Rate this book
BOOK 2 IN THE CAPTIVATING SUNKEN CITY TRILOGY

Amare Bellamy never meant to get married. She had a simple plan: rescue the Captain, rendezvous with the crew, and escape the Sunken City. But when her father bumps up the wedding without notice, she has no choice but to comply—that is, until Lukas shows up.

Lukas presents Amare with an ultimatum: break into Skullhaven and collect the ring that could raise the Fallen Witch, or watch her friends die. She agrees, under the contingency that, once their mission is complete, they never speak again. Amare is dead set on sticking to this plan... until she finds out they must pose as a married couple to get inside Skullhaven. Cornered, she agrees to keep up the ruse until they can get the ring and get out.

But what happens when their fake marriage starts to feel not so fake at all?

Review [spoilers ahead!]:
AHHHHHH!!!! Emma did it! She wrote and published a great sequel just 4 months after her debut novel!!! (shameless self-promotion: link to my review of book 1)

What I liked about the book:
1. Similar to book one, this book was very, very well written technically. There were no/close to no errors in grammar or spelling, the details were very imaginative, and the book flowed so well I racked up pages in no time at all.

I also appreciated how throughout the book Emma gracefully layered in reminders from book one that readers may have forgotten all the details to.

2. While book one introduced us to such incredible worldbuilding that was meticulous and so well thought-out, book two was able to pick up with that foundation and expand beautifully. I liked how this book casually tossed in new types of baddies, without drilling to much into them to be overwhelming.

I also loved how this book fully dove into the magic. Between Amare’s structured lessons with Lyra and Kawai, her very unstructured lessons with Maoke, and her enlightening lessons with Lukas, Amare was able to transform from not being able to control or use her magic effectively, to saving everyone in the final scenes with her magic. I loved how everyone had an all-hands-on-deck approach with teaching her to use her magic and ultimately how she gave in and gave us all a show at the end! Also, is anyone surprised that the only person to have the same issues/powers when it came to magic was the Fallen Witch???

Can’t wait to see how else these two are alike!

3. I enjoyed how the author gave the King understandable motives for doing everything he’s done. Do I agree with them? Absolutely not. Do they make sense for an arrogant king who wants to rule the world? Yes, they do.

4. The characters continued to be fantastic!

I liked watching Amare change her attitude towards her darkness and actually embrace it like Lukas and Moake had told her to all along. The book does a great job of showing her struggle and how she mentally held herself back from fully embracing her true self and came close to having something akin to panic attacks. It was very relatable as someone with low confidence. I do worry about how much she embraced it though. Is she going to be a good witch or a bad witch???

Lukas, Lukas, Lukas. God how I love him. I loved how cheeky he was and how he put himself and Amare in a fake marriage and then tormented her with it. He truly had it bad for Amare and he admitted it! When he said he loved her? OH MY GAWD! He did it in the total Lukas-y way of yelling it at someone, but he did it nonetheless! And he still calls her love, which is everything for me 😉I also loved seeing his love for his brother, especially in his silly little riddle. He truly loves his brother and I’m looking forward to watching them grow closer in the next book (hopefully!)

I liked how for the first half of the book Finn really stuck to his guns about disassociating himself from Amare. She really did do him dirty, and the fact that passive, loyal Finn was able to basically tell her to ABCDEFU made him such a stronger character in my book and I really liked seeing this from him. In the first book, he was my least favorite character because he was so vanilla and was obviously not the brother I wanted Amare ending up with, but this book turned around his character for me. He’s still no Lukas, but I do like him a lot more now.

Shoa was amazing in this book! I loved learning about her history with Lukas and why she fully supported Amare choosing him over Finn. Shoa was definitely the voice of reason and I’m so glad she was there. I also loved seeing all the crazy-ass shit she was going through with her Oracle powers. That has not been resolved yet, but I just know something big is coming!

Maoke was downplayed a bit in this, but when she was there, she had my full attention! She is so charming and at her core a very, very good person. I loved watching her take little steps with Shoa, and when she called her darling? It was all sooooo good! I usually hate that endearment, but somehow it worked more for me than love at times.

I loved seeing Uncle Omar again, and how he embraced Amare despite her newfound abilities. He is such a good guardian and truly the only “parent” Amare has. I definitely called that he knew more than he was letting on after book one!

4. I was pleasantly surprised that the author touched on characters almost having sex and went into the issue of giving consent. All I'm thinking when reading those scenes between Lukas and Amare:

5. Amare's way of describing weddings as torture and what her ideal wedding would be brought back soooooo many memories from my own wedding! When I got married, I only cared about the dress and wearing converse. Definitely should have eloped!

