King Worm Jack

Rate this book
If only Jack’s teacher, Mr. Prickles, was nice to him. If only his older brother wasn’t so good at everything. If only he could get inside his teacher’s brain and find out what was making him so mean and miserable…

Meet Jack, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary cat, Max. And a best friend called Sally who’s really clever. And another best friend called Rodney, who’s a worm. Together, they set out to cure Jack’s teacher of grumpiness.

You might not think a boy could be a worm. You might not think that worms could explore inside teachers’ brains. Nor did Jack, but that was until he discovered Max’s magical powers. Soon he finds himself running from bogeymen, freeing caterpillar eyebrows, discussing sad memories with Molly the memory matron, arguing with Jeff, the voice at the back of Mr. Prickles’ head, and more.

During their mission, he and Chief Worm Rodney invent the chocolate flavoured sprout and discover how to do the perfect somersault. Find out if they’ve done enough to cure Mr. Prickles of grumpiness. And, add your own drawings along the way.

I live in beautiful Cumbria with my husband, 2 teenage daughters, cat, dog and rabbit. The cat and dog have both featured in my children's books, so maybe it's the rabbit's turn next!

My writing has been long listed in 2 major international competitions: The Times/Chicken House children's fiction competition and the Mslexia Novel competition.

I am fascinated by what drives human behaviour and how one action can unleash an avalanche of unintended consequences and I explore this in each novel, in an age-appropriate way of course!

I write for both children and adults and I am publishing 3 books in 2022:
King Worm Jack for age 7+
Mr. Nobody (2nd edition) for 9+
Scratch: a suspense thriller for adults

I'm currently working on something different: a story of love and loneliness starting in WW2 and covering 2 generations. It's inspired by a box of love letters from WW2 which I inherited

💻📖🎧 Book format & quality 💻📖🎧
A paperback book, with a glossy cover and thick pages. I particularly like that the book allows the reader to draw pictures at various stages through the book.

🌻SpLD comments (from a dyslexic)🌻
The choice of font for the text for this book is excellent for my dyslexia. I normally struggle with bright white pages but the font choice makes this book really easy to read.

🎨 Artwork🎨
An excellent choice of pallet in keeping with the theme of the book. The sketches in the book are a lot of fun.

A great little book for the younger reader, I used this for night time reading with my 6 year old. It is perfectly placed for this a wonderful story about Jack who, during the day, is simply Jack; but, at night he becomes King Worm Jack, a worm, who would go on his adventures with Rodney one of his worm subjects,

The chapters are the perfect length for night time reading whether you are short of time, so read only one chapter, or able to read a bit longer.

My daughter loved it too, the story kept her enraptured and engaged throughout. The only element we couldn’t work out was the (apparently) half blank pages dotted through the book to add your own doodles. I get the intent and some parents and kids might like it but it wasn’t for me, drawing in books brings me out in a sweat. Apart from this very minor point it was a great book.

I can just imagine a nine-year old reading this book and feeling very tuned in to such a creative story. I love the characters, especially Sally and Jack. In this book, children will relate to Jack because he feels anxious about school, his friends, and whether or not his parents are proud of him. He knows that his older brother gets much praise, but he thinks he is worthless.

Jack has a dream about worms, and he becomes the King of worms. He saves a captured bird and gives the other worms adivce. When he wakes up, he realizes that it was only a dream. Jack has trouble in school and can’t stand his teacher, Mr. Prickles. Sally and Jack want to help him win the tastiest plant award, so they talk to all the worms. Now, how on earth can the worms help a plant?

The book is filled with middle-school silliness, but also addresses how children feel. This can help them to know that other children feel alone, too. In the end, Jack gets what he always wanted.

This was a delightful little book about two brothers - Seb and Jack - Jack feels that Seb is the favourite child, he appears to be good at everything and he is not very nice to Jack!

To get away from his not so great reality, Jack lets his imagination run free and takes himself off to his safe place - his imaginary worm world, and what a wonderful, beautiful and fantastical world it is!

The book explores themes such as friendship, loyalty and kindness and even has sections where you yourself can let your imagination run wild and draw your own illustrations for the story! This is great for kids and may help to improve their observation skills!

A funny whimsical tale for children with just the right amount of gross moments 😂 (snot guns)
But it does have a message too of being proud to be you which is put across very nicely.
Jack and Sallys friendship is sweet, Max the Cat is a brilliant character too. The illustrations of him are just as I'd pictured in my head.
An added fun bonus to this book which I haven't seen in many others is that you get to add your own drawings at certain big points in the story.
Definitely one for the creative little people.
Natalie thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review King Worm Jack.

This is a wonderful immersive book which encourages you to draw your own illustrations within the book. Jack and Seb are brothers and that, is where their similarities end.
Seb has it easy and good at everything, including getting Jack into trouble. The story touches on self belief, family dynamics, bullying and sibling rivalry without getting too heavy. There is fun to be had and chances for revenge and help others all be it through unusual methods. Oh and there is also an unusual cat who enjoys winking.
I think children 9yrs plus would enjoy this one.

A really nice story about a young boy Jack who learns some valuable lessons about friends, family and good deeds.
It's set amongst a really funny theory about Jack's cat and his nightly escapades into the world of worms.
There's some really illustrations dotted throughout which bring parts of the story to life really well too.
I think children aged 6-10 will love this and if anyone has any creative skills like Jack - there are some empty spaces throughout to do your own illustration!
