A quiet companion…an arrogant Earl…will she save him from a trap?
Being a handsome, high-titled gentleman in London made Jonathan’s first summer in London as the Earl of Havisham a great success. Returning to the city again for yet another summer, he hopes that he will find the same attentions and pleasures as before. Unfortunately, his mother decides she also wants to join him and insists upon bringing her quiet and rather dull companion – a companion that Jonathan has never met.
Miss Deborah Fullerton has been a companion to Lady Havisham for the last three years and knows all too well the lady’s intention to marry her off to her son. However, upon meeting the gentleman, Deborah finds him rude, arrogant, and entirely selfish and declares to Lady Havisham that she could never imagine him as her husband. Unaware that she has been overheard, Deborah continues to behave just as a companion ought, oblivious to the fact that her words have stuck in the mind of Lord Havisham himself.
When a trap is set for Jonathan, will Deborah be able to save him from it, without pushing herself too much into the fore of society? And what will Jonathan do when he realizes that the quiet, shy companion means more to him than any other lady could ever be?
Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother.
She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her.
She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.
On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!
The Companion and the Earl (Ladies on their Own #3) was given to me thru Book Funnel as a ARC viewer. The review is my on view. I enjoyed this story as it had many twists and turns but never lost the thread of the story. It was a good clean read, a breath of fresh air, it was light and a very fast and easy read. There wasn't any lags in the story lines. I highly recommend this story to anyone that wants to read a fast, paced, clean read with nobility in the story line. I know you will enjoy it as much as I have.
For some reason I have not been able to get into any of the books in this series. As a whole it is missing the authors usual 'magic'. This is by far the best of the three, but still a little flat compared to other books by this author.
The author needs to research the regency time period more. Several things were off with regard to the upper crust and customs of the period. It had some better moments, but honestly had a hard time finishing it.
My favorite of the series was book 2 which was 5 stars from me. This one the H wasn't likable throughout the story. There is no connection between the H/h and no romance. I did like the h and the H's mother made the story somewhat enjoyable.
As my title states, the H is selfish because he hasn't visited his kind and loving mother in 3 years. When she comes to London, he runs to Bath and vice versa. How can you like someone so self indulgent? He is rude to the h because he feels she is below him. Yes, he does improve, but too little to late for me.
Then you have a women who puts the term Mean Girls to the test and tries everything to discredit the h.
This is a clean story with only a kiss or two.
The story ended at 91% on my e-reader, rest blurb for another story by this author. The ending wasn't satisfying either because yes the H/h got HEA but not everything is wrapped up about someone in her life.
No cheating, no honest dialogue between the H/h til near the end, HEA I suppose, and clean. Not going into detail because the blurb explains the premise of the story. Just some other tidbits not mentioned. (ljb)
Miss Deborah Fullerton is employed as a companion to Lady Havisham, who has planned to make sure Miss Fullerton makes a match and escapes her vile father. Miss Fullerton’s father is truly a reprehensible man, he treats her like dirt and if I can complain about one thing is this entire novel it is that I would like to have seen him get his comeuppance or at the very least a scene where he is told that he has lost. Lord Jonathan Havisham does everything he can to avoid spending time with his mother, he is without doubt a veritable brat for a portion of this story. I couldn’t believe that we would ever look to root for a relationship with he, and Miss Fullerton. Of course, we have our expected villains, Lady Vivian being the worst. There is also Lord Harrogate, and Lord Thornley who are spoiled, selfish men who cause a bit of drama with the couple. But their bad deed is what brings Lord Havisham to his lightbulb moment. I do have one more complaint, I wouldn’t have minded a look into their future.
