When my magic manifested at puberty, my parents sold me to the Illuminati. The Order of the Illuminati trained me as an assassin, spy, and thief. But when they sent me to steal a magical artifact that reveals Truth in all things, I discovered that I was working for the Dark and not the Light. The Illuminati trained me well, and paid the ultimate price for their deception.Thousands of miles away, I landed a job in a quirky little bar. But the scattered remnants of the Order still strive for world domination, and no one leaves the Illuminati alive.
The omnibus collection of all the books in the series. An epic tale of survival and redemption.
I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.
As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff.
Read these as they came out, and I added this collection because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Erin’s year is a busy one, filled with a lot of adventure for a young lass just trying to make a fresh start. From the moment she arrives in Westport, she finds herself embroiled in a succession war, a plot to bring her nightmares back, an ancient evil that wants to use her for his own ends, and even a fanatical attempt at ruling the world.
The stakes get bigger as this one little girl tries to just earn enough for a shot of expensive whisky and find a place to call home.
BRK should revisit Erin one day, because Erin still has some kids to teach, a bar to tend, and buildings to design.
This collected edition is a good romp, quick paced, well written without getting caught up in itself, and exposition flows really naturally as Erin finds herself bouncing between the things she is scary good at, and the feeling of not knowing what to do after having had a young woman’s life denied her.
Warning: it is hard to find good pauses, and even after three readings, I still find her adventures worthwhile.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
4.5*
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Shadow Hunter: 2.5 stars. The prologue almost had me quit the book. It was so…hard to get through. Chapter 1 was a bit better but I still needed a break before I tried again. Fortunately, chapter 2 and the rest of the book improved enough in pace and action to keep me reading. Night Stalker: 3 stars. Lots of action. A new threat to Erin. I’m glad I have the next book all ready to read. Dark Dancer: 3 stars. Many things happen. The felt a bit anticlimactic but I did enjoy that scene. Well of Magic: 2.5 stars. This one just kind of ends. And at a point that leaves a lot unresolved. I’m glad I have the five books in one because that kind of ending really irks me. If it had wrapped up a bit better I would have gone with three stars. Knights Magica: 3 stars. Lots of action going on. I’m kinda curious about what happens next but I felt the ending wrapped things up well enough to satisfy.
Overall, 3 stars for the set. I’m glad I stuck it out.
2022 bk 340 (actually books 340-345) as there are five books in this collection, and I read them all. Erin isn't a name that fits with an assassin so in those days she went by the Scorpion. Now she's 'retired' at the ripe age of 23 and happy to settle for a job as evening bartender at Rosie O'Grady's a bar that caters to those of a paranormal bent - you know, witches, mages, seers, some shapeshifters, vampires, and dhamphrs. But leaving the world she knew isn't as easy as she thought as her military skills are pulled into play repeatedly through the first five novels of this series.
I have read these 5 books thru K. U. more than once, and now can afford them. They are a fantastic read, they transport you to Rosie's and you believe all the characters are as real as you are. The places come to life in an amazing way and you get really invested in their story. Now that they are mine to keep I look forward to re-reading them even more.
I’ve absolutely loved this series! It’s different to any other paranormal/urban fantasy that I’ve read before. A strong lead character whose training should’ve made her hard and uncaring, but whose strengths are balanced with vulnerability and an ability to inspire love and loyalty. A fight against evil, with the evil not always being in the most obvious places.
I went through the torture of waiting for each of these books to come out back when it was first written. But now I've come back and read it all at once, and wow. It's really a excellent take of redemption, following your heart, and love in all its forms. With plenty of action, sass, romance, and supernatural creatures of every sort. Highly recommend!
I plowed through the series in three days, I couldn’t put it down! This is the story of a young woman, sold into servitude and trained to be a spy/assassin. Her life is turned on its head when she’s given a book by the daughter of her target. From then on, she tries to find a new life and forego all that she had left behind. Fate has a bigger plan for her. Read this series. It is enthralling and worth it.
The heroine is great! Her character development is interesting in the first 3-4 books. Supporting characters are also fun. The romance is there, sometimes painful, but lovely for the most part. The action movie elements (chases, fights, etc.) of the story gradually overwhelm the character development and themes, so the last book isn’t as good. Writing and editing are fine, no clunkers.
It weren’t over. It’s a really well done series that brings you into the world and makes you want to stay. I would read additional stories about Erin and this world. Well written and well copy edited for the most part, which I really appreciate as a long time Kindle Unlimited reader.
I got this series as a “boxed” set on Kindle Unlimited, but it’s so good, I’m going to go buy them as individual ebooks because they’re THAT good. If you’re hesitant, don’t be. Grab this now.
I loved this series of books. Erin is a wonderful Heroine and the rest of the characters are awesome. I didn’t want the story to end. Highly recommend this series!!!in
Creative, enticing, and very well written. I very much enjoyed this series. The storyline and interweaving of mythos with modern times was superb. Depth of characters was engaging especially the growth of Erin. Loved it.
I really enjoyed these books. Some details were sort of glossed over 'it is magic'. But great characters. I read a lot..at least 4 or 5 books a week. And these were well worth the time.
This series has a fascinating world of its own. Plenty of interesting characters including humans, magicals, Fae, vampires and shifters. Great battles and friends.
Lots of exciting action and powerful characters that constantly delight! Thanks for making this fantastic world and adventure! Can’t wait to read more.
Loved the story, but felt like I needed a little more at the end
Definitely worth the read. The entire story is great. I deducted 1 star for the ending because I felt like I needed more. But other people may not feel that way, and I still highly recommend this book.
Really enjoyed this series. Very good read, and it’s one I will read again. As an individual that lived 39 years in MN and have now lived in Oregon for the last 11 years, I could imagine myself in Erin’s place if magic was real. 😉
I luvd this amazing journey. Everything you could want or hope for in a story that creates the blend of ancient legends with newly lived ones. Try it, you’ll like it 😉
Just finished the 5 book series and was impressed by the writing. I thoroughly recommend this author to anyone who enjoys this genre. Had to get to the end.
I have read and re-read this series so many times. I loved the bar and how they had each others back. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal books.
