Leandro finds Cale's company a good antidote to the boredom and seclusion of their small village. He not only admires Cale, he desires the man, and hopes to win his love. Cale has secrets, however, secrets that he dares not share with Leandro, for fear of being banished from the village forever.
When Leandro discovers Cale's secret, Cale knows he has to leave. Leandro wants to come with him, but Cale worries that he'll put Leandro in danger, and he's come to care too deeply for his friend to do that. Can he find a way to keep Leandro safe, and keep the wolf from the door?
Leandro is an outsider in his village, preferring to spend time alone in the woods surrounded by nature. He constantly has his eyes on the stars, “dreaming of what lay beyond the boundaries of their small village.” So when he returns to town one night claiming to have seen a wolf, no one believes him. His only friend is Cale, the village apothecary, who has “listened to [Leandro’s] dreams and encouraged them” since moving to the town two years previous. Their friendship is a beacon of light for Leandro who was left all alone in the world after the death of his mother.
After a fight with his boss’ son, Leandro knows that he needs to leave the small village. His only hesitation is that it would mean leaving Cale behind as well. Leandro has an open heart and has fallen for his friend, no matter how much he tries to deny his feelings. After Leandro learns Cale’s secret, Cale is determined to leave the village alone for Leandro’s own protection. Leandro must convince him that they belong together before it is too late, and he loses the man forever.
Cry Wolf is a sweetly romantic and touching story. It is quite short, at only 18 pages, but Ryan has packed it full of action and emotion. Leandro is a wonderful character, filled with hopes and dreams, and his open nature is both refreshing and enjoyable. I felt strongly for him, a young man who has dealt with the horrid treatment of the villagers his whole life but hasn’t let it damage his spirit. Although the story does include a werewolf, the central focus is on the relationship between Leandro and Cale and what the future holds for the two men. My favorite quote from the story is just one example of the intensity of the story.
“’You touch something inside me that I never knew existed before, but that is all the more reason for you to stay away from me.’
Elation coursed through Leandro’s blood at the admission. ‘I can’t do that, Cale. You see, you are inside me too; in my heart and my soul, and even if I could, I would not have it any other way.’”
If you have never read any of Ryan’s other works I highly recommend picking up this story. It is a wonderful introduction to a great writer and you will surely enjoy Ryan’s stories. For those already familiar with Ryan, this is another fantastic selection from an excellent writer!
In medieval village, probably in England, Leandro is a young guy too clever for his own good. Orphaned after the death of his mother, a cultured woman who wanted for him a different life, he never knew his father, and to top all, he is too pretty to be considered a "real" man. In that village he will always be the boy with the head in the clouds.
The only bright light in his situation, is the friendship with Cale, the apothecary of the village, a man arrived two years before and since then his only friend. But also this friendship is creating trouble in Leandro's heart, since he has feeling for his friend that he shouldn't have.
One night while he is alone in the woods around the village, Leandro makes the most extraordinary of the encounters, a being half human, half beast, a werewolf. Obviously when he, scared, bursts into the village, villagers only think that this is one anther oddity of that lunatic boy. Leandro knows that it's time for him to leave the village, even if leaving means not having more the chance to be with Cale.
The story is really short, less than 20 pages, but it's light and sweet. Usually an historical romance has always a "weight" upon it, a feeling that, to be good, it needs to be big and important. This is not the feeling I had reading this short story; it mixes well the paranormal elements with the historical setting, it gives enough details to build the atmosphere, but they don't seem forced, like sometime happens when authors try to ennoble their romance with useless information.
The only lack I found is that it's too short, and so both Leandro than Cale are only hinted, we haven't a real development of them. It's a lack but it's also a compliment I have to do to the author, since I think that both characters are worthying of more, above all Cale.
