A Companion Book To Fallocaust #5

Garden of Spiders 2 House of Flies Volume 1 Part 1

Rate this book
It's 187 A.F, six years after Sanguine's unexpected arrival, and Elish is mentally preparing himself to ask King Silas to marry him. However, it can be difficult to even get time with Silas considering the damn Beast Island Games are starting soon. Skyfall's first reality show competition that pits convict Skyfaller against convict greywaster is the brainchild of the king and is currently taking Skyfall by storm. Every family member is invested, all except Elish who thinks this 'foolish game' is a mistake that will cost the Crown hundreds of thousands – whereas Silas is confident it's going to make money.
A mistake, a complete mistake, but for some reason a certain player has Elish unable to stop watching the competition, unable to stop obsessing over him. Elish doesn’t know why, but he’s not about to let his compulsions control his life… again.

And while Elish struggles with his worst enemy - his self control - Sanguine is fighting his own battle. It has been a year since Valentine died and Sanguine's resentment against Silas is strong. But how could it not be? Silas condemned Valen to death knowing how much Sanguine had loved that boy. After everything Silas put him through, the king still let Valen die.
However, Silas isn't the only one suffering under Sanguine's hurt, Jack too has been worn down by his boyfriend's grief. It was hard enough when Sanguine temporarily left him to be with Valen, but even after the pink-eyed chimera died, it's clear Valen still has a deep hold on Sanguine.

But all of this hurt is soon going to get pushed to the back of Sanguine's mind, because a chance find on Beast Island is about to open a can of worms. Silas is up to something, and with the king distracted trying to stop Elish from ruining those very games, Sanguine intends to find out what it is.

Perhaps Sanguine can finally pay Silas back for all the pain he's caused.

✦ literally the most insane and fucked up series eveeeer. i love every second of this madness.
✦ i missed reading about these characters a lot. i hate like half of the chimeras with a passion, but still, their whole insane family dynamic is just unparalleled. so psychotic and deranged, every single one of them.

"and for a moment, i will admit, i thought he was going to exterminate us. kill the mortal and encase the immortal, start from scratch like he used to threaten to do. we’d disappointed him for the last time, and it was only Sanguine’s love for Jack that had saved our little Grim.
i loved Silas. i trusted him.
but the nature of this beast had me accepting that this was a distinct possible reality. how could i love and trust someone i fully knew could encase us all in concrete without a second look? i... i don’t know. i didn’t know."

✦ i swear, Quil Carter never disappoints. the way i can inhale thousands of pages written by this man like it's nothing says a lot about the addictiveness and the quality of his writing.
✦ can't wait to read the next book asap!

This review contains MAJOR SPOILERS so if you haven’t read ALL books, please do not proceed!

>>>>SPOILERS<<<<

The book opens with the most beautiful prologue EVER. We learn (somehow) what has happened after the end of AGAI and what the remaining chimeras/ immortals/ nightcrawlers are doing. Years have passed, although the author doesn’t say how many, but to my understanding, there has been a significant time since Reaver and Silas started burning, or since Jade-the Ravers’ King and Sasha-the Worm King were lost to the others, and Elish and the rest have been trying since then to find ways to get them back and un-wormed. Also, are there 2 teams now? Again, to my understanding, Sanguine and some others live apart (?) from Elish/ Killian and the others? (Q1: why?)
[In all these years, I hope my baby (Killian 💛 in case you were wondering who my baby is ), has banged all the rest of the team 😀. STOP PINING AFTER REAVER, he doesn’t deserve you! 😩]

This was such a beautiful surprise. I never thought we’d have a glimpse of “current events”. Needless to say, I LOVED IT!

*
The story goes back to when Elish was happy being with Silas and was thinking about asking him to marry. Now, I’ve never hidden my hatred toward Silas. To me, he was the BIG BAD and I feared reading this book, because I didn’t want to see Elish being in love with HIM!
They were lovey-dovey in this book, but it wasn’t as I thought. Sometimes I really think it was genuine (and i really liked it), and sometimes I think it wasn’t (Elish thinking about f*cking a certain greywaster when he was with Silas). Was it Love what Elish was feeling for Silas? Or was it Trauma from his childhood and all what happened to him in GoS 1? I still believe that Elish decided just like that, that he was in love with Silas and he convinced himself to love him. It remains to be seen.

