Can be read as a standalone book or as part of the Inconvenient Brides series of Regency romance books.
Nina started writing her own stories in elementary school but quickly grew distracted when she finished school and moved on to non-profit work with recovering drug addicts. There she worked with people from every walk of life from privileged neighborhoods to the shanty towns of urban and rural South Africa.
One day she met a real-life romantic hero. She instantly married her fellow bibliophile and moved to the USA where she enjoyed a career as a sales coaching executive at an Inc 500 company. She lives with her husband on the Florida Gulf Coast.
Nina believes in kindness and the indomitable power of the human spirit. She is fascinated by the amazing, funny people she has met across the world who dared to change their lives. She likes to tell mischievous tales of life-changing decisions and character transformations while drinking excellent coffee and avoiding cookies.
I enjoyed this, it was a pretty easy read. I haven’t read the other books in the series but it can be read as a stand alone. I thought Sophia acted with a lot of understanding and common sense. Events that I would’ve blown up about, she shrugged off with an explanation and moved forward (like an illegitimate child). Of course the MMC was an idiot but he was trying hard to do the right thing. It was a nice love story with a few steamy scenes. Those scenes weren’t overly detailed and I felt they could’ve used a bit more sexual tension. But they were quite pleasant. I will read the other books in this series.
Lord Richard Balfour, the fourth Earl of Saunton, has a long history of amorous conquests and a major act of disloyalty to his former bride.
Although at the beginning of the previous book, the character's actions are more than questionable, as the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that there are other layers and the possibility of redemption.
I waited anxiously for this story to find out what would be the catalyzing event in his quest to mature, to be a better person and repair past mistakes and this one comes in the person of Miss Sophia Hayward, who does not disappoint. She is not only beautiful but smart, unpredictable and understanding.
I loved! I read the book virtually non-stop and look forward to the next in the series.

Sophia and Richard’s story was funny and touching. The characters in this series finish their emotional journey using forgiveness rather than retribution. It is a unique twist and an endearing theme used by this author. Cannot forget great sexy times with richard can’t keep his britches on balfour haha
3.75 stars rounded up to 4. This is my first time reading a book by this author, and although this is part of a series, it's fine as a standalone. Sophia is a young woman who is set to inherit a large dowry, and so is cautious about attracting men who only want her money. Richard is a reformed rake who wants to make amends to those he has hurt, and he is attracted to Sophia's honest, spirited nature. Their marriage is not exactly one of convenience, but they are thrown together very quickly. They must find their way to trust each other and overcome the obstacles of Richard's past and an unknown enemy who threatens them in order to reach their HEA.
Sophia and Richard are both quite likable. Although I had my misgivings about Richard in the opening chapter, his character undergoes a huge change early on and it's easy to see how his father had such a negative influence on his life. Sophia is unusually unflappable as Regency heroines go and her down-to-earth, logical reactions (except toward the very end) are refreshing. I also appreciate that the aunt and uncle who took her in when she was younger are genuinely caring people who want the best for her and aren't just flat, scheming stereotypes forcing her to marry. What stood out to me most, though, were the scenes with the MC's and sweet Ethan, which are heartfelt and moving.
The author's writing style is smooth and no errors or anachronisms jumped out at me. Language seemed true to the period.
On the nitpicky side, I felt that the mystery aspect was predictable, the plot relying on misunderstandings and lack of communication that became a bit frustrating. The pacing could also be erratic. It was hard to believe that someone like Richard would change so suddenly just due to overhearing a conversation between Sophia and her friend, but he's committed. Then there's a lull in the plot. The action picks up abruptly right before Richard and Sophia's marriage and at that point, one thing after another occurs, in too much of a convoluted fashion. The quiet scenes with Ethan and other family members and friends, and scenes that just focus on the main characters' chemistry, are a welcome respite.
Overall, though, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
Steam level: just about a 3. The scenes are spicy but not overly graphic.
I read an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary review. My opinions are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher, and Booksprout for this opportunity.
Absolutely loved this! My favorite of the series. It’s about a Rake who is trying to find a wife and must change. He has his work cut out for him. Can be read as a stand-alone.
