The Fall before Love

Rate this book
Two young medics, Alexa and Joe, both dealing with trauma from their past, are at war with each other right from their initial confrontation, but they’re not as different as they’d like to think.

Alexa is a paediatric nurse living in London, having moved from her beloved hometown Liverpool five years ago. She’s struggling to come to terms with losing the love of her life to another woman.

Joe, the new paediatrician on Alexa’s ward, walks in on his first day of work. He’s confident, arrogant but Alexa believes she sees something behind his hard exterior.

Both Alexa and Joe have baggage, a heavy past and in order for them to come together, they must deal with their demons, shed skins, and confess to each other. But it’s not that simple when Joe has not yet confronted his reality, and being a male victim of partner abuse, this is something he cannot talk about.

When Joe pushes Alexa away and she leaves and doesn’t come running back, why does Joe’s heart feel as though it’s been ripped out of his chest?

Alexa and Joe go on a journey of self-discovery of love, both together and apart.

Alexa is an attractive nurse with a sparkling personality. Everyone likes her, and she is a favorite at the hospital where she works with both patients and staff. Joe is a handsome young doctor, who appears to be an arrogant jerk, lacking a bedside manner. Even though Joe manages to rub Alexa the wrong way from their first meeting, the two share a mutual attraction. When they have what Alexa assumes to be a one night stand, the sex is amazing for both of them; the best they have ever had, and they each find it too much of a temptation to stay away from the other. Joe makes it clear that the sex is all he wants. But then he proceeds to give Alexa mixed signals. She is still hurt from the way her previous relationship ended, though is it years in the past. It becomes clear that Joe is also haunted from past incidents, but will he ever be brave enough to share these things with Alexa?

The story is told in first person, alternating from Alexa's and Joe's POV, with each chapter named for either Alexa or Joe. There were a few places where I found it difficult to know who was speaking. And in the epilogue, neither person was indicated and thoughts of both were given, making it confusing. Other than that, this is a well-written story. The characters were compelling, and the plot engaging enough to keep me turning pages and rooting, eventually, for both MC's.

The Fall before Love: Sometimes we have to fall before our hearts collide by Nina Maylor.
First of all, I'm not crazy about the title - it is too wordy. Yet it sums up the book very well.
Alexa collided with Joe in what appears, at first, to be a doctor/nurse steamy erotic fiction. It is that, but it is so much more.
Alexa was dumped by her partner and five years on she hasn't gotten over him. Joe was cheated on by Molly and this, plus an incident at work, left him determined never to get involved with anyone again at more than a basic, sexual level. He was a' love them and leave' them guy.
But the sexual chemistry between the two lost soul cannot be ignored and they are drawn to one another over and over again. Lust is a big thing between them. Maybe the only thing because they seem to hate each other. Alexa thinks Joe is arrogant and obnoxious, Joe hates her accent but most of all he hates that she is getting under his skin.
Their physical attraction is mind-blowing (to the reader as well as the characters) but is that all?
This novel may seem like a steamy romance but it delves much deeper into abusive relationships and the damage/hurt they cause. Baggage that cannot be set down and destroys potential future relationships.
Oh, and my hubby is a Reds fan through and through so, when I read out the parts of the book that referenced his beloved team, he nodded in approval.
Definitely a five star read.

I picked this up for a quick fun read and found such a great hidden gem of a romance. The character of Alexa is very relatable, likable, and engaging. and Joe you just want to strangle.

The tension between these two is nail-biting. You want to see them get together, and it's a constant pull and tug between these two. The chemistry is there, and Dr. Joe is trying to keep his tender little heart from being broken again, even though his thoughts are constantly on Alexa. He has a tragic ex-backstory and is haunted by his job and his lost relationship.

For her part, Alexa finds him insanely attractive but is annoyed by his hard attitude. The entire first half of this story is the two of them pushing, pulling, and then finally coming together in an epic bedroom scene.

I love the pacing of this book. It's never a dull moment between these two, and the spicy scenes are well-paced. Time seems to slow down, and you are given the chance to really ponder the scene. It's not a quickie by any means.

Highly recommend this book for a steamy summer read. Pick this up on your kindle, and try to read this in public, I dare you!

