4 stars. A lot more emotional and heavy than I was expecting. What a great surprise. Veda kidnaps Briar as ransom. They were both already attracted to each other before then as Veda works for Briar’s father.
I thought this was a really good story. The writing was good and kept me absolutely hooked, and I loved Veda and Briar a lot. Veda has a quiet strength to her whereas Briar is spirited. She’s such a firecracker and I loved their chemistry and watching them try to fight their attraction for one another. I got way more out of this than what I thought and I’m glad that I picked this up. It’s book four in the series but it definitely can be read as a standalone. I plan on reading the rest of the books in this series because this was so good. Perfect balance of drama, angst, smut, and romance. Loved it.
Alexa Woods has such a storytelling mind. The “Arranged To Love” series is such a Age Gap Romance compilation that exceeds all others. This one was no different. A loyal bodyguard uses her military background to help her current employer take down a young girl predator and business cheat among other things. In exchange he would give her a set amount of funds. But that never happened and knowing he was deceitful with her, she hatches a plan to kidnap his older daughter. Even though Veda was in charge of all his daughters and other things, her hand was being forced to do something. Briar, the oldest had a crush on their bodyguard but with that she realized that Veda was taking her somewhere that was not the mall. Suddenly, she realized maybe the person she trusted was not who she expected. This was such a carefully crafted story which of course leads to a perfectly HEA. Excited for the next book in series.
⭐4.3 I loved this book, even when the story and the title of the book don't really corelate. I went into this book thinking there was going to be a forced marriage plan with the other lead being a captive. But I was wrong. And even then, I loved the book. I liked how Briar already is attracted to Veda and it wasn't Stockholm syndrome, which I dislike. The situation with Briar's father not paying Veda for the job was a bit meh. It could've been something interesting, but I understand that the story was meant to be lighthearted, fun, and sexy. Overall, great read.
Wow fantastic storyline I loved the main characters their chemistry was shining through the tough times and blossomed into a beautiful love story congratulations
I am continuing to thoroughly enjoy reading Alexa's books. This one is no different, I never wanted to put the book down. It's a shame I have to sleep and work. A great plot as always, strong believable characters. Worth reading without a doubt.
Captive wife in cabin in the middle of nowhere. There a place between hostage and lust. The attractions were there and then a strap of leather and love is emerged.
Speaking of trigger warnings. This book needs them and they should be listed in the description.
I typically like Alexa Woods’ writing but this one was an absolute mess of non-consent and deeply problematic power dynamics which would have been plenty disturbing on its own even if the two characters had been super gentle with each other but their interactions are abuse under the guise of BDSM which just adds insult to injury. Pretty sure the BDSM community has had more than enough misrepresentation (50 Shades anyone?) and this book misses the whole point, which is consent.
To make matters worse the book literally starts with a pedophile and child rapist along with descriptions of him brutally raping a child. In an age gap romance story of all things. Sure, he’s the bad guy but I can scarcely think of a more inappropriate thing to write as an introduction to a romance story about an older person and an incredibly sheltered, barely 20 year old womxn.
I truly cannot understand why the author chose to include that other than perhaps as an attempt in anchoring bias so that by contrast the following interactions don’t look quite so appalling. Let’s be honest though, if you have to compare your main character to an unrepentant, violent, child raping predator in order to make them look good that’s a whole box of red flags.
As far as the structure goes it was weird. We get almost no time to discover the characters before the very real kidnapping takes place and there’s nothing cute about it. Any chemistry the characters supposedly have is delivered almost entirely through exposition, as if the idea of them actually liking each other was retconned into the story after the fact.
The reasons behind the kidnapping are ludicrous. We’re supposed to believe the main character, who is all stoic and professional, resorts to kidnapping her employer’s daughter without even having a proper conversation with him about why he hasn’t paid her for her work. In fact, the main character doesn’t have one single interaction with any member of her captive’s family throughout the entire book which kind of highlights how isolated and creepy it is.
So many absurd things happen for no realistic reason besides the plot demands it and everything is hastily wrapped up at the end with even more exposition and a queasy feeling about how incredibly inappropriate the whole thing was.