4.5 Stars Jonathan Earl of Havisham has been avoiding his mother, as she wishes him to marry. But when he forgets about a letter he finds his mother & her companion on the doorstep. An utterly charming romance. He ‘s so full of himself until brought up short after hearing scathing remarks about his character – all of which he’s sad to say are true. She’s kind, caring & demure until she’s angry & Jonathan makes her angry. Throw in a conniving debutante & a bet between “gentlemen” & you have a well paced delicious romance, which I devoured in an afternoon. It’s the third in the series but easily read on its own. This author just keeps getting better My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
just loved Deborah and Jonathan. Deborah reminded me of a wronged heroine. Her cruel father to do what he had done and for Deborah to born all of the suffering and disappointment was credit to her character. Lady Havisham was an optimist. She always was considerate, kind and had true north sense of right and wrong. A lady all the way. Jonathan was a miracle in the making. For as demure and sweet Deborah was, she was not afraid to put him in his place. She was always afraid she had overstepped but I am glad she did. She had a profound effect on Jonathan and it was for the better. The author did a wonderful job in creating the unlikable character in Lady Vivian. She had a undeniable beauty but inside her soul was black as coal and she was such a vindictive creature. I am glad she got her comeuppance. Loved this book. Wished it was longer, I highly recommend it.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read Happily Ever After Inspirational Page-turner Romantic Realistic Unpredictable Wonderful characters
Jonathan, Earl of Havisham, has been avoiding his mother for the past three years. When she says she is coming to London, he heads to Bath. If she then goes to Bath, he comes back to London. Now he has received a letter from his mother which he has ignored and forgot about until she shows up with her companion Deborah Fullerton. Deborah is the daughter of a Viscount but he has been very cruel to her so Lady Havisham has taken Deborah under her wing as her companion. They have not told her father where she is or the fact that Lady Havisham is seeking to find her a husband. There is a troublemaker amongst the ton who wants Jonathan far from Deborah and is setting a trap so he has to marry her. Read this story and find out what happens in the end.
This is a quiet love story. A woman forced to be a companion by her father and a Dowager Countess who has a heart of gold. The Dowager's son is completely self possessed. After overhearing all of his faults, his thoughts turn towards his behavior and the behavior of his friends. Miss Deborah is kind and gentle, with a little appropriate sass. Although there is an error in the writing here, since Deborah is a daughter of a Viscount, she should have been addressed as Lady Deborah. Even though she is a companion, she is still entitled to her title that she was born into. This is a sweet and slow paced love story, and we see changes to a very self absorbed man, becoming more concerned for those around him.
Another great read from Rose Pearson. I love how her books set in the London Society times. In this story Miss Deborah Fullerton has been a companion to Lady Havisham for the last three years and knows all too well the lady’s intention to marry her off to her son. However, upon meeting the gentleman, Deborah finds him rude, arrogant, and entirely selfish and declares to Lady Havisham that she could never imagine him as her husband. But Deborah is not willing to let Jonathan get set up by someone he truly does not care for. This story will keep you entertained to the end of the book as it did me!
This is a story you won’t want to put down and luckily it is a day’s read so you don’t have to. The heroine has had a hard life with a cruel father, but now she is a companion to a very nice woman who hopes to find her a marriage prospect. The hero is very selfish and arrogant at the beginning but you have early signs that he really isn’t. Slowly these two fall in love, but several forces try to keep them apart. The HEA does happen and I wish there had been an epilogue to know more about it. I received an ARC for an honest review.
The level of writing from Rose Pearson improves with every book I read. I love how she can pull you into the story and you feel like your there. The Companion and the Earl is no exception. The Earl is one you dislike for his attitude at first but watch as a transformation comes about and his thinking changes. The Companion is a quiet, meek sort that at first does not express her feelings openly but learns to speak her mind. I highly recommend any of Rose Pearson's books if you like a clean HEA with a little drama thrown in.