The Fall Before Love by Nina Maylor is exactly what you expect from a cozy romance novel. There is enough drama, intrigue, a detailed back and forth, and a sense of humour that really pulls you in. The plot is a simple boy-meets-girl sort of setup and I liked that it kept true to itself rather than trying too hard to be unique.

I think many people can identify with Alexa. Scorned and hurt before, she comes across as genuine and caring, and when it comes to love she has a poor track record. I liked how she met Joe and began trying to get him to come out of himself, especially when from Joe’s perspective it seemed like an impossible task. The couple were mismatched enough to really make their relationship work. I don’t want to go too much into revealing the whole story but let’s say that sparks fly at one point - oh my!

The plot is steamy and tense and is paced in a way that really allows you to get to know the characters and get a sense of what they want. The author certainly knows what works when it comes to romance. I have not read much by the author before but hope to pick something up from her again soon.

Does anyone have a moist towelette? Let’s just say that although this book was listed under Erotic Romance I consider that an understatement. The attention to detail when these two characters get together had me blushing at times.
The Fall Before Love begins with a strong opening, immediately drawing the reader in and I eagerly wanted to know how Alexa’s story would end. I became so invested in both Alexa and Joe’s lives to the point that there were a few times I would have liked to try and knock some sense into them because their decision-making frustrated me so.
Maylor does an amazing job at creating a great tone and pacing within the story and plot, making The Fall Before Love a quick read. There were many times when I had to stop myself from reading the next chapter so that I could take care of a few chores.
Although I loved the story that Maylor created and found both the characters and the plot intriguing, I was a bit disappointed when I realized that although there was nothing spared with it came to those spicy sex scenes, the author was not big on description when it came to the rest of the story. I would have loved to have been able to envision some of the settings within the story. Like the breakroom at work, or Joe’s apartment, and even a few of the other people that the characters encountered.
However, even with the lack of description and the few grammar mistakes that I found within the story, I still found The Fall Before Love to be a great read and would recommend it to anyone looking to lose themselves in a spicy whirlwind of emotions and seduction.

This is a hot steamy romance, about a pair who are broken by previous bad relationships and have trouble committing. Alexa and Joe are good characters at heart, but the author displays their flaws alongside their virtues, which makes them more believable and in turn the reader will deem it worth investing their time. The story develops at a good pace and the characters are well drawn, with each chapter being written from the opposite viewpoint. The plotting and pace are expertly crafted, drawing the reader into the relationships and hooking you into a compelling read. It is hard to put this one down, even though you know where it is going, you just can’t help being carried along for the ride. Despite a few typos and little bit of overwriting, the author is clearly an expert in the genre and delivers on the promise and conventions expected. The epilogue was a bit overkill, but apart from that it was a satisfying ending. This is a book that would hugely appeal to fans of Christina Lauren.

Alexa is a sweet, sexy nurse with a troubled past who just wants a tender, loving relationship.  She brings a smile to everyone around her, even patients in the gravest conditions.   It is impossible not to love her.

Joe is a handsome but arrogant doctor with a troubled past. He wants nothing to do with relationships.  He refuses to connect emotionally with Alexa or his patients.  It is difficult to like him.

They seem like a bad match, but there’s a burning hot passion between them.  Close working coworkers, they know it is a bad idea, but lust for each other consumes them and keeps them coming back. Erotic is an understatement.

“The Fall Before Love” is a great read, hard to put down.  At times, it will make you want to scream in frustration, but it will also make you smile.  I look forward to Nina Maylor’s next book.

Annoyingly addictive! Which I think is also a good way of describing the relationship between Alexa and Joe. Now the Author explains that she's read a lot of romance novels and it shows!

The chemistry between the two main characters is instant! However, both try their best to deny it, leading to that tension we all know and love when it comes to having a new crush you can't stop thinking about. It takes a little time for these two to come together, with you as a reader desperate to just push them together and scream 'KISS!' But when they eventually do it's completely worth it.

Oddly when I picked up this book I didn't even consider sex! But I have to say the scenes between them in the bedroom, and a few other places, are very well written, nicely paced, and enjoyable without cringing, which is something I often find myself doing with some 'steamy' novels. I also liked the fact that the book didn't just focus on their romance, and I found Alexa's scenes with Bill really touching.

So if you want to lose yourself in the excitement of falling in love all over again, I'd suggest giving this book a read!