6. Since I am in a super lovey-dovey, summer vibes mood and I’ve been blasting the Taylor Swift song "I Think He Knows" for the last month, I’m going to share some of my favorite lines from the book.

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re extra adorable when you’re silently plotting my murder?”
– Oh, this boy.

-----

“That isn’t love, Amare.”

“What do you mean?”

“Love…And I’m not talking about puppy love, here. I’m not talking about a crush. I’m talking about real love, the kind you travel across oceans for, that writers pen stories about. Real love comes with no strings attached. No contingencies. You don’t have to check certain boxes. You don’t have to change for them.” He reaches up a hand and lays it on my cheek. His thumb brushes lightly along my jaw. His voice lowers to a husky murmur. “When it’s real, they love you in your entirety. And you should settle for nothing less.”

- Could he BE any more perfect???

-----

“Did you…did you think I was going to…to force myself on you?”

“No. No, of course not. I just thought…I thought that this must be what you’re used to with other girls, and if I said no, then you would-”

“That I would be angry,” he finishes for me. He shakes his head, and I can tell that his is angry. Furious, even. I’m about to open my mouth and apologize, but then Lukas shifts me in his arms, cradling me with one elbow and using his opposite hand to cradle my face. His eyes burn into mine. With deadly quiet, he says, “Amare Bellamy, I will never, ever, ever force you to do that. The fact that you even considered that I would be mad at you for saying no…it makes me sick. And it does make me angry, but not with you.” He pauses to brush his thumb along my hairline. “With every man, both above water and below, that has ever made you think you owe them one godsdamn thing.”

- God bless, Lukas Mason! Also, a man who knows how to use his hands for love just as much for fun is such a turn on!

-----

What could have been better:
1. I usually love love-triangles, but this one annoyed me a bit. It was fine the first couple of times Amare flipped back and forth, but after a point, I thought she had made up her mind, and then she was questioning it again. It grew a little old for me, especially when it was clear from book one that it was going to be Lukas. It was ALWAYS going to be Lukas.

4.5 embrace-your-darkness stars!

Once again we follow Amare and her journey to stop a dangerous prophecy from coming true. From planning a wedding to fighting sea demons. It was a captivating tale of friendship, love, and acceptance of oneself. Emphasis on the love. The story heavily focus on the love triangle between Amare, Finn, and Lukas more than the adventure part of the storyline. I wish there was a better balance between the two. I did get quite annoyed with Amare and her internal conflicts. It got a bit repetitive. Like dang girl, accept your feelings already! Other than that it was a solid read.

If you're a fan of witches, pirates, underwater creatures and romance this is a must read.

***I would like to thank BookSirens and Emma VR Noyes for graciously providing a copy of the novel for me to read & review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Again, this is an amazing adventure! This is a unique universe, with diverse characters, and a captivating plot.

And who doesn't love a love triangle with a good brother, and a bad brother?

I devoured this second book like the first, and I can't wait to read the next one. Emma, you got me, I'm hooked!! :)

“I am power. I am shadow. I am the darkness, and there is nothing I cannot do.”

The Fallen Witch is the perfect sequel! It was such a wild ride and I really can’t wait for more! The world-building created by Emma Noyes was next level…from the amount of adventure to a fake marriage, enemies to lovers, and the forced proximity/one-bed trope so many people adore (myself included).

One of the things that I really loved about this book (without giving anything away) was the character development that happened for Amare and Lukas, both individually and together. Amare really comes to embrace her powers in the book, with the help from her friends in Skullhaven and also from Lukas. And speaking of Lukas, we see their relationship blossom, but it isn’t without its own hurdles. Amare is faced with a difficult choice throughout the book, deciding who she really can’t live without (Finn or Lukas). While I love both of the Mason brothers, this book helped me firmly cement myself on Team Lukas, despite what the cliffhanger at the end of the book means.

In addition to the Mason brothers, I really enjoyed seeing the relationship between Amare and Shoa grow as well. These two really are the definition of what best friends should be and I really hope that there will be a novella for Shoa in the future (!!!). I’m also keen to see how some of the relationships Amare developed in Skullhaven develop in Book Three, especially with the way things turned out.

I highly, highly recommend this book. And if you haven’t read The Sunken City, you are seriously missing out on a gripping, heart-stopping addicting trilogy written by a fantastic author.