He found just the one he needed. They did not get along right at first the hero was a jerk to the heroine. In the end he did get his act together and ended up with the girl but oh what a journey they took. I really liked the blend of characters in this book. There is not a real villain just some men being thoughtless and not caring about how they may hurt someone plus there is a snake and I love how they were slain. This was a very entertaining book to read and I am so happy I got a chance to read it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I did like the main character of Deborah, even though she had a cruel father, she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, when it was necessary. At first Jonathan, was arrogant and selfish. However, he did redeem himself later on in the book. Unfortunately, the pace of the story was too slow for me, especially the first half and a little predictable. I had enjoyed Rose’s last book so much and this didn’t life up to expectations. I know I seem in the minority in my thoughts, judging by other reviews. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
There is a tension throughout this story- of growing love. Because we live in an instant society we don’t often take the time to sort through our emotions and wisdom of family that this author brings out so beautifully! The sense of honor and protection of men with women that this author brings out is often a lost art but is well depicted. As well as the danger of toying with peoples lives thinking no one could get hurt. Bravo!
" The Companion and the Earl" by Rose Pearson A Sweet Clean Romance I did enjoy my time within this story. Although, I didn't fall in love with this story. I did really, really, like it. It was sweet and clean with lots of twists and turns with nary a dull moment. NOTE: I received and ARC of this story from the author via Bookfunnel. This review expresses my honest opinion.
Miss Deborah Fullerton the daughter of a Viscount and was a companion to Lady Havisham. Lady Havisham was going to make arrangements for Deborah to get married this year in London. She was going to have her married to her son Jonathan, the Earl of Havisham. Ms. Pearson has written a good little book which like all of her books is very readable and I recommend that you read it...
She becomes a companion — and when they go visit Lady Havisham’s son . . . Well he is not happy they are there! And he is downright RUDE. And yet Lady Havisham is convinced they will make a match!! This is an amazing book — totally loved it!!! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own.
The Earl of Havisham has no interest in marrying, but Jonathan’s mother has different ideas. She has recently hired a companion, Miss Deborah Fullerton – with the hopes that her son and her companion will become linked. At a ball, Deborah becomes aware of a trap to ensnare Jonathan. She sets out to save him. Attitudes towards each other change, but can there be a future together for them?
Good clean read Great engaging characters (some more than others). My favorite is Lady Havisham, she says it like it is - hoping. She is so kind to Miss Fullerton, treating her as a human - not as lower class like they did in those times and stations. She also had knowledge of things, such as secrets, but has no issue keeping them to herself, including from her son.
I absolutely adored this book. Deborah goes through so much, but it doesn’t get her down. Jonathan can’t help but realize he needs to change his attitude especially after what happens. This book is full of so much intrigue, attitude, those with ulterior motives. This book will not disappoint, I was hooked from the beginning.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced review copy of this book.
Rose Pearson never disappoints with these books. I loved Lord Havisham and Deborah's story. He didn't think he was ready to settle down and give up his bachelor days and she hopes to not have to settle for marriage without love. Neither expected for things to happen the way they did. A captivating read that I read straight through.
The third book in the Ladies on their Own: Governesses and Companions series. Jonathan the Earl of Havisham and Miss Deborah Fullerton the companion to his Mother Lady Havisham's story. They will have their ups and downs as they work toward their HEA. The story is well written and held my interest throughout.
A matchmaking dowager countess, puts her young lady's companion forth as her son's best choice for a wife👰.
I enjoyed this book immensely. As always, author Pearson 📚 tries to give the reader a total flavor of this time period with dialect and language close to what was spoken by the peerage in those days.
Deborah had withstood much in her own family relationships and was given a much needed respite as Lady Havisham's companion. Deborah is a gentle, humble caring soul. Her Lady is strong, loving and caring. Lord Havisham is selfish, self-centered and arrogant. What is so interesting in the story is seeing the Lord mature and humble himself. Loved the ending.
I can't help loving Rose Pearson's books. Maybe because they remind me of a time when kindness and courtesy were expected and taught from the earliest ages! That may not excite you, but you'll feel really My good after reading anything she writes, and I have read all of them I could get my hands on. Read her often and enjoy your happier days!
A real romance that is an enjoyable book to read! The companion has been dealt a horrible hand by the occurrence of her birth and the Earl has been a self serving man without regards for anyone but himself.