Immediately yes. I had to bring my phone into the shower with me so I could continue to read…🫢
It was fantastic! Steamy (🫡🌶) and everything I could want in a book. A brooding new doctor?? Yup. A nurse, loved by everyone, except for Dr. Jerk face?? Check. There’s tension. It’s frustrating….just frustrating enough to keep you sucked in 😏😏 5/5. Read it, then read it again.

Wow, I read this book on holiday. If you're looking for a feel good, cheesey romance that will make your heart melt but raise your temperature, then this is the book for you. I loved the push and pull between the characters.

Alexa is too nice for her own good and let's Joe get away with too much IMO. Joe is troubled and can be somewhat mean to Alexa, but deep down he is a good guy. You can't help but love him. I loved them both together.

Loved this book, I had never heard of the author before but I can't wait to see what comes next.

In The Fall Before Love, Nina Maylor masterfully weaves a narrative that explores both the torment of heartbreak and the hope of discovering new love with an unforeseen ally. The story revolves around Alexa Delaney, a committed pediatric nurse, and the newly arrived pediatrician in her unit, Dr. Joe Camden. The two characters are instantly drawn to each other, albeit their connection remains purely physical initially. Despite their conflicts in the professional domain, they find tranquility in their private encounters, fostering a bond that is far from simply being work colleagues.

Both characters grapple with hidden secrets that they're hesitant to divulge. Their arrangement initially thought to be a casual fling, becomes complicated as they grow emotionally entangled. The question is - will they have the courage to embrace vulnerability and consider the potential for a deeper connection? Maylor keeps readers on tenterhooks with this suspenseful premise.

The Fall Before Love is an intoxicating blend of romance and erotica, with scenes that elicit a range of emotions from profound sorrow to intense passion. The characters, Alexa and Joe, are skillfully portrayed with intriguing backstories that lend depth to the narrative. Please be aware certain elements may necessitate a trigger warning, such as discussions of stillbirth, domestic violence, and emotional abuse.

Alexa's character is particularly noteworthy for her transformation throughout the story. Initially held back by the shackles of her past, she eventually blossoms into a stronger, more assertive persona. Dr. Camden's growth, though more gradual, is no less significant by the story's end. His portrayal is a striking reflection of many men grappling with communication and vulnerability due to past trauma.

Maylor's craftsmanship shines through every page of this novel. Her exploration of the 'enemies-to-lovers' trope is an exciting and satisfying addition to the genre. The Fall Before Love is sure to enthrall readers with its emotion-packed narrative, stirring characters, and the author's adept handling of complex themes. Dive into this captivating read for an emotional roller-coaster that will leave you yearning for more.

This story features two people who initially hate each other but who can’t keep out of each other’s pants. After a long series of missteps their physical relationship eventually leads to an emotional one, but it’s a difficult journey to get there.

Look, this book is not great literature. High School English students will not be writing essays about the use of metaphor in this story or discussing whether it is really a commentary on social change in 21st century Britain. What it is is an honest, fun, salty, smutty story about two mostly sympathetic characters who are both deeply emotionally screwed up and who wait far too long before being honest with each other about their feelings.

The sex scenes are explicit. If that’s not your thing, this isn’t your book. Not all female writers can create erotic scenes that are believable and enjoyable for a male reader, but as a man I must say the author did a great job here. Even the chapters written from a first-person male perspective feel authentic.

In terms of writing style the book has a deliberately colloquial tone which reflects the way the characters really would speak and think. I enjoyed this and it made everything feel more believable. There are some minor punctuation errors and a few questionable word choices, and that is the only reason I am leaving a four star rating instead of a five.

Overall this is well worth the purchase price. You will care about the characters, enjoy the sex, and be satisfied by how the story ends.

The Fall Before Love is a steamy enemy-to-lover romance. Alexa and Joe, two individuals shattered emotionally by previous relationships, are each attempting to come to terms with their past loves.

Maylor does a great job of defining their past disastrous first-love partners. She describes their passion and trust in that ‘first-love relationship, the security it created believing each day is more wonderful than the last. Maylor reveals to readers how their profound certainty in their partner makes it all the more devastating when it all comes tumbling to an end. Only sharp, broken shards of emotions are left. Universally, it will evoke an eerie, poignant recollection for readers who have had similar wrenching break-ups and, therefore, more powerful, and thought-provoking.