What I liked: • The Rake and the heroine • The chemistry and romance • The ending • Steamy scenes I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a good historical romance. Thanks Booksirens

What an unexpected romance between friends that become more. The story is a fairly quick read/listen and is very addictive. The story follows Sophia and Richard. After watching her brother and father she has grown cynical; rightfully so. All she wants to do is avoid marriage because she has other plans. Well what happens when a scandalous earl sets his sights on her? Richard meets this fiery women and wants something different. Richard and Sophia come together again passion ignites. Such a good story with an interesting, steamy, fun and sweet plot.
Oh my! What a story! Sophia is a strong amazingly creative woman who puts off the ton in a humourous manner. Richard is a rake of the first order. Together they face hurdle after hurdle trying to reach their hea. Their is humor, mystery, twists, turns, steam and more in this story. Nina Jarrett is a masterpiece author who keeps you engaged and inthralled from the first word to the very last word. Excellent in every way! 10 stars.

A good second book in the series, it follows on well from the first book, it progresses nicely, there is a little bit of angst and suspense but I handled that without too much discomfort. Hints of a lead into book 3 throughout the novel. I suggest that the preludes are read first then the series read in order.
Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this book; this is my freely given opinion.
I have read the preceding full novel and novellas of this series, and while this could likely be enjoyed as a standalone, and the novellas do not contribute to the story of Richard and Sophia, book 1, The Duke Wins a Bride, does set up background to Richard's behaviours and relationships, which are an essential part to his character, developing self awareness, and desire for redemption in this book.
Also, I really enjoyed book 1; the story of Annabel and Philip, the Duke of Halmesbury.
Richard Balfour is a wealthy, handsome, charming entitled Earl who thought nothing of slutting his way through Society for carnal pleasure; the only boundaries he held himself to was to stay away from brothels and innocents, sticking only to willing women, such as unhappy wives and merry widows, with some housemaids and the like tossed in for fun. After all, he watched his father die from the pox from his indiscriminate affairs and use of whores. Balfour also lost his mother when he was quite young as well, and saw her misery in her marriage.
He had thought to contract a typical Ton marriage by wedding his friend, Annabel, and leaving her in the country, while he resumed his philandering lifestyle, but she would have none of that after catching him in the stables tupping a servant. Because of his treatment of her, Annabel had run to his cousin, Halmesbury for help, and they ended up forming a love match - all detailed in Book 1. Book 1 contained a lot of relationship details about Richard, Annabel, and Halmesbury, and it peaked my interest in Richard, who seemed the villain of the piece, but not a straight forward villain, but a man who had issues with relationships, but seeking connection. I also wondered how he could consider Annabel and her brother his good friends, but then treat her as horribly as he did. This book answered many questions from book one and sated my curiosity and questions about Richard.
Richard, resentful that he lost his intended bride, and had to put work into replacing her, gave up his mistress and his affairs before the start of the new Season and sets about hunting on the Marriage Market. He is not thrilled by what he finds, because not only does he want a bride whom he can ultimately leave in the country to raise his children, while he hops in the beds of other willing women, he wants one who will be comely, and be able to not bore him to death with her conversation.
He dances with Sophia Haywood, and while he is attracted to her beauty, he is bored silly by her empty headed prattle. But as he seeks air out on the terrace, he overhears two women speaking and one of them , while quite cynical and damning of the Ton and men in general, is also witty and bright, and he knows that is a woman he could have interesting conversations with. Then he overhears a damning condemnation of his character and behaviour. One which is devastating to Richard as it opens his eyes to his own character. Then he is further shocked when he finds out who the speaker is - the supposedly insipid, empty headed Sophia.
Sophia, an orphaned debutante and heiress, is in her fourth Season, sponsored by her protective and loving aunt and uncle who are hoping to secure her future traditionally, through marriage. But because of her observations of her own parents unhappy marriage, she is determined to thwart their well intentioned efforts, until she can gain her majority and control her own monies, to live independently. Thus, she has employed strategies to deflect the attentions of suitors, including pretending and hiding her true character. She has no intention of being controlled by a man who could bring her misery and mean her harm. Her half brother already has been bullying and abusive in order to force her to give him money to fund his gambling and drinking.
Richard, on reviewing his past and realizing that he has potentially harmed many women in his past, lays out a course of action to find those who were vulnerable and could have suffered from his behaviour, such as the maid Annabel caught him with, whom he knows was dismissed from her position. Something else he had never considered, considering he usually took precautions, learning from his father's ways, was the possibility of siring a bastard. He seeks to aid those who could such as through monetary compensations, and heartfelt apologies.
