a la que rodean unas extrañas circunstancias familiares en las que ella misma se irá viendo involucrada. Un incidente casual la hará conocer también a Olive Westallen una mujer muy rica, soltera y aun joven, aunque no tanto para los estándares de la época, un tanto excéntrica y con una personalidad arrolladora.
Es difícil destacar en unos párrafos todas las sensaciones positivas de lectura que absorbes cuando disfrutas de un libro como este. Voy a intentarlo:
- La ambientación en general y la descripción del precario día a día de la clase obrera.
- La inquietud de tener un propósito en la vida y mejorar la de los demás. Hacer de la filantropía una manera de vivir y hacerlo desde el respeto hacia el prójimo.
- La voluntad de proporcionar a las hijas una un legado de educación y libertades, en contraposición a los matrimonios impuestos y el veto a la formación superior y/o universitaria, reservada a los hombres.
- La cadena de sororidad entre mujeres de distintas edades y clases sociales.
- La evolución de los personajes, (casi todas mujeres).
- El concepto de familia más allá de los lazos de sangre.
- El guiño final a la injustificada envidia entre mujeres, en algunas ocasiones.
- El ensalzamiento de la amistad por encima del amor.

En la primera parte del libro, las protagonistas van conociéndose y tomando decisiones que las llevan a interaccionar y hacerse cómplices entre ellas.
En la segunda parte el misterio alrededor del matrimonio Finch coge mucho más peso en la historia. Todo converge en el mismo lugar. Mabs se encuentra en una situación de lealtades divididas y Olive y su familia se erigen como la fuerza motriz de superación de cada una de las circunstancias de sus amigas. Acompañandolas, animándolas a conseguir su independencia y sobre todo dando esperanza a las personas que más lo necesitan, dentro de este círculo de apoyo pero también fuera de él.
CONCLUSIÓN:
El jardín de rosas es un homenaje a las acciones de la buena gente, además de un relato lleno de empoderamiento femenino. En un mundo con grandes desigualdades ayer y hoy, no puedes terminar el libro sin una sonrisa, mientras piensas en todas las oportunidades que están ahí fuera si eres capaz de ir a buscarlas.
Recomiendo su lectura por todo lo comentado en esta reseña. La edición, es además muy bonita y estoy segura de que la traducción ha supuesto todo un reto por el dialecto y el acento de la clase obrera londinense de la época. La mayoría de expresiones encajan y se leen de manera natural, por lo que deduzco que este ha sido un buen trabajo también.

Il s'agit du premier roman que je lis de Tracy Rees et je peux de suite vous dire que ce roman m'a beaucoup plu.
On se retrouve dans le Londres de la fin du 19è siècle, on rencontre Mabs une jeune femme issue d'une famille très pauvre qui a perdue sa mère quelques mois en arrière et qui pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille travail sur les canaux londoniens en se faisant passer pour un garçon.
C'est grâce à sa meilleure amie Lou, qu'elle va postuler à un emploi de Dame de Compagnie dans une famille qui vient juste de s'installer dans la ville. Elle va faire la rencontre d'Otty, une des filles de la famille, Olive une voisine fortunée dont la famille intéresse beaucoup le père d'Otty qui ne manque pas d'ambition et Abigail la mère de famille dont elle doit tenir compagnie et qui semble souffrir d'une étrange maladie.
Le roman choral nous est raconté par l'ensemble de ces femmes qui vont toutes avoir un lien. J'ai beaucoup aimé le personnage d'Olive, une jeune femme libre, qui assume ses idées et qui est soutenue par sa famille, fait plutôt rare pour l'époque. C'est un roman qui traite de la sororité et de sa puissance. Ce sont des femmes fortes et qui veulent se sortir de la torpeur de ce que la société de l'époque voudrait leur imposer.
J'ai beaucoup aimé le style de la romancière, c'est très fluide à lire et cela m'a fait penser à la plume de Lucinda Riley. J'apprécie de plus en plus les romans historiques.

