What do my high school sweetheart, roommate and work associate have in common?
They all loved me and now they hate me.
My family used to run this town. Until that fateful night when my mother died, and an innocent man went to prison… And it was apparently all my fault.
Not only did the entire town now hate me, but I was left with my mother’s secret crippling debt. And I had to face everything alone.
Well, not completely alone. There was the small matter of my stalker. The mysterious faceless shadow that keeps promising they won’t stop until I am unquestioningly destroyed...
Wattpad-level writing and drama. All of the characters are unlikeable and continually make the stupidest decisions possible. The plot is stringed together with unnecessary fluff and dramatics.
From the very first sentence in this book I was hooked! This book took me on a roller-coaster of emotions. It was suspenseful, emotional, down-right heartbreaking at times 💔 but the way it has been written can only be described as flawless.
This story hits on some massive mental health topics, which I can only imagine would be hard to write, but Steph has done every scenario justice.
Oh and of course, it wouldn't be a Steph Macca book without a damn cliffhanger that has you begging for me 😉😍
A Day of Ruin is a definite 5 star read for me, and an instant favourite 🖤
Please don't ignore the TW in this book. It is a heavy book with a lot of triggering content that needs to be taken seriously!
Steph did a great job of developing each character and making sure the guys had their own individual personality to dept them from each other. My heart breaks for Harlow, but I know Steph has some surprises for us as the series comes together.
If you haven’t read Steph’s previous series I highly recommend you do it. The series are totally different but her writing is everything a rh book lover wants in a book series.
This book had everything I need in a book. A mysterious stalker, murder, a eccentric best friend, and 3 hot men with plenty of spice. I couldn't put it down! I'm already so excited for the next book. 😁😁😁

Steam: 2.5/5 Strong Language: 3.5/5 Triggers: Self Harm, Suicidal Thoughts, Depression, Anxiety, Murder, Loss of Loved One (off page), Bullying, Eating Disorder, Stalking, Violence
This is the first book in The Chronicles of Maxwell series. It does end on a cliffhanger. Book two, A Day of Chaos, is due out in August 2022.
Our story opens with the plight of our downtrodden heroine, Harlow. She is a 26 year old, curvy, accounting rep who has been maligned in the press and throughout her city to the point that she is hated. She has a stalker but no one believes her. She’s lost everything and everyone she cares about and is slowly losing hope. What do you do when it feels like the whole world has turned against you?
There are three men in Harlow’s life. Dex is her roommate. They share a love/hate relationship. They were friends but with all the drama, he wishes she would leave. Bryson is a former work colleague that shares a mutual crush on her. He got promoted while she didn’t. Finn was her high school sweetheart who had to move away to care for his dying father but has returned. They all share guilty feelings toward her. Will any of these men believe her? Will they realize the danger Harlow is in before it’s too late?
This was a very well thought out story of a normal, everyday woman’s isolation, loneliness, and path of utter despair caused at the hands of a malevolent stalker/entity (the mystery remains unsolved). She was labeled as something ‘subversive’ and it spread - through her work, friends, and community. Ms. Macca doesn’t shy away from the harsh reality that these feelings of rejection and total abandonment can do to a person. The mental health issues and their effects are addressed with realism.
The story was original and fast paced. The characters were flawed but engaging. Props to secondary character Lily. Everyone should have a MadDog in their corner. The steam factor was slow/medium burn, as first in a series. The hero that shines through in this book is the plot about our heroine. She has a dark story but you become invested, you want - you NEED, her to find the courage and confidence to fight for a better tomorrow. Anxiously awaiting the next book.
**I was given an ARC Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I don’t sugarcoat reviews.
5 ⭐ I loved it. I’ll revisit it like an old friend. This book is moving right into my favorites category. I would recommend it to everyone, even people that don’t ask. I’ll one click this author’s work in the future. 4 ⭐ A great read. I’ll probably reread again when feeling nostalgic. It was enjoyable, not portable magic. I would recommend it. 3 ⭐ I liked it. It was a nice way to pass the time. I doubt I’ll reread it. I’d recommend it to someone asking for a specific genre. Thanks for the memories. 2 ⭐ I completed the Herculean task of finishing this book. At times, it felt like I was Prometheus and the suffering would never end. It just wasn’t for me but I applaud the author for their effort. 1 ⭐ I couldn’t finish this book or I wish I hadn't finished. How do I put this? It’s not me, it’s you.
A new to me author with a new series. Going in blind!
Not sure what I was expecting....but this was a murder-mystery-whodunnit-love-story-stalker-mental-health-distress all wrapped in!
It didn't take long to read, easy to get swallowed up in the story. What I really loved here....is I have no idea who this stalker is! There are series where it's spoiled by being so obvious, but this - has my head scratching.