Okay WOW. This book is absolutely amazing and I loved it so much. This series is easily one of my favorites I have ever read and everyone needs to read it! This is an amazing sequel.

The romance is top tier. The love triangle gives me Salvatore brother vibes and I am here for it. I am obsessed with Lukas, just like I loved Damon, probably because I am always rooting for the morally grey dark-haired love interest…

And the plot. It blew me away. It was perfectly paced and so intriguing I could not get enough of it. We get to see so much more of the underwater world and I LOVED it. Seriously, the magic system and world building is absolutely stunning.

I really enjoyed seeing Amare come into her own and her growth in this book is so well written. I also really liked the friendship between Amare, Shoa, and Cora.

After that ending, I AM NOT OKAY!!! I needed book three like yesterday lol.

I could gush about this book series all day and I 1000/10 recommend this series and I hope everyone reads it.

EMMA YOUVE DONE IT AGAIN. i absolutely ate this up. the plot was literally just so fun???? like the forced proximity and fake marriage combination is so fun. ALSO lukas is literally so funny. the banter between him & amare was literally so funny and had me giggling at times. lukas was giving off serious damon salvatore from the vampire diaries vibes. the tension was also SO GOOD. also the underwater setting continued to add so much to the story and i think the world and magic system in this truly make it such a unique book. i loved the pacing of this and i think this was such a great sequel!!! cant wait for the next book <3

“𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓. 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒅𝒐”

I have completely fallen in love with this world. Not only are the outside of the books beautiful, Emma does such and amazing job of world building and making you feel like you are in the story.

I LOVE this series. The magic. The angst. The love triangle. The Salvatore..I mean mason…brothers! THE CLIFFHANGER! It was all sooo good.

“𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰’𝒎 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒑𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆, 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆. 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍 𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓.”

Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off, and we are thrown right back into this amazing world. The writing in these books is so well down, I mean the pirate jargon…it felt so real. The chapters are short and fast paced, which kept me up all night having to know what happens next.

Amare is growing and finding herself. She is not the same pirate we met in book 1, and is on the journey to except who she really is. I cannot get enough of her friendships with Cora and Shoa, they are just perfect and really help
make the book amazing.

“𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙣𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙。 𝙉𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨。 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙗𝙤𝙭𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢。 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢。”

I LOVED getting to see inside Skullhaven and getting to meet a whole new band of characters. I would love to see more of them in book 3, as well as more history on Skullhaven. I about cried happiness when we got to see Omar and his crew again, and his reaction to her..PERFECTION.

This book was a great continuation of “The Sunken City”. I loved the storyline, and I couldn’t tell which direction Amare’s heart would choose. This book had so many troupes I love: enemies to lovers, one room/bed situation, etc. The way this book ended… I need to know what happens next! I can’t wait for the third one!

let's go. team. ______ (I won't cuz, spoilers).

Again, author Emma Noyes leaves us begging for the next part of the story. Our sequel to The Sunken City is an adventurous ride!! There are new prophecies to untangle, there are threads of magic we want to understand, there are new characters we root for, there is a forced proximity/one bed trope I know we all freaking adore.

Standouts for me:
- (1) I live for Emma's world building, I can picture the story like a film the entire time!!
- (2) I already loved Shoa in book 1, but she really fulfills the best friend role well here. New characters from Skullhaven I want to see more of too.
- (3) Same sass, more consequences. Magical powers, friends, loyalty, love - Amare's got a lot on her plate, and the intricate plot definitely entertains!! I can't wait to see how this one shakes out.

Also… Shoa needs her own novella in my opinion. I literally could not love her more!

The Fallen Witch
Author: Emma. V. R. Noyes

The second book in the Sunken City trilogy.

Amare her journey continues. Would she succeed to stop a threatening prophecy before it to late?

Trapped in a world where nothing seems as it be things get even more complicated than they already where.

Can you really rely on someone who has a dark side? Love overall can be an unexpected emotion with plot twists.

With an evil king as a father who does everything to gain more power new challenges appear on Amare her path.

Pirates, sea demons and a mesmerizing world building combined with a romance this storyline has it all.

I enjoyed spending time in this world. The sequel was less adventurous then the first book in this series. The love triangle was a bit to overpowering, at some points it distracted me from the actual storyline.

I would like to thank the author and Booksirens for the ARC copy.

I was given an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion. And here it is:

Top half is spoiler free:

This second installment opens with plans for a rushed wedding, a father who maybe isn't what he seems, and a love triangle that is settled, right?

