Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Visier

Rate this book
Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier is a musical with music by A. J. Holmes, lyrics by Kaley McMahon, book by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, and Eric Kahn Gale, and directed by Brian Holden.

The musical parodies the 1992 Walt Disney Animation Studios' film Aladdin, and The Walt Disney Company in general, telling the story from the point of view of Ja'far, the Royal Vizier. It has several nods and homages to the musical Wicked, which similarly retells a popular story from the villain's point of view.

Twisted opened in Chicago's Greenhouse Theatre on July 4 and closed on July 28 as part of a limited run. The group put the entire musical up on YouTube on November 27, 2013. It was produced by StarKid Productions and directed by Brian Holden. The musical's cast recording debuted at No. 63 on the American iTunes Top 100 albums chart.

My first thought seeing this here was, I thought I was on Goodreads? That's not a book! But I guess if we can read Shakespeare, we can read StarKid, right?

It is a marvelous work of humorous fiction. My favorite StarKid show. The songs are what really make it. AJ Holmes imitates Alan Menken brilliantly. All the jokes around Achmed and Pixar are especially good. Adding Scherezade is an elegant twist that brings up the story's origins. And, as always, StarKid manages to put real heart and hope into the show even though it's mainly a parody. Go watch it now if you haven't!

(I wonder if you can get a copy of the play even if you're not going to perform it? I'll have to find out. I think they are pretty tight with this one because of who it's parodying. But I know you can get the sheet music.)

This is to Aladdin what Wicked is to the wizard of oz. This musical is one of my favourites from the StarKid team, and I equally enjoyed the play reading experience. I highly recommend watching the musical before reading as you know what the tune of the songs are.

I really enjoy this new take on the characters, and of the history of Disney and Pixar. I loved the overall messages about working hard to make your dreams come true, and how there are two sides to every story.

As always, the songs are great, I love the characters, and I was laughing out loud the whole time.
