In Bristol, three very different women wait for their loved ones to return home. But Edna's fiancé returns badly crippled. And Charlotte's husband comes back a very different creature to the kind, gentle man she remembers. And as for Polly, her GI boyfriend doesn't come back at all, leaving her with a bun in the oven and a scandal in the making...
This book felt very rushed to me. Just another one churned out relying on the author’s good name. Charlotte’s story alone was one with promise, however cramming the other two stories in with it watered the whole book down.. I’d have loved more detail as the subject of each of the incidents could actually have happened back in those bad old days of bigotry?! After starting each chapter I had to check back to make sure who was now telling the story. It could have been excellent given a lot more time & attention.
This novel is set shortly after the end of the war as soldiers are returning home. Three women connect at the train station as they arrive to look for their men. Each one has different expectations and different experiences that they have lived through while separated from those they love. One had an affair and gave birth while her fiance was at war. One became quite independent and learned she had skills for helping others. A third hoped her man would come so she could escape England and better herself overseas. How their lives intertwined through this chance meeting is the basis for this story. Difficult topics are covered including the mental damage caused by wartime experiences, and the bigotry faced by soldiers of colour, particularly in the American army, and the difficulties adapting to a life of disability related to wartime injuries. It is a novel where forgiveness is key to moving on.
This book was such an amazing read, I picked up another book by this author recently and loved her writing so decided to give her first novel a chance and I’m so glad I did. This book follows 3 ladies and their struggles after the war, new relationships blossom and end whilst others are trying to be mended and I was just so invested. The book was fast paced from start to finish and I just didn’t want to put it down. I loved each character and their stories and was so content when I had finished it as it wrapped the book up perfectly. I’m so glad I picked this up and I didn’t want to give too much away from the storyline so I’ve left it quite vague but will definitely be picking up another book from this author.
This book actually starts after the war has ended and deals with the soldiers coming home. Both the women who had kept things going at home and the soldiers who had seen such atrocities had to adjust to a different world. It wasn’t just a matter of going back to the way it used to be before the war because things had changed too much. This book delves deeply into the adjustments required of everyone to accept that things were different and to adjust their thinking to the present and learn how to live with the changes. Highly recommended.
This book tells the reality of what happens during war. The author writes of home comings both happy and sad and those that never occurred. Babies given up for adoption. It tells about many of the prejudice s that occurred.
Set in Bristol after the war – the story centres around Edna, Charlotte and Polly. Men returning home from the war, unfortunately they are not the same men after everything they have seen during their fighting. A well done fast past story which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I am left speechless, and I must admit that in the beginning I greatly underestimated this marvelous book. Glad I persevered, and was then captured right through to the last word.
Very good. Iv had this book for many years and am in the process of sorted books for charity and came across this and read it in a day. BOOK ONE IN A SERIES. yet to tread the others in series.
The story was different as it dealt with the homecoming as the war ended as well as soldiers and prisoners returning to their own countries. I enjoyed the book but did find I was getting confused at times, with who was who. The story flitted from one character to another very quickly.
Another fabulous book by Lizzie Lane - fascinating characters created with real emotion after the war years. I became very wrapped up in their lives, so sad what they all went through, but a lovely ending to the book.
Another good story from Lizzie Lane. It must have been so hard for both men and women when the war ended and they tried to get their lives back to normal. I will get number two in this series.