Can Amare figure out her feelings in time to say "I do", or are we about to witness a very embarrassing and painful "I object"? All while trying to save the undersea kingdom from a king who takes what he wants to further his own need for power.

Can Amare save her mother, her pirate friends, the mchawi, her heart, and the whole undersea kingdom in time?

This book answered lots of questions, added more, furfilled my need for pirate adventures, and made me love this band of friends even more. We have an oracle, an actress, the good brother, the bad boy, the badass lady Captain, and Amare, who is everything you could want in a main character.

Trope count: one bed, fake marriage, enemies to lovers, love triangle, fake sleep-eavesdropping, LGBTQ representation, oh and awesome pirates! Is that a trope? It should be.

Extreme Spoilers Ahead:

I felt like cheering when the Winter Rose appeared and stopped the sham of a wedding ceremony! Thank you, Emma, for stopping the wedding AND sparing Finn his feelings. And thank you for giving us back Lukas because, come on, he's so obviously the better brother. This topic is not open to discussion.

When Lukas stops the wedding and takes the group as prisoners I was overjoyed. Enough of the Sunken City, give me some pirate adventures! And when he so kindly rips off the whole Mchawi/kissed your brother bandaid, how helpful. Finn can brood all he wants, but at least we can stop pretending he was the one for Amare.

We've all been to this rodeo before: the asshole, snarky, sarcastic man who cares nothing for the girl... Who is then forced into close proximity by some sceme or another... And I am here for it! Take me to Skullhaven, baby!

Enter stage left: the one bed trope/fake marriage! Yes! Give it all to me! Let this never end! Hard conversations had in the dark room? Yes please. Every night forever!

In Skullhaven, Amare finally gets to work on her power, and, obviously, she has an extraordinary amount of it. And of course Lukas is proud, because that man is looking at his love. And *pile of mush*. And more mush because he's over his Phoebe plans now because, like I said, love.
Until it all goes to hell and she somehow thinks its a good idea to help protect the ring, the thing she should stay far away from! Who saw that coming? Me. Probably you, too. It was necessary for the book, but I'm still mad at you, Amare; that was stupid.

Fast forward to the zombie bride popping out of her coffin and finally pushing Amare over the edge into her actual powers. Love the imagine of Amare dragging the brothers away, because yes you badass!

Finish off with a declaration of love quickly followed by a couple of homewreckers crashing the party. This author knows how to drop a cliffhanger.

I'ma need book three, thanks.

This is the second part of my new favorite fantasy series. I was looking forward to it and I thank the author for the copy. The good news is that by the end of the year I will find out what happens in the last part. The action takes place shortly afterward the events from the first part. Amare and Finn's wedding is approaching, but of course things are not going according to plan. So Amare finds herself once again a prisoner on a pirate ship, and later has to pretend to be married to Lukas in order to get one of the artifacts needed to free the "Fallen witch" in question. I was sure that interesting twists and turns were waiting for me, but the last page definitely left me with my mouth open. There will be drama in the third part.

I'll start with the fact that the author definitely broke my heart. It's not like I didn't expect it, but somehow I had other views on Amare's love life. I guess I will have to accept it! I like the warmth and calm in the relationship between Amare and Finn, but I also liked their passion and dynamic with Lukas. Amare herself seemed to have grown up in this part and began to get to know herself better. Magic is only a small part that she has to make friends with. I am pleased with the fact that she slowly managed to clarify what she wants and managed to accept herself as she really is. Here I will add that I really liked their friendship with Shoah and Cora, which is quite colorful and fun, because all three are very different. Maoke remains my favorite!

The plot was interesting. The action was racing, but it was well-maintained and not overlooked. The author writes with enviable ease. The dialogues were extremely fresh, and I really like her sense of humor. The world she has built is very intriguing. There is so much potential for more than one series. But, the thing I like most are the characters. When I started reading the words of one of them, it was as if I could really hear their voice, see their manner, and feel their feelings. She's really done a great job of building full-blooded characters. I am angry that the books are unlikely to reach Bulgarian readers, because they are really intriguing. Ah, I'm looking forward to December to see what my favorite characters will face and how their story will end.

Amare Bellamy is planning on leaving the Sunken City after finding out that her father, the King, has evil plans. But then he bumps up the wedding between her and Finn. Amare likes Finn, but she's not that keen on getting married. Then Lukas, Finn's brother, shows up at the wedding, demanding Amare's help. Lukas wants to raise the Fallen Witch and only Amare, in her role as the Lost Princess, can help him. If she refuses he will kill her friends...