In the meantime, he seeks to obtain Sophia's good will and hope to court her. She initially rebuffs him, but then her hand is forced when she overhears nefarious plans made by her brother and another to kidnap her to steal her dowry, and she realizes that in order to secure her safety, she needs to control who she will marry, and if Richard is honest and true about his changes to his lifestyle, he may be the best choice for her.
This starts their path together, building a marriage as they are confronted with the past, and the challenges that occur in the present because of it, including threats to their growing trust, relationship, and family.
Richard's realization of his own character flaws and his past, and his desire for change and redemption seem quite the about face at first, but if you read from book 1, it may not seem as sudden as it initially appears. I think he regretted his actions towards Annabel, and how it affected his relationship with a childhood friend(s) and perhaps also other relationships, but was too proud to admit or acknowledge it fully. So I was thrilled to see that come through in this book. Who doesn't like a redeemed rake after all, especially one who truly is redeemed? Also, Sophia is a refreshing character with a brightness, warmth, depth, and intelligence I really enjoyed. I really enjoyed Nina Jarrett's character development and writing style. There was lightness and humour, as well as bit of drama.
Sophia did not seem to me to be a watering pot type of character though, and I wondered, as there were several periods where she broke down in tears towards the latter half of the book - was that a hint of the emotional roller coaster that comes from certain biophysical changes, or just being overwhelmed by all the turmoil she and Richard faced?
Regardless, I loved reading about Richard's growing understanding of himself and his past, and his works to better himself, do right by those he had wronged in his past, and be a loving family man for Sophia. Sophia will hopefully hold him accountable while giving him a loving family.... and maybe allowing the occasional brandy would be OK - personally, I would not trust the water in 1800s England anyways. Cholera is nobody's idea of fun times.
4.75 stars out of 5
Not a perfect 5 because I did not feel full justice was meted out over one of the villains of the piece.
Richard Balfour…Earl of Saunton, looking for a wife, unimpressed with the selection of marriageable ladies. Sophia Hayward…pretends to be a flibbertigibbet, has successfully avoided marriage for three seasons, desires to be an independent spinster. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It contained a mystery, a lesson in humanity, and love. The h was strong and straight-forward. The H was not perfect in his behavior and he acknowledged this and took action to fix his flaws. I chuckled when the h played the empty-headed girls to remain unnoticed and then got caught being her true self. I liked the flow of this story, the H and h interactions were different from the ones I have been encountering in my recently books read. Yes, there is steamy steam.
He's spent years screwing anything he could, but then overhears a girl talking about him and suddenly he's reformed? Sorry, you don't go from treating women like property to poof suddenly a fine man. The novel was also stiff. The language was stiff, they seemed to have no chemistry together, and In general it was boring reading about them chatting back and forth.
Sorry I gave up after 11%. Too many books to read to waste time on a book I’m not enjoying. Straight away I loathed the leading man. And seriously he’s been a wastrel all of his life and after hearing one person disparaging him he does a 180 and is suddenly a new man. Just wasn’t feeling the book so gave up.
Marvelous! Yes, I thought that after reading The Duke Wins a Bride, it made me a true Nina Jarrett fan but I am convinced now after reading To Redeem an Earl that I am a devoted follower of hers. Her books are undoubtedly at the top of the best regency romance books written. She delivers appropriate English dialogue, characters so realistic that they leap from the pages, grammatically correct in all aspects, steamy love scenes that leave you breathless but yet are filled with romance and most remarkable is that her books have a true life-changing, life-redeeming theme behind the storyline. In this awe-inspiring book, our despicable rake, Richard Balfour, Earl of Saunton, from the first book in the series, The Duke Wins a Bride, is again in search of a wife after losing Annabelle to his cousin Philip Duke of Halmesbury. He dances with Miss Sophia Hayward and is at first not impressed with her silliness although she is rather desirable but he is not aware that her silliness is an act to keep potential suitors away because she does not wish to marry. Already, Nina Jarrett is pulling us in with these subtle tricks. We have a rake being tricked and will soon come face to face with his own debauchery and a young lady not desiring to marry playing tricks but she will soon need this very rake to protect her. You are going to absolutely love Sophia and if you hated Richard in the first book, get ready to change that opinion because he’s going to show us what it means to truly make amends for the past mistakes in our lives. You do not need to have read book one in the series to understand and enjoy this one but it’s my opinion that by having done so, I can fully comprehend the total transformation Richard is going through. Trust me though, you want to read both for the pure enjoyment of them.