Our FMC Harlow, has already had this "event" happen by the time we join her, but it's not yet hit her life in the worst way. We are with her when that happens, and trust me when I say you feel it in your heart.
It's not until much later during flashbacks, and when her roommate, Dex, work colleague, Bryson and old flame Finn ask her to tell them exactly what happened that fateful day that changed everything for her.
What's scary is that none of the scenarios that happen to Harlow are due to her actions. Someone is controlling everything that happens and all she can do is wait and watch in horror as her life fall apart bit by bit.
Harlow has always proclaimed her innocence. Her story has never once waivered. But not one person stood by her. Everyone turned against her. How she kept going after this massive initial kick can only demonstrate her strong character.
But even the strongest get dark thoughts. Painful and understanding reasons that has Harlow wondering why she's fighting so hard to stay when no one wants her.
But, however a little late - better than never, all three men find her just when she needs them most. They suddenly realise things don't add up and start to look into things.
Only, the stalker doesn't like this.....and while Harlow is going thru paperwork with Bryson, there's a knock on the door. The police are here......
What has the stalker done NOW?????
A page turner, heart flipping story with twists and turns. It's written well, and with emotions that will have you reaching for the tissues. But it does however feel like it's missing that something. That edge that pushes it into something spectacular. But I couldn't tell you what it is, so I apologise to the author for that - i know it doesn't help! It's something I'll have to sit on!
The lowest point for Harlow can be difficult to read, so take note of the trigger readings for this reason. I will admit that this was a little difficult for me to read, but this is a personal issue not anything to do with the writing!
The fact I have no clue who the stalker can be is s breath of fresh air! There's normally far too many clues or something that makes it so obvious! While at times that might be nice, a true mystery rarely happens so this is definitely one I need to pick up when it's released!!!!
I received a copy of the ebook in return for an honest review

1.5 - Harlow is treated absolutely vilely by the men. They have zero qualities I find attractive in an H. In my opinion they do not deserve her. There was too much unnecessary angst. I don't dislike angst or misery as long as it's necessary to push the plot forward. Personally this book felt gratuitous. As a woman I always wonder how the fmc could or would forgive & forget. These men would have to do a hell of a lot of groveling and put in much more work than what I read in order for me want to even be around them. My opinion is obviously the slim majority so give it a go but DO heed the trigger warnings.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
Triggers include: self harm, anxiety, depression, suicide, eating disorders, panic attacks, bullying, assault and more.
Please read all trigger warnings before reading as this book is capable of hitting you hard.
If you’re looking for something by that covers anxiety and depression in all the right ways and gives it a thorough and thoughtful view of it, this book is for you.
Going into this I knew it was going to be dark. I knew there were triggers. I never expected what I got out of this though. My head hurts from being on the verge of tears throughout 80% of the book. 10% was me just surviving. The last 10%, well I straight up cried and I’m not afraid to admit that. You know the writing is that amazing when it can make you feel something.
The story revolves around Harlow, who one night had her mother taken from her and her life changed forever. An innocent man went to prison for her mothers murder and it was apparently Harlows fault. Everyone hates her, even people she use to be close to have pulled away. Her work wants to fire her and is looking for any way to do so. And what makes it worse? She has a stalker and no one believes her.
The rollercoaster ride that is this book will keep you enthralled from beginning to end. There wasn’t a single person in this book that I didn’t want to hit at some point or another. Harlow and Lily being the only exemptions.
I had to constantly stop and take a breather every chapter or two (some more than that) because it was so heavy. I have no triggers but I do have emotions and damn, this hits hard. I had major feels for Harlow throughout the whole book and boy, did she have it bad.
The only bad thing I can say, is 100% a personal preference. I’m not big on women losing control of their bodies. Like, yes, he is hot AF and yes he is willing.. but you’re angry at him and quite possibly hate him and you’re ok with this? In this case though, it is more of something between two characters specifically, the way they interact together and not a normal occurrence so it’s not too bad.
The cliff hanger… I hate it. In a good way. Of course this means I’m sitting here desperately awaiting book 2.
One of the best books I’ve read in a while. I might’ve found a new author I’ll insta buy books from.
First thing to say is the dedication to this book had me 😂 Steph Macca, I thank you for the recognition!
Now the book…
Oh the book. I’m beyond shocked/frustrated/maddened/in disbelief/relieved/excited/jealous/sad…really fucking sad and a million more emotions all at once! I don’t blame Harlow in the slightest for not being able to choose between our 3 sexy H’s. We have the sexy nerd in Bryson, the buff PT business man in Finn and the sensitive yet dominant Dex. All three are tied to our h and as much as at times they wish they weren’t, none of them can deny the chemistry she shares with each. Harlow spends a lot of the story being HATED by every person around her, including the men she has feelings for. But she created a bond with each of these men before the dark drama that has ruined Harlow’s life, and neither Harlow or her 3 men can break that bond.