*
Nicky.
I liked Nicky, the new sengil of Elish. Such a strange boy! Elish doesn’t say who Nicky was cloned from. Was his behaviour (and very strange questions he asked) a “glitch in the matrix” (meaning error in his coding made by Elish), or is there something else? (Q2)

*
Manti’s Lab
I think Elish being in Mantis lab was the most important part and chapters of the book. Mantis lying to Elish about Valen! Why was Valen made immortal and was he Alive when he was made? (Q3) Silas never wanted him to. Why did he change his mind? Was it because he felt sorry for Sanguine and wanted him to be happy, or did he want to experiment on him and empath chimeras? Mantis presenting Elish with a new “base clone code” was the most intriguing thing ever! I think Mantis had met a nightcrawler and that was the nightcrawler’s coding. Who was the nightcrawler Mantis had met? Did he really meet him or did he get the code from somewhere else? Was the nightcrawler at the lab at the same time as Valen? Was the nightcrawler there when Elish visited? What experiments was Mantis doing on both Valen and the stranger nightcrawler? What did they want to achieve and was that coding used for Jade? (Q4-8)

*
The Twins.
I loved that we saw so much of the 2 set of twins, Ares/ Siris and Apollo/Artemis. They made everything so funny!

*
Jack & Sangy 💔
I always disliked Sanguine for breaking Jack’s heart and leaving him for Valen. He was struggling during this time. I can see Sanguine and Jack are both broken and maybe they aren’t the best choice for each other. I don’t resent Sangy anymore. You can’t help whom you love, and like he said:

-“Face it, we never had anything to be done with,” “We started dating because we were both lonely and broken, and we stayed together because we assumed being demon stealths, it was our destiny.”
-“You were lonely and broken, Sami,” Jack said. “I just made the mistake of trying to pick up your sharpened pieces.”
-“Save that line for your poetry book.”
- “Spare me, Sami, the world knows you’re much worse than I–”

Maybe Crow IS the better choice for Jack after all. Sangy and Jack being introverts and Too similar doesn’t help. CROW! Why do I like him so much and why do I get excited whenever he “shows up”? 🖤 I love that he has his own corporeal body now and that he can be there for Jack-“in current times”.

*

Hux.
I like how “enamoured” Elish is with him and how he resents himself for falling for a filthy greywaster. Did Silas and Garret throw Jade in Moros because of this fact? To annoy Elish and to remind him of the time when he was after Hux? To “fall”(again) for another filthy slumrat? Interesting! Can’t wait for part 2 to know more about him and his relationship with Elish.

*

The GAMES!
I understand why Silas did what he did, but where was he spending the money on? (And blaming his chimeras about it)
Experiments with Valen and nightcrawlers and/ or Sky? Silas kept things hidden from Elish. And Elish knows this fact.

*
The ending.
One of the funniest ones. Spoiled chimeras must work to earn their own living.

*
Overall
I loved this book and I can’t wait for Part 2. Everyone felt so real in this book. Closer to humans and humanity. I want to see Elish-Sanguine relationship but Hux too. Maybe Elish has a type after all…(greywasters and Morosians: Julian, Hux, Jade..)
Also, seeing Elish preferring coffee to tea in this book was hilarious 😂

Nice idea for a story, it’s fun to see some of the main characters being more casual, in the main series we are used to seeing characters such as Ellis and Kessler “suited and booted” but with this book we were able to see them in a different light.

I can tell the author put a lot of hard work into making it as long as possible but in the end, the book was too long and I skimmed a lot of it (easily skimmed 200-300 pages) and didn’t lose the concept of the what was happening, also a bit repetitive, which is a shame as it lost its page turning thrill appeal that the majority of Carter’s other books had.

Unlike the first Elish books these seemed to be set over a few days, where as I felt the last books covered more time periods, I personally prefer the idea of seeing a larger time scale that shows more character growth (for Elish and other characters.) When I saw the size of the book I did think - we will be covering perhaps a decade of his life in each of the books (much like we did in GOS), perhaps we will see more in part two? It’s a shame because Gos were probably my favourite books of the whole series due to the amount of content they contained, plus also the bigger glimpse we were given in others lives

The ending leads into an exciting cliffhanger which leaves me excited for the next book. Hopefully this will be more of what I’m looking

Simply stunning!

