Un steak est la plus réussie des quatre nouvelles de Jack London évoquant le « noble art » : le texte dépouillé au ton clinique et à la précision millimétrique donne au lecteur le sentiment de pénétrer au coeur même de l’agir pugilistique. Cet effet de réel doit beaucoup à la longue expérience de praticien et d’observateur de la boxe de l’auteur de Martin Eden.

A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.
London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.
His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

Courte nouvelle de Jack London consacrée à la boxe. Tom King, boxeur professionnel depuis une vingtaine d’années, doit affronter le jeune boxeur Sandel. Mais Lizzie, la femme de Tom, n’a pas pu se procurer de viande pour le dîner d’avant le match. Tom va boxer en pensant à ce steak et aussi à la jeune génération qui détruit l’ancienne, comme lui l’avait fait des années plus tôt. La description du combat est très précise et pas du tout ennuyeuse, bien au contraire.

Autant sur la boxe que sur l’âge. A la fois très humain, mais très dépouillé et précis, c’est un excellent texte de London. Je l’avais découvert au format audio ; il est également très prenant au format écrit !