Harlow goes through so much and definitely take note of the triggers listed because there really are some dark and harrowing scenes to this story. I just want to wrap Harlow in cotton wool, give her a hug and tell her everything will be ok (I mean I don’t know that but Steph Macca PLEASE make it happen 🙏🏻). And then just as it always happens, just when things are looking up for a dear little Harlow.. it all turns to shit again! Which brings me to my final point…..
THAT ENDING!!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOO! WTF!! That was too abrupt, too unexpected, too cliffhangery (that’s a word!), just toooo much for my brain and poor little heart. I need to know that Harlow will be ok, I need to know that these men will be loyal and protect her at all costs. And god dammit I need book 2!!!
PS. If I had to pick a fave man right now… I’d say Dex is just slightly in the lead at the moment 😍 those sexy times were *chefs kiss* 🤌
**I was generously given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review**
Be prepared to have your heart wrenched out and put through the wringer. I did. This book drags you on a roller coaster of emotions and the plot twists spin you off on all directions. I couldnt keep up with them all. I cant tell you how good they were
Harlow (FMC) is completely ostracized and made a outcast to everyone who knows her. So in effect shes more less on her own and that takes a toll on her both emotionally and mentally. Some of which will be hard reading for some folks which is why theres a warning before reading it. Trust me it is needed. She contend with all of that as well as a stalker who is making her life a living hell! The complications are coming in thick and fast when added into the mix are 3 guys too. Her Ex-Boyfriend - Finn, Her flatmate - Dex (who i literally wanted to knock him the hell out for his bloody nasty attitude!!) and her workmate - Bryson. I was completely sucked into Harlow's story and my heart went out to her with what she had to cope with in this book. It was a lot!! Its a brilliant read with one hell of a cliffhanger ending. Dying for book 2 now
› Friends to enemies to lovers › Second chance › Reverse harem › TW › stalker (not the sexy kind, maybe) › mystery/suspense › multi POV
First thing I’m gonna say is that I feel for Harlow so much. There were parts where her personality from before would show through, but she is really lost & alone during this book. & it just made me so sad for her.
There’s so much suspense & I’m dying to know what the truth is. Who her stalker is? And why he wants to destroy her.
Finn, Bryson & Dex. All of them play a part of Harlows life & each have different feelings towards her. & some of them were not kind things (like I could’ve seriously punched one of them). I’m interested to know how their relationship with Harlow will play out.
I also thought I knew what the cliffhanger would be but was shocked when it was something else.
Oh this book kept me captivated and gave me all the feels! Fab starting sentence and the authors note is fab! Steph is a new author to me and I will be back because I’m a good girl 😝
This book is is angsty and witty at the same time. Harlow os struggling to come to terms with how her life has changed due to reasons beyond her control. She is suddenly the most hated person in her town and everything goes to make her miserable. Through it all She is able to reconnect with an old flame, find out there may be something more with a co-worker and her her roommate. Although out of all three I wanted to deck Dex the most. Lily is a fab character- love her general weirdness
There are mental health trigger warning so do proceed with caution. The author has done them justice though and I truly felt Harlows despair and helplessness.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When I tell you I devoured this book in one go, believe me. This book manages to cover so many topics that are still considered too “taboo” that we just don’t talk about in our society. Macca manages to cover each topic with grace, thoughtfulness and gentleness that really speaks about understanding what those thoughts can do to a person. This had me absolutely heart broken for Harlow having to go through all that she has gone through in just a 7 month timeframe. I’m really excited to see where book 2 takes Harlow and her guys. Already sitting on the edge of my seat to see what the hell that cliffhanger was about!
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. This book was everything. I couldn't put it down, it had me hooked from the start. I have never been bothered by triggers in a book but this one hit me so hard. I had a constant ache in my heart where it was breaking through out the story. I was in tears it really did break me. This book was just perfect, so well written and flowed so smoothly. The spice level in it was just perfect. Thankyou so much for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance.