This book is so dang good. If you follow the series the prologue will rock your socks off. The rest of the story is such a lovely look into some of our favorite characters. It’s perfect in every single way.

Why? Why do I keep reading this books? This one was it for me though, I'm done! If you spend 17 hours reading something realizing that the only interesting things did happen in the prolog there is no coming back from this. It was so excruciating boring it took me forever to get through. I really do not care about Elish, he's my least favorite chimera. I only read this series to maybe get a glimpse at to what is happening in Skyfall with Reaver burning and Jade proxied. But since it doesn't look like we will be getting an answer to that anytime soon I am done here.

Another masterpiece

We have being patiently waiting for this book and it was well worth the wait. Once again I was enthralled from start to finish. I missed all the great characters, so was great to have them back. Quil takes us on a journey with him and I can't wait for the next one. Well done and thank you.

I wasn't expecting the main setting of the book to be inside a post apocalyptic reality TV show...

Going from complete and utter emotional devastation of the previous book, to the Dekker ridiculousness of this one, was jarring.

But it's not like I'm going to stop reading. On to part 2

I'm not sure why this one is told from the perspective of Elish and sanguine but I'm happy anyways. I love Elish.

Phew. Stepping back into the world after 2 years took some getting used to. But it also just felt right. The beginning took me by surprise and I was left a little more emotional than I expected. Overall, this was good and after the second half I’m sure there’s a lot more to uncover. Definitely more going on here with Silas. The last chapter is where we finally got a little more of the Silas we’ve grown to expect. Looking forward to more for sure as I love these characters. ❤️

Elish's story continues

What a wild ride I just went on! The prologue is a continuation of the events of the previous book.
Chapter one takes place as Elish is reading his past journals.
The Beast Island games were were scary and gruesome. Quil thinks up the best monsters to give me nigjtmares!
As we learn, the family hasn't changed much. I still love Drake, Elish is still cold, the Twins cracked me up, Kessler is still a jerk, Sanguine still breaks my heart, and Silas went through all of his moods, proving he's still the mental shape shifter.
I enjoyed reading about the family while in a different time if their lives, before the worms, and before the infighting.

A brilliant series

This series is beyond great, it’s brilliant. I’m in a world like no other whenever I read a novel penned by Quil Carter. The ending left a lot to my imaginings and already pining for the next book.

I must say, I liked the first two books of Elish better. Far better.
This companionbook felt like it was dragging along more, more mundane moments and not with a clear enemy as much which made it feel like the story had less of a direction.
I also liked Elish less in these, though I guess thats a part of it for Elish wouldn't like himself much now during this time either I guess. But for all his long lived life, why tell this story to Jade when Jade needs him most? We haven't even heard of Hux before this book and though I guess I can see where Sanguines storyline will lead, I don't see how this part of Elish's past is relevant for Jade to hear.
Also, is it just me or do the amount of smut scenes increase with each book? Not that I'm complaining as much, but I do wish to see my favorite pairings together and that those scenes contribute to the story.
I just really hope Jade and Elish and Killian and Reaver can work things out between them!

Love the series, but tbh this didn't hold much interest for me.
Prologue was awesome since we got to see what's going on atm but after that was Elish's book in progress i guess.
I don't really care much about Elish's past obsessions. I missed the characters so i enjoyed the book but i wanted to read about the others not just Elish.
Give me a book about Nero for example and i'll eat it up.
Loved that we got more of Sangy though!

I took a break from this series for awhile because 1) the books are LONG and 2) these characters and the world they live in are so effed up that it literally was draining me. The characters are so complex and at times I despise them and at times I love them. The only character I hate with a passion 100% of the time is Silas. Glad to be diving back in.

I will never understand why they think Elish is as bad or anywhere as bad as Silas. He's a f**king angel compared to him.

Silas and Elish are actually kinda cute. I ship it.
Mirroring that, Jack deserves better.

The prologue was much appreciated.

The rest is Elish's villian origin story.

Anyway, I actually enjoyed Elish is this book he actually laughed and was genuinely happy being with Silas in some moments. Was he in love? I'm not sure, but you can tell he loved him at least in the same way he loves his other brothers I'm curious what eventually fucked it all up.