Thrown together through their work schedules, they are both taken with the physical beauty of the other, but distrust rules them. Dedicating their energies to their patients, they ignore each other, continuing to lead cautious lives even when attempting to find new love interests.

Spicy sex becomes the means to satisfy each other’s longing for something real. It is a good summer read by a new indie author we need to follow for more colorful and provocative stories.

"The Fall before Love" by Maylor is a heartwarming yet super steamy tale of the budding love between a fresh-faced doctor, Joe, and a beloved nurse, Alexa. Set in the bustling and often chaotic world of a hospital, their journey towards love is a story of perseverance, passion, personality clashes, bad (and right) choices and the power of human connection.
Maylor's prose not only brings to life the intricate details of hospital routines, but also captures the depth and complexity of human emotions and faults. As Joe and Alexa navigate the unpredictable and emotionally charged landscape of a hospital, their love story blossoms, overcoming personal internal struggles and some good old head-budding.
The characters are beautifully crafted, with Joe's annoyingly yet perfect exterior and Alexa's infectious enthusiasm complementing each other perfectly, well at least in the end lol. The chemistry between the two is palpable, and their interactions are nothing short of enchanting.
Overall the novel is a heartwarming, engaging, hot, and truly captivating read. Maylor's skillful storytelling and intricate attention to detail make this book a true page-turner, one that will leave readers feeling warm (steamy hot) and inspired.

The Fall before the Love by Nina Maylor is a wonderfully duel-POV between Alexa and Joe. Alexa, a well-loved nurse, and Joe an a-hole doctor—in the best of ways—meet and instantly clash in the fun sexy way. Eventually, the banter turns into a banging one night stand.
Like so many relationships and books before The Fall before the Love, the FMC and MMC both bring baggage to the growing relationship that they had intended to be nothing more than once and done.
The Fall before the Love is a wonderfully well written romance with just the right amount of steam along with deeper and more compelling issues like past abuse and the ghosts that haunt us. Though I haven’t read anything else by this author, I look forward to doing so.
Despite a few grammar issues I still give Five Stars all the way for The Fall before the Love by Nina Maylor.

I often find it difficult to get into a book and usually disengage after the first few pages.

However, there was no risk of this happening with this book - the text flows and if you have to put it down you won't stop wondering about what's coming next.

Like many of us, I enjoy a romantic novels and here Nina Maylor has given an honest depiction of the female/male perspective when smitten with love and lust. A steamy read with heartache humour, anticipation, love, longing and frustration.

Looking forward to another.

The fall before love is a book that has you gripped from chapter one.  The imagery created about the main characters means that you are invested immediately in their lives and what the outcomes will be.  As a local girl, the staging of the book in areas which I am very familiar with only heightens my engagement in the subject matter.  A page turner that surprises on every turn.  An exceptional writer who I cannot wait to read her second book.

Trigger Warnings: Miscarriage, Stalking

OK, the FMC has major issues. Like severe stalking, major issues. I don't believe the whole "sparkling" favorite personality of the hospital. People who are depressed while stalking an ex from five years ago...etc. don't behave like her. It feels like the author threw that in because she couldn't give her main character a real personality. I suggest she read a few psychology writing books to get a better grasp.

Also, the telling. So much telling. She was sad. She was this. She felt like this. SHOW IT. Also, stop throwing in flashbacks. They detract from the story. It should be gleamed from the present in conversations/actions.

Then she falls for the new doctor for his muscles and looks.

All I see are red flags. Red, red flags for two mental people whose character arc is not believable. While I pitied the FMC at the beginning, there was a huge red flag that made me dislike her. It's when she was like, why isn't Callum comforting me while he's silent for like a couple minutes!? Talk about a whiny, pathetic character. No wonder he broke up with her. She flops onto the couch and immediately demands a foot rub. Just pushy, selfish and pathetic.

The doc and her are better off alone to sort out their mental problems.

The FMC displays narcissistic/or sociopathic signs. "I'm a better person than you" No. You're really not.

I disliked the FMC, the side characters, everything. All of these people are awful.

But what I really hate the most is the way the author writes mental health issues as a gimmick. "I don't care about your demons, they can't be as ugly as mine." Like...was this a competition between them? Only mental people are worthy or something?