I totally love the magical underwater world that Emma V R Noyes has created! Not to mention it's full of witches, pirates and demons! The characters are complex, with multiple layers, and nothing is just black or white. Amare has magical abilities but has to hide them, since magic is forbidden and considered evil in the Sunken City. When she's able to practise she doesn't dare to lose control, to let the darkness in. It's affecting her ability and drains her magic. I feel frustrated, but at the same time I completely understand her. Lukas is presented as a liar and a fraud, a true villain. But is he really? I would have loved to have had Lukas' POV too, not only Amare's, but it just means that we are kept in suspense a bit longer.

I like the portrayal of the brothers relationship. At first glance they seem utterly different, but later you realise they have many common traits, they just have different ways of showing them. Circumstances made them at odds with each other, but sibling love is sentient under the surface. That both of them are involved in an eternal triangle with Amare isn't something I'm fond of, but I can overlook it because I love everything else in this book!

* I received a free copy of the book from BookSirens and I'm giving my honest review. *

Miss Emma did it again!!
I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START this was another masterpiece written by Emma

The fallen Witch is the second book in the captivating sunken city trilogy.
And this was the perfect sequel.

I love everything about this book, literally everything.
The way this book is written, the characters, and everything.

From the first page until the last one I enjoyed it so much, and I already miss the characters.

I'm happy to say that this author is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Following the events from the previous book, we find Amare entangled in a fake marriage and a range of mixed emotions. I continue be adore the inner monologue and growth from Amare, and find her determination and tender heart such a beautiful combination in a fierce FMC. The tropes in this series are just fantastic, including some of my favourites—chosen one, prophecy, arranged and fake marriage, found family—and then there’s the tricksy love triangle. Which, much to my surprise, I am loving. Although this is a YA series, there is so much going on in such an atmospheric way that’s just so enjoyable.

The world-building and plot started strong in the first book, which was a perfect introduction. This book focuses more on the characters; their development, relationships, growth, personalities. The romance is more prevalent in this book, and so are the emotions. Everything blended beautifully from the first book and I’m wholly invested in this story and series.

While the romance was ever-present, we also have adventure and mystery and twists which only added to the depth of the story. The ending…was a total shock and ended on such a cliffhanger that I’m immensely happy that I have the third and final book READY to go!

If you love all the tropes mentioned earlier, pirates, underwater worlds, adventure, romance, fantasy, magic and breathtaking writing, this is definitely a series to pick up!

UM HELLO???? THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. ok i’m ngl the first book was meh and i wasn’t the biggest fan but this second book is so good. THE TENSION, THE PLOT, THE CHARACTERS?? stop it. i’m not normally one for love triangles but this one is too good. i love finn and lukas and they are both good people it’s just in different ways. i love love love all the characters in the story. they are all written sooo well and make you feel things you know you are supposed to feel. never was i bored in this story once. i love that it’s fast paced and it doesn’t drag along. and when there is no action happening we get banter or a cute scene with her friends. i really liked this book and i hope the next one is good as well.

I read this book in one day. Yes, you read that correctly. I read this entire book in ONE DAY. It was so good!

The second book picks up where we left off from the first and it's a fast paced, heart pounding, heart wrenching sequel! I loved everything about this story and cannot wait to read the third and final book.

If you haven't read the first book, you need to. This trilogy has pirates, Undersea Cities, action, adventure, quests, romance, friendships and found family, witches, family secrets, and so much more!

This trilogy has become one of my new favorites and is proudly displayed on my shelves. Do yourself a huge favor and pick these up!

Thank you @emmanoyesmaybe for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 ⭐️ - Second books in series are always a bit difficult. I really liked this, but I did feel like there was a lot of yo-yoing. Both in pacing and character development. But the ending packed a punch!

First I am writing this review after reading the ARC of this book. But just so you know that I loved it so much that I purchased a written copy for my library. If you think sunken. It’s is good- then you better get ready for this book. Oh what a ride and just when you think you have reached the top- Emma Noyes goes and drops the bottom right from under you. I am so ready to read the last and final book - now!!! Absolutely wonderful read - she takes you right there and you can feel and see the characters. I loved loved loved this book!!! The end is incredible!!!

Does anyone know if there will be a third book!
I love this whole trilogy 😭. I wish there was a better ending to this book tho it left me hanging 😪 . Just like Netflix cutting your favorite show with a cliffhanger.

This is the part where we fall in love with the bad boy even more! ❤️ Bit of a scene change from just pirating but was a welcome change. I think overall the side characters took this one for me ❤️