Day of Ruin had me on an emotional rollercoaster!! Our female lead Harlow has been through hell and she’s still very much in the thick of it and trying to find her strength to keep fighting. Her fear, pain and helpless agony is described so well that every single emotion is felt as if it’s your own. Then we have her guys Finn the dreamy personal trainer , Bryson the office crush and Dex the broody chef, honestly They are a work in progress in this book and I hope to see lots of growth and groveling from their characters in the next book! This book touches on a lot of sensitive mental health struggles and that should be considered before picking it up, absolutely read the triggers just in case. Despite the heavy content I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good stalker mystery RH that leaves you suspicious of everyone one and is full of emotional turmoil that leaves you hurting just the way you like. 🖤
I don't even know where to start...I went into this story with no expectations and read the last page completely devastated, in the best book hangover way. Though I found the story building a bit slow in the beginning, the story and the author's way of writing sucks you in, leaving you wanting more. Harlow is an amazing character that calls to that inner scared, lonely, hopeless girl inside of us all. This book gave all the feels and you will need tissue on hand. However, that cliff hanger was not ok for my emotionally fragile self after crying through page after page. I may have shouted "WHAT?!" out loud when I finished the last word. I'm craving book two and can't wait to read how Harlow and her men grow together and help her get back to loving herself. If you like some emotionally dark, suspenseful, slow building stories, I highly recommend this book.
I was gifted an ARC of A Day of Ruin and I have opinions.
I did find the beginning just a little slow for my personal tastes, however once I got further in, I couldn't stop reading it as the overall story has a faster pace. I enjoyed that the characters were not perfect and had clear flaws and issues which makes them more relatable. I do wish Lily made more of an appearance throughout the book and in a specific scene towards the end of the book, I feel she would have made a great addition to that section. However, I love her as a character and cant wait to see more of her.
I really enjoyed the overall set up for the series and cannot wait to see what comes next.
This book was emotionally gut wrenching. The main character goes through so much you can help but feel terrible for her. There are a lot of triggers in this book, but Ms. Macca does a fantastic job writing about such difficult subjects. Harlow is treated awful by everyone in this part of the story, especially by her men. Of course it ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. Making us wait to see where the story goes for Harlow and her men. They have a lot of making up to her to do.
I don’t give a lot of five star reviews. But this one definitely earned it. What a ride! The mystery, suspense, and amazing twists and turns. This book was fantastic and left me wanting more. Don’t just add this to your TBR put it at the top of the pile! This author just jumped onto my very short must reads list. That cliffy…ooof. CANNOT wait for the next book!
I would put this book in the slow to medium burn category. It can be a heavy read at parts of the book, but the storyline is worth it. I absolutely love Harlow and her strength. The cliffhanger will make you want book two immediately.
A good start to a new series. Harlow is at breaking point but I can't wait to see her take her life by the balls and save those around her. I need more
As always Steph hit out of the park with this one . Took me a little to figure out what was actually going on, but I couldn’t put it down. That ending was just cruel
Oh my god!!!! This is so good!!! Poor Harlow I can't wait to find out what is going on and why! Also kinda wanna smack the guys lol. I'm on the edge of my seat I wanna see what happens next!!!
This book reeled me in with the first line. A Day of Ruin is the first book in a series, and will take your emotions on a rollercoaster ride. (Check the TWs)
We meet Harlow, a lonely, unhappy girl with a quick wit who is shunned by the entire town. Shunned may be too soft a word - abhorred/hated is more like it. Dealing with very real threats from a stalker and wading through the hatred, it’s amazing she’s staying afloat.
When an old love suddenly reappears (combined with a roommate who’s been poisoned to hate her and a handsome office crush she thinks she’s in love with), everything may just become too much for this brave girl. Will they help her find her happily ever after? Or push her further into the abyss?
First and foremost, this book really got to me. Harlow is incredibly well written and I feel like she speaks to the lost, confused, maybe sad girl in all of us. I feel for her, and I want some positivity in her life. I also love the author’s quick wit and way with words - she pulls you in so much that you never want to leave.
I highly recommend this book to any of you looking for a dark, emotional, sometimes heart-wrenching story. Book 2 cannot come soon enough.
I feel awful for Harlow and how everyone treats her. I found it slightly odd that a whole city hates her though. A small town would make more sense, but a whole city, where 911 dispatchers ignore you and your company sets you up to be fired seemed slightly over the top.
Bryson had a POV that really just recalled things we saw in Harlow’s POV that didn’t really add any value to the story or progress it. Also he still seems to care somewhat about Harlow, but stands by and just watches. He doesn’t make an effort to be there for her as a friend. Nothing. That’s not cool.
I think the guys needed to work more to get back in Harlow’s good graces. I’m okay with Finn and Bryson for the most part, but Dex is another story.
People really hate her because she supposedly set up Charles Maxwell to take the fall? What on earth is so special about him that everyone would hate her?
I feel like Lily’s character is really random.
I love reverse harem, but the way this one is happening I’m not a huge fan of. I feel like there needs to be some line of communication between all of them. Finn and Harlow confess their live for each other but the next day she’s kissing Bryson?
This book is absolutely stunning! Everything about it draws you in! From the plot, the mystery, the characters, the spice and even the world she builds! I couldn’t put it down, well except to sleep and work, but it was sooo good! 10/10! Cannot wait for book two! Fantastic!