Another great story from the hand and heart of Nina Jarrett. How I enjoyed book 2 of Inconvenient Brides. It can be read as a stand alone but also has references to the story in book 1.
This story focuses on Richard who is confronted with his debauched behavior towards women and the way he abuses his status as Earl. The words spoken by a woman; Sophia Hayward. He realizes that he wants to be better than his father and not follow his example by cheating and lying to women, including his mother. He seeks out Sophia and lets her know what her words did to him and if she can help him in his journey to do the right thing. Sophia sees the honesty in his eyes and goes for it. When her situation changes, she accepts his proposal even though she never wanted to get married before.
From the day they got married, things happen that can all be traced back to Richard's past. But what if it turns out that the threat comes from her?
A well written story with a bit of spice. A great beautiful role for the female lead who is intelligent and says what she thinks and feels. The rake Richard who, under the guidance of Sophia, proves to be a sensitive man who confronts his past and does good to the women he has subjected to his whims. And a nice disclosure for Annabel from the 1st book
Highly recommended for fans of historical novels with a strong female role.

Sophia is attending her third Season, but has no intention of getting married. She has a strategy for putting off potential husbands, which works very well.
Richard, Earl Saunton, is one of those put off by her, until he overhears her talking to her cousin on the terrace of the venue where the current Ball is taking place. He is known as a Rake, having taken his pleasure wherever there was an opportunity. On hearing Sophia, an intelligent, well read lady speak plainly about him, he sets out to change his ways, and to woo her.
Sophia decides that she needs to marry for protection, after overhearing a plot to harm her for her dowry, so is more than amenable when she is approached by the Earl, and a marriage takes place shortly afterwards.
There follows a tale of miscommunication, misunderstandings, and further threats to Sophia’s new household, with thrills and spills along the way.
I found this book riveting, with a well plotted story, and a cast of many very likeable characters, as well as some villains.
This is Book 2 in the Inconvenient Brides series, but I read it as a stand-alone, and enjoyed every minute of it, and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading Regency Romances.

Richard Balfour, the Earl of Saunton, overhears Miss Sophia Hayward's comments lambasting his character. The light bulb comes on and he realizes his behavior is much like his father's. If his mother was still alive, she would be appalled. He needs to change. Intrigued by Sophia, Richard realizes she is the perfect wife to help him change and keep him in line. Sophia needs protection from her brother and his crony. Richard is the only man she can think of to help her. Quickly Richard and Sophia marry. Problems follow and puts their marriage to the test. Just when one crisis ends another begins. Richard tries so hard to be a hero, but forgets Sophia is his partner. Fortunately she trusts him and understands the way he thinks. Keep this series on your TBR. I have the next book on my list.
Heat level 4.

This is the second installment of the Inconvenient Brides series, but can certainly be read as a standalone. Sophia has not had good male role models in her life as her father and brother's bad behavior can attest to that. Therefore she does not trust men and does not wish to marry. Richard is exactly the type of rake she wishes to avoid. He is a terrible rake and has behaved disgracefully in his past, but after meeting Sophia, he is remorseful of his past ways and wishes to be a better man. He has many deeds to amend for before he can even hope for Sophia to take him seriously. They are unexpectedly thrown together and are forced to face challenges and they must also learn to trust each other before they can settle down and find a HEA. I liked the way Richard came to understand how harmful his behavior had been and worked to better himself and make amends. His growth of character was really nice to see. This was a well-written story with a bit of spice and it was very entertaining. I look forward to reading more in this series. "I never had the chance to woo you. With how events transpired, I feel I owe you a courtship which will be even better now that we are wet and do not require a chaperone."
"If she had what stayed any longer, she would have been far more frightened when I ignored her presence to take you to bed."
This was my first historical romance and boy was I in for a treat.
Miss Sophia and Lord Richard were such growing characters. Throught the story we notice big changes in both. From anti-husband Sophia to skirt chasing Richard.
They both learned from eachother and free to love one another.