Tämä vei aivan mennessään ja hiljalleen jokainen kertojaääni onnistui voittamaan minut puolelleen. Teos kertoo kauniisti naisten välisestä solidaarisuudesta ja ystävyydestä, nostaa esille naisten asemaa menneisyydessä ja asettaa vastakkain äänet köyhälistöstä ja yläluokasta. En tiedä kuinka paikkansapitävä tämä on historiallisessa valossa tai jotenkin minulle jäi ehkä hieman yltiöoptimistinen kuva siitä, että solidaarisuus olisi ylittänyt luokkarajat, mutta toisaalta ne ennakkoluulottomat ja vapaamieliset ihmiset ovat historian saatossa olleet muutosten liikkeelle panijoita ja mahdollistajia, joten varmasti mm. Oliven kaltaisia ihmisiä on ollutkin menneisyydessä.
Vaikka tarina pomppi eri kertojien välillä, pysyi kokonaisuus hyvin kasassa. Erittäin viihdyttävä tarina, joka kiihtyy loppua kohden. Ahmin viimeisen kolmanneksen kirjasta yhdeltä istumalta ja rakastin loppua. Miten kaunis lopetus tälle tarinalle. Se sai onnen kyyneleet nousemaan silmiini. Ihanaa myös ettei tähän oltu nostettu romantiikkaa keskiöön, vaikka tarina olikin hyvin ihmissuhdevetoinen. Pidin tästä ihan valtavasti. Ihana lukea pitkästä aikaa jotain näin vangitsevaa.

: Discover the locations in the novel
Tracy Rees really does write some great historical fiction and gripping stories about women from the past. This one is no different as we follow three women of different ages, and from different sides of the track and what a picture it is! This novel paints a full and detailed picture of Victorian London from a woman's point of view. You really get a insight into the lives of women in this era, their roles, attitudes and responsibilities. Mabs is young and has to support her family by working at the docks. She has to dress like a boy to do it though as girls working, especially in this kind of place, is not the thing to do. Olive shocks everyone by announcing she wants to adopt a child. The shock comes as she is unmarried at 29. Then there's Ottilie Finch, who is only 12 but wonders why her family had to flee Durham and move to London. The three characters stories combine and create a fascinating picture of the life of women during that time, of the differences between the classes and how male dominance and control of women was at that time. Sad to think that some of these restrictions and attitudes still exist. That makes me sad. What makes me smile however is that there are women like Mabs, Live and Ottilie all over the world who continue to make a difference and support each other.

Really liked how 4 different women from different class backgrounds, all wanted different things than what was considered normal in the Nineteenth Century. Also how they helped each other and others and became not only close friends but in a way Family. Would definitely recommend this book.

Historical fiction books are one genre that I really do enjoy reading , especially when the author has clearly done their work on the era (this one is set in 1895 London) .Twelve year old Ottilie Finch is definitely a character that I love she is one that I can picture in my mind vividly while reading this book.
The scandal and secrets that flow through the book kept me hooked and kept my interest peaked . The writing style of the author is one that opens up your mind , it makes it think constantly what could the secret be , who is going to be effected by it. This will definitely not be the last book I read from this author!

Told from these three contrasting perspectives, the story is compelling in its exposition of a patriarchal society, divided by class, wealth and gender. And in this, Rees’s research is both impeccable and illuminating.
Yet still, Olive, Mabs and Otillie come together, striking up a firm and affectionate friendship. A friendship of equals which transcends all differences and ultimately leads to them joining forces in a matter of life and death against a male threat.
I love that this book is not just an absorbing, often thrilling, story but also a social and political commentary; a feminist tract, if you will, but softened by its wholly engaging protagonists: three bold, ambitious, norm-busting women.
I warmed to all of them. To gracious, kind-hearted Olive, resigned to spinsterhood but with a burning desire to use her wealth and influence for the greater good. To spirited, determined Mabs, pulling herself up by her boot strings to secure a better life for her motherless siblings. And to knowledge-hungry Ottilie, whose youthful innocence bristles at the inequalities she sees around her.
I was swept into their world and loved every moment I spent with them. A hugely enjoyable, deliciously satisfying, joy of a book.

I warmed to all of them. To gracious, kind-hearted Olive, resigned to spinsterhood but with a burning desire to use her wealth and influence for the greater good. To spirited, determined Mabs, pulling herself up by her boot strings to secure a better life for her motherless siblings. And to knowledge-hungry Ottilie, whose youthful innocence bristles at the inequalities she sees around her.
I was swept into their world and loved every moment I spent with them. A hugely enjoyable, deliciously satisfying, joy of a book.
