I experienced falling in love with poetry again. The selection is wonderful! The rhymes and meters, the words and tones. It truly felt like coming home. Positively delightful. I haven’t read any poems that weren’t only about love or sorrow or some internal struggle. But in this, I read about those things and ships and maidens and wonderful scenery. The poems are simple and clear.
As with most poetry anthologies, some of the selected poems are better than others. Overall, it was a decent selection; however, I don't necessarily agree with the target audience on some of the poems. As a book marketed mainly for children, I think some of the poems are too complex for a child to understand without a teacher or adult breaking them down and explaining them.
Collections of poems that claim to be definitive, poems everyone should know, always fall short of that goal because there is so much poetry and so much relies on the taste of the individual, but I will say that I enjoyed most of the poetry in this book and it was a quick and easy way to get back into reading poetry when I haven't been reading any in awhile. I especially liked how it was divided into themed sections that built from simple, light reflections to more complex thoughts.
A lot of these were pretty obscure and specific (like to England), but I marked up the ebook enough that I intend to buy it. There are some gems in here.
This book brought back many happy memories of my childhood. My grandfather and mother often quoted from some of the poems and I still recognize them today. Others were completely new and introduced me to ports of like to read more in the future. I love poetry and to be able to have a collection I can revisit is a good asset. Hopefully, our children and grandchildren can learn these as well. Rekindling a love of poetry and reading is important to a world that moves on hyperdrive.