• Dual POV • Historical Romance • Steam 🌶️🌶️ • Protective MMC • Strong FMC • HEA • No Cliffhanger
Nina Jarrett has done it! The despicable Earl from her first book "The Duke Wins a Bride" has finally met his match. In this story Richard, the Earl of Saunton, has decided that he needs to settle down and find a wife. He meets Sophia, who makes him realize that he also needs to change his womanizing ways. Before the new couple can get settled, they are forced to navigate through some unexpected crises and the trust in their new marriage is tested.
This book is very well written in that it cleanly picks up threads from the previous stories and also manages to leave the reader eager for more. I read this story in a day and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for her next book! I received a free ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest review.
Does a reformed rake make a good husband? Sophia is an opinionated debutante, who does not want to marry. To avoid that fate, she appears to some gentlemen as an insipid, empty-headed miss, while to some others, she appears as the consummate bluestocking. One night at the ball, she confides to a friend the low opinion she has about Lord Richard Balfour, a dissolute rake, without realizing that he hears everything she has to say. Shamed by her scathing opinion, he decides to redeem himself and to court her properly. After an attempt by her reprobate brother to marry her to one of his cronies to get his hands on at least a part of her dowry, she accepts to marry the barely reformed Richard. ADULT Historical Recency Romance 💕and Adventure This is kind of a crazy novel in which a highly educated wallflower💃 weds a well known rake. She doesn't seem to mind his past at all, accepting his illegitimate son and all his past ADULT liaisons with out question or argument. Besides , it's him or an even worse situation. She needs to marry the Rake of an Earl🐺🍆⛲ to escape being basically sold by her wastrel brother👺 to a never do well man👹 and becoming his third wife 👰. The first two died under suspicious circumstances. She doesn't want to be the third!
ARC Provided by Book 📚Sirens 💃 I also got this ebook from Amazon 📚with KU.
The h lack of emotional and ethical fortitude bothered me throughout the book. She was too quick to accept everything about the Earl.
I really enjoyed Richard and Sophia's story. In trying to find protection for herself from her greedy brother Sophia agreed to marry Richard. Soon after their marriage problems started and Richard blamed his past for what was befalling them only to realise that all that was happening was targeting his wife by the hand of her brother. What I loved most in this book is how Richard decided to change and try to recompense those he disadvantaged.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance.

It just took an open heart to slay a dragon. Sophia is in a bit of trouble and she is not sure what to do. Richard is a man wanting to redeem himself and become a man his mother would have been proud of. The web that this piece will take you through is first rate. Oh yes there are some dangerous challenges, but the book also has a touch of humor, some lovely steam, and it is very well written. I loved the journey this one took me on. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
Oh my! Miss Sophia Hayward is such a fascinating, clever bluestocking highly motivated to steer her own life journey—until she learns of a devious plot that changes everything! True love, strong chemistry and steamy interactions keep the action hopping, especially when danger is blended into the mix. Whether or not a rogue like Richard Balfour can really be redeemed is something you’ll have to read the book to find out. This Book 2 in the Inconvenient Brides series is a winner in my book! I thank the author for an advance review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
The writer has achieved quite a feat in making the character of Richard redeemable and likeable. In fact this is not just an ordinary tale of a villain redeemed, bad-guy-gone good through love as it actually takes that narrative further and explores restorative justice. I have yet to see a historical romance tackle this and it creates an amazing story, where for the first time a rake really examines his problematic behavior and looks at how power dynamics and reckless behavior can effect those without the same rights and power in society. The writer also achieves this in a non preachy way. The spirited, non conformist heroine Sophia is partly the reason for the success of this. Her worldview is practical and very modern. Together they make an amazing pair and for a book that tackles some quite dark areas (neglect, childhood trauma) it has some very humorous and fun scenes. The brother Perry provides a wary, dry wit to events as well. Together they make for a great bunch of slightly eccentric people who create a welcoming, warm and loving family environment where they accept each other's flaws. Great read and highly recommend
A lovely story about 2 people Richard and Sophie, neither who wish to get married but have a happy ending. Many twists and turns along the way. Found it hard to put down. Richard had not been the most trustworthy gentleman being labeled a rake and Sophie wanted to lead a simple life using her own dowry money and not marry. By reading this book you join them on their journey.
